(Watching Power Rangers Samurai) Okay, this season was definitely pretty decent for its time, despite being a complete ripoff of its original source material… sans some episodes and monsters. Though I will admit, Johnathan Tzachor, the writer behind half of the Power Rangers franchise, really knew what he was doing when adapting this season, so I can't really blame him for wanting to stick to the original as much as possible. I mean, he made a whole fictional city inside Japan that looks like it could fit in modern day Japan. How cool is that? Too bad they brought Bates in soon after and just before Nickelodeon had to premiere the season, but eh. Small licks to take for a season that wasn't so bad.
But what if it was different somehow in both versions? What if a Ranger/Senshi was over a couple hundred years old due to a curse, was former friends with the half Nighlok and his bride, and yet this warrior was still able to kick other Nighlok butts? (Jeopardy music plays momentarily as I think) You know what? I'm gonna roll with that idea and make it my own with my Samurai OC, Rebekah Inukai, or as she'd be known in Shinkenger, Asuna Tsukiogami. And yes, I'm aware of the changes I made, but let's face it: It is not easy being a fanfic writer. So, here we go. (Pulls in the Disclaimers)
Disclaimer: I don't own Power Rangers, as it is a product of Hasbro as of May 1, 2018.
(No POV)
A normal day was passing by in the bustling Panorama City, and as far as anyone was concerned, that was the long and the short of it. Adults heading to and from places, kids having fun and enjoying their young years. It didn't seem like anything could be wrong, but nobody knew what lies beneath the surface of the various cracks lining the city.
A red glow appeared from a crack one child was peeking into before several monsters called Moogers emerged and started to scare the people in the vicinity.
But what the Moogers couldn't have known at the time was that a young woman was walking by, her clothing reminiscent of ancient feudal times and her dark hair reaching to her shoulders, her eyes narrowing as she saw the minions attacking the humans. "So they're finally back, huh? Took them long enough." She drew a katana blade that changed into a stylized sword with a black disc on the hilt before she rushed forward and started to slash her way through the mooks, showing off skills that no mortal man could even dream of.
Pulling out a dark purple disc from her kimono, she flipped it in the air and pushed her hilt through the hole before spinning the disc on her blade, the silver connector showing the Japanese kanji for "Moon (月)" spinning around as the woman shouted, "Spin Sword: Lunar Blackout!" She swung her blade and delivered a powerful attack filled with dark purple energy and bright lasers that looked like lasers, striking the remaining Moogers and destroying them in an instant.
She let her sword disappear before she turned to a child who looked amazed by her actions, kneeling down and picking up the owl plushie that had landed by her feet before brushing it off and handing it back to the little girl with a gentle smile. "Here you go. You don't want to lose that."
The girl nodded to her. "Thank you, miss." She headed back to her worried mother.
Rebekah watched as she watched the child go to her parents and sighed softly, continuing her journey through the city. As she walked, she couldn't help but reflect on her past, cursed by Xandred as a result of her childlike stupidity as an eight year old, hiding the secret from her family, her Nighlok side manifesting at the age of 18 and making her technically immortal, her father dying in the fires that consumed her family's dojo, and the responsibility of her fighting her own inner darkness for almost 250 years now. It was almost ironic and yet poetic how her symbol power was from the moon and she was fighting darkness with an element that was supposed to help her control the darkness. Sputtering slightly, she muttered to herself in Japanese before she walked onward.
As she passed by a storefront, she took note of how other people were perceiving her, some of them were adults who were confused and suspicious about her, others were kids who were amazed and intrigued by her clothing. She paid the adults no mind, and gave the kids a kind smile as she walked.
Two people in particular (a familiar face to some longtime Power Rangers fans and a newer face) passed by Bekah before they turned around in surprise to see her.
Spike looked at Bulk in surprise. "Do you think…?"
Bulk shook his head slightly. "Nah, she couldn't be." He frowned slightly. "Or could she?" Deciding to use his years of junior policeman and Ranger hunting experience, he pulled Spike along as they discreetly followed Bekah, tailing her until she headed into an alley and once they rounded the corner, they found that she had disappeared from sight.
"Where'd she go?" Spike looked around in confusion.
Bulk smiled slightly. "Oh, she is definitely good. But I'm not gonna rest until we can get her to train us in her samurai ways!" He suddenly tripped and fell into a pile of garbage bags, catching Spike's attention as the young man laughed in amusement with some snorts.
Outside the alley near a bridge, Bekah peeked out from her hiding place in a crack and got out before she dashed down the street, smiling slightly. "Okay, maybe being half Nighlok does have its advantages." Straightening herself up, she heard a swoosh and looked around curiously, spotting a purple tipped arrow and catching it from midair, reading the attached note and smiling a bit. "Seems the new head of the Shiba clan has finally found me." She headed off down the street towards the meeting area.
(Bekah's POV)
As I made my way towards the street corner that the Red Ranger had asked me to come to, I jumped when I heard an explosion. "They're already attacking?!" I quickly hurried over and noticed the rest of the team was already there: An African American boy in a blue swim team jacket, a blonde girl in a yellow shirt, a Hispanic looking boy in a green jacket, and a fellow Asian American girl in pink.
The blonde, whom I'd later learn was named Emily, walked up to me. "You're not the Red Ranger, right?"
The Hispanic, Mike, chuckled and looked at the blonde. "No way. I think she's more of a Violet Ranger."
I nodded to him with a smile. "I am. And I suppose you two are Green and Yellow, and the other two are Blue and Pink." As I spoke to them, I pointed to each member in turn.
The Asian girl, Mia, nodded to me. "So if you're not the Red Ranger, then who is?"
I smirked a bit. "That would be the current head of the Shiba clan. I've known their family for quite some time." As I spoke, I heard hooves galloping behind me and looked around. "Speaking of which..."
Our fearless leader came into view and when I saw him, my breath caught in my throat slightly: He looked almost identical to the head of the Shiba clan from my era and it was no wonder why I was starting to gain a blush on my face; I had previously had a romance with the twelfth generation Red Ranger, and those feelings were starting to rise up again for this new generation Red.
Mike spoke up as he looked at the new leader. "With an entrance like that, you'd have to be the Red Ranger."
Thanks to Mike's distraction, I caught myself and cleared my throat, kneeling before the newest Red Ranger. "Lord Shiba, it is an honor to be serving under your command."
The young man on his horse looked at me and smiled. "I'm honored to have you on the team."
I looked up and nodded calmly before standing upright. "Then I am ready to assist you in any way I can." I returned to the others standing next to Mike and Kevin.
"Let me warn the rest of you now: Once you accept, there is no turning back. Either we defeat the Nighlok together or they'll take over the world. I will give these to only those who accept the challenge." Jayden showed the others a strange looking phone (which to me was kind of odd since I was unused to modren technology still) before he dismounted from his horse and continued on, "Do not accept because you were trained to do so. Only if you are willing to commit and fight as Samurai Power Rangers with all your heart."
I pulled my symbol brush from my sleeve and nodded confidently. "Absolutely."
Kevin nodded in agreement. "Without hesitation."
Mia stepped forward. "I've been planning for this since I was a little girl, so yes!"
Emily smiled eagerly. "I'm ready to give it all I've got!"
"Okay, okay. Do we have to be so formal?" Mike spoke to the rest of us before he nodded to Jayden. "Let's do this thing!"
In turn, Jayden opened his sachel and pulled out four more of the odd phones, tossing them to the others, who caught them easily.
Kevin looked at me curiously. "Why didn't you get one?"
I smirked slightly and twirled my brush. "I'm more used to the classic brush."
Emily smiled a bit as she looked at me. "Wow, so you're kinda like the Red Ranger!"
I nodded a bit. "Something to that effect." I looked to Jayden as he subtly nodded to me; it must've been obvious that he knew of my secret and was going to keep it under wraps for me.
"Let's go!" Jayden then told us as we quickly followed him to the site of the Nighlok attack.
(No POV)
As the people ran away from the Moogers that were attacking, the group leader known as Tooya chuckled slightly as he watched a man roll towards him. "Come on down!" He raised his blade to strike the man when suddenly...
"That's enough!" Jayden shouted from above, catching Tooya's attention as the six heroes walked forward and stood together in a line, all of them (again, sans Bekah who was still wearing her kimono) in black outfits now, the Violet Ranger easily sticking out against the rest of them.
"Well, it's about time." Tooya spoke as he saw Bekah before looking at the others. "So who are these punks with you?"
"The Samurai Rangers, and your demise!" Bekah spoke calmly, holding her brush up.
Jayden flipped open his Samuraizer, the others following his lead, and then together with Bekah, they shouted their morphing phrase: "Go Go Samurai!" Holding out their Morphers, they drew their respective element symbols and flipped them, morphing into their suits in the blink of an eye to the Nighloks (to us, the audience, we see a morph sequence where the group of Samurais - plus Bekah in a training outfit like the others but lined in violet - morphing into their respective suits, their Spin Swords flying over and the heroes catching their blades, the kanjis forming their stylized helmets, and the team taking black discs from their belts and locking them on to their swords before taking various poses and saying as a team, "Samurai Ranger, ready!") before they spun their blades around and slashed down, striking poses and all while chanting, "Rangers together, Samurai forever!"
"Moogers, get them!" Tooya shouted, prompting the minions to charge forward.
"Charge!!" Bekah shouted bravely, the Rangers following her lead and rushing at the oncoming enemies as they started to combat the Moogers bravely.
As they fought, the team couldn't help but make quips, and Jayden challenged the Moogers, "Is this the best you can do?!"
Bekah noticed archer Moogers coming. "Uh-oh! Heads up!" She kicked up a garbage can and launched it around the vicinity, protecting the others from getting pierced.
The team regrouped as Mia spoke, "There's dozens of them! We knock them down, but they keep coming!"
Bekah nodded to her. "Then it's time to up the ante." She looked at Jayden. "Let's show 'em how it's done!"
He nodded to her. "You read my mind!" The two stepped forward and spun their Samurai Discs, Jayden's Spin Sword transforming into a massive sword while Bekah's Spin Sword became a large hammer. "Fire Smasher!/Lunar Hammer!" They pulled out their coordinated animal discs and locked them in place on their weapons before swinging their weapons around to knock the Moogers back (while also making the others duck in the process), both of them rushing back into the fray.
"Hope these fish sticks like baseball! Cause I'm slamming some home runs!" She shouted, swinging her hammer around and knocking Moogers into the sky as Jayden followed suit.
As they fought, the others joined in on the fight and summoned their own weapons: A laser bow, a handheld fan, a spear, and a three bladed slicer boomerang.
Jayden and Bekah rushed Tooya together, both of them using their weapons as shields before ramming into him, the Red Ranger slashing the Nighlok into the air and making him land behind a car before the Violet Ranger rushed over and smashed her hammer into his gut. "Time to take you for a ride!" She pushed forward and shoved Tooya against a pillar before she swung her hammer with a shout and smashed through it while destroying the monster in the process.
Her weapon transformed back as Jayden caught up to her and patted her shoulder. "Excellent teamwork between the two of us."
She nodded and smiled a bit, her blush coming back to her. "Indeed."
They saw the others regrouping after having dealt with the Moogers as Mike cheered. "That was one heck of a rush!"
"No doubt! I think Bekah and Jayden were the best!" Emily agreed.
Mike nodded in agreement. "Totally a power couple in my book!"
Mia nodded, placing her hand on her hip. "Yeah, we all did great."
Kevin ran over and knelt down to the two experienced samurais. "Great samurai moves! You really are master samurais!"
Bekah nodded to Kevin as she and Jayden walked over. "Thank you, Blue, but it's not over yet."
Jayden explained, "Each Nighlok has two forms. You've seen the first, now get ready for the mega monster."
On cue, Tooya grew to thirty stories tall as he said, "Fee fi fo fum, time to crush some Ranger bums!"
The six heroes ran to the side to avoid getting squashed and Mike spoke, "Whoa! Look at the size of that guy!"
"How are we supposed to fight that?" Mia spoke in concern.
"Guys, we can do it together," Kevin reassured them and explained, "We have our Folding Zords. We can mega size them and go into Mega Mode."
"You're absolutely right." Jayden agreed before retaking command. "Follow my lead!"
With a few strokes of symbol power, the heroes enlarged their Zords (for our Violet Ranger, an owl) and jumped inside the cockpits before locking in their Mega Blades, gaining their Mega Mode forms in the process before the six Zords charged forward, evading Tooya's blasts as Jayden went to attack first, but he got attacked.
"Blue, take the Nighlok from the left! Yellow, the right!" Bekah commanded.
"Roger that!/You got it!" The respective Rangers responded, following her commands quickly and helping Jayden out of trouble, and as Mia was caught, Mike came to her rescue and smashed Tooya's foot before the two rolled back.
"My turn! Heads up!" Kevin smashed his Zord into Tooya before pulling back to animal mode and shooting blue flames at the Nighlok.
Jayden activated his Mega Blade and sent his Lion Zord forward in the Pentagonal Fury attack, causing the Nighlok to fall and explode as the Lion Zord roared triumphantly.
Bekah smiled confidently as she spoke for Jayden, "Samurai Rangers, victory is ours. That'll teach him to mess with us."
(Bekah's POV)
"What a rush. We did good," Emily smiled as she held her Zord; the six of us had demorphed out of sight and gone to the Shiba house, and once we had gotten there, Jayden had slipped me a small necklace with a symbol power charged entry kanji (入る) on a Torii gate charm, to be as inconspicuous to the team as possible while also ensuring that my curse wasn't affected.
"Piece of cake," Mike agreed with her.
"We could have never done this without each other," Jayden reminded us all.
"Thank you for leading us into battle," Kevin smiled at Jayden and myself, "both of you."
"Bravo," an older man stepped out of the building and made us look around to him as he walked over to us and continued, "Such energy. Such grace."
"Who is that?" Mike asked curiously, and to be honest, I couldn't answer him this time.
But thankfully, Jayden could as he spoke, "This is Ji, our mentor."
Ji paused a few feet away from us and spoke, "Welcome to your new home. You all come from different places and families, but share one noble goal. I'm very proud of how you've come together."
Jayden smiled and responded, "We just followed some good advice and worked as a team."
"Yes, but you are not just any team," Ji told us. "You are the Samurai Rangers."
Those words cemented our looks of confidence as we raised our Zords and chanted in unison, "Rangers together, Samurai forever!"
Whew, what a rush of a starter! Now, I've had this story among many others in mind for a while, but it took me quite some time to figure everything out. I had to figure out my OC's backstory, how that was gonna work, her place on the team, her relationships with the others, all of that, and yeesh. Lemme tell you, between the crazies of the work scheduling and other garbage I've had to deal with plus some family trauma, unpredictable weather tying into my mood, and writing for other stores, my brain's about to hit a gas leak! Oi... Ah well. That's the price of workaholicism, I guess. Anyway, read and review, guys! Hopefully, I'll have Episode 2 ready soon.
