The Cunning God of Death Rises

The Birth of a God

In a secret research facility near the planet Zebes, many years before the attack on K-2L...

In the dead of night, a scientist rapidly tapped away on her data pad as she carefully observed the large purple egg in the incubator, listening carefully for any sound of the Federation Marines that regularly patrolled the labs. If she was discovered to be in possession of this egg, it would mean receiving a dire punishment from the Council.

The scientist was a slim, middle-aged woman wearing a dark grey t-shirt, black trousers and black, flat shoes. Her grey and brown hair was always tied into a tight bun and her red, horn-rimmed glasses lightly reflected the screen of her data pad in the dimly-lit laboratory.

She had a family, a husband and two children, but they were lightyears away and, with the secrecy of the facility's research, she had not been allowed to even send them a written message. That was why this egg was the most precious thing to her right now. She was planning to change the entire cosmos with the tiny baby inside of it.

This special baby was the last known surviving member of the Space Dragons, a ferocious species that the Federation had deemed too dangerous to be allowed continued exsistance and so had their army travel to Zebes, where they had eradicated almost the entirity of the highly intelligent beings. She did not know if there were any other survivors. All she had found was this one egg.

The scientist had discovered it in an underground cave when she and several others had been sent to the facility to investigate whether or not the planet had enough natural resources left for the potential construction of a new colony. She would never forget the terrible sight. A destroyed nest, several other eggs smashed to pieces and the mother laying dead on the ground, still as the cave stones that surrounded her. The egg that the scientist had found had been safely hidden beneath it's mother's arms and wings.

Deciding to hatch and raise the baby herself, the scientist hoped that, if she raised it right, the Federation might change their perspective about Space Dragons being natural-born killers. They could then allow this dragon to live and it was a possibility that they would make peace with any other reminants of the species. By some miracle, she had managed to smuggle the egg onboard the facility without anyone becoming suspicious, place it into the incubator and put her plan into action.

That was weeks ago and the egg still showed no sign of hatching. Come on, little one, just hatch already, she thought impatiently as she recorded the latest data on the incubator's monitor. So far everything was going well. The temperature of the incubator was within normal range and the hatchling inside was alive and well. The egg could hatch any day now.

Yawning slightly, the scientist checked the time. It was almost midnight. Deciding that there was nothing more she could do tonight, the scientist left the small laboratory and locked it with the secret code she had created when she had first started her little project.

It was not until she returned the next morning that the scientist discovered that the egg had hatched, the newborn white, downy baby laying on the floor of the incubator. After leaving it for a few minutes to recover from it's birth, the scientist reached into the incubator and retrieved the hatchling to examine it.

"Hello, little baby. Welcome to the galaxy." she said to the hatchling kindly, taking the baby over to a nearby table to check the it's health. She first recorded it's height and weight, finding the baby to be much bigger and heavier than the hatchlings she had unfortunately found during her exploration of Zebes.

"Not bad." she said quietly to herself as she got a small syringe and drew a tiny amount of blood from the creature, earning a tiny screech of complaint from the newborn, it's blood-red eyes glaring angrily at her.

"Sorry, little one, sorry. I just need to find out more about you." she whispered apologetically as she ran the blood through some equipment. The results quickly gave her more than enough information about the baby Space Dragon. Nothing abnormal; no ill effects from the attack on it's nest or genetic mutations and it was a male.

"So, you're a little boy, huh?" she said, thinking carefully about what to call the creature. He had a research designation, of course, but the scientist felt that Geoform 187 made the hatchling seem like less of a member of a highly intelligent race and more like a prototype robot.

After much careful thought, she finally thought of something. "Hey, little guy, what would you say if I called you Ridley?" she asked as she placed the hatchling into a small plant-filled enclosure she had prepared for him weeks ago, closing the door once the baby Space Dragon was settled.

The hatchling's bat-like ears pricked up upon hearing the name and, after a brief struggle, he got up on his two violet, bird-like legs and ran up to the door of the enclosure, giving a much happier screech as if he was approving of the name.

Smiling, the scientist said "Well then, Ridley it is. Now, let's get you your first meal. I hope you don't mind leftovers. I'm afraid it's all I can get you under the circumstances." Retrieving a small container from her bag, the scientist gingerly placed her meagre offering in front of Ridley, hoping that the baby would be willing to eat it or if he would be able to eat it at all.

Thankfully, the hatchling, while hesitant at first, happily tucked into the leftovers and, within a few minutes, the makeshift meal had been wolfed down, leaving only a few tiny crumbs. "Wow, you definitely aren't fussy, are you?" the scientist said in amazement as she retrieved the container and put it back into her bag.

Looking at her watch, she quickly realised that it was almost time for her first shift to start. If she was late at all, she greatly risked ruining her plan. "I've got to go to work now, okay, Ridley. While I'm gone, just stay in your enclosure and be really quiet. I can't risk you being found just yet. Can you stay hidden and quiet for me?" she asked the hatchling hopefully.

Ridley just gave a small tired screech as he hoped into the cave-like nest-box at the back of the enclosure and fell into a deep sleep. "Thanks, little guy. You don't know it yet but you're going to change the galaxy. I'll see you later." the scientist said as she left, locking the door to the room before leaving to start work.

Aww, wasn't Ridley cute back then? So what's next for the baby Space Dragon?

As stated above, I do not own Ridley or Zebes. I only the scientist who hatched him and the research facility where he was born.

I hope you have enjoyed this first chapter and to have the next chapters of this story and my other story posted as soon as possible.
