Kurt groaned in frustration as he stared at his closet. He couldn't deny it anymore. It was becoming obvious that he wasn't just gaining weight. He knew everyone would know soon enough. His quirk was a huge help, he didn't have to worry about buying new clothes to fit his ever expanding belly. He just always seemed hungry no matter how much he ate. And the proof of that indulgence was staring back at him.
He knew there had been whispers in school. He had heard them as they passed. He wasn't sure if they had guessed yet, or if people thought he was just getting fat but he knew they would have to tell people soon. He was just glad no one had been rude enough to ask.
So far the only faculty members that knew outside of Isabelle and Elliot were the Headmaster and Aceso. Kurt knew, however, that even his baggiest sweaters were not going to cut it to conceal his baby bump any longer. He pulled on his favorite pants, once again expanding the waist, as Blaine entered from the bathroom drying his hair.
"We are going to have to tell people soon. People have to know." Kurt said as he pulled on yet another comfy sweater thankful it was November. He couldn't imagine trying to hide this in the summer heat.
Blaine wrapped his body around Kurt's, his hands cupping his bump lovingly and kissed his cheek before saying, "The doctor gave you a clean bill of health yesterday. You're already 16 weeks. We can just tell them you know. But if you are uncomfortable we don't have to."
"It's not that I am uncomfortable," Kurt sighed, "I just don't want to deal with the questions. Maybe today is the best time. Thanksgiving break is almost here."
"Just let me know when you are ready, you know everyone is going to be over the moon for us right?" Blaine said, kissing his cheek again.
Kurt's decision happened in a moment. He was happily listening to his Junior design students reminiscing about their first ever costume project as they looked over their latest request forms. Seeing Sura and her fellow classmates enthusing about his lesson made him want to tell them. He wanted to share with this class in particular. (And no matter if anyone ever asked he didn't have a favorite student, even though deep down he still had a soft spot for Sura.)
Before calling the class to order he texted Blaine.
I want to tell them. Now.
Only to receive an almost instant response of:
Perfect
"No fair," Micah whined, "Why do teachers get to have their phones out during class and we don't?"
Micah's mischievous smile told Kurt he was only teasing.
"Well when one of you has a child, then maybe we can make an exception too." Kurt teased back.
He took a deep breath, "Before we begin going over your newest project, I have an announcement to make. I'm afraid I won't quite finish out the year with you. In May, Mr. Hummel and I are going to have a baby."
No inappropriate questions were asked, not one single look of confusion or disgust, nothing but simple unadulterated joy was to be seen in the classroom that day. He basked in it as each student chattered over the others before calling the class to order.
He had barely left his classroom after his final class of the day when Mercedes ran up to him from the work room.
"Is what they are saying true? Are you really-"
Kurt couldn't help but laugh at her excited smile. "Word really spreads quickly around this school only one passing period and you already know. But yes, I'm pregnant."
"Kurt, that really is amazing, I am so happy for you." She beamed at him. "Anything you need from me, I'm here. I can even fill in for your classes when needed. Really, just say the word."
Kurt laughed again, "It's great to hear that because I am due two weeks before the semester ends, so I'll probably have to take you up on that."
Arm in arm they walked and chatted as they left the building. Kurt knew he was receiving more looks than normal, but in the moment it didn't bother him. He could hear their excited whispers and it was to be expected. Since being here no Dalton teacher had had a baby, man or woman. It was bound to be big news, whoever it was. He was just ready to be home.
As soon as Kurt entered the house, Elster was upon him enthusiastically telling him about her day. He was tired, but would never allow his daughter to know just how exhausted he was. He listened as he led her back to the couch and sat next to Cooper.
"Do you have homework?" he finally asked in between stories.
She pouted, "Only a little."
"Then why don't you run and get it. You can tell me about the rest of your day as you do it." Kurt suggested.
He watched her little form bounce up the stairs before turning to Cooper. "You still don't mind picking her up from school everyday?" He asked for what had to be the hundredth time.
"It's a highlight of my day." Cooper smiled. "You, on the other hand, look like you are about to fall asleep."
Kurt gave a tired chuckle, "Who knew growing an entire human would be so exhausting. I'm tired, but mainly from being on my feet all day. I don't know if I can stand to cook, it may be cafeteria take-out again tonight."
"There is no fault in that. At least Dalton's food can be considered healthy. Elliot and I don't even have an excuse."
Kurt shook his head, "I don't know I'm gaining weight faster than I ever thought possible. I swear at this rate my quirk won't be able to keep up stretching my pants everyday"
Cooper patted his knee, "I highly doubt that."
"We told the students today," Kurt said, eyeing Cooper with a mischievous grin. "Have you and Elliot decided when he is going to tell his students about the engagement?"
Cooper blushed, a sight that highly amused Kurt. "Perhaps when we have finally set a date. All Elliot knows is he wants to get through the school year before we do it."
"I know I have said it a million times, but I am so happy for you two. And no matter what I am ready, willing and able to make your suits. You could say I was built for it." Kurt teased.
"How about we let you finish making this baby first, then we will talk." Cooper laughed before adding, "Is there anything I can do before I head out?"
"Is it too early in the pregnancy to ask if you can bring me a glass of water?" Kurt asked not wanting to move.
"One glass of water coming right up."
By the time Coop was handing Kurt his water, Elster was back. He kissed her fondly on the head promising to see her the next day and left.
Kurt, glass in hand perched on the couch ready to listen all about his daughter's day as she colored her paper turkey in vibrant colors. Once Blaine joined them, cuddling Kurt from behind and rubbing the swell of his belly, Kurt couldn't think of a more perfect end to a long day.
The month passed full of celebration, Christmas shopping and long days. Most days ended with Kurt on the couch, his back aching feeling drained but happy. His hips had really begun to spread as his belly continued to expand. He was looking forward to a day when he could exist pain free. Kurt kept waiting for dysphoria to rear its ugly head again, but so far only happy thoughts were to be found. He hoped it was because he knew that there was a reason for these changes, at the end of this they would have a baby that was both of theirs. It was something he thought he would never have and the possibility made it even more important.
It had been a particularly trying day for Kurt, he wasn't sure he had sat down even at lunch. A last minute costume emergency had sprung up, so he had spent his lunch helping Mercedes repair a few of the seniors' costumes while they ate and talked. His classes were finishing up their midterm designs so Kurt had hustled around his room, checking work and helping fix problems. He was finally glad to be off his feet and resting. Christmas break had finally begun, Elster was happily chatting away on the floor about all the plans she had for break.
Kurt momentarily lost the thread of what she was saying as a strange fluttering began in his belly. This wasn't new but had been happening more often in the last week. Soon the fluttering turned to a roiling sensation and a small smile sprang to his lips. Wanting to be sure, Kurt placed his hand on the spot only to feel a slight movement under it.
"Papa?" Elster interrupted. "Did you hear what I said?"
Wanting to seize the moment, he called to Blaine in the kitchen and beckoned Elster to him.
"You want to feel the baby?" He asked.
Elster nodded a glimpse of the shy girl she used to be. Kurt guided her hand to his stomach just as he felt it again. Her eyes grew big and she laughed, "Weird."
Blaine rushed to his side, "Can you really?"
"I've felt little movements for a while, but feel," he said, guiding Blaine's hand to the same spot. "Your baby is saying hello."
Before Kurt knew what was happening Blaine lifted his shirt and replaced his hand with a gentle kiss. "Hi baby," he cooed.
Elster giggled again and Blaine grabbed her around the waist and began kissing her cheeks laughing and saying, "Hi big sis."
Happy tears sprang to Kurt's eyes unbidden. He wouldn't change this moment for the world.
Christmas was busy, filled with celebrations and Kurt indulging in way too much food. Since becoming pregnant once he recovered from his bug, he had been almost insatiable in every sense of the word. Be it food or Blaine, Kurt couldn't seem to get enough. It was no wonder he felt like he was getting bigger everyday. However, it being Christmas, Kurt couldn't restrain himself like he previously could. However, on Boxing day a new problem arose.
All day, there was just something he wanted so badly he could almost taste it. Only problem was, he couldn't quite pinpoint what it was. He had braved the grocery store, browsing every aisle. And nothing seemed to fit the bill. They were curled up on the couch later that day and as Elster played with her new toys, Blaine kept asking questions.
"Sweet or savory?"
"Sweet."
"Chocolatey, fruity?"
Kurt thought a moment, "Fruity I think"
"And it's not cheesecake?" Blaine asked, knowing it was his favorite.
A memory flashed in Kurt's mind and he sat up in realization. "I know what it is!"
And then he groaned as it sank in, "but it doesn't matter, we can't get it."
"What?" Blaine asked.
Tears sprang to his eyes, "I ate it as a kid, it's this dumb cereal they used to sell. It's called Fruity Pebbles. But unless you can go shopping in a quirkless world it's no use."
Neither thought Elster was paying them particular attention until she piped up, "I can find it if you have a picture. I have been practicing with Headmaster Hina. I can do it if I know what it is."
Kurt let out a sob at how amazing his daughter was but also knowing he was going to disappoint her. "I'm sorry honey, I never took a picture of it. Papa is just being silly. It's fine, I promise."
"But I want to help," She insisted.
Kurt held his arms out to her and she readily crawled into his ever decreasing lap. They all three snuggled together, "I know you want to help, so how about we cuddle and watch a movie. My craving will pass."
He cradled Elster in his arms as the movie played in front of him, not taking any of it in. He couldn't wait to see Elster as a big sister. She already had a heart bigger than most people he knew. Since her initial tearful reaction, she had taken to the idea of having a sibling remarkably well. She had even bribed Cooper to take her shopping after school to buy the baby a stuffie for Christmas. Seeing the pride on her face when she presented the gift to them, had melted his heart and brought a fresh wave of hormonal tears.
Until the baby came he vowed to savor every one of these little moments they still had as a family of three.
A few days later, Elster was off on an adventure with Elliot and Cooper while Kurt and Blaine found themselves once again in Dr. Houghton's waiting room. The baby was moving like crazy now, not helping Kurt's nervous feeling. They were finally getting their anatomy scan today.
"You think they will have wings?" Kurt asked.
Blaine chuckled, "Who knows, I mean it's possible."
"Do you think the doctors will be able to tell?"
"I don't know, I guess I could ask my mom. Want me to text her?" Blaine asked.
Before Kurt could answer a nurse was calling their name. They were led down the hall to an exam room where Kurt was weighed and his vitals were taken. Before she left the nurse said, "The tech will be right in."
True to her word, in almost an instant the nurse was replaced with another woman who introduced herself as Hana. "Alright, Kurt, let's just pull up your shirt a bit and take a look at that baby of yours."
Once Kurt's belly was exposed she was squirting jelly on his abdomen and the wand was again there. She moved it around for a moment, the image on the screen changing with the movement. Both their eyes focused on the screen and Blaine squeezed his hand tightly. It wasn't like before, yes, it was still just vague blobs at first but suddenly Kurt could see it. Right there on the screen was a face. Not just any face, but their baby's face.
"Okay so this is Baby A." Hana said and Kurt's brain screeched to a halt.
