Prologue
The city looked small from her perch on the roof of a particularly high building. Not only could she see the individuals below, but she could detect the auras unique to each and every one of them. Her senses carried much farther than they did back when she first started training them. She could feel things miles out of her line of sight now.
A gust of wind kicked up, her tucked wings stretching out a bit as the breeze ruffled the stark-white feathers. A familiar aura burned her senses, much closer than the rest, and she closed her eyes with a faint sigh.
"You sure took your time in finding me," she said as she spun on her heel. Her wings stretched out further as she held her arms out at her side. She opened her eyes, bright blue pools catching the gleam of the mid-afternoon sun.
"Keh," Inuyasha scoffed, closing the distance as he came to join her at the building's ledge. "If you knew I was tracking you, why didn't you just come?"
Kagome's smile widened as she cocked her head to the side. "But it's such a nice day, don't you think?" she asked her half-demon best friend. "How could I not want to take a couple of minutes to really take in the skyline?"
He scoffed, but he didn't argue against her. Instead, he swapped his attention from her and out to the open space she'd been savoring seconds ago. A second later, he looked back at her with an arched brow. "That villain just got knocked face-first into a brick wall," he remarked in a flat tone.
"I never said it was a nice day for everyone," she responded with a hum. As she said that, she glanced down at the scene below. Even from a distance, her keen vision caught all the little details. She was about to look away when the gleam of a red feather snagged her attention. She froze, and her wings fluttered as her pulse quickened.
Seconds later, a familiar figure caught her eye. For a moment, the world around fell away on all sides as a memory she kept close to her heart flared to life in her mind.
The shifting of white feathers captured her attention. A moment passed as she came to a pause, the feathers of her wings ruffling a bit more. At the same time, a foreboding feeling sank into her chest- a feeling she didn't like one bit.
The sky was gloomy that afternoon, and a small drizzle had picked up as she made her way home. Nothing that warranted an umbrella when the hood of her jacket sufficed just fine. Faintly, she wondered if the water catching on the feathers was causing the feeling.
"Watch out!"
The sound of screeching tires pulled her from her thoughts, shrieks erupting from passersby as her gaze landed on the distinct shape of a large vehicle hurdling towards her. The thought to move hammered through her mind, but, when she tired, she couldn't do anything. She was frozen like a deer, her bright blue eyes blinded by the bright lights speeding directly for her.
Her school bag dropped from her grip as she did the only thing she could think to do with her legs frozen in place. She lifted her arms to block the visual of the vehicle speeding towards her, as if it'd do anything to defend against the impending collision. She squeezed her eyes shut, body tensing up as she waited for the impact.
She prayed the pain would fade swiftly, or that she wouldn't feel it for long.
She waited and kept waiting, only it never came. Instead, a pair of arms swept her up swiftly but gently. She remained frozen for a few more seconds before she finally mustered the courage to move her arms from where they covered her face. As she did, she let her eyes open as well.
The first thing she did was glance down, and her eyes went wide when she realized she was far off the ground below. The vehicle had rammed into the lamp post she'd been directly in front of. The driver clambered out, but, before they could get too far, red feathers shot towards them and pinned them to the ground.
Her hands automatically sought for something to grasp at as the height settled in her mind. Her fingers soon burrowed into the sleek, tan material of her savior's coat.
"Woah there, little bird," a calm voice stole her attention. She slowly swapped her focus from the ground and up to the face of the man holding her to his chest. Blue met golden-brown that was behind a transparent golden visor. Once he saw he had her attention, he flashed her a gleaming grin. "You okay?"
The prior events flashed rapidly through her mind at the question as she thought his question over. No words could form, however. Her gaze had shifted from his eyes to the vibrant crimson wings fluttering ever-so-slightly to keep them both afloat. Wordlessly, she nodded. He caught her line of sight easily. He glanced at his wings from the corner of his eye, stretching them a bit. As he did, he didn't miss the gleam in her eyes.
"Hm? Cat got your tongue?" he chuckled when she said nothing. The remark brought a flush of pink to her cheeks.
"N-No!" she squeaked out. Her heart was hammering loudly in her chest. A part of her worried that it was loud enough for him to hear, and she attempted to ignore it. 'I-I…-" she trailed off, no words capable of forming. Still, he grinned at her.
"There's a reaction!" he chirped.
The noise below, the clamor of the gathered crowd, had been tuned out by her long ago. As he lowered them back down, it steadily returned to focus. Once close enough, he carefully set her back on her feet, offering his arm for her to cling to until he was sure she was stable. Once she let him go, he lifted a hand to gently pat the top of her head, ruffling her hair some.
"You gotta move when something like that is coming for you," he stated. She looked up at him upon hearing his voice. "I was patrolling and just happened to be in the right place at the right time, but things might not be so lucky the next time 'round, you know," he added. "You got those wings, so use 'em."
Her face flushed a deeper shade when he commented on the white wings she had tucked back to hide behind her. He noticed, a curious hum snagging in his throat. "I…" she paused and toyed with the cuff on her sleeve to avoid looking up as he watched her. "-... don't know how…" she finished, blue eyes pointed at the ground between their feet.
"Huh?" He responded. "For real?"
She nodded, face stained crimson. "I… don't like heights…" A few seconds dragged by before she felt his hand fall to land on the top of her head again, gently ruffling her hair. A second later, he crouched some so he was on her level.
Thinking back to her reaction a few moments ago, he'd figured as much. "You can't let that hold you back, you know," he commented.
She nodded, but it felt half-hearted to him.
"I'm Hawks," he said, introducing himself on the chance she didn't know who he was. "What's your name, little bird?"
"Kagome," she stated.
The irony of the name wasn't lost on him, and he had to smother the urge to chuckle. There was no doubt in his mind that she was just as aware of it as he was.
"You can't let that fear keep you grounded when you're born to soar." He paused and smiled at her. "You got them, and it'd be a real bummer if you never use them." He stood up at his full height, once more patting her head. "Sure, it won't always come naturally, but that's part of learning. You might fall a handful of times- I did," he admitted with a laugh. "But it's not a bad thing!"
She looked up to meet his stare.
"All you gotta do is put yourself out there and try," he said.
She nodded, and he grinned.
"So what do you say?" he hummed. "Gonna give it a shot?"
With a bit more certainty behind it, she nodded again. "I will," she said. He sent her an encouraging smile.
"All right! That's what I like to hear!" Hawks exclaimed. "Give it your best shot. I'm sure you'll be joining me as a pro in no time at all!"
He stepped back to get on with his day, but, before he got too far he reached to collect her fallen bag from the ground. A notebook fell out as he picked it up. He scribbled a quick autograph down on a vacant page before handing it back to her, along with her bag.
"I've gotta go," he said. "Take care, little bird!"
It'd been nearly a year and a half since her encounter with the red-winged pro hero, yet it was a memory she kept close. A few seconds were slow to tick by when, from over the distance, her blue eyes met a pair of golden-brown, and she abruptly froze.
Inuyasha noticed her reaction quickly, craning his head to the side as he picked up on her rapid heartbeat "You okay?" he asked. He searched for whatever might've caused it, but nothing stood out as obvious.
His voice caught her attention, and she jerked slightly as she looked his way. A second later, she nodded, a hand coming up to twist at a long lock of raven hair hanging over her shoulder.
"I..-! Yeah!" she exclaimed. She could feel the red-winged hero's attention lingering on her from over the distance. She let her grip on her hair fall, as she let her wings lift her from the rooftop. "L-Let's head back to the shrine," she said. Inuyasha looked at her, confused, but he didn't argue.
"Yeah, sure, whatever," he stated. Kagome took his words as all the initiative she needed, fluttering her wings a few times before she turned to head home to the shrine. Inuyasha followed easily, leaping from rooftop to rooftop as he matched her pace.
"U.A?" Kun-Loon was taken aback by Kagome's comment, turning from the stove to look at where the girl stood alongside her silver-haired companion. She nodded, and Kun-Loon swapped the heat of the stove to low before turning fully to face the teenager. "Since when were you interested in Hero Courses?" she asked.
Kagome was silent for a few moments, her wings tucking a bit over her shoulders as she combed the messy feathers out. "I've been considering it for a while now," she stated. "I… already passed the written test, so now all I have is the practical," she admitted. Her group would be first thing tomorrow in the morning.
Kun-Loon's eyes lit up at the information. "That's wonderful!" she exclaimed. While she was surprised by the news, she was happy either way. "I just know you'll do great in the practical test!" she assured her.
Kagome smiled. She was glad her decision was met with positivity, and it left her feeling a lot more optimistic.

It was a few hours later when she found herself up in her room. The open window invited a calm breeze as she sat at her desk. She'd just gotten a bath, ready for bed, when she sat down to fix her hair. She doubted she'd be able to get much sleep while her mind was busy preparing for the vents tomorrow would have in stow for her.
Once she'd tied her hair back in a loose braid, Kagome stood up from her seat and went to shut her window finally. She made her way to her bed, pausing before she could pull the covers back, hand hovering mid-air as her eyes scanned over her bed. A second later, she frowned and stepped back.
"Where is it?" she half-whined, climbing up on her bed to peer along the other side by the wall. After a second or two more of searching, she found what she'd been looking for. Bright blue eyes lit up as she reached down, fingers sinking into the soft, plushy material.
"Aren't you a little old to have a plush?" Souta asked as he spotted the object cradled in his sister's arms. The raven-haired teen paused, pursing her lips in a pout.
"No!" she bit back with a huff.
Souta arched a brow, eyes lingering on the plush of Hawks, the red-winged pro hero. The longer he looked at her, the deeper her face bled red. The white wings behind her fluffed up some as she jutted her nose up.
"Why don't you just mind your own business," she bit out in a snippy huff. Souta sighed and shrugged.
She gently brushed any dust off of the red-winged plush that it might've collected during its brief stay on the floor. Once she was done, she hugged it to her chest as she fixed her blankets back. A second later, she set it down by her pillow.
Maybe she was a little old, but she didn't care.
Auroua-chan: I've wanted to do this one for a long time now! Before posting, I did a complete overhaul of this chapter, though.
Honestly, I'm torn between having this be Hawks/Kagome or have the two of them have a more brother/sister relationship, and have her end up with someone else. I could definitely see him being a great match either way.
In the next chapter, Kagome will be meeting a few people who will end up in her future class! Some she'll blend well with, others… not so much.
Anyway, that's it for now! Thank you all for reading and I hope you all enjoyed! Hopefully I caught all the errors before posting, but if not sorry.
Please remember to Review&Favorite&Follow, thank you!
Bye for now~
