Senku hummed to himself as he made his way down the steps of the main entrance to catch up with Kohaku. He had to admit he was quite nervous, but he did well to hide it. He finally reached the top of the staircase, the nervousness and giddiness he managed to keep at bay was thrown out the window the moment he saw Kohaku.
She didn't notice him yet as her back was to him. Instead of her usual ponytail, she had her hair down and a simple, deep blue dress with floral print. He chuckled to himself, seeing her signature hair was nowhere to be seen, allowing him to fully admire her long hair that fluttered with the breeze. He could never tell if her hair was a beautiful deep daisy yellow or something that could rival the sunglow.
Kohaku felt his eyes on him as she looked over her shoulder and spun on her heel. "How long were you standing there?" She asked, crossing her arms over her chest.
"Not long," He replied as they met halfway. "You look beautiful." He said, taking her hand and kissing the back of it.
Kohaku blushed, clearing her throat as she took back her hand and brushed a strand of hair behind her ear. "It isn't like you to be this sweet, you know. Anyway, don't mind me. Thank you." She cleared her throat and kept her head high as she walked past him.
Confused, he caught her arm. "Where are you going?"
Kohaku raised an eyebrow. "To the seaside? Aren't we having our…erm–date there?"
Senku chuckled, pulling her towards him. "No, no, no. Although I'd see why you'd think that, I think a change of scenery would be best."
Kohaku's face softened as she nodded, "That's a good idea. Where to?"
Suddenly, Senku made the picnic basket on his arm known. He chuckled with amusement as Kohaku's eyebrows furrowed. "I hope you're hungry."
Kohaku giggled, "Quite. Well, so you're the reason why I smell it from upstairs, didn't know you'd wake up that early."
"It was never a secret, Kohaku."
Senku led Kohaku a bit away from their townhouse where they're staying but not far enough to where they couldn't make out the building. Kohaku took a moment to catch her breath, brushing a few loose strands as she admired the pretty view in front of her.
The rolling hills fills with flowers sprouting randomly throughout the grass, the warm sunshine against her cheeks and the welcoming breeze that created a comfortable chill. She forgot how much she loved and miss this. Being popular is quite a hussle nowadays, she can't go somewhere alone without her bodyguards following her, and everyone who'll be seen with her will either be sensationalized or sexualized by the media.
"Are you alright?" Senku called from behind her. She glanced over her shoulder, seeing he was a bit of a way up the hill. "We're almost at the perfect spot!"
Kohaku huffed, but there was an amused smile at her lips as she picked up her skirt and hiked the rest of the way towards him. Senku waited for her to reach him, offering his hand halfway as he helped her up the steep hill. Kohaku exhaled, her much smaller hand in his as she looked at the view below them.
"I forgot how beautiful the countryside is," Kohaku whispered, that small smile still on her lips.
"Yes, I think we often find ourselves wrapped up in our work," Senku admitted, slightly squeezing Kohaku's hand, causing her cheeks to blush red. "Come on, we're almost there." He let go of her hand, sending her a quick wink as they continued their trek.
After what felt like hours, Senku declared the perfect spot just over the hill. Kohaku noticed it was pretty much abandoned; not much of a trail was seen telling Kohaku people barely came there.
In the basket Senku held, he pulled out a decent-sized blanket, at first struggling with spreading it out completely until Kohaku offered her help. He gave her a thankful grin as they began to set up.
They settled under two big trees, using their footwear as weights to keep each corner of the blanket from lifting from the comfortable breeze.
Kohaku sat down first, giggling as Senku excitedly started to pull out the various foods he packed.
"You know," she continued, "I never thought I'd see you playing the piano in the middle of nowhere. It's a nice surprise."
Senku grinned, a rare display of satisfaction evident in his eyes. "Well, life is full of surprises, isn't it? Who would've thought that I'd find myself here, tinkering with keys instead of gears?"
Kohaku, taking a seat beside him. "Maybe you're discovering a new side of yourself, Senku. A side that appreciates the quieter moments. Who taught you how to play?"
Senku raised an eyebrow, a playful glint in his eyes. "She's a friend from back then. Anyway, are you trying to turn me into a poet now, Kohaku?"
It's a she?
She laughed, nudging him lightly. "No, but maybe you could use a break from all the science once in a while. Enjoy the beauty around you." She raised her head, feeling the soft breeze. "I think I'd love to meet your friend," she teased as she took the onigiri and a sushi box from him.
"Well, I don't think that's possible; she's in a faraway place now. What? Never thought I could play better than you?" He chuckled as he stuffed his face with a few slices of rice balls, handing one to Kohaku, who nibbled on a slice. "I do hope you're hungry. I think I packed enough food for lunch and dinner."
Kohaku smiled, sitting on her haunches as she peered through the picnic basket. Her stomach growled at the sight of the dorayakis and of dangos, but now seeing the assortment of fruits and wine made her ravenous. "I am starving."
"Help yourself, Kohaku." Senku smiled as he started to slice the dorayakis for them. "I see you eyeing that wine."
Kohaku rolled her eyes but didn't choose to protest, grabbing the bottle of wine and searching the picnic basket for two glasses. She poured equal glasses, handing it to Senku as in exchange, he handed her a sushi.
"Thank you," Kohaku said with a small smile.
"It's nothing, I too deserved a break you know" He replied, taking a sip of the wine and sighing in satisfaction.
Kohaku took a bite out of the dango, not realizing how truly hungry she was until her hand was completely empty. She downed her glass of wine, feeling a slight buzz.
"Another glass?" Senku grinned as he reached for the wine.
"Please," Kohaku said, tipping her glass towards him as he poured a third of the way. She sighed, leaning back on her arm as she admired the view in front of her.
Beside her, Senku was more relaxed. Using both elbows to prop himself up as he played with the glass of wine in one hand. Out of the corner of his eye, he couldn't help but steal in a few glances of Kohaku.
It was very bizarre for him to be able to have a date with the woman who asks him to pretend to be her boyfriend a few weeks ago. There's never been a dull moment for him since then. Aside from his father who cried tears of joy upon knowing he finally got himself a girlfriend, the media is now onto him. So to finally find some semblance of quietness on a place like this one where the media won't follow them is lucky enough.
He'd knew from the very moment he laid eyes on her pretty azure ones that she wasn't going to disappear from his life. Never again. He'll made sure of that.
Overlooking the vast expanse of the sea, his thoughts involuntarily turned to Kohaku. The rhythmic crash of waves against the shore seemed to echo the cadence of his contemplation. The salty breeze tousled his locks of hair as he gazed at the horizon, his mind momentarily drifting away from the scientific puzzles that usually consumed his thoughts.
Watching Kohaku as she admired the view, he couldn't help but appreciate the way her eyes reflected the endless expanse of the sea – a mixture of wonder, determination, and a hint of vulnerability that was seldom seen. Senku found himself intrigued by this blend, a concoction of emotions that defied his usual scientific classifications.
Now, after barely scraping by with their playful truce to see if he can play the piano better than her, he was met with surprise. Such a surprise that could be equivalent to a teenage boy finding out their crush also shared his feelings.
"How much longer are you going to keep staring at me, Ishigami?" Kohaku asked, her voice full of amusement as she turned to look at him.
The ever so cool scientist, blinked, trying to calm the blush rising in his cheeks. He cleared his throat and sat up. "I'm simply admiring the view."
"The view is in front of you, Senku," Kohaku joked with a quirk of her brow.
"Ah, I beg to differ. The prettiest view is sitting right next to me," Senku smirked, catching her eye as he took a sip of his wine glass. "Didn't I tell you that you look beautiful today?"
This time it was Kohaku's turn to blush, she traced the rim of her wine glass with her finger, averting her eyes. "Yes, you have. That's the third time."
"Oh, so you heard that? Hmm didn't know you'd be that attentive last night…"
Her cheeks turned warm upon remembering their sexual sessions last night. It was not difficult to get used to him. Each time she's pleasured from the foreplay, she thought it will be different. But it doesn't and the good part is… he knew how to coax pleasure from her despite the pain. She's glad she gave it to him first, the best experience she can ever have.
But most of it all, the fact that she knew this isn't permanent. She knows he is going to dispose her in time. And she will do the same, too. She guesses that's what she really needs. A straight to the point honest relationship.
Sensing her adorable embarrassment, Senku turned his attention back to the actual view in front of them. They weren't sitting too far from the water, instead of the sand meeting the shoreline, they were sitting up top of a hill. The cliff that was a few feet in front of them offered a decent drop into the crisp water below.
"I love the feeling of the sunshine against my skin," Senku revealed after taking the last sip of his wine glass. He set it beside him, taking a moment to lean back completely and soak up the warm sun rays.
Kohaku not too subtly stared at his outstretched neck, save for the silver airplane necklace he usually wears, she's also noting a few scars that left her mind with questions. She caught herself, inwardly scolding herself as she did the same. She balanced her wine glass on the grass and got comfortable on the surprisingly soft blanket under them.
"May I ask you something, Kohaku?" He asked, eyes closed and still basking in the sunlight.
"What is it?," She replied
"Did something happen at the hospital?" He asked, his words were light, as if he was being cautious. She eyed him from beside her, watching as his eyes fluttered open.
She gritted her teeth, she don't want to get pissed but it was her problems that sometimes made her feel on edge everytime, especially if someone talked to her about it. Why are they talking about it anyway? Didn't she agree to be with him now to lessen the burden? Something that'll wipe out her problems for awhile? Why the need to talk to her about it?
"I already told you, it's—"
"You expect me to believe that?"
She sighs. "I could give you a simple answer or the one you want to hear," Kohaku replied after some time, turning her head to look into his eyes.
Kohaku bit her lip, part of her didn't want him to know about her problems, but that same part also didn't want to share.
Senku kept his gaze and said, "I want to hear the answer you're willing to share with me. Not because you have to…but because you see me…as a friend."
Kohaku blinked; a bit surprised by his honest yet genuine reply. Truth was, she wanted to trust him–but her background made it difficult for such things to take place. He was intrigued by her and enamored by her beauty, but was he prepared to know what kind of person she truly was?
"Why? I may have cancelled our trip, but here I am. It's not really that important, Senku." She blurted out, inwardly kicking herself for how abrupt that was.
He was a man with careful calculations, yet when it came to her, he couldn't predict anything. "You think I'll be disappointed? Is that it?"
Kohaku saw how serious he looked right now. A feeling dawned on her that he's probably done with her. Like maybe he's pissed but looks cool on the outside when it comes with her.
However, there was also a hint of sadness in his tone, something Kohaku hadn't heard before. She looked at him. "It's not that important, really. Concerned are we now, Ishigami? You are surprising me every day, Senku."
Senku chuckled, "Well…I for one know how hard it is when you always keep things to yourself. I almost lose a friend once when she didn't share her problems on me." He looked off into the distance, the moment that sentence left his lips, Kohaku could feel the slight tension in the air. Despite his usual, cool demeanor, she could see a hint of sadness in his eyes. As if he didn't want to tell her something. "I know how hard it is being in her shoes. I know it's not much, but I want you to know someone's always willing to listen, to give you some sort of light in this otherwise dark reality."
"Oh," Kohaku replied, tucking another long strand of hair behind her ear as the cool breeze went. "I'm sorry to hear that."
Senku tore his eyes away from the scene in front of him, capturing her gaze. His cold eyes turned soft, and a small smile on his lips. "I'm always willing to listen, Kohaku."
"It's really fine, Senku." Kohaku replied, surprising the both of them when she placed her hand on his. She squeezed it, giving him another beautiful smile as she retracted her hand and reached for another rice balls. "I also have to commend you."
"For?" He smiled, feeling the tension drain away as he watched her reach for another slice of sushi.
"Your choice of ingredients are quite delicious," Kohaku admitted.
Thinking she wouldn't be persuaded, Senku just chuckled and never pushed enough. "I only pick the best for you, Kohaku." He narrowed his eyes and abruptly stood up. She thinks she may have offended him for a second for not sharing anything, when it's all for his own good.
"Where are you going?" Kohaku asked, as he held his hand to her.
"Don't you want to take a dip in the water?" Senku suggested, a smirk on his lips. "The weather is perfect for it."
"Are you mad?" Kohaku said, still taking his hand as he gently pulled her up.
"Come on! We're the only people here!" Senku grinned as he pulled her along, they crossed the small distance to the end of the cliff. Kohaku stood at the end, feeling the breeze blow her skirt and enjoying the way the sunshine felt on her skin.
"We can't jump in! I don't have my bathing suit!" Kohaku insisted, spinning on her heel as soon as she saw Senku unbutton his shirt. She hugged her middle as she cleared her throat. "We don't have any swimwear, Senku!"
"Who cares? As long as most of my clothes are dry then I'll be fine, and you have your undergarments, right?" Senku said, his voice was suddenly right next to her ear. She felt goosebumps start to rise on the back of her neck, gaining courage to turn around.
"I know what you're thinking! It's not for swimming, mind you…"
As if the blush in her cheeks weren't hot enough, she got a full, magnificent view of Senku's body. He stripped down to his boxers. He sent her a wink. "If you don't want to come in, that's fine. Just make sure no animals nearby runs off with my clothes," He said as he backed up, getting ready to plummet himself off of the cliff. "My jacket is almost as expensive as you are!"
"Wait–!" Kohaku tried to stop him but was cut off when he sprinted at full speed towards the cliff and jumped off and into the water. She picked up her skirt and rushed to the cliff, frantically scanning the water until he popped up. She exhaled in relief. "You're mad!"
"And you're missing out!" Senku laughed as he popped out of the water and disappeared under the water again, only to resurface. "The water is radiant today! Come on, Kohaku! I already saw everything under your dress you know!"
"You pervert!" Kohaku hissed, but with a small smile. She watched him swim under the crisp water, her heart drumming against her chest as she tried to weigh out the pros and cons of the utterly immature decision to jump into the water.
Have some fun, Kohaku, she thought to herself.
Putting on a brave face, she began to reach behind her and undid the few buttons of her dress. It wasn't long until she was just in her undergarments, and the cool wind bit at her bare skin.
Down below, Senku had stopped his splashing, his eyes laser-focused on Kohaku's semi-nude body. Though he was still a gentleman, he turned around, fighting the urge to stare at her beautiful physique. "Finally joining in, lioness?" He called over his shoulder with a grin.
She didn't reply, instead, the sound of her jumping into the water confirmed it for him. He spun around and swam towards her, waiting for her to resurface. Kohaku gasped, startling Senku for a second as she wiped away the water from her face.
She coughed, brushing away strands of hair out of her face as she tried to compose herself. She was met with the prettiest pair of crimson eyes, his smile charming yet gentle as he floated in front of her. His usually neatly arranged spiky hair now dripping wet and hanging loosely around his face. The strands clung to his skin, emphasizing the tousled and disheveled look. Water droplets glistened on the dark locks as they framed his face.
"I never would have thought I'd be treated on this date," He teased, unable to help himself.
Kohaku's cheeks were still pink with embarrassment, she looked absolutely adorable with her wet hair and pink pout. She splashed him, coughing at her and holding his hands up as a shield. "Say something like that again, and you're going to wish I didn't jump in here with you."
"Damn, lioness! I surrender!" Senku said with his hands up. "I yield!" He pleaded, showing his hands with a "T" sign. Kohaku stopped, huffing in victory as she made the move to swim away. It wasn't until she felt strong arms wrap around her body. She yelled in surprise, unable to stop laughing when Senku pulled her close and spun her around in the water.
"Let me go this instant, Senku!" Kohaku shouted, trying to get out of his hold. She managed to break free, reaching behind her and tickling at his sides. He relented, releasing her and was met with another splash full of water.
"That's a dirty move, Kohaku!" Senku pouted, swimming towards her again. Kohaku let out a girlish scream—nothing what one would expect from the often-rumored mean-looking singer—but she didn't care. A big smile on her lips and the laughter mixing with the frantic splashes of water created the light-hearted atmosphere around them.
Kohaku was glad she was quite the agile swimmer, managing to slip through Senku's arms again as she dived underwater. Although Senku was a bit larger than her, he was just as adept in the water as she was.
Before he could reach her, however, Kohaku dove underwater again, this time lower than before. Senku followed her in, not only taken aback by how she suddenly looked as if she were a mermaid in the water. Her blonde hair was like sunshine reflecting above them as he floated around her almost in a mythical way, causing him to freeze and admire.
Kohaku smiled underwater, beckoning him to follow her as she playfully swam away. Senku chuckled, swimming after her as a few little fish creatures decided to join in on their little game.
Along the way, the couple saw various wildlife. From tortoises that took a chance to swim around them to a few harmonious dolphins under them, the couple felt as if they were just two teenagers, enjoying what nature had to offer them.
Kohaku could feel her lungs starting to beg for air, but that didn't stop her from giggling at the sight in front of her. Senku was suddenly surrounded by a few dolphins, one of them managed to scrub itself onto him before they resurfaced.
Kohaku gasped for air, refueling her lungs as the fits of mirth escaped her lips. Senku popped up soon after, an adorable look of embarrassment on his lips as he said, "What are you laughing at?"
"It seems like the dolphins are quite smitten with you," Kohaku said, squeaking when Senku closed the distance between them. "Stop, no!" She laughed as he wrapped his arms around her waist and spun them around. He tickled her sides, taking revenge for her tactics.
"Do you surrender now?" Senku said, hands still securely wrapped around her waist as she got comfortable in his hold. Her long legs found themselves wrapped around his waist while she rested her hands on his shoulders.
"You win, so yes, I surrender." Kohaku smiled, her hands locking behind his head. It didn't register to the couple the compromising position they were in. Instead of releasing her and creating distance between them, Senku kept his gentle grip around her.
Kohaku didn't seem to mind it as much as she did. She felt…comfortable in his embrace. Luckily, a leaf stuck in Senku's wet hair distracted her. She picked at it, twirling the little leaf in between her fingers and giggled.
"I love your laugh," Senku blurted out, his voice soft and gentle as Kohaku threw the leaf to the side.
Kohaku smiles, avoiding his eyes as she brushed back his two locks of hair, revealing his forehead and handsome face. She surprised him again when she leaned forward, his heart was drumming against his chest as she lightly pressed her lips against his cheek. "You're not too bad yourself," She whispered, her breath was hot against his damp skin.
Senku was suddenly aware of their situation. He felt her strong legs wrapped around his waist, her bottom just brushing against his growing hard member. The crispness of the water did well with cooling them down, but the obvious desire they tried so hard to keep within themselves beat with every second that passed.
Kohaku's fingers traced the nape of his neck, playing with his greenish white hair while the other gripped at his shoulder. Kohaku's eyes caught the glint of Senku's necklace, a small paper airplane pendant hanging delicately against his chest. She couldn't help but be intrigued by this seemingly ordinary accessory.
She batted her eyelashes, looking at the way he looked delectable with the few water droplets slipping down. She gulped, almost holding back a moan when she felt her hard nipples that were barely hidden by her flimsy bra brush against his skin.
"Senku," Kohaku found herself whispering.
"Kohaku," Senku replied, his voice huskier than before as he gripped her long hair behind her neck and tilted his head towards hers.
Before their lips could touch, the sky above them started to rumble. The couple jumped at the sudden downpour of fat, raindrops hitting the water's surface. Kohaku and Senku gasped, looking up at the gray sky and swam towards the shore and sprinted to their clothes.
"Hurry, lioness!" Senku said, scooping up both his and Kohaku's clothes. Kohaku grabbed her sandals while Senku did the same. They rushed to their little spot under the trees, thankful they offered some coverage as they quickly packed their picnic away.
With what little shade the trees provided them they dressed hurriedly, Kohaku tried to shiver out of her teeth as she stared at the downpour. "Where did the rain come from? It was sunny a moment ago."
"Climate change," Senku said. He chuckled, "You might not notice it because you're so playful, but rain clouds were already forming in the distance."
Kohaku smiled, though she didn't miss his accurate observations. "You saw that?"
"Yeah, this vacation will be a waste if we don't go for a swim you know?" Senku said as he handed her the picnic basket and slipped on his jacket. "Guess whose fault it is for moving our original vacation date to stormy days?"
Kohaku grunted. "I'm already sorry. Then why'd you agree if you know it's going to rain?"
Senku chuckled, taking the picnic basket from her. He intertwined his fingers in hers, and she squeezed his hand as if it were completely normal to them. "I'll be busy the following days. We have to go back to our house. If we stand here any longer, I think we're both going to catch a cold."
Kohaku nodded, pressing her body closer to Senku. He was surprised, but didn't mention it as she said, "How far was it? Surely you memorized the way back right?"
"It's not that far, you know. If we run," Kohaku sighed.
"Well, let's go. I don't think I can stand under this tree for any longer."
Senku grinned, holding her close as he tested the rainfall with an outstretched hand. "Come on, it's eased up. Let's go."
A few minutes later. "See? I told you it's not that far."
"That's only because you skate your way down the cliff."
"Ah, I guess it's not my fault; I work smarter, not harder, unlike someone else." Kohaku rolled her eyes at him. He opened the door to their home. "Come in, the rain is only getting heavier."
Kohaku wrapped her arms around her waist, stepped into the empty home, and looked around. The home where they stayed for a few days was a cozy house, not too big but not too small, but perfectly decorated to resemble a middle-class family in the countryside. "What made you pick this place, by the way?" She asked as she stepped further into the living room.
"I know the people who live here," Senku said as he closed the door behind them. He walked through the small living room and sought out a candle on the kitchen drawers. He bent down with a groan, looking around for firewood and matches. "They often go on family trips around this time of year."
"How do you know these people?" Kohaku asked, crossing the room and handing Senku a box of matches she found in a nearby table drawer.
He muttered a small thanks as he lit the candle, holding his hands out as he watched the flame start to grow. Kohaku got comfortable on the couch, still feeling slightly uncomfortable from the dampness of her dress, but she kept her mouth shut.
As if he were thinking the same thing, Senku started to slip off his coat, draping it behind the armchair. He then started to undo his buttons, alarming Kohaku. "What are you doing?" She hissed.
He was already halfway done, most of his shirt was completely unbuttoned when he faced her. "Isn't it obvious? I'm going to let my clothes dry. They're still wet, and I don't know about you, but I cannot stand wet clothes clinging to my skin."
"Well, yes but I don't know if I'm ready to see you parade around in just your undergarments," Kohaku said as she crossed her arms. She tore her gaze away from him when he slipped off his shirt, draping it against the couch across from her.
He chuckled. "It seems like you're trying to convince yourself you aren't excited to see that."
Huffing, Kohaku grabbed her sandals and chucked it across the room. Senku dodged out of the way while also successfully catching it. He set it down with a shake of his head. "Disappointed?"
"You're insufferable," Kohaku said.
"And you're being stubborn. I'm not doing this to make you uncomfortable," Senku said. He wasn't making Kohaku uncomfortable, but instead he was distracting her to no end. "If we sit in our damp clothes, we'll get sick in no time," he pointed out. "I promise I won't be anything unless you want. And if I do, you have all the right to kill me."
Kohaku rolled her eyes. She knew he was right, but she hated it. Even though they saw each other practically naked many times in bed, they were in a much more intimate setting again. Was it hormones or little fantasies she'd read from those ridiculously addicting romance novels?
"I'll turn around and give you your privacy," He said as he grabbed his jacket from the armchair. He surprised her when he draped the soft garment over her lap. "You can also use this to cover yourself up. I really don't want you to get sick."
Kohaku blinked, taking his soft coat that somehow managed to completely dry in her arms. She hugged it close as she looked up at him. "Thank you."
Senku smiled, nodding as he passed through the threshold to the small kitchen. He hummed to himself, muttering in between about electricity being out on the downpour.
It wasn't long before he was brewing himself a cup to ease the cold. Kohaku had stripped to her undergarments like he suggested and snuggled under his coat. She watched the fire dance from the candle in front of her eyes, feeling what little warmth from it and Senku's coat lull her into exhaustion.
She could hear the little clatter of Senku brewing some coffee. She wasn't hungry per se, but a good cup of coffee would be criminal to deny. Kohaku peered in the kitchen, seeing Senku's back to her as she brought his coat to her nose.
She inhaled quickly, coming to enjoy the spicy yet manly cologne she'd come to associate him with. She snuggled closer into the small space on the couch. Senku joined her shortly, hands holding two cups. "Here you are, lioness."
Kohaku smiled, taking the warm cup from him. "Thank you," Kohaku said, blowing the steam off the cup.
Senku nodded, making a move to sit across from her, but he was stopped.
"W-why don't you sit next to me?" Kohaku asked, nervously stirring the little spoon in her cup. "That way you won't catch a cold yourself."
Senku smiled softly. He was getting used to reading the stoic woman. He found her absolutely kind yet beautiful under that persona she had on. Nobody would have believed him if he ever told them how she looked right now–long hair flowing down her back, partially naked and using his coat too big for her size. "You're right," Senku said, keeping the tease out of his voice not wanting to embarrass her. "I'd like that."
The scientist sat beside her, closing the distance between them on the couch as he wrapped his arm around her shoulders. Kohaku's cheeks were blushing red at this point, but she didn't choose to push him away, actually enjoying his extra warmth. He sighed, getting comfortable on the couch as he watched the fire dance in front of them.
They sat in comfortable silence, the sounds of the rain falling against the window was quite relaxing. Though the relaxing atmosphere didn't do much with distracting her thoughts.
Senku wanted to do more than sitting next to Kohaku. Her body pressed up against his did nothing to calm his hormonal thoughts. She looked delicate in his coat, but that didn't stop him from thinking of how much more beautiful she would have looked, moaning under him with her legs wrapped around his waist.
Kohaku's thoughts weren't too far off from his either. His arm was warm around her shoulders. Her hand that rested on her lap itched to travel to his thigh. The smell of him was faint, yet it did so much to intoxicate her. Thinking back how his lips feel against hers. His voice huskier when she'd kiss him…
Her eyes traveled from the fire to his body. He was just in his boxers, leaving his upper body and legs mostly exposed.
Blinking, she turned to get a better look at the only scar running down his torso from his neck. "Senku."
"Mm?" He replied, taking the last sip of his coffee.
"Your scar…" She started, eyes still on the scar across his neck. "How did you get them?"
Senku finished his coffee, placing it on a nearby table before sighing. He knew Kohaku was curious about his scars. The first time they met, he'd made sure to hide it from her by concealing it "If you're a scientist like me, you're bound to get cut up with gears and dangerous chemicals you're conducting one way or another." He ran his fingers through his hair. "They were part of my past, a past where I've learned from them."
Kohaku nodded. "I don't see scars as a negative," she felt the need to explain herself. "Instead, I see them as lessons, too." She reached out and ran her fingertips against the long scar against his neck. He wasn't expecting her touch, jumping when her cold fingers touched the healed skin, but didn't push her away. She frowned. "They must have been painful…"
Senku smiled sadly at her. "They were."
Kohaku stopped her tracing, her hand stopped on his chest and above his heart. She pressed herself closer to him, not knowing why she suddenly felt protective over a man with scar. Though her scars were inner, she didn't know how it feels to see something that would remind you everytime of it. She knew Senku wasn't that strong physically, yet the vulnerability he had in his otherwise smooth voice was reaching for her.
She surprised him when she placed a small kiss on the scar on his neck. Senku resisted the urge to moan, his hand reaching around her waist and pulling her close while the other squeezed her thigh.
But he stopped himself.
"Kohaku," He growled, keeping his own lust in check. "I do hope you know that your wonderful kisses are enticing me."
Kohaku blushed, pushing herself up and kept his gaze. "I just wanted to let you know…that I think your scars made me realize just how strong you truly are."
Though the words were simple, it froze Senku. The hand on her thigh absentmindedly started to stroke her soft skin. The other hand on her back pulled her closer. He stared into her pretty cerulean gaze. "Thank you."
Kohaku nodded, pursing her lips as she pulled back, creating some distance between them. She placed the buckles on his jacket. "I-I'm not trying to insist upon myself. I understand the pain that comes with scars like that."
Senku raised an eyebrow. "Do you?"
Kohaku nodded. She bit her lip as she slowly turned around a bit and pushed up her back hair. On her creamy white skin was a long gash, the pink skin looked as if it just healed completely. Frowning, Senku touch it in his hand. "How'd this happen?"
Kohaku bit her lip, contemplating either to tell him the truth or conceal it. "I was…distracted and I got into a car accident." They said. But she won't say it out loud, 'cause even she didn't know how she got it in the first place. She turned around. "My profession also comes with harmful paparazzies always following me to get a scoop." She averted her eyes. Lies. But it's better he didn't know. She'll be busted.
Sensing the change of mood, Senku tried to lighten it. "I'm glad you're alive."
Kohaku tried to hold back a smile, no one has ever told her that, not even her mother or her father. The moment she wakes up, she's all alone saved for the doctors and nurses who accompanies her. Though a little late, she won't ever forget Senku's kindness.
"You shouldn't be ashamed of them," Senku said after a while.
"I know," she replied as she started to hold Senku's hand. "Although I'm proud of what I've become…I do feel insecure about how rough my hands are."
"There's nothing wrong with that."
She scoffed. "I come from a society where delicateness is all that is valued. My hands aren't as soft as a socialite's hands should be, I don't look like a woman, but…"
"Why should that matter?"
Kohaku blinked, not fully understanding why her brain felt the strong insecurities at the back of her mind. She knew it was foolish to think so, but she was still a woman. "I…" She tried to search for words when the thought of her good friend came to mind. "…I'm not as beautiful as some of the artists or as sexy as them."
"Why are you comparing yourself? You're your own kind of woman," Senku said gently. He could see how unconvinced Kohaku was, avoiding his gaze and looking more interested in his jacket's sleeves than him. Shaking his head and with a gently smile, Senku cleared his throat.
"Give me your hand," Senku said, taking her smaller hand in his and lightly kissed the tips of her fingers. She was surprised with how soft his lips were, the feeling of his lips against her skin caused a surge of fire to spread throughout her body. "This makes you the most talented woman in the world," He pressed a few kisses on her palms then looked up at her. "And it also makes you the most beautiful woman to me, too. More beautiful than those stuck-up models."
"You flatter me," Kohaku said, trying to pull her hand away from him. The walls around her heart were starting to surround her vulnerability. Senku firmly held her hand, only releasing it when she met his eyes.
He finally let go of her hand, choosing to hold her cheek as he caressed her while looking at her. She gasped, seeing his hands were just as scared as his body, if not more. He rested his hand on her lap, allowing her to gently hold it. "I think it's quite silly that people value perfection. What good is it to not have flaws?"
"Some people would think you're insane," Kohaku teased him, still with his hand on her lap.
"Insane, yes." He agreed. "But that makes us interesting, no? In the world of science, sometimes it takes a certain amount of insanity to achieve greatness."
Kohaku only nodded in response as she brought his hand to her lap. She shyly intertwined her fingers into his own and leaned against his shoulder. "Will it be okay for me to take a nap?"
Senku hummed in response, resting his head against hers. "Go ahead…I'll watch the storm pass."
"It sounds like you're going to fall asleep as well," Kohaku hummed as her eyelids started to get heavy.
"Not at all," Senku replied, his chuckle vibrating throughout his chest. "With me around, you don't have to worry about a thing."
It was indeed a vacation, an exhilarating one. However, she couldn't accept the fact that amid her numerous problems, she managed to sleep soundly during that vacation. What is it? Is it Senku's company? Maybe. Scientists concluded it's because of the dopamine. She knows it is, but sometimes, she just thinks it's just an exaggeration.
"Good afternoon, Miss Kohaku," one of her staffs greeted her.
She nodded and smiled a bit. However, her gaze lingered on her as if there was something on her face. She appeared mesmerized, with her lips half-smiling and her eyes dilated. She looked back at her, and she smiled, but there was an obvious question in her eyes.
"Yes?" Kohaku said,
She laughed and blushed before averting her gaze. "Sorry, Miss Kohaku. I find you... uh... pretty today." Kohaku pursed her lips.
"Thanks," she said to the lady employee before she left the elevator.
Apparently, it's not only her who notice the subtle changes in Kohaku. Even her friends most especially Amaryllis notice something as soon as she arrived. Sighing, she just shook her head, no need those to get to her, everything is only temporary.
"The glow is true!" she said and chuckled.
She arrived at the studio just in time for her to review her meetings and maybe compose some songs she had on her mind these past three days. She's not gone for long and there were many speculations she was seen, especially one that she saw this morning with Senku while they're driving home.
Kohaku stumbled upon a paparazzi picture featuring her and Senku biking together. She glanced at the photo and, unable to suppress a smile, decided to bring it up casually with him.
"So, have you seen this picture of us biking? It's from some paparazzi. Is it alright?" she asked, a nonchalant tone in her voice.
Senku looked at the photo and shrugged, responding casually, "Yeah, it's fine. We were just enjoying our time, right?"
"OMG!" Amaryllis opened the door and expected her to overreact just to tease her.
"You should have extended! Everything is fine! We can handle it!" Gen, who smiled, said to her.
"It's alright—"
"Was it disappointing? Is that why you didn't extend?" It was obvious to her that Minami didn't mean that. She just wanted her to talk.
Amaryllis presents a collection of dress options for the upcoming concerts, laying them out for her to choose from. As she scans the array, Amaryllis wears a smug smile, anticipating her reaction and any comments she might make.
Dropping the list of documents for dresses, she turns to face them and says, "My leave is only until today, remember?"
"Oh, please, Kohaku! You're so workaholic! It was time for you to loosen up and take care of yourself!" Gen said enthusiastically.
He sat in front of her as if waiting for something juicy scoop from her to say.
"It was okay, alright? That's all. I have nothing to compare it to, so I don't know..."
"Obviously it was the best. We can see it in your face..." Gen smirked and stood properly.
She looked at the round mirror on the table. She came straight here after their vacation in Hokkaido. She couldn't understand why everyone was saying that. She thought she looked stressed from the travel and seawater but...
They didn't hang around the beach that much, but there was an obvious tan on her fair complexion. Her nose had a shadow that looked like a natural contour and blush. Her face was indeed glowing with the most perfect radiance. Even she didn't achieve that kind of glow through make-up. Her hair, however, looked like it was bombarded and loved well. And her lips were plump and red, even when its natural color is pink.
"You know, these two idiots even had a bet that you'd come back with lots of ideas for your songs," Minami nonchalantly said while looking at her phone and drinking milk tea.
"Well, Kohaku is a grown woman, guess we'll be busy, girls."
Amaryllis looked so excited that she clapped her hand and looked at Kohaku like it was the best idea. While all she did was shake her head in shame and disapproval, the enthusiasm was too difficult to miss. Her lips stretched a bit for a defeated smile.
"You really want my sex life to be this known? It's already enough of you, my friends gossiping about that..."
"Well, of course, you don't have to tell anyone that it was your sex life that inspired it," Minami suggested.
Her jaw dropped in surprise. Gen laughed again.
"Don't tell me you're into their idea, too?" Kohaku said to Minami, while she just nonchalantly ignored her and drank her milk tea.
"I think that's a good marketing strategy for your songs. We all know how conservative you can be, like you know it doesn't have to be literal. Like there are many ways out there to not make it too subtle. You're one of the genius songwriters of our generation. We know you'll figure it out how. The only challenge will be Senku… hmm… anyway we'll help you achieve that look again…" With a mischievous grin, Gen squinted his eyes playfully.
Sighing, Kohaku thought it was ridiculous; they know her too well to decipher even the smallest hints about her personalities she tried so hard to hide. The thought that it came from… this part of her life… made it preposterous. But she doesn't deny they're wrong, because that's what she plans on doing—writing more songs about her life.
"It hasn't been done, and it's sexy as hell!"
"It can be tasteless for some," Kohaku suggested.
"Well, it's kind of avant-garde. If your fans are into great tunes, you've got the fantastic poetry of lyrics!"
She couldn't believe that just because of what happened, her friends were able to come up with ideas. They became engrossed in discussing it. She was just relieved that, although it originated from that topic, they completely shifted away from her personal life and started brainstorming creative marketing strategies for her upcoming songs. The focus was on generating anticipation and support from her listeners.
Her phone rang while she was listening to her friend's suggestions. She sighed when she saw who was calling.
It was her mother.
"Excuse me," she said in between their talking. That's when she fully realizes the vacation's over now… this is her reality, right here.
"Yes," She answered once she's outside; she doesn't want her friends to worry if they realize it's her family again who's calling her.
All at once, it hit her. All the problems she temporarily set aside for pleasure came rushing back. She realized she hadn't resolved them because she chose to forget for a while. She knows these issues aren't easy for her. She wants to make the best decision, and she knows it won't happen overnight. So, she let time pass to think it through. But she suspects her mother was impatient.
"How's your vacation, Kohaku?"
"Mom, I—"
"Anyway, now that you've answered, after avoiding my calls for days. I want you to come and meet me at your stepfather's house. Don't tell anyone that you're coming here. And I want now..." she demanded, like she didn't have anything to do.
"I'm in the middle of my meeting, Mom, can I go there lat-"
But she cuts her off before she could finish, "I have things to do, Kohaku, I want now."
"Okay," Kohaku lets out a defeated sigh.
She knew her mother meant business, and by business, she expected another round of relentless discussions about her marriage to someone she didn't want. It was unlikely that her mother invited her just to have a casual chat or bond, as they never had that kind of relationship. Instead, they would probably end up arguing, and she'd be questioned about her plans after what happened at the hospital.
Grateful that her friends had brought her excuse, claiming she was just tired and needed to rest for the day, she mentally braced herself as she entered her mother's office. Kohaku opened the door and realized she wasn't alone.
Her mother, Mozu and girl she didn't know was sitting with a grim expression. Mozu offered her a seat, but she ignored him and sat on the couch.
"What's up?" She inquired, even though she really didn't want to find out. What is it now? Mozu, a girl I didn't know and my mom in an office? What's new? Nothing. This is just another episode of them hostaging me.
"Kohaku, this is Kanashi. She used to date Senku, and she has something to tell you," Kohaku's mother announced with a knowing look.
The woman looked solemn and teary-eyed, then leaned slightly, as if she wanted to speak but was holding back.
"She's one of our employees back then," Mozu said, "Senku's last apple of the eye."
Her gaze returned to the woman. She was pretty and simple, with blonde hair and blue eyes like hers.
Kanashi stepped forward, a hint of hesitation in her eyes. "Kohaku, I think you should know. Senku cheated on me when we were together."
Raising an eyebrow in skepticism, Kohaku questioned, "Really?" What is this? Some kind of evaluation? It's like they brought someone here who can testify about what kind of person Senku is, huh?
Kanashi continued, "I have proof, messages, and everything. He's not as loyal as you think."
"Like I said, daughter, Senku Ishigami is a known playboy. Not just him. His friends too. Even Luna one of his friends is a playgirl herself." her mother gently said.
Kohaku, still unconvinced, couldn't talk. Unable to believe that they went through this effort... for what? To character assassinate Senku? And they interrupted her in the middle of her meeting because she needs to be there to protect his reputation? Why should she be concerned when her mother is clearly capitalizing on rumors about him being a playboy? She doesn't care less about all of that. She's confuse. Should she be worried?
Her mother chimed in, "Kohaku, don't be naive. I've seen this before. You need to know the truth about Senku."
"He's not as innocent as he appears, Kohaku. Senku denied me credit for a report we worked on together. Instead, he took all the glory for himself," Kanashi asserted, her tone edged with frustration.
Kohaku, still hesitant to believe the accusations, can't help it but replied, "People can have disagreements at work. That doesn't necessarily mean he's a cheater."
Kanashi persisted, her words gaining intensity, "It's not just that. He used his charm to flirt with higher-ups and manipulate his way into more opportunities. He craves money and fame, and he'll do anything to get it."
Kohaku's eyes narrowed. She couldn't care less about Senku's reputation.
"Before you, it was me he's after, "Kanashi said.
She glanced her way. She really didn't care about his past flings. She knew and understood the reputation of men like him, so...
"I thought he's serious about me..." she sniffled, even though it was clear to her that there were no visible tears in her eyes. "I'm sure of it. He even painted my portrait."
He.. what?
Kohaku raised an eyebrow. Maybe the look on her face gave her away—the cluelessness, the shock—it registered on the girl who's telling her a narrative.
She contemplated the possibility that what Kanashi was saying could be true, but it could also be false. Perhaps someone, like her mother or Mozu, had paid Kanashi just to tarnish Senku's image in her eyes. Although Senku's reputation was already tainted, so what was the purpose? Did her mother even need a live testimonial to manipulate her against Senku? The idea seemed utterly ridiculous to her.
"Oh, you didn't know?" She smirked, "Of course you didn't know that he painted." She can't help but clench her fist, is this woman trying to rile her up?
"He painted my portrait. I was head over heels, especially because of that. But he left me after that. He led me on. So, he's just leading you on as well."
Kohaku knew her words held little weight against her. She knew her relationship with Senku were built on a pretense. But the girl made her realize —there were still so many things she didn't know about him. They hadn't talked much about their personal lives.
"Kohaku, it's not just a simple disagreement. Senku deliberately downplayed my role in that report. He told others that it was all his idea, and I was just there to assist. He's cunning and knows how to manipulate situations to his advantage," Kanashi explained, her expression earnest.
Kohaku listened intently, a sense of unease settling in. "But why would he do that?"
"Because he wants to be in the spotlight, Kohaku. He's hungry for recognition and will undermine anyone to get it," Kanashi continued, her voice tinged with bitterness.
"He even used our personal relationship as leverage. He flirted with influential people, creating an illusion that he's the charming genius everyone wants to be associated with," Kanashi added, trying to paint a vivid picture of Senku's alleged manipulations.
Kohaku, caught in a web of conflicting emotions, struggled to reconcile the image Kanashi was presenting with the Senku she knew. Nevertheless, a seed of doubt starts to creep in until she's interrupted.
"It's because he found out that Kanashi works for Mozu, Kohaku. That's why he left. Him and his friends are obsessed with looking behind their backs because of imaginary threats. Rumors has it Ryusui has connections to some shady business deals. And Luna doesn't just use her charm for innocent purposes; she's not as innocent as she looks, and Tsukasa... well, Tsukasa and Senku has a dark past that he hasn't shared with you." Her mother said.
Kohaku narrowed her eyes. She had heard snippets of such rumors before, but in the midst of her busy life, she never bothered to make sense of them. She also didn't care much about the lives of socialites. She locked eyes with Kanashi, shifted her weight, as she continued,
"I have friends in the industry who have seen this pattern before. They warned me, and now I'm warning you. Don't let him take advantage of you. I hate to say this, but you need to know the truth. Senku is just using you for fame. He's using your popularity to boost his own image. Once he gets what he wants, he'll move on to the next opportunity," Kanashi insisted,
"Kohaku, I know you're confused right now but I verified this," Mozu added.
"He doesn't love you, Kohaku. He's just using you to get back at me. Senku probably thinks right now we are spying on them. I know maybe you find this ridiculous," Mozu sounded gently with a hand on his chest, "But personally, I think it's only right to tell you because I don't want you to be deceived."
Kohaku's expression remained impassive, a steely resolve masking any emotional response. Mozu's words hung in the air, yet Kohaku seemed determined not to be drawn into another round of arguments. The room fell into an uncomfortable silence as her impassive expression left them uncertain about how to proceed.
Ever since then, she remained steadfast in her convictions. She was well aware of her actions with Senku, and she understood that the others were only resorting to such tactics to steer her towards choosing Mozu. If Senku believed she was a spy, attempting to win her over, then so be it. Kohaku recognized that she was with him for the pleasurable benefits he could offer, and that was the extent of it.
She knew Senku would eventually realize she had nothing substantial to offer. She had no illusions about what their connection meant, and Kohaku accepted that he would likely leave her in the end. Strangely enough, this outcome was convenient for her, aligning with her own desires. Kohaku had no intentions of forming a lasting attachment, and she was prepared for the eventual parting of ways.
Kohaku's mother chimed in, "Kohaku, you deserve someone who values you for who you are, not for what you can offer him."
"Okay. Thanks for informing me," Kohaku said, rising from her seat, eager to leave as soon as possible. The smirk on her mother's face disappeared.
"Is that all?" Kohaku inquired, hand on the door handle.
"What do you mean 'Is that all'? You are being used by that man, Kohaku!"
"Used? If he thinks I am a spy, then he will get nothing from me. Because it's not true—"
"He will hurt you because you have a connection to Mozu, Kohaku! What the hell is wrong with you?!"
Her mother's escalating tone began to irritate her, but Kohaku made a conscious effort to stay calm and depart in peace.
"That's my problem, Mom."
As if she cared if she'll get hurt or not. She chose to trace her steps outside of her mother's study, even though she can sense her anger brewing mere inches away.
"You really want this the hard way, huh?" Her mother's words echoed in her ears as she got out. "Do you really want your father to insist on this?"
Kohaku could only cast a weak glance back at her mother. Truth is, she was merely playing along to amuse her mother and keep her father out of harm's way. Kohaku knew she couldn't separate her father from her mother; the best she could do was follow along to ensure his safety and well-being. It was the only agreeable and peaceful solution she could think of.
That also means, that despite her fight for freedom and independence… she knows she has nowhere to go.
She had the rest of her life… to be miserable with Mozu.
That's why she'll give it her all for a chance to be happy for once… with a man of her choosing. As she walked back to her car, the unsettling thought of Senku potentially discarding her crossed her mind. That's why, she resolved, she needed to make the most of the opportunity while it lasted.
Sighing, once inside her car, Kohaku worked to push aside the thoughts of what had transpired back at her mother's study. She scrolled through her contacts until she found the one number she knew by heart.
"Hello," his voice echoed through the phone, a comforting melody that momentarily erased all her worries.
With just that, he touches a part of her she didn't know existed. Maybe she needed to see him, so she can look back at something in the future. A memory she could use and remember when her life was falling apart.
"I miss you," she said trying so hard to silence her sniffling, "Can we please meet?"
