The Black Guild was one of the most infamous assassin's guilds in the world. This was a known fact by everyone. They had a reputation for taking on the hardest jobs and always succeeding. But as the years went by the younger generations of the family started to get sloppy. They were making mistakes that even a newbie wouldn't make. They still took on the most dangerous assignments and still got the job done but people were starting to talk.
"In a public place, Bellatrix!" yelled the harpy-like voice of Mrs. Black. "Were you could have very easily been seen. It's bad enough that your cousin Sirius and your sister Andromeda have left the guild now you go and do this."
"I got my assignment done, didn't I?" Bellatrix asked nonchalantly, sitting down in her favorite chair by the fireplace. The deep purple of the fabric almost blended perfectly with the black of her outfit of choice for the day.
"But at what cost, Bella?" Narcissa heard herself asking before she could stop the question from leaving her lips.
Both Bellatrix and their mother turned to face the petite blonde girl. Bellatrix looked amused that her sister was questioning her but their mother on the other hand looked angrier than she had been before.
"I don't need the help of someone who can't stand the sight of blood," the older woman snapped shaking her head. "The two of you are truly disappointing. Why can't you be like your younger cousin Regulus? He doesn't have a problem doing as he is told."
Bellatrix snorted and Narcissa gave her a look that told her to hold her tongue. After all, almost everyone knew that most of Regulus's takedowns were actually Bellatrix's.
"We have been tasked with the heavy burden of assassinating a noble assassin's guild," The girl's mother told them. "You remember the Malfoy guild?"
Narcissa nodded. The heir of the guild had helped her out with an assignment years ago. She had found working with Lucius was rather nice. Even though he didn't respect her ideas enough to try them.
"Their upstart son Lucius has been speaking ill of this family and our reputation as primer assassins. Your father, Aunt Walburga, and I won't stand for this and if your uncle were still alive he'd agree with us."
"What are you saying?" Narcissa asked, feeling a thrill of terror sprial through her stomach.
"I'm saying that your father and I have agreed to have you marry young Lucius Malfoy and on your wedding night you will become a widow."
"Perhaps we can ask for the Malfoys' side of the story?" Narcissa asked, not wanting to have to harm Lucius.
"Oh, Narcissa, don't be ridiculous," Bellatrix said, putting a hand on her sister's arm gently. "Do you really think that an assassin would honestly tell you the truth?"
"I would," she stated, looking between her mother and sister.
"Your naivete truly alarms me, dear," her mother said, shaking her head. "The world is not full of honest people. The sooner you learn that the better."
That had been five weeks ago though. Narcissa had not been given the chance to say no to the assignment. She was told she was performing the task with no ifs ands or buts. But looking at Lucius's smiling happy face she knew she couldn't go through with the plan her mother had made for her.
"You seem nervous," Lucius said, wrapping his arms around his young wife with all the love in the world. Would he still love her if he knew what her family wanted her to do to him?
"I'm—" She couldn't go through with it. She put her head in her hands as she sat down at the bottom of the bed.
"What's wrong?"
"My guild and family have sent me to kill you," she said, looking at her feet and waiting for his reply. She was hoping if he was going to kill her it would be quick and painless. Not that her mother had wanted to give him the same respect.
Lucius seemed to be deep in thought when Narcissa chanced a glance at him. She was hoping he wasn't planning something awful for her. She didn't think she could handle that. But then he finally spoke and what he said surprised her more than anything.
"How shall we do it then?" he asked, smirking.
"What?" Narcissa asked, surprise filling her voice.
"Obviously I am not endorsing killing me," Lucius answered. "But I do think that I have an idea that could work—"
"What are you saying?"
"I'm saying that we make it look like I am dead and that you have done your job," Lucius said, looking out the window of the room. "Then we will have the freedom to do as we wish."
"We'd both have to die for that to be true," Narcissa pointed out.
"Perhaps yours is not the only guild family that is trying to assassinate my own? Perhaps one of the others made an attempt on my life and you were taken out as well. Collateral damage and all that."
Narcissa stopped and thought about this for moment. She knew her family. They would stop at nothing to avenge her death but on the same hand, she couldn't hurt Lucius either. It was then that wicked evil plan entered her head. One that she went into depth explaining it to Lucius. A plan of revenge. Not only for herself and Lucius but for Andromeda and her family, and her favorite cousin Sirius too.
"But for the time being we will lie in wait," she said, smiling and looking out the window to a brave new future for her and Lucius and possibly their children.
I hope you all enjoyed A Plan Most Foul and Wonderful as much as I enjoyed writing it.
