"Mama! Mama!" Beth yelled, sitting up with a start. Her body heaved with sobs and Olivia awoke quickly, gently gathering her up into a huge hug and rocking the both of them back and forth.
"I'm here... mama's here!" Olivia soothed, taking all of Beth's weight when she slumped against her. Beth sobbed until her voice was hoarse, until there was nothing left to give. Olivia wrapped one arm around Beth's head and used the other to rub her back.
"It hurts... it hurts!" Beth croaked pitifully and Olivia kept her wrapped up in her arms, her own eyes filling with tears. How she wished that she could make it easier for her and take it all away from her. She spoke low and soothingly, gently nuzzling her nose against the teenager's.
"What hurts darling? Where does it hurt?" Olivia whispered, gently holding the young girl at arms length so she could inspect her for any further obvious injuries.
"My heart aches... and down there it hurts a lot! It hurts so much!" Beth let out hiccups and sobs, moving in closer to Olivia and not letting her go. She didn't want to be away from her safe place, not even for a second. Olivia kissed her forehead and rocked her back and forth.
"Sweetheart, we need to take you back to the hospital. We need to get you checked over and..." Olivia started to speak and Beth sobbed more, shaking her head and gripping at her second mom's shirt.
"No please! No more hospitals! Please!" Beth yelped and Olivia was torn; already she was beginning to lose perspective, never ever would she normally agree to not send a rape victim to the hospital. However, she wasn't a police detective! Not on this case anyway, she was a mama looking out for her baby.
"Ok... Ok shhh. No hospitals, but will you allow me to check you over? You could be seriously injured... permanently. I'm not trying to scare you sweet girl but I don't want you to be in pain!" Olivia wiped Beth's tears with her thumb.
"Ok mama... but please no hospitals! Dr Bailey gave me some pills to take whilst I was there as well. He said one was to prevent a pregnancy and one was to stop any STD's... so I'm safe on that front at least!" Beth leaned into Olivia's chest and hiccuped pitifully. Olivia took a deep breath, so relieved that they had one less thing to worry about.
"Now this might feel a little scary and uncomfortable, but everything is going to be alright. What I'm going to do is put some plastic gloves on and have a look down there. Once I see what is causing you the pain then we can use medications and cream to make it better ok? You're alright sweetheart, lay down on the pillow. It's alright!" Olivia soothed, gently helping the young girl to lay down and remove her underwear. Olivia reached into her drawer and put on some plastic throwaway gloves.
"This is so embarrassing..." Beth whimpered, keeping her eyes shut tightly. Olivia squeezed her hand gently, her heart went out to Beth and she was so proud of her.
"Are you ready baby?" Olivia whispered gently, waiting until she had got Beth's approval. Once she had it, she took a deep breath and gently looked in between her legs. Olivia wanted to throw up when she saw the injuries to the poor child, no wonder why she was in so much pain. She was torn very badly and Olivia knew it would take a long time to heal.
"It's alright darling, mama's here. It's ok, you've been so brave!" Olivia cooed, holding Beth tight when she flung herself at her. Beth clung to her neck, gripping hold of Olivia as tight as she could.
"I'm going to get you an antibiotic cream and some stronger painkillers baby. That's going to help a lot, I know it's quite a bit to take in! I was speaking to Chloe last night whilst you were asleep..." Olivia said softly, stroking Beth's hair and kissing her forehead.
"Is she ok?" Beth whispered, feeling very bad for her friend. She had risked so much to help her and she was so grateful to her for not trying to cover it up. Olivia shook her head slightly, biting the corner of her lip and taking a small breath.
"I'm actually quite worried about her to be honest, would you like to invite her round? We could have a girls day with comedy movies, hot chocolate, ice cream? How does that sound?" Olivia said softly, hoping that by getting them together in a relaxed environment that Chloe might talk to her and she'd be able to help her; she was already feeling protective of the girl who'd helped her baby. Beth perked up slightly, that did sound like a lot of fun.
"Yes please, I'll text her now!" Beth said softly, quickly sending a text to Chloe before putting her phone down. She cuddled up in Olivia's arms, and closing her eyes. She felt so safe and secure, like nothing could ever hurt her as long as she was there by her side. Hearing her phone go off, she unlocked it and frowned slightly.
"Was that Chloe?" Olivia asked, gently rubbing Beth's back and sitting herself up against the headboard slightly. Beth nodded her head a little.
"Yeah it was... something doesn't seem right though. She seems very... I don't know. Just unlike herself!" Beth said with a sigh and Olivia comforted her, gently stroking her hair.
"I'll speak to her don't worry!" She whispered softly.
At around midday, there was a knock on the door. Olivia made her way to the front door and opened it, her eyes widening slightly. Chloe was stood there with a huge black eye and looking down at the floor, clearly mortified. Olivia's mama instincts came out straight away and she held her arms out to the poor girl.
"Come here..." Olivia whispered soothingly and Chloe didn't need to be told twice, she fell into Olivia's arms and crumbled like a small child. She shut the door behind them and Olivia walked towards the living room, keeping Chloe gathered up in her arms. She sat Chloe down and sat down next to her, allowing her to rest her head on her chest. Olivia took advantage of Beth being in her bedroom getting dressed, wanting to talk to Chloe on her own.
"You're safe now... when did this happen?" Olivia soothed, handing Chloe a few tissues to dry her tears. She clung to Olivia tightly, shrinking herself down so that she could rest her face on her chest. It started to make Olivia even more protective; it was something that only Beth had done before now.
"Last night... not long after I'd texted you. I went out to grab some Chinese food, I had no food in the house and I was so hungry..." Chloe let out a sob and Olivia hugged her tight, what was wrong with some of the students in that college!
"You don't need to explain yourself, love. You had every right to go out! You've done nothing wrong!" Olivia pressed a kiss to the side of Chloe's head, the poor kid.
"I got my food and... and... I walked back home towards my apartment. I felt like I was being followed so I walked faster... I was almost home but then I was grabbed from behind and pulled to the ground. It all happened so fast! They kicked me in my ribs and held me down so I couldn't move, then this girl punched me and said that I should've kept my mouth shut!" She burst into tears and Olivia growled, gently touching the bruise with her fingertips.
"They had no right to hurt you! I'm so sorry that they've done this to you!" Olivia whispered gently, she untangled herself and went to the kitchen to grab some ice, gently pressing it to her face and allowing her to curl up in her arms. She felt so protective of her already, all she wanted was to keep both of them safe.
"I know I made the right choice to help Beth but Olivia, everything has changed! After I was assaulted by the guy who hurt me... it took me weeks to leave my apartment! I didn't tell my mom either... you and Beth are the only ones who know! I was just getting my life back and now..." Chloe crumbled in Olivia's arms, and broke down! Crying the same way Beth had, crying over what she had lost.
"I know it hurts, sweetheart. You have a good cry, I'm here and I'm not going anywhere. You're stuck with me for life, kiddo!" Olivia whispered affectionately and Chloe smiled a very small smile, she felt safe. Olivia believed her, she knew what to say and for the first time in a long time she didn't mind being touched.
Hearing Beth come out from the bedroom, Olivia smiled warmly and pat the spot on the other side of her. Beth smiled softly and cuddled up on the other side, allowing Olivia to kiss her cheek. Olivia absentmindedly flicked through the tv, her arms full of the two girls. Once she'd found a funny film for them all to watch, she pulled them in closer. Beth caught a glimpse of her friend's eye and winced; it looked so painful! She felt her blood boil! Why couldn't they leave her alone! Both Beth and Chloe began to get restless, Olivia gently sat up and got them all a huge bowl of ice cream, that always helped when things were so shit. It did seem to work, the two girls seemed a lot calmer and pre occupied. They were so distracted that they didn't see Olivia slip off to the bathroom to ring Elliot.
"Hi El... how's everything going with the case?" Olivia said affectionately, being careful to not be too loud. The last thing she wanted to do was to unsettle the two girls when she had only just calmed them.
"Not fantastic to be honest, we still don't have enough to arrest Simon. I think we need to somehow get it out of him... what's wrong? Something's happened hasn't it?" Elliot said worriedly and Olivia frowned slightly, he always knew when she was hiding something.
"It's a lot deeper than I first thought El... I didn't want to tell you over the phone but, I think Simon might have something to do with Beth's mom's death. He lied to me about how she died... I don't know what to do, I want to kill him!" Olivia muttered and Elliot couldn't speak! He was horrified by what was now coming out, he never would've thought that this man would be capable of this.
"Not to mention, Beth's friend Chloe is now curled up on my couch after being beaten up by a bunch of college students because she took Beth to the hospital! They think she's a snitch, I mean what is going on El? Things are just spiralling and I'm getting too involved in the investigation side of things..." Olivia added and Elliot knew that she was right, she was too involved.
"It's going to be alright, Liv! Just do what you can... everything will be fine! I'll let you know if I have any updates, just be with the two girls..." Elliot said softly and Olivia hung up once she had said goodbye to him, her really been her strength over the last week. She snuck back into the room and smiled softly at the two girls, she sat between them and allowed them both to cuddle into her. There were no words exchanged and none needed to be, they were both safe and loved in this moment.
Chloe had been at Olivia's apartment for 5 hours and it was getting later and later. She was trying to put off going home, she couldn't bare it! She was terrified! Olivia could sense this and frowned, she gently rubbed her back.
"Would you like to stay over tonight? It's getting late!" She whispered affectionately and Chloe nodded gratefully, she was so relieved that she would be sleeping somewhere she felt safe.
"Tell you what, why don't we sleep in the living room! I can turn the sofa into a sofa bed and we can watch some movies how does that sound?" She grinned and the two teenagers smiled, that sounded great. Olivia made quick work of turning the sofa into a big comfortable bed and covered it with huge thick duvets.
The two girls very quickly got into bed whilst Olivia sorted out some popcorn and drinks, if she could make them forget their problems even for a night then it was better than nothing.
Her phone vibrated and Olivia glanced down at it, feeling like the wind had been knocked out of her when she saw what Elliot had texted her.
"I think Simon knows that we're onto him! Don't panic... but don't let the girls out of your sight. I'm heading over to yours now! X"
Olivia had gulped and made quick work of getting back into the lounge and with the two girls. She tried to smile and put on a brave face but in all honesty she was terrified! Hearing the front door open, she turned around expecting to see Elliot. Her face ended up draining of all colour.
"Simon!"
