Chapter 07: The Waiting Game And Part Of The Truth.
Morning came and she woke up to Damon shaking her asking her if she slept in those chairs all night. She said she did and that she had slept in worse places. Then accepted the coffee and asked if they were any news.
"Yeah, things are looking bad, so I gave her my blood. Hopefully, it helps." Damon said gently and she nodded.
"Thank you for yesterday." Damon added quietly and she nodded again as she got up and tried to fix her clothes and stretch her body.
Stefan then appeared with various vending machine snacks and handed them to her friends who were also waking up.
Stefan then told her that they needed to talk in the Boarding House when Slater texted her, he too had left the town for a few days, and that his contacts told him that Katherine was in town.
"Yeah, we do." Elena said troubled.
After asking Jeremy to call her with any news she went with the brothers to their house.
"Katherine is here, in town. I was just told by one of my contacts." Elena stated the moment the door shut behind Stefan.
"That's what we need to talk about; your contacts…how did you acquire them?" Damon started the conversation.
"It's a very long story but I told you that it's not safe for me to talk now." Elena stated and Damon rolled his eyes.
"This house is the safest place!" Damon exclaimed and Elena laughed out loud then said;
"In this house about 486 bugs are transmitting live since 1969, guys…it's the least safe place." Elena said as she took her phone out and pressed the bug scanning device and then showed it to the brothers.
"The red lights are the indication of a bug, camera or microphone." Elena explained and then went and dislodged it from behind a painting.
After that, they spent hours debugging the place. Once it was debugged they sat in the living room sipping water and Bourbon.
"So, are you going to tell us what is happening? How do you know Enzo?" Damon pressed and Elena sighed. She wasn't about to spill the beans because she didn't want to. Also, she wasn't going to get the satisfaction away from Enzo to make his big reveal. Also, also, she had already told them she couldn't tell them; she had set boundaries and they were pressing them! Trying to get what they wanted no matter what she said! It was expected to be honest…
"No, I'm not because I already told you that I can't tell you and you'll have to respect it." Elena set her foot down, but her voice became weird and made Elena frown, it's like she sounded older more grave.
It felt odd because the voice reminded her of the episodes she used to have, she had theorized that it was her higher self speaking through her or a future version or an ancestor or guardian.
"Okay don't tell us what is going on, tell us how you know Enzo at least!" Damon exclaimed angrily and Elena felt Finn standing behind her and her magic bubbling to the surface as she sensed danger.
"I have known him since I was eight he has been my family since then, why? Do you know each other?" Elena semi-lied and faked confusion as she frowned.
"What?" Damon looked taken aback just then her phone rang and it was Slater.
"I'm sorry, I have to take this." She said as she rushed out of the house and did a quick silencing spell before answering.
"Can't talk, I will call you back once I'm at home." She said quickly before hanging up. She deactivated the spell and turned around to see Stefan and Damon watching her from a distance.
"Who was on the phone?" Stefan asked quietly and Elena fought to roll her eyes.
"My godfather, actually I better go and give him a call " Elena said seriously with hints of annoyance as she grabbed her bag.
None of the Salvatores stopped her so she walked all the way home which was a long way, she knew deep down Stefan was starting to second-guess her and their relationship and honestly she didn't mind. Although, she hoped she could have some sort of friendship with them both. Or even better if they hated her now or just didn't see her as alluring to care to not spoil what was coming and get in the middle of it.
On the walk there she called Slater just when she was far away from vampiric earshot.
"I haven't heard from you in a while, little one. Are you okay?" Slater's concerned voice made Elena feel so at peace and at home.
In her mind she imagined living in an apartment or a house with Finn and hosting weekend dinners or everyday dinner with her, Finn, Slater and Enzo her family. Of course, Jeremy and Jenna can also come but they would have to know the truth and be okay with it. Oh! The life!
"I'm doing okay…just stressed…my bio dad is in town trying to kill you all…How are you? Are you home? Can I come?" She sighed as she walked watching the greenery around her.
"I'm doing okay, kid, yes I'm home. Just grab some dinner on your way."
"Okay! See ya in half an hour."
Once she rang at Slater's door she felt her legs like jello, between dancing those folk dances, the whole ordeal last night and now the walking she hadn't given herself time to properly rest her body or mind.
Slater had laid the table and the two sat down and started exchanging news for the next two hours.
"Honey, you have your plate full and I'm so glad you're talking with Enzo again! It's been so awkward at work! I saw your point and I saw his too and I just didn't want to lose either of you. So, I stepped back. But you're right about the trust in your team during missions. That protocol, for the week, isn't fishable during active missions, I'll talk to Virginia maybe we can have some re-evaluation of the protocol initiative." Slater rambled as they moved from the dining table to the living room beer in his hand and cherry soda in Elena's hand.
"You have such pull?" Elena asked shocked and Slater smirked proudly.
"I do, kid!"
"Proud! I'm so proud of you! Come here!" Elena exclaimed as she jumped in his arms squeezing him. Then she gave him a big kiss on the cheek and then another squeezing hug. Slater chuckled and accepted the assault.
Just as things were euphorically happy Slater tensed and pushed Elena off him and in vamp-speed appeared at the door, Elena ran behind him only to see Rose and Trevor.
"You found her." Rose breathed out in shock seeing Elena and Elena waved awkwardly.
"Technically I found him." Elena added proudly and Slater rolled his eyes as Trevor and Rose entered.
"We were just coming to ask you to track her down." Trevor explained shocked and Elena shrugged.
"Trevor, you're not giving her to Elijah." Slater stated protectively and Trevor eyed them amused.
"You got in his pants, didn't you?" Trevor taunted them and both Slater and Elena shivered before making a disgusting face.
"FUCK NO! EWW DUDE! We just ate! Jesus, I'm going to throw up!" Elena exclaimed as she jiggled her body as if to shake off a spider web off her and then pulled her tongue out and closed her eyes shut.
"What she said! Yuck!" Slater added copying Elena's moves.
Rose and Trevor watched confused and Rose was a bit amused.
"So, why so protective?" Trevor asked confused.
"Because she's my friend…no not good enough of description, she's like…honestly, I view her as my family!" Slater explained and Elena awed before returning the sentiment.
"But we need to earn Elijah's good graces." Rose said perplexed and Elena motioned for them to come in.
Once inside Elena told them how she figured everything out when she was younger by overhearing her parents argue, not that it happened, but it was better than the whole truth. She didn't trust Trevor that much. Rose, was okay but still she didn't think that the version Elena remembered from the show was going to make her appearance yet considering that this Rose hadn't gone through what she did originally causing her to alter her view on things and loyalties.
Not yet at least.
Elena hoped she at least kept her alive and not bitten by a werewolf.
"So? You're biding your time doing what?" Trevor asked confused.
"Learning. Learning how your world works so I can use it to my advantage when Klaus comes. Katherine has made her appearance so that means soon so will spies of his or Elijah's."
"So, you plan to allow him to become his full self?" Rose asked surprised.
"Yes, as long as there's no bloodshed. Refusing him will cause that."
"So, how are we going to earn Elijah's good grace if we don't deliver you?" Trevor asked confused.
"Two things, find a werewolf and a vampire that are evil enough to kill. Then the second thing is to help me find the moonstone. If we acquire those things before Katherine does and Elijah comes, we can spin this like you were protecting me making sure I was kept human for Klaus. And you found those items too to make matters easier for them because you need to make up for losing Katherine." Elena suggested with a factual tone.
Slater watched her proudly, she had grown so much from the scared little girl he met online. She knew how to be a diplomat now and not just offer up info for free.
"That could work." Trevor said deep in thought.
Elena beamed excited and relieved.
"Honestly, you're helping me so much, guys! You will be taken to three tasks I had to do on my own or with Slater plus school and some family drama that I have. Thank you guys!" Elena said relieved and Rose smiled amused.
"You really are doing this, it's not a show, is it?" Rose asked surprised and Elena nodded.
"Look, I imagine it like this; somebody is transgender and wants and needs gender-affirming care, be it hormones or a complete change of gender surgery, everyone is refusing him but I can help to be who he truly is. It would be selfish and inhumane not to aid. As for death, I don't fear it and I have a feeling that I might not need to die entirely for the sacrifice, but I'm still doing research on it." Elena explained eagerly and Rose with Trevor nodded a little unsure how the allegory about trans people fit into the category of Klaus.
"Being anything but his foe would be in our best interest in other words." Slater added and Elena nodded agreeing with him.
"We will do it." Trevor stated and Elena squealed happily as she hugged him thanking him again and doing the same to Rose, both taken aback.
They exchanged phone numbers and emails and Trevor with Rose went on to look for vamps and werewolves worth killing.
Elena turned to Slater and mocked a bow making him shake his head.
"Honestly, I don't know how can you spin lies and truths so perfectly…you scare me!" Slater said shaking his head.
After half an hour of them just chit-chatting she returned home to find John being glared at by Jeremy and Jenna.
"Why we're glaring?" She whispered at Jeremy who jumped hearing her.
"We are glaring because Uncle John is lying about vampires and mythical creatures and how you have been lying to all of us!" Jeremy said angrily and Elena was gobsmacked.
That little shit!
"Well, he's not lying but that wasn't the right way to do it! All of you sit your butts down!" She exclaimed tiredly as she gently pushed both her brother and aunt towards the sitting room and then dragged John too.
Spent about half an hour explaining the lore and then another half her part in it and everything that occurred until now.
"I can't believe it!" Jenna mumbled shocked and Elena chuckled.
"I haven't finished yet." She said chuckling then added the part about her being adopted and Isobel and John.
This reveal caused uproar from John who was handled and silenced by Elena's glare.
Jeremy was quiet but seemed to be handling it well which made Elena feel calmer and optimistic about it.
"That doesn't explain how you had snipers and two guns, Elena! They literarily appeared out of nowhere!" John yelled at her concerned and angry.
"Guns?!" Jenna added with shock as she eyed Elena with wide eyes.
"You had to bring that one up, didn't you?" Elena said rhetorically glaring at John.
Another half an hour went by with her explaining the lore of the Petrova bloodline and witches and then about her having powers.
"Who taught you how to use them?" Jeremy asked very excited and Elena smiled as she pulled from her back pocket her ARMORY badge.
"They did. Those snipers, John, were my teammates from the agency." Elena admitted as she showed them her badge.
"Agent Marilena Dimitriadou - Petrova? That's not your name." John said confused and Elena nodded.
"That's the point. That way you all are safe from people I deal with on every mission. If someone wants retribution won't find anything on Marilena besides her ARMORY identity keeping you all safe." Elena explained and John with Jenna looked worried while Jeremy looked amazed.
"You're like a spy?! Like James Bond?" Jeremy exclaimed excited and Elena nodded.
"Yeah, the agency is making sure that the supernatural isn't found out from the humans and the humans are safe from the supernatural. I was recruited after mum and dad died." Elena explained proudly and everyone looked a variation of shocked.
"Grief counselling…" Jenna realized and Elena nodded.
"It was all a cover for training. But none of you can go around parading that, the ARMORY is a shadow organization! That means, John, you can't say anything to the Council or Isobel." Elena explained and he nodded.
"So, what is your mission?" Jeremy asked excitedly and Elena sighed.
"Now, nothing, I'm just keeping the Salvatores from spilling more blood, namely Damon."
"Did you have other missions?" Jenna asked scared and Elena nodded.
"The week trip….it wasn't supposed to be a week. It was a one-day operation, extracting a family from Iraq who were in danger. I got captured along with the family. Spend a week waiting for backup, held hostage by human militia. The family were witches the village wanted to burn for witchcraft. Can't tell you more about it though." Elena said seriously and fought a shiver from going through her.
Jenna's gasp shook Elena from the spiral of memories and found herself being engulfed in a hug.
"What do you mean hostage?" John asked as if he failed to capture the meaning of the word.
"I mean hostage, John." Elena emphasized her words.
"Were you tortured?" John asked horrified and Elena just stared at him, the haunted eyes were answered enough for him.
"YOU'RE SEVENTEEN! WHAT THE HELL?" John blew up and Elena cursed silently.
"I was trained to withstand torture, John! It's fine! I'm dealing just fine!" Elena yelled trying to appease to his outburst.
It wasn't fine but she learned to live with it.
"That doesn't matter! Jenna how didn't you notice that?!"
"It wasn't Jenna's fault, John! I blindsided her!"
"Your injuries? Didn't she see the injuries?!"
"I saw no injuries John!"
"Bullshit!"
"She didn't, alright! I was given vampire blood to heal!" Elena blew up stepping in the middle of John's and Jenna's heated glares and pushing them away from each other.
"Why would you do that? You could have turned!" John gasped and Elena sighed.
"I had to return to school, how else was I supposed to do that?"
"School? Really?"
"Yes, school and my friends they're the reason why I held out. This topic is over though! What is done is done!"
"And John if you force me again to spill the beans or harm my friends I will take actions that both of us wouldn't like."
Elena warned him before she climbed up the stairs to go to bed at last.
The following days were a bit awkward with her family staring at her like she was an alien and visiting Caroline at the hospital.
Caroline was fairing pretty well and Elena was relieved.
"We should clue Matt and Tyler in." Caroline said one day as they played UNO during visiting hours.
"We will, not yet though." Elena confirmed and Caroline nodded.
On the Salvatore front, things were too quiet which irked Elena but Caroline had to be the primary focus now.
Enzo hadn't texted saying how Damon found him so that was okay.
