Warnings and Information
Bella Pov
I spent the afternoon with Jake, while we walked up and down the length of the beach. We caught up with life, and talked about our childhood memories. He seemed to remember a lot more than I did, I felt sorry for the trauma I had put him through when I spent my summers here.
" What is Sam like?" I asked, changing the subject.
"What do you mean?"
"I feel like he is controlling but not in a bad way, I suppose in charge." I tried to explain.
"He is in charge, he is the Alpha of the pack our leader. He doesn't abuse his position, he is fair and understanding."
"I kind of got that idea, I suppose I'm just trying to figure him out." I shrugged.
"Just keep an open mind Bella, if you have any questions, just ask him. Once you know about the pack, we don't keep secrets. We all live together, keeping secrets would cause issues."
" You all live at the house Sam wanted me to go to today?"
"Yes, it's not just the pack, there are two other girls that live there also." Jake replied, taking my arm and leading me towards the parking lot.
"I'm not very good at making friends and keeping them. " I whispered, feeling nervous."
"Well that's a load of crap, you just need to meet the right people Bella."
Jake led me back towards his house, we walked passed a green truck, similar to mine but a lot newer.
"Sam is here, come on we must be late."
We walked into the house, and stopped in the entrance to the living room where Billy and Sam were sat
"You are late Jake." Sam commented, as he stood up.
"Yeah, sorry, the time just went quick, right I have to go, see you later Bella." Jake said, as he walked out the door.
"Did you get all your school work done?" Billy asked, standing up and Joining Sam.
"Yes, I'm almost finished, will probably have it done by tomorrow."
"I will Speak to you later Billy, come on Bella, lets go to the diner." Sam said, while putting his hand on the bottom of my back and leading me back out the door.
He guided me to the green truck that was parked up, and opened the passenger door for me. I climbed in, and took a look around while Sam closed the door and walked around the front of the truck. The inside was definitely a lot more modern than my red truck, the seats were more padded and there wasn't a stale damp smell to it.
"Nice truck" I commented, once Sam was in the truck and starting it.
He grinned at me and put it into reverse "A bit more newer than yours." He chuckled.
We drove in silence as we left the reservation and headed back towards Forks, the diner was situated between Forks and La Push. A great place for both towns, tourists, and truck drivers passing through.
Ten minutes later, Sam parked up and we both got out of the truck together and met at the front. I felt his hand on the bottom of my back as we walked towards the entrance. I smiled, when he stepped a head and opened the door for me, putting his hand back on my back and ushering me inside.
"Find a seat, and I will be with you in a few minutes. Menus are on the tables." The waitress called out, once the door was shut.
We made our way to an empty booth, near the back of the diner and sat down.
"Evening Bella, Sam" I looked up and recognised Sue Clearwater. She was the wife of one of dad's best friends Harry, she was always so friendly when I would visit during my summers here. When I heard about her daughter Leah, I felt so sorry for them.
" Hi Sue, how are you?" I asked.
" All good, how are you?"
"I'm good, how is Leah?" I asked.
I remember my dad telling me about Leah's accident on one of our phone calls about a year and a half ago. She was trekking through the forest, when a bear attacked her from behind with it's claws. The claws struck her from the top of her head all the way down to her back, it caused a massive brain bleed leaving her with permanent brain damage and a damaged spine.
"She is in a new therapy unit and managed to take some steps, we are hoping that she will be home soon."
"That is good news, no place like home." She smiled at my words and placed two glasses of water down.
"I will give you both a few minutes to decide what to order and I will be back." Sam nodded.
I looked back at Sam shuddering a bit, he raised his eyebrow asking a silent question. "I hate bears, they scare me."
"Bears rarely come down this far, and the few we have come across while in wolf form further out, we have scared away."
"Good, dad has never mentioned a bear coming this close to town until Leah's accident."
"It wasn't a bear that attacked Leah." Sam whispered, causing me to open my eyes wide and about to ask what it was.
Sam probably guessed what I was going to ask and whispered back "I will tell you later, not here."
I nodded and went back to looking at the menu, deciding to have the chicken in barbecue sauce with fries and salad.
Sue came back after a few minutes and we ordered our food, "How are you doing Bella?" Sam asked, once Sue had walked away.
I played with the napkin, ripping little bits off. I wanted to say fine but had a feeling Sam wouldn't believe me. "I don't know." I shrugged.
What do you say when you have had your heart broken by someone who claimed to be your mate, they then left taking the only family you really knew away.
"Give it time Bella, we are all here for you."
"What about the whole mortal enemy thing, none of you will want to hear me crying about them." I snapped at him. Closing my eyes, to reign my temper in.
"Watch it" Sam snapped back.
"Sorry" I apologised, what was with me. I had only known Sam a day and was already snapping at him.
"Bella, we get that they broke your heart and left you. I don't want you hurting because of what he has done to you and if talking about it helps, none of us will judge you." Sam said softly.
"I just have a lot going on in my head right now, I think I'm just overwhelmed." I replied, keeping my voice even.
"Yeah, maybe my timing was off, letting you know about the pack." He chuckled, and I couldn't help but laugh with him. He was probably right, but I hated secrets.
"Do you think fairies, trolls, mermaids and unicorns exist?" I asked grinning, changing the subject.
Sam let out a laugh and shaking his head, "Two years ago I would of said no, those things only belong in books, but now I have no idea."
"It would be cool if unicorns existed."
"Why?" Sam asked
"They are beautiful creatures, and they look so magical." I answered him.
"The books could be wrong though, instead of these nice gentle animals. Real unicorns could be flesh eating monsters."
I laughed at him and shaking my head "what a way to ruin my unicorn dreams." I giggled.
Sam laughed, "if you do see anything that you thought was just in books, run and hide."
I nodded at him and laughed, we stopped laughing when our food arrived. It looked and smelt delicious, but it was a huge portion and I knew I could never eat all of that.
While we were eating, we talked about his construction business and what I wanted to do after I graduated school, the food was good but I felt full after eating about a quarter of it.
"Eat Bella," Sam said when he realised I had put my cutlery down.
"I'm full" I told him, sitting back in my seat.
"Really, you have hardly eaten any of it."
"I don't need to eat much before I get full." I told him.
"You need to eat more than that Bella, you are too skinny ."
I bit my bottom lip to stop myself from losing my temper, what was it with people concerning their selves with how much I ate. My dad, them and now Sam.
Sam just sat there staring at me with his arms crossed, he was waiting for me to say something. I didn't want to snap at him, so just stared back. He shook his head and grabbed my plate pushing it so it was between us.
"Right, how about we share the rest, we both have a mouthful at the same time." Sam suggested.
"How are you not full up?" I asked, his plate was overloaded with food.
"It takes a lot of energy to phase into my wolf, so I need to eat a lot to be full."
I nodded and picked up my fork, and stabbing some of the chicken. Sam copied me by getting his own piece of chicken.
In minutes the plate was empty, I was also aware that Sam was taking smaller bites than me. I felt so full, I was either going to burst or fall into a food coma.
"Do you want dessert?" Sam asked.
I must of made a face because Sam started to laugh. "OK, I will pay the bill and then we can leave."
I watched him leave the booth and make his way over to the counter, he was talking to Sue and I watched as he nodded his head and Sue looked like she was going to cry. He said something else and I could see Sue trying to smile, Sam then squeezed her hand and turned around to make his way back to me.
I stood up and put my coat back on, and walked out of the booth. I waved to Sue as we were leaving and she waved back with a forced smile.
"What was that about?" I asked, as we made our way over to Sam's truck.
"The past" Sam replied, sounding sad.
"Oh" I replied, not sure what else to say.
"Let's go to the beach, and we can talk" Sam said has he pulled out of the parking lot.
"I'm not walking along the beach at this time of night, it's dark and cold. What if mermaids are real and they eat human flesh."
Sam, smiled at me shaking his head, "I will park up at the beach and we can sit in the truck and talk."
I nodded in agreement with him, and watched the dark forest as we drove by for a bit before turning and watching Sam drive.
When we got to the beach, Sam turned the truck off and turned in his seat. I copied him and done the same, pulling my knees up to rest my head on.
"Before I became a wolf, I was dating Leah Clearwater. It was your typical high school romance and I thought she was the one." Sam spoke, looking directly into my eyes. I nodded and waited for him to say more.
" Once I had calmed down and remembered the stories I was able to return back to human again, I went to Billy's and told him. He called a council meeting and I was told things that doesn't get told in the stories around the bonfires that we regularly have." I listened silently, has Sam seemed to get a sad look in his eyes.
"I was told about the wolf finding his mate, and I knew then that Leah was not my mate. So I ended the relationship, it wasn't fair to her, knowing that in the future I would find my true mate."
"How does a wolf know when they have found their true mate?" I asked.
Sam smiled, "They just do and there are certain clues to look out for."
"Have any of the wolves found there true mates, I asked?"
He smiled again and nodded " it's not just the wolves that live at our house, two human females also live there."
"Jake told me earlier about them."
"Kim and Emily, Kim is Jared's mate and Emily is Paul's. Emily is also Leah's cousin." Sam explained.
I could just imagine how messy that probably got, she gets dumped and her cousin is suddenly with her ex boyfriends friend.
"I imagine that caused a few problems"
"Not right away, Paul didn't phase until six months after I did. Jared phased a month after me, and then it was Paul. Once Paul had phased, the council gave me the keys to our house and we all moved in there."
"That was good of the them to do that."
Sam nodded "The house has always belonged to the pack, after we phase it is easier if we all live together."
This was the house Sam wanted me to visit today, maybe I should accept their invite next time they ask.
"So back to Leah's accident, for months after I ended it, Leah would try to follow me around. She couldn't accept that we were over. A few weeks after we has moved into the house, Emily came over with a note from Leah. Paul took the note from her and recognised that Emily was his mate."
"So is it like love at first sight?" I asked.
"No, just that this is the person that could make you happy and bring some unity to the pack."
"So almost like a neon sign, saying hey look at me." I commented.
Sam chuckled before nodding " so are you ready to here the rest of the story, I will warn you though it doesn't have a nice ending."
"Is this the part where Leah got hurt?" I asked.
Sam nodded, "I'm going to tell you not to scare but to treat it has a warning of what could happen. Bella, I need you to promise me that your opinion of the wolves won't change."
"I'm thinking that it was wolf claws that hurt Leah, I've met them all and I don't think it was ever done on purpose." None of guys gave me a bad feeling, or had come across has violent.
" You are right about both things, just don't judge him.
"I promise I won't the wolf that done it" I vowed.
"Good, so the only living family that Emily has is the Clearwater's, her parents and sister were killed in a home burglary gone wrong, I think it was around the same time you stopped coming to Forks. Once Paul realised that Emily was his mate, we sat her down and told her about the pack and everything else." Sam explained.
I bit my lip, in anticipation and to stop asking any questions.
"Now once Paul and Emily completed their bond, it was obvious that Emily needed to move into the house. Paul needed to know where she was and that she was safe, Emily needed to be near the pack."
I nodded, so he knew I was still listening.
"At the time this all happened, Harry was the only one who knew about the wolf pack. While he was out hunting, with your dad of all people, Emily had moved out after telling Sue where she was going."
Sam paused and looked sad, so I reached out and squeezed his hand. Before I could take my hand back he held it and kept hold of it.
"A few hours later, we were all in the house and there is a knock on the door. Emily being closest to the door, opened it and it was Leah. Leah was always so impulsive, she started shouting at Emily and tried to force her out of the house."
"Leah was always like that and so bossy, I remember when I was younger and we would play together." I interrupted.
Sam blinked slowly and them continued talking, " So Paul being a newly phased wolf, viewed it has someone trying to take his mate away from him. He managed to drag Emily away from Leah, pushing her into my arms. Leah called Emily some awful names before turning away, and start to step off the porch. Paul lost control of his wolf, and he phased too close to Leah. As his paws came down to land on the ground, one of his paws caught Leah."
He finished then, as I knew what happened next, I sat there in silence. I felt sorry for all of them, Leah would never be the same, Emily witnessing the accident and Paul, it wasn't his fault he couldn't control himself.
"Say something Bella, I need to know how you feel about being around the wolves now." Sam pleaded.
I sat in silence for some time, I asked myself, now that I knew what could happen, did my opinion of the wolves change? The simple answer was no, I had met all the wolves and none of then scared them. I didn't get a bad vibe off them, Paul was forced to protect his mate, from the short time I had been around him, I didn't get the feeling that he was violent.
"Bella, you are making me nervous." Sam, said, breaking me from my thoughts.
"Just thinking Sam, last time I got involved with the supernatural it didn't end well for me on more than one occasion."
"If what happened with Paul scares you, I can tell him to keep his distance until you learn to trust him." Sam offered.
"No!" I shouted, making him jump.
"Bella?" Sam seemed to ask.
"Sorry, didn't mean to shout, no my opinion of the wolves hasn't changed, and please don't keep Paul away. That would look like I was punishing him for something he had no control over." I explained.
"Good, you had me worried then with how quiet you got, I know that you were good friends with Leah when you would visit your dad in the summers. I thought you might have judged Paul on his past actions."
"No, sounds like to me Leah is mostly to blame for what happened to her."
"Everybody like to play the blame game," Sam whispered, and I wasn't sure if I was supposed to hear it, so I ignored him. "It's getting late, lets get you back to Billy's." Sam said while turning his body back to the front of the truck and starting it.
