Chapter 3
With the previous night's revelations still fresh in his mind, his father arranged for him to see the person who holds the key to the new challenges that now enveloped his life—Sam Uley.
Sam, a figure of authority in the Quileute tribe and a known mentor to those connected to the wolf spirit, had faced a similar transformation, transforming alone in the forest. But, unlike Jacob, he didn't have someone to help guide him back, and had wandered in his wolf form for weeks before changing back. Jacob couldn't imagine what he would've done without that gentle stranger in the forest.
With a feeling of trepidation, he set off to navigate the familiar path leading to the Quileute community's heart.
As Jacob approached Sam's dwelling, he felt his stomach twist with anxiety. From the very first time Jacob met Same Uley, he felt an unexplainable discomfort. Maybe it was the way Sam seemed to linger around him, always watching. Or maybe it was the way Sam never seemed to take a hint when Jacob clearly wasn't interested in joining his gang. Whatever it was, Jacob had no choice but to be a part of Sam's Pack, and it would mark a turning point, a step into a world that, until now, had remained shrouded in secrecy.
Sam, sensing Jacob's approach, emerged from the shadows, his gaze filled with understanding. Without exchanging words, Sam acknowledged the unspoken connection—the shared burden of a supernatural legacy.
"Jacob," Sam began, his voice steady and reassuring. "I sensed the change in you. Welcome to the pack."
In the presence of Sam, Jacob felt a sense of both unease and belonging. Sam, as the seasoned Quileute mentor, was supposed to guide Jacob and the other Quileute through the nuances of the wolf spirit, sharing the ancient knowledge and offering insights into the responsibilities that came with their unique heritage.
Jacob was at a loss for words and simply gave him a knowing nod.
"I only wish I was there for your first change, Jacob." A look of remorse crossed his face. "I didn't think it would happen so soon. The spirit of the wolf must be very strong in you."
As the day unfolded, Sam introduced Jacob to the rest of the wolf pack—Paul and Jared. Individuals who, like him, had been touched by the spirit of the wolf.
"Quil is my second cousin, if this runs in our blood, does that mean someday he might...?" Jacob trailed off and shuddered. He did not want to envision one of his best friends going through the terror of the first change as he did.
Sam nodded thoughtfully. "It is possible. But only time will tell."
The wolf pack, a close-knit group bound by an unbreakable bond, welcomed Jacob into their midst. Together, they stood as guardians of the Quileute tribe, protectors of the natural balance, and a force united against the lurking dangers of the Cold Ones.
"Jacob, the Cullens are vampires," Sam explained that evening, his voice low and serious. "Our ancestors made a pact with them long ago, a treaty that established a fragile peace between our two kinds."
As Sam delved into the history, he detailed how the Quileutes had agreed not to expose the Cullens as vampires to the outside world, in exchange for the Cullens refraining from hunting humans. The delicate balance had kept the peace for generations, but recent events had strained the treaty.
"The Cullens, while vampires, don't hunt humans. They've upheld their end of the bargain," Sam continued, his gaze fixed on him. "But their presence here brings danger, especially with one of them spending time with a particular human. We must remain vigilant to protect our people and our way of life."
"A particular human?" Jacob questioned.
"Yes, it seems that one of them has been spending time with Chief Swan's daughter. Though they claim to not feed on humans, it's only a matter of time before they slip up with their bloodthirsty nature."
Knowing that a vampire had been spending a significant amount of time with Bella hit Jacob like a sudden storm, stirring concern and distress within him. She was the daughter of his father's best friend. And a childhood friend of his. He couldn't help but wonder about the nature of her relationship with the vampire. Was she in danger? Had she willingly chosen to be with them?
He knew that the supernatural world could pose a threat to her safety. The uncertainty gnawed at him, fueling fear and frustration. He would have to make sure nothing happened to her.
In the company of the wolf pack, Jacob found the support needed to navigate the complexities of his newfound identity. Jacob emerged from three days of intensive training with Sam, ready to face the challenges that awaited him.
The desire to protect Bella, now intertwined with his responsibilities as a member of the wolf pack, spurred him into action.
Jacob carefully approached his father. "Dad, I need to transfer to Forks High School." He announced to him.
Billy looked taken aback. "Is there something wrong with the high school on the reservation?"
"No, It's just... I want to keep an eye on Bella, make sure she's safe," Jacob insisted.
Billy gave him an understanding look and nodded in agreement. "Ah, yes. Sam mentioned she'd been bewitched by the Cullens. I don't see why not, I've heard great things about Forks High. Are you sure?"
"Yes." He assured him, his gaze reflecting the resolve that had taken root.
With the decision made, Jacob took the steps to enroll at Forks High School.
But even with all the life-changing events around him, he could not stop thinking about the stranger he had met in the forest. He found himself wondering who the stranger was and where he had come from, unable to shake the feeling that their meeting had been more than mere chance.
