Chapter Three
"So he actually told you?"
Kagome craned her head to the side, glancing up to meet Shippo's aqua gaze as they made their way down the halls. She nodded, lifting a hand to stifle a laugh. "Yeah, and good thing, too," she said. "I'm scared to think what my reaction might've been if I got here and suddenly realized he was here as a teacher." Kagome sighed and shook her head, her shoulders slumping some. "I'm so worried about the other students, it's not even funny…"
Shippo gently scratched the side of his face with the tips of his fingers, being mindful of his sharp claws. "Yeah… I'm pretty sure he's gonna be a source of nightmares to come for the rest…" he muttered.
"What're the odds that he might go easy on them at first?" she asked, a curious hum inflecting her words as she tapped her chin.
Shippo's shoulders slumped some as he laughed dryly. "He doesn't believe in going easy on people, you know that…" he trailed off. Kagome folded her arms over her chest and glanced to the side, a faint trace of sympathetic humor entering her blue gaze.
"He's going a bit overboard just to keep a hand in my training, don't you think?" she commented, her body shaking a bit as her nerves got jumbled up.
"You'll be his favorite!" Shippo exclaimed a second later, much to Kagome's heavy heart.
"I know," she mumbled, resting her hand over her heart as she sighed. "That's what I'm worried about…"
Being a demon's favorite wasn't exactly an… easy thing. Especially when that demon happened to be one of Sesshoumaru's standards and strengths. He wanted to help her be as powerful as she could be, she knew, and he'd do all he could to make it as such.
She sighed and cleared her worries about Sesshoumaru from her mind as they came to a halt in front of a closed door.
"We're Class 1-A, right?" Kagome asked, gazing at the text that marked the door. Shippo nodded and Kagome reached for the door to open it. "Great! This is it, then-!"
Kagome opened the door, the pressure of several stares from within the room landing on the two newest additions as the door fully opened. Curiosity got the better of her, and she let her gaze roam over the rest already present. Shippo peered in from behind her, a loose lock of auburn hair cascading over her shoulder as he towered protectively over her, glowering at anyone who he deemed had allowed their gaze linger on his mother for a second too long.
Kagome realized what he was doing the second when people glanced away from her, looking intimidated, and she stifled the urge to roll her eyes and sigh simultaneously. She reached behind her with a free hand and grabbed hold of Shippo's wrist, her tone taking a mild chime of chiding. "I know what you're up to," she hummed as she led him into the room. He merely smiled happily in response, keeping close to her without complaint or issue. "I swear… Sesshoumaru and Inuyasha were horrible influences on you," she added a second later, her scolding tone turning a bit light with amusement.
"I have no idea what you're talking about~" Shippo sang cheerfully as he gently tugged his arm free. The next second, he snaked both his arms around her hips and rested his cheek against the top of her head with a peaceful smile on his face. "I'm perfectly nice~!"
Kagome snorted and rolled her eyes. She reached up and gripped a loose lock of auburn hair, tugging gently until he relented and let her go. "You're a handful, that's what you are," she retorted flatly. Shippo grinned at her, and she couldn't help it. A smile reappeared on her face when he looked down at her, so happy. "You tormented Inuyasha all the time back then," she commented, and his smile grew some at the recollection. "You two tormented each other, but still…" she sighed and shook her head.
Her boys. That's what they were.
She could feel the faint pulse of Sesshoumaru's aura coming from somewhere on the school grounds. A part of her wanted to go find him and greet him, but she figured it'd be better to wait until she encountered him along with the rest of her class, unless he came to find her any sooner. He would be one of their combat instructors, that much she knew, but she didn't know the extent of what he would teach them. She had half a mind to think it would be similar to what he's been teaching her, but it was impossible to know what he was thinking and planning without him directly saying it.
Physical combat and strength were two things that were always important when you're desiring to be a hero. In moments where you can't use your Quirk or any other means, then that's the last line. It could be the final thing keeping you from an untimely death.
At the thought, she let her gaze stray over the figures already amassed in the classroom. She was able to get a good feel for them all that way. Quite a few seemed, at least to her, as capable students for Sesshoumaru. Despite that, she knew they'd be in for a harsh realization when that moment finally came.
Demons were well known in the hero and villain society. They were enigmatic figures capable of going either way down the path, depending on how and where their loyalty lied. Sesshoumaru, for example, was a popular figure among society. He had his own agency and everything that Inuyasha had taken over with a few others while Sesshoumaru spent his time overseeing her here.
His cold, stoic persona wasn't very different from how he'd been in the past. He'd warmed up overtime, however, but very few people actually were ones to witness that gentler side.
Because of the duality of demons, there were academies intended solely for demons. Humans were welcome, but many opted out of those options out of their own hesitation of the other species. There were no rules in place barring demons from attending academies outside of the ones made more catered to them, but they were surveyed closer than most were.
She was slowly eased from her thoughts by the pressure of a stare on her. Kagome blinked, a little puzzled, and glanced around until her eyes met a duo-colored pair. Without a second slipping by, a smile rose onto her face when her gaze landed on a boy with split red and white hair.
Oh, this was so totally ironic.
Despite their father's efforts, here they were in the same class. Fate sure does have such a divine sense of humor, and she loved it!
Her heart clenched at the sight of the burn that covered half of his face, surrounding his blue eye and dipping beneath the red section of his hair. In all of her memories she could account for of that time, he'd never had that mark. He must've gotten it after she was given away, and she wanted to know how, but… how was she supposed to ask something like that? It wasn't like they really knew each other so well anymore… especially not well enough to ask such personal questions.
She wanted to speak to him, but something held her back. It'd been almost ten years. The weight in her chest returned, and she refrained from letting her hands fist into the material of her uniform blazer.
His eyes were cold and indifferent, and she couldn't even begin to imagine what he'd gone through at the hands of their father. She'd always been so scared of him as a child.
The way he'd yell when he was angry. The way he'd snap at their mother whenever she tried to shield her from his wrath at her Quirkless uselessness to him. She'd plead to him to just leave her alone and that it wasn't her fault. That it wasn't anyone's fault. That no amount of anger directed towards her or towards anything else would change anything about the situation. That she was just a child.
She'd always do anything she could to fly under the radar whenever he was anywhere near her, but it often didn't work like she wished it had in her childhood days. When time went on, way past the normal timeframe for Quirk formation, he realized just how worthless she was to him and his plans. He gave her away without even letting her say goodbye to her siblings, giving her away as if she was a misbehaving dog he couldn't be bothered to train any longer.
Even with all he'd done, giving her away was the best thing he could've done for her. She didn't give him any credit that he did it for her sake. She knew he didn't. He was focused on his own drive, and tossing her away was the only way to live without his legacy stained by a Quirkless child.
Still, thinking about it…
Her expression shifted into a small frown, her eyes dropping to the floor and snapping away from Shoto's gaze. Shippo draped his arm over her shoulder, nuzzling into her cheek with his nose when he sensed her jumbled nerves. "Mother, are you okay?" His voice was kept low, nearly silent, as he asked that question. Kagome nodded, forcing a smile that looked out of place.
"I-... Yeah," she said after a moment. "Let's sit over here," she suggested then, tugging him along as he followed automatically behind her. She came to a halt at an empty pair of seats beside her brother's own. She met his gaze again, offering him a more serene smile. "These aren't taken yet, are they?" she asked.
That was an okay ice-breaker, wasn't it? Yes, yes. It had to be. If it wasn't, then she wasn't sure what she'd do. What if he didn't want anything to do with her? What if he resented her? What if-?
He glanced from her to the boy hovering over her shoulder, expression that same stoic one from before. The next second, he let his gaze return to her face as he nodded. "Go ahead," Shoto said and Kagome beamed at him as she sat in the one in front of him, and Shippo chose the one beside her own.
It was silent for a few moments, and Kagome struggled to find the words to say something. She didn't think it'd be so hard, but it was. They were like strangers, the more she thought about it.
"... do you even remember me?"
She jumped at hearing the murmured words from behind her, and she turned in her seat to look at him, wide-eyed. His hand was on the surface of his desk, tightly clenched as he looked down at it, a light of disdain settling in his gaze.
"I don't blame you if you don't," he said when he realized she was facing him.
He didn't blame her if she'd found a way to push the memories away. Kagome felt her expression falter and she moved before she could stop herself. She let her hand rest on top of his own, gently covering it with her warmth.
"... of course I do," she said after a moment. "I knew it was you at the entrance exam, but…" she felt the words get caught in her throat. "I… I didn't know what to say, even if I could've said something."
She felt his hand tighten beneath her own, and a frown tugged her lips down. She could feel the anger radiating off of him- not directed towards her, but it was there all the same. She could tell who it was directed at though, and she couldn't really find it in her to blame him any. He had every reason to hate their father, but… The idea of that hate consuming him made her heart hurt.
She didn't want him to feel that way. No one would be happy that way, least of all Shoto himself. A life with hate burning so passionately in your heart wasn't any type of life destined to be happy.
"It's kinda nice," she said, wanting to distract him from that anger coursing through him. "After all his efforts, fate decided not to let him have his way after all," she added with a faint laugh. "At least, I think it's nice."
Shoto picked his head up and met her gaze, a slight smile on his face for all of a second before it was gone. He then nodded, as if in agreement with her. "The old man won't be happy."
"I know, right?" Kagome laughed, and Shoto felt his heart begin to race when he saw the pure joy on her face. The way her nose crinkled as she laughed made his anger melt away, almost as much as the faint melodic tone surrounding just the two of them.
The pressure of a stare on him made him finally look away from Kagome's joyous expression, and his eyes met a pair of glaring aqua.
A question from earlier came racing back to the front of his mind.
Who the hell was this guy that'd literally been all over her?
"That's Shippo," Kagome said once she caught his gaze leveled on her kit beside her. "He's a… friend," she added with a faint hum. She reached and tugged on a lock of auburn hair, and his glare finally melted away. "And I told you to knock it off already," she huffed, a glare of her own appearing on her face as she sighed. "You're gonna make a bad impression, you know."
"I'll be nice," he sang in a promise as he gently swatted her hand away, and it was Shoto's turn to glare when Shippo took her hand in his own, as if staking a claim over her. "It's nice to meet you~" he said, swinging the arm that was connected to Kagome's own.
He refrained from gripping her other hand in a challenge as he nodded back at him. "Sure. You too."
He had no interest in making friends, but the fact Kagome was close to him was enough to make him pay closer attention to him. What was the deal between them anyway? They seemed so close, and he didn't like it. He looked away from the other boy.
He wasn't jealous. No, not at all. He was protective. There was a difference. A big one.
Shoto glanced back at Kagome, stilling himself when her hair seemed to rustle some.
"Huh…?"
Kagome blinked at his monotone sound of confusion, but before she could ask what was wrong, two sets of fuzzy ears popped up from her inky tresses. On cue, both cats that had been lazily napping in her hair leaped down from their perch, landing on the desk Kagome was facing as they let out twin yawns.
"Oh, so you two finally decided to wake up, huh?" Kagome asked, her voice affectionate as she tugged her hand away from Shoto's at last, doing the same to the one held firmly by Shippo, as she reached to pet the two kittens chirping happily in response. They were soon noticed by others in the room, and Kagome was instantly swarmed by people.
"Oh, no way they're so cute!" A pink-skinned girl exclaimed, her hands resting on her cheeks as she gushed over them. "You're not gonna get in trouble for bringing them, are you?" she asked, turning to Kagome as they scampered back up onto her shoulders. "Ah I hope not! They're super cute and I hope they can stay!"
Kagome smiled and nodded. "I was given permission for them to be here," she said, and the other girl's eyes lit up in excitement.
"That means we're gonna see more of them, aren't we?" she asked, and when Kagome nodded she let out an excited squeal. "Yay!"
The large group of people now surrounding them made them jolt and scamper away, and Kagome turned in her seat to follow them with her gaze. People made grabs at them as they bounced along them, pausing long enough for them to pet them a few times before moving onto the next person. Kagome covered her mouth with a hand and stifled a laugh as they went about the room, jumping on the arms and heads of everyone in a demand for attention.
Kagome got up from her seat as she went to gather the two roaming kittens back up. She stood up from where they'd landed by the door, only to jump when the door opened. A figure about to come in nearly ran into her, only to freeze before he could.
"Oh, sorry about that!" he exclaimed, burying a hand in slightly messy dark green hair. Kagome observed him for a moment, tilting her head to the side. His gaze roamed to the kittens in her arms, a blank expression on his face as he craned his head to the side much like she had. "C-Cats?"
Kagome glanced down at them and nodded. "Yup!" she exclaimed with a smile. "Cute, aren't they?"
She beamed at him, and she didn't pay much attention when his cheeks flushed red.
"S-Sure!" he responded, laughing nervously as she cooed over the kittens clutched to her chest. They weren't the only cute things there!
Shippo narrowed his eyes, resting his chin in his palm as he glared at the newest addition to the room. An unamused noise got lodged in his throat, and he ignored as the duo hair-colored boy close by glanced at him. He tapped the claws on his other hand on his desk for a moment before he rose from his seat, a possessive gleam entering aqua eyes as he came up behind Kagome silently, an intimidating air surrounding him. At once the green-haired boy tensed up, much to Shippo's smugness, as he wound his arms around Kagome's shoulders and nuzzled into her as if marking his territory.
"Geeze, Kagome-chan you make friends so easily," he sighed, feigning innocent admiration as he glanced at the small girl. An unamused glare lingered on the other boy as he turned away from the smiling girl. "I wanna be friends, too," he said then, flashing sharp canines in a forced smile.
Kagome rolled her eyes and lifted a hand to pat the side of his head to placate him some. "Remember what I said."
As another girl soon appeared on the other side of the door, Kagome turned to glare up at Shippo, allowing Eira and Enya up onto her shoulders. She set her hands on her hips as she pursed her lips into a pout, silently scolding Shippo as he smiled happily, his long, sleek tail waving slightly as Kagome kept going on and on.
"You're so jealous," she sighed, shaking her head and crossing her arms over her chest. "You're worse than Inuyasha was, I swear…" she added with a mild huff. "And he'd go get into fights with Koga whenever he so much as caught a whiff of him."
"That's a little much," Shippo muttered, finally looking down at his feet with a pout. "Comparing me to him…"
Kagome rolled her eyes, knowing that he was feigning offense. "It's not," she said with a snort. "It's true and you know it."
"Go elsewhere if you all wanna play and be friends."
A different aura caught her attention, and she glanced over her shoulder to peer between the bodies standing beside the open door. Her action seemed to cause them to do the same, because they soon ended up glancing out into the hallway and down at the figure laying in a sleeping bag on the floor.
"... eh?" Kagome tilted her head to the side, a confused expression appearing on her face. She tried to keep her confusion off her face, to no avail.
"This is the hero course." The man in the sleeping bag slowly stood up and unzipped the zipper on the front. No one made a noise as he stepped out of the yellow material. "Okay, that took eight seconds. Time is limited, and you kids aren't rational enough."
He was dressed mostly in black, save for the gray scarf wound around his neck. His hair was long and shaggy, black in color as well, and he had scruffy black facial hair on his chin and around his mouth. His eyes looked tired as he entered the room and looked around.
"I'm your homeroom teacher, Aizawa Shota," he said. "It's nice to meet all of you." Aizawa reached into his sleeping bag and tugged a uniform from it, holding it up for the room to see. "It might seem sudden, but you all are to change into your gym uniforms like this one," he said, waving the fabric for them all to see. "Once you've done that, you're to head out onto the field, got it?"
The rest of the room was silent as they got up to obey his order, none of them really questioning what he had asked of them.
They all met back up as one large group out on the filed just as Aizawa had requested, where he was now waiting for them. Once everyone was there, the brunette girl in the front rose her hand to get his attention.
"Um… what are we doing out here, Aizawa-sensei?" she asked.
"We're out here for a Quirk Assessment test," he responded, much to the surprise of many.
"Huh?" the brunette, Uraraka, tilted her head to the side. "But what about the entrance ceremony and orientation?"
"If you're aiming to be a hero, then you won't have time for leisurely events," he said. "U.A.'s selling point is its unrestricted school traditions," he continued as he turned to glance over his shoulder. "That's also how the teachers run their classes."
The group in front of him watched but didn't make a move to speak, and he pulled out a device.
"You kids have been doing these since junior high, right?" he asked. "Physical fitness exams where you weren't allowed to use your Quirks. The country still uses the averages from students not using their Quirks, it's just not rational," he said. "The Ministry of Education is procrastinating," Aizawa said, and he then turned to one of the figures in the group. "Bakugo, you finished top during the practical exam, didn't you?"
Kagome glanced at the boy he was talking to, blue eyes settling on the one with spiky blonde hair and red eyes who radiated a… less than friendly aura.
"Well, in junior high, what was your best result for the softball throw?" Aizawa asked.
"Sixty-seven meters," he responded after a second, and Aizawa nodded.
"Alright, try the throw with your Quirk," he said.
He motioned him over to a white pattern painted on the ground, having him stand in the middle of the circle as he handed off a softball with a band around its middle.
"You're free to do whatever you want, as long as you don't leave the circle," Aizawa said. "Hurry up. Give it all you've got."
Bakugo gripped the ball tight and stretched. "Fine," he said. He moved into a pitching stance while the rest watched on, and when he finally threw the ball, it flew from his hand with an explosive blast propelling it high into the air.
Kagome felt her eyes widen as she gripped Eira and Enya to her chest.
Woah… talk about explosive.
"Know your own maximum first," Aizawa said as the ball finally began its descent back down. He glanced at the device in his hand before turning to face the group standing amongst one another. "That's the most rational way to form the foundation of a hero," he said, holding up what he held in his hand to show the number that lurked on it in glowing blue numerals.
"Seven-hundred-and-five? That's insane."
"It looks like fun!"
Aizawa eyed the group, a mild glare on his face. "Looks fun, huh?" he repeated. "You've got three years to become a hero. Can you keep that attitude the whole time?" he questioned, and his expression darkened a second later. "Very well," he said. "Whoever comes in last in all eight tests will be deemed as someone without any potential," he said, "and the punishment will be expulsion."
"Huh?!"
Majority of the students around her were taken aback by the claim, not that she could blame them.
"We're free to do what we want about the circumstances of our students," Aizawa said, his expression shifting into a wry smile as he pushed a few locks of black hair out of his face. "Welcome to U.A.'s hero course!"
"Last place is gonna be expelled?" Uraraka spoke up, "but it's the first day of school!" She paused and shook her head. "Even if it wasn't," she continued, "that's way too unfair!"
Aizawa wasn't fazed by her outburst. "Natural disasters, big accidents, even dangerous villains," he said. "Calamities that can't be predicted- the world is covered in unfairness. Heroes are the ones to reverse those situations," he said. "If all you want to do after school is hang out and talk to friends, then too bad. U.A. will do everything it can to give you one hardship after another for the next three years." He folded his arms over his chest and eyed them. "Go beyond, plus ultra. You have to give it all you've got to overcome."
Nothing but intimidated silence answered him and he stepped back.
"Demonstrations over," Aizawa said. "Time to start the real tests."
Auroua-chan: finally got this one done! Kagome will be on good terms with her classmates rather quickly. (She'll also probably be the professional Bakugo wrangler-whether he likes it or not.)
Kagome's relationship with her other siblings will be mentioned/brought up in the upcoming chapters. They do care about her a lot, though, I will go ahead and say. And her family's reaction to learning Shippo is her (adopted) son something I'm really looking forward to doing, personally.
Eira and Enya will have their own sorts of training. Size wise, they're a little bit smaller than Kirara (both forms) because they're still young. They'll be able to use elemental-like attacks, as well.
Pairing talk:
Personally, I prefer x-over pairings, but I'm open to a bit of shipping/hinting otherwise between Kagome and a demon ally. I'd rather the endgame pairing be an x-over one.
I do have my own thoughts here and there on the pairing, but for now I won't worry about that. You all are free to offer suggestions because it'll likely be a little while before a pairing forms. Onto the suggestion of Shoto/Kagome; Personally, I'm not so sure about that one. I'm okay with him developing a sort of sister complex and a sort of overprotective nature, but I'm not sure with it going any further than that.
Anyway, that's it for now! Thank you all for reading and I hope you all enjoyed. Hopefully I caught all the errors before posting, but if not sorry.
Please remember to Review&Favorite&Follow, thank you!
Bye for now~
