A Sister From Tamaran! Part 2
At the iconic Titans Tower, the Teen Titans were going about their day as usual. The day's training drills were done, so all of them were doing things that most normal young adults do with their free time. Cyborg and Beast Boy were having a video game tournament and heckling each other at every opportunity, Robin was looking over and updating some files from their rogues gallery, Raven was reading as per usual, and Starfire was in the kitchen preparing another one of her Tamaranian dishes.
"Aw, you want to pass me? You want to pass me? But you can't pass me! You can't pass… you passed me!" Cyborg said as the tables were turned in his and Beast Boy's racing game.
"Tighten the turn, drift, and nitro!" laughed Beast Boy.
Raven just rolled her eyes and said, "Simple things amuse small minds, I suppose.".
"Let them have their fun, Raven. They're not hurting anyone. Well, unless you count hurting each other's pride." Robin said.
They suddenly heard cheering from Cyborg as he regained first place.
"Aw, yeah! Back in the lead!" cheered Cyborg.
Beast Boy scowled with anime steam rising up from his head, much to Cyborg's amusement. Starfire didn't really understand the point of the game the two were playing, but so long as they were having fun, that was enough for her. But this line of thought made her pause as she was gathering ingredients. Her thoughts drifted to her sister, Blackfire.
She remembers a time when she and Blackfire were very young children. They had been almost inseparable as little children before Tamaran was invaded by the Gordanians. She and Blackfire would play together, laugh, listen in on stories told by the warriors of their planet, all without a care in the galaxy. At the time, Starfire couldn't imagine her sister ever becoming such a heartless, power hungry person like she has become now. She often wondered what caused this change in her once beloved sister? Why did she turn on her(Starfire) and on their people? Though, deep down, Starfire knew exactly why.
It was how she had been treated by their own people.
Ever since she was little, Blackfire has been treated poorly by their people, and even by their own parents. Due to a rare birth defect, Blackfire was barely able to absorb solar radiation to use the powers that her people were known for. Add in to the fact that when Blackfire was born Tamaran had been invaded, and people took that as a bad omen. Hell, Blackfire had to be experimented on just like Starfire was in order to both use Star Bolts and actually fly!
'And now, I wonder, had Blackfire been treated fairly and with more respect, would she have never strayed down this path of darkness she has found herself on?' Starfire pondered to herself.
"Something on your mind, Starfire?" Raven asked.
"I was thinking about my sister." Starfire said.
Robin looked up from the central computer and asked, "Who, Blackfire? What about her?".
"It may sound difficult to believe, but my sister was not always the villain that we know her as. There was a time when she was much like I am; happy and at peace." Starfire confessed as her friends listened. "But as we were growing up, I did not see just how poorly she was being treated. Her birthright as heir to the throne of the royal family was unjustly stripped away from her simply because of circumstances outside of her control when she was born. And I now realize that all this time, Blackfire has been hurting inside without me or anyone else in our family ever truly noticing."
She sighed and leaned against the counter.
"I can not help but wonder if I could have prevented her from becoming as she has." Starfire said.
Pausing the game, Cyborg stood up and walked to the kitchenette where he placed a hand on Starfire's shoulder.
"Believe it or not, I think there are some people out there who know how you feel, Star." he said.
"Yeah. I mean, I always wondered if I could have done something to keep Metallo from becoming so obsessed with hunting down the Brain." Beast Boy added.
"Unfortunately, I don't think your people would have made it easy for you to keep Blackfire from becoming a villain." Raven said, closing her book.
"Yeah, Starfire. And honestly, there's only so much you can do for a person on your own. But we'll do everything we can to help your sister turn her life around, Starfire. I promise. You won't be alone this time." Robin assured.
Starfire was thankful for the thoughtful words from her friends. It helped to ease her mind a little bit. She knows that it will be a long and difficult road for her sister to finally reintegrate into society, but she knows that she can do it. And Robin was right about one thing. This time, Blackfire wouldn't be alone. Because Starfire isn't about to abandon her. But before anyone could say anything else, an alert suddenly sounded from the main screen. Robin pressed a few keys, and a news feed began playing.
"Breaking news! The villainous older sister of our beloved hero, Blackfire, has escaped from prison and made her way here to Earth. Eyewitnesses report that as she was about to be apprehended by police drones, a Red Lantern intervened. Amateur footage has been provided by a witness who recorded the fight on their phone. And let me tell you, amateur is right." reported a news woman.
The Titans watched the shaky, slightly blurry footage and saw that Blackfire had indeed been fighting police drones before the drones were destroyed by a Red Lantern. One who was using a construct of a giant spatula, of all things, as a warhammer! They seemed to talk for a minute, but the person recording had been too far away to catch what they were saying before the two of them eventually flew off.
"Speak of the devil, and she shall appear." quipped Beast Boy.
"But what's a Red Lantern doing here on Earth?" Raven asked.
"I don't know. But we're gonna find out." Robin said before he ran out of the room with a shout of, "Titans, go!".
The rest of the Titans were quick to follow suit, but Starfire hesitated for a moment. Something didn't seem right to her. She knew that her sister was going to be released for parole, so what reason would she have for breaking out of prison?
She flew after her friends, determined to find out.
