The continuation of Maureen and Olivia's conversation
Guys I can't believe the response to this fic. Thank you so much for the kudos and bookmarks and taking time to comment.
Here's part 2 of the conversation.
I promise not to take long to update.
SVU is not mine, I own nothing but my crazy thoughts.
"Maureen," she looked up when she heard her full name and heard the regret in Olivia's voice. "Your father and I didn't fight, in fact the last time I saw him, I was sure I would see him the next day."
"I'm sorry, what?" Maureen couldn't believe what she was hearing.
"It was Captain Cragen who told me you dad had put his papers in" she took a deep breath "I called for months, he never picked up. Must have left a hundred voicemails until his phone wouldn't take any new ones. Then, one day, I had to pack his desk, it was like it was frozen in time. His files, his pens and all the little post it's with written reminders. I still remember the one in his computer pick up milk on the way home." Her voice shook a little and a tear came down her left cheek. To Maureen it looked like she didn't even noticed. "I put it all in a box and headed out to Queens, and there it was, the 'SOLD' sign in front of the house. That's when I finally accepted he was gone."
Maureen was openly crying now. "I don't get it, how could he do that. You were his best friend. Liv, I swear to you we had no idea. Dad was so messed up after that last case, we really thought there was a fight. Mom said not to bother you." The younger woman looked so broken up about the situation.
"You know, Mo, you don't have to be sorry, really. Whatever happened, I'm sure your mother had her reasons"
"How can you say that? You are here telling me how you best friend abandoned you, how it was terrible and you are still making excuses like your pain didn't matter"
"Oh believe me, it took me years of therapy to get here. But what happened is in the past. And Maureen, I wouldn't ever want for you to think badly of you mother, she did the best she could with what she was given" Olivia again justified. "And don't think I didn't miss you guys, because I did. By that time I didn't think I would ever have a family of my own. I loved you kids like you were mine. It took me a minute to get back to normal"
"And then he happened" Maureen assumed.
Olivia felt her sweat become cold, and her breathing shorter. She did her best to remain in the moment. "Yes, and then he happened"
"Will you tell me about it?"
Startled with Maureen's request, Olivia stood up and started pacing around in front of the couch. "It's not something I talk about, really. And I don't know if I want to put those images in your head"
"I understand is difficult, but I think I want to know if you are willing to share"
Sitting back down, this time closer to Maureen, she debated with the choice ultimately deciding to tell her. She felt Maureen's hands taking hers as if to show she was there. "He was at my apartment when I got there." She started.
"It was a public nudity case, should had been open and close. But then Amanda felt something was wrong with the perp. We couldn't identify him, he had burned his fingerprints of" Maureen gasped at that. "Long story short, he raped e burned this older lady who was going to testify against him. She didn't make it. So, he got off on a technicality. I was so mad, Cragen told me to go home, not come back for two days."
She paused, Maureen was avidly hanging into every word she said. "As I said, he was already inside when I got home. Still don't know how he got in, the techs never figured it out. He kept me drunk and high, vodka was his poison of choice. It's actually funny, it was also my mother's. As if I needed another reason not to drink it." She gave a humorless smile. "He also burned me with cigarettes, heated keys and a iron hanger"
Maureen was crying silent tears now, as if making any sound would break the moment. "He had me for 4 days. Made me watch him hurting other people. Put me in the trunk of a car while he drove from place to place. He kept singing this song, I don't even know the name, but I could hear it for weeks after. He groped me and made me question every single aspect of me. I got myself out. I saved myself. He never raped me. But I also lost part of myself in those 4 days. It's been almost ten years. Even after all the therapy, I still can't stand some triggers, they send me right back to that day." Breathing deeply she continued "He made me claustrophobic. I can't drink vodka, not even smell it. The song, makes me gag every time. I've never brought any iron hangers after that. I get anxious sleeping anywhere near the ground floor, even if living up in the building didn't stop him from getting in. I can't take opioids when I get hurt, that's a pain in the ass because I get hurt more often then not in this job. The smell of bacon sends me into a full panic attack"
Maureen looked confused at that, and even if it pained her, Olivia was into full rant mode now. "You would never imagine how much fried bacon smells like burned flesh" at that the younger woman rapid took off to the bathroom just in time to make it to the toilet before throwing up any food that was in her stomach.
Slowly, Olivia made her way to the bathroom. She held her hair up and silently massaged her back until there was nothing left. They both got comfortable on the floor, with their backs against the bathtub. "Liv, I knew he had you, but I couldn't ever imagine the terror you went though. I'm so so sorry we weren't there for you. I'm so sorry my mother didn't even give him the choice. He would have been there, I'm sure he would."
"I know, sweetie. That was the day I realized he wasn't coming back. I figured if he didn't come back for me then, there was no way he ever would. And please, don't ask him about it, we already talked, it's a really sore subject among us." she took a deep breath "But there's more." She said.
"More?!" God, how much could a person take? Maureen was simply heartbroken "I didn't know, after the first news, I stopped following the news, I thought he died that day."
"He didn't die that day, there was a trial, I had to sit in front of all these people while he represented himself and tell them all the horrible things he did to me. Out of the four accusations, he was found guilty in only two"
"That's bullshit"
"The thing is, Mo, he was extremely lucky and really charming. By the time the trial was over, he had already gotten in the head jurors head. Months later, she helped him scape" Maureen looked shocked. "He called me, he hurt more people and kidnapped a 12 year old girl. I had no choice, I had to go to him. She was just a child who got caught in the crossfire. It was a mess from beginning to end." She choose to skip the whole press conference thing "He made me choose who would he rape first, and I said me." Maureen could hear her hart beating in her ears, she couldn't imagine making that kind of decision. "It wasn't a decision, really" she didn't realize she had outed her thoughts "There was ever only one answer. But the thing about Lewis is that he needs his victims to fight back. When I didn't, he quickly moved on to a game of Russian roulette. In the end, he killed himself, but now without trying to frame me for murder"
"What a son of a bitch" was all Maureen said, she didn't have anything else to say. No words could reach how sorry and ashamed she really was. "Liv, nothing I can say could ever really be enough. But we love you, we always have and we failed to show up for you. All I can promise you is that we always will, now. And if I admired you before, you can be sure to know how much more in awe I'm of you now. It's a true privilege to have you in our lives. Please, let us love you, let us love your little boy. We are family."
The tear running down Olivia's cheeks now from emotion "This is all I ever wanted. A family. For me and for Noah. Thank you, Mo." The two women embraced in the bathroom floor felt as something had shifted in their relationship. After a couple of minutes in silence, they broke apart. Each cleaning their faces and letting a quiet laugh at the absurd situation they found themselves in.
"Well, I think it's time you take that test"
What did you all think?
Who should be next? 😬
