Chapter Five
Kagome divided her classmates into separate groups to handle the two cats currently ignoring them and focusing on one another. As she did, she could feel Aizawa's stare fixed on her, as if he was observing how well she handled the task. Or if, by some reason, he decided it was time to step in if it came to be needed.
Once she'd got the groups settled, she set her hands on her hips and gave an affirmative nod. "Yeah, this should work just fine."
The number in each group differed, but she figured it'd be better this way. There were more people in the group to corral Eira than Enya's group, but it'd be fine. Eira would give up easier with more people on her case and she would eventually realize it wasn't worth the energy it'd cost just to avoid them. Enya would see more people as a challenge and happily butt heads against the entire class in a game of catch or tag.
"You guys rounding up Eira, surround her on all sides and she should give up after a couple of minutes or so," she said, glancing to her left where that group had been sectioned off into. "She might keep the game up for a bit, but she'll eventually give in. If anyone's brave enough, pet her between her shoulders and she'll calm down. Just gotta get close enough first," she remarked as an afterthought.
Once she'd given them some guidance on how to easily manage her, she glanced to her right, where the much smaller group was. She'd chosen them all for more precise reasons. She folded her arms over her chest and went to join up with them. "You guys and I are gonna handle Enya," she said.
Enya required more strategic actions to wind down. She saw a game and challenge in most everything, and she got too wound up most of the time. Never on purpose, but it was just in her nature. For lack of better reason, it was the hot-blooded nature she possessed.
"The one sure-fire way to calm Enya down is to exhaust her, so that's exactly what we're gonna do!" Kagome exclaimed with a smile appearing on her face. "Hope you guys have some decent stamina because you're gonna get a workout today!"
The tiny group consisted of four people, and that was with herself already included.
The first, besides herself, and probably best-fitted for the game of tag they'd be partaking in, was Tenya Iida. His Quirk would make things so much easier! They should have her all tired out in no time at all.
There was also Shippo. He'd help round the excitable cat up many-a-times already, and one more would be nothing to him. He was also a demon, so he could very easily handle getting tackled head-on by her, too, so there was that, at least.
The last member of their small group was Katsuki Bakugo- the hot-head with the rather explosive Quirk. She might not know a lot about him, but she got a good feeling that he, too, could withstand a head-on tackle from Enya just as well as Shippo could. Call it intuition, if you will.
"What should we do?"
Kagome blinked and pulled herself from her inner musings at hearing the voice from her side. She looked up, blue meeting a deeper hue of blue. With a shake of her head, she planted her hands firmly on her hips. "Right!" she exclaimed, meeting his gaze head-on before letting her eyes sweep over the other two. "We're gonna do just as I said: exhaust her."
She focused her attention on the fire elemental cat, who was not-so-subtly watching the rest of the class corral her icy companion, the ball firmly in her mouth as if it were a prize she'd won. The others were steadily, slowly but surely, managing to corral Eira- a few spare shrieks from different sides being heard every now and again when she swapped her direction of focus. They'd be just fine-
Kagome looked away from where Enya was and glanced back at the small group with her.
"Okay, so it should be quite simple with only a few of us," she began. "Iida," she said, calling for her taller classmate's attention, "your Quirk will be really handy here!" she said, a smile on her face, and she saw him nod as he realized what she was getting at.
"Then you mean to say I'll be the one chasing her and exhausting her out," he responded, and Kagome nodded.
"Bingo!" she exclaimed. "Enya's pretty fast- I know from personal experiences…" she mumbled the latter part to herself in a sigh. "She might not give up as easily as Eria does, but she's easy to tire out if you can keep pace with her. Normally it's easier to let her tire herself out, but that can take hours and we just don't have that much time," she said with a quick shrug.
"Seems easy enough," Iida responded with a nod of his head. "Then, you can leave that part to me!"
"Great!" Kagome clasped her hands together, beaming up at him as she did. "Just be careful not to get too close," she advised.
"Why not?" Iida responded, tone equal parts curious and cautious.
"She might change the game up," Shippo cut in, a smile on his face as he saddled up beside Iida, not-so-subtly interrupting his view of Kagome. "And then you'll be the mouse she's chasing down. So always allow room just in case that happens!"
"H-Huh?"
Kagome could sense his apprehension at Shippo's comment, and she laughed it off as she pushed her kit to the side. She flicked her hand in a gentle wave, shooing the auburn-haired boy off. "It's not so bad," she assured him. "She tackles me on a routine basis, you'll be just fine on the off-chance she marks you. She's big, but she's gentle against humans!"
She wasn't able to tell if her words managed to appease any of his worries as he nodded slowly.
"Very well," Iida said, letting his gaze swap to the cat in question. While she was bigger than any cat- or dog, for that matter- that he'd seen in life or in textbooks, there was no way she'd ever be permitted on school grounds should there ever be a chance she might actually pose a threat of any kind to any of the students or staff. That, and her confident words eased any remaining concern he might've felt.
These were her pets, after all. She knew them and their temperaments better than he did, so who was he to disagree or question her on them?
He met Kagome's stare with a smile. "I'm ready when you are, then," he said, and Kagome was all smiles again.
"Perfect!" she said, clasping her hands together and whirling around to face the other two.
She knew that Shippo would listen without complaint. She also knew that he already knew what to do, and she could tell that he was already set to jump into action. She let her gaze swap over to Bakugo, and she could tell, very easily, that she wouldn't be so lucky with him, as she was with the other two. She held back the sigh she felt desperate to slip out, and she continued on.
"That leaves us three to handle the rest!" she said. "Once she's close enough, tackle her and do your best to keep her pinned." She looked at Shippo and Bakugo with a gleaming smile. "If it's one of you two, just try and keep her down for me, and I'll handle the rest!"
"Tch…" Bakugo glared at her, not that it did much to dissuade her smile. She did narrow her eyes a fraction when she sensed the shift in his aura, though.
"Problem?" she asked, her tone cool and calm, but something in it seemed to pose a threat to a challenge. That something wasn't picked up on by him, however.
"Like I'm gonna take orders from you," he scoffed, and she arched a brow. "Shut up and stay out of the way."
She matched his glare with a saccharinely sweet smile and gleaming eyes, not backing down from the challenge he presented her with. He reminded her of Inuyasha when she first met him, except ten times worse. "Well, if it's so bad, then, please, be my guest. If you feel like you can handle her on her own, that'd be a lot easier for me, anyway." She paused with a soft hum, gripping her chin between her thumb and forefinger as she glanced away from the boy in front of her as she thought something over. "You'd make great bait!" she chirped as she returned her stare to match his own.
He narrowed his eyes as he stared her down, but she refused to back down even the tiniest bit. She remained calm and collected, an almost icy atmosphere surrounding her.
"Now, any more complaints, Bakugo?" she hummed softly.
"Tch…" he matched her saccharine smile with yet another glare that had zero impact on her. "Fine. I'm not gonna be any damn bait for some annoying cat," he grumbled under his breath.
"Great!" Kagome clasped her hands together and turned on her heel at the compliance of the boy whose personality was about as spiky as his hair. In the blink of an eye, the icy chill that had once been written all over her was gone, and her radiant self had returned full force. She pumped a fist into the air and motioned for them to follow her lead. "Let's go, team!"
With her encouragement, they went to corral the fire cat. For the most part, everything went as planned. Well, until Enya diverted from her path. She heard a disgruntled shout, and, when she turned on her heel, she nearly burst out laughing at the sight that greeted her.
Enya had exhausted herself, at least!
Kagome paused mid-step and let her gaze linger on the cat for a moment, or more so the boy she was now laying down on. A wry smile appeared on her face, and she had to actively work on stifling her giggles.
She had Bakugo flattened face down on the ground as she rested comfortably on top of him, occasionally nuzzling his head with a happy rumble. She could hear his angry grumbles in response, his hands pinned beneath him, which added to his clear frustration. Kagome closed the gap, Enya briefly looking up at her before yawning.
Enya was comfortable, by the looks of it. She stretched and rolled onto her side, nudging his head with her larger one and licking his spiky hair- making it stick up in an even odder angle. Kagome came to a halt in front of him as he worked on trying to pick his head up. She crouched to be closer to his level, resting her chin in the palm of her hand.
"Huh, look at that! Seems like Enya really likes you, Bakugo!" she sang cheerfully. Meanwhile, he was all glares as he stared her down, red meeting twinkling blue.
"Tch…!" He shifted again, and Enya let out a grumble, her large tails swatting the ground as she huffed, a puff of smoke coming from her nose. "Whatever idiot. Get your damn cat off of me already!"
She sighed and reached out to Enya's collar, where her golden bell jingled noisily. "Fine, fine." With a burst of fire from her fingertips, the large cat was suddenly replaced by her smaller form. She gathered her up in her arms and rubbed under her chin as she purred contently.
"Oh, so now you're gonna be a little angel, huh?" she grumbled sarcastically.
"Mew!"
Kagome rolled her eyes when Enya chirped a response. "... figures."
"Here you go!"
Kagome turned and spotted Eira being held out for her to take. The ice elemental cat had already taken on her smaller form and was dozing peacefully in the cupped hands of Uraraka. Kagome's eyes lit up, and she gratefully accepted the other cat.
"Thanks!" she exclaimed. "I knew you guys would have no trouble at all getting her under control!"
With the two rambunctious cats corralled up and taken care of, they were able to go back to what they'd been doing prior.
She regrouped with the rest, handing Enya and Eira back to Aizawa to keep them out of the way, as they restarted the ball throw.
"Alright, back to it," Aizawa stated as if the interruption had never even happened. "Uraraka, you're up."
The brunette she stood beside nodded and made her way over to the white-painted ground and took the offered ball from him. She threw it, but it made no sign of ever coming down. After waiting for what felt like forever, Aizawa showed her score, which was just the infinity symbol. Uraraka beamed, while others were left stunned.
As she left the pitch, she bounded over to where she stood in between Shippo and Iida. The auburn-haired fox had no qualms stepping to the side to let the brunette step up beside Kagome.
"Midoriya, you're up," Aizawa stated, and Kagome swapped her focus to the green-haired boy she'd spoken to only briefly earlier.
She hadn't made any note of it earlier, but she could definitely tell something about his Quirk was different compared to the rest. Normally Quirks were meshed into people's auras, from what she could tell, but his was different. It didn't seem as fully integrated as it should've been.
She folded her arms over her chest and eyed him closely.
What even was his Quirk? It seemed as if he hadn't even tried to use it once yet.
"Things don't look good for Midoriya if he continues on like this," Iida stated, and she looked up at him, giving a faint nod of agreement.
"He hasn't tried to use his Quirk once," Kagome commented, folding her arms over her chest with a sigh.
"Of course not!" Bakugo barked from the opposite side of Iida, and Kagome arched a brow as she peered around the taller boy to glance at the blonde. "He's a Quirkless small fry, you know!" he stated as he jutted a finger out to the boy in question. Confusion washed over her face.
Well, she could sense his Quirk, so clearly, he had one. She wasn't the only one skeptical of his comment.
"Quirkless?!" Iida glanced at him, his tone expressing the same confusion she seemed to feel. "Are you unaware of what he did during the entrance exam?"
Kagome looked away from them, returning her attention to the green-haired boy at the pitch. She could sense his nerves from here, and she felt a bit bad that she wasn't able to help him any. She hated the aura of people in distress, no matter how little she knew them. It was always such a heavy aura, and it was impossible to ignore.
As he prepped to throw the ball, she could sense a faint shift in his aura, and she craned her head to the side when he seemed to, finally, activate his Quirk. The strange burst of power burned her senses, and something about it felt somewhat familiar. She couldn't put her finger on it, however.
However, much to her surprise, as soon as he did, Aizawa did the same, seemingly using his own Quirk to nullify Midoriya's. The ball he'd just thrown fell to the ground not long after it left his hand, leaving him with nothing more than an average score.
Midoriya's confusion was apparent, and Kagome swapped her focus to their teacher, who took a few steps closer to the boy.
"I erased your Quirk," he stated. At once, all eyes were on him.
His hair was no longer in its flat position, seeming to stand on end as his white scarf was now flowing out around him like vines as he gripped it with one hand.
"The entrance exam wasn't rational enough," Aizawa stated, voice cold, "if a kid like you got accepted."
"Y-You erased my Quirk?" Midoriya repeated his words, and a second later, his eyes widened. "I know..! You're the erasure hero, Eraser Head! You can erase people's Quirks by just looking at them."
The others, much like herself, weren't all that familiar with the hero name, admittedly. To be fair, she also didn't dedicate a lot of time to paying attention to most heroes and the like. Given he was also an underground hero, it was obvious she wouldn't recognize the name.
She was unable to hear the words being exchanged, much like the others. Well, save for Shippo and his enhanced hearing. She could tell they weren't the most positive or, well, supportive based on the emotions they brought out in Midoriya. She could feel them as they impacted the boy's aura. It seemed as if Aizawa was done with what he was saying, and his scarf returned back to its prior position and freed Midoriya from its hold.
"I've returned your Quirk," he stated to the silent green-haired boy. "You have two turns for the ball throw, now hurry up and get it over with."
Aizawa went back to where he'd been before to observe the participation of the students, and things went on once again.
"It seems as if he was given some advice," Iida stated, and Kagome hummed. She wasn't so sure about that. Shippo's ears twitched a few times and he looked away, and that served as her confirmation.
"Probably just telling him he's expelled," Bakugo responded.
"You're worried about him, aren't you?" Kagome turned upon hearing the different voice, her eyes meeting sparkly purple. She was confused instantly. Of course, she recognized him as her classmate, but… Uraraka looked up at him when he set a hand on her shoulder. "Well," he continued, "as for me, I'm not."
Kagome looked at the sparkly blonde boy beside her, confusion appearing vaguely in her eyes. "Wait… when did you get there?" She hadn't even realized he'd come to join them until he spoke.
He smiled in response and winked, not really answering her question, and Kagome glanced at Uraraka, who shrugged, just as confused as she was.
Without another word, she returned her focus back to Midoriya, who had resumed his prior place at the pitch. She could sense many emotions plaguing his aura, but one in particular stuck out to her.
Determination.
It was potent, stronger than sorrowful or lamentable emotions, but it was much more preferable to her. There was no doubt that the words uttered by Aizawa had impacted him, but they also seemed to fuel his determination in most ways.
She, among others, watched as Midoriya performed the ball throw. The ball soared higher than it had before, fueled by a burst of power. She was stunned, and she could tell she wasn't the only one.
Her eyes strayed from the path the ball had sailed down and to the boy who'd thrown it. He trembled a bit, and she could see one of his fingers was injured- the bones inside it seemed to be shattered from the force of impact.
She felt her brows furrow.
At the very least, his Quirk seemed risky to utilize, if something like that was the aftermath of it.
"What the hell?! Deku, you bastard! Tell me what's going on!"
She was torn from her thoughts when Bakugo abruptly took off in a sprint towards Midoriya with a shout of anger. He didn't get close enough to really do anything to him, however.
Much like the green-haired boy had been earlier, Bakugo was suddenly entangled in the bandage-like scarf belonging to Aizawa.
At once, she recalled his prior statement of Midoriya being Quirkless, but she didn't exactly understand where his anger was coming from.
"Jeeze, you brats, don't make me use my Quirk over and over again," Aizawa stated, and all eyes went to him. "I have dry eye."
"Well, that seems like a major inconvenience," Kagome mumbled under her breath.
Aizawa retracted his scarf back to him and turned away from the two. "Enough wasting time. Next person up to the pitch. I don't care who goes."
With those words alone, the rest of them moved on. Once he came over to the rest of them, Kagome approached Midoriya, concern shining in her eyes.
"You're not hurt badly, are you?" she asked abruptly, ignoring how he jumped at her sudden closeness. She refrained from reaching for his hand, unless he offered it out to her. "If you are, I'm pretty skilled in healing..." she trailed off in a softer tone.
"I-I'm fine!" Midoriya responded, and she darted her gaze up from his injured finger and to his face. She looked at him closely, noting the way he tensed up.
"Are you sure?" She frowned. "Your face is a little red, too…"
"Y-Yep!" Midoriya exclaimed, waving his uninjured hand. "N-No need to worry at all!"
Kagome sighed and shrugged. "Well, if you're sure, I'll drop it for now," she said.
She could tell that he was in pain, but she'd respect his words and give him the benefit of the doubt. If he didn't want her to heal him, then there wasn't much she could do to convince him otherwise.
She regrouped up with Shippo as the tests continued.
They went through the remaining tests without another incident. Soon enough, they were done, and everyone was grouped up again as they waited for the scores and final ranking.
"The total is the marks you got from each test," Aizawa stated. "It's a waste of time to verbally explain, so I'll show you the results all at once." In his hand, he held a device. He pressed a button on it, and the results were projected in a hologram. "The one with the lowest score will be expelled."
As everyone took in their scores, a heavy silence fell over the area with the remainder of what would happen to the person unfortunate enough to land in last place. After a few moments, Aizawa spoke up again, putting the device in his hand back into his pocket as he did so.
"One last thing," he said. "I was lying about the expulsion."
Silence hovered in the air, and Kagome could feel the thick aura of disbelief that flooded the group she stood within. At the same time, Aizawa smiled at them all while the other students were stunned by the sudden information.
"It was just some rational deception to help you all draw out the upper limits of your Quirks."
"What?!"
Most of the students gathered in front of him were in shock, but he didn't seem to pay it any mind. He turned and began walking away.
"With that, we're done here," he said. "There are some handouts with the curriculum and such inside the classroom. Be sure to look at them once you get back."
Kagome sighed and shook her head. After the end of the tests, Eira and Enya had been given back to her. They were still tired, and they slept peacefully on her shoulders.
One hell of a first day, at least.
Her hand was abruptly swiped by Shippo, who beamed down at her. "Let's go~!"
"A-Ah…" Kagome stumbled a bit as he started to lead her away, leaving no room for anyone else to approach her. She smiled and caught herself, and she settled for walking beside him. "Right!"
Auroua-chan: This one took a lot longer than I wanted it to. I had a bit of writer's block in one section, so I worked around that part and then went back to the part I was struggling on.
Onto the topic of pairing/s:
I haven't put much thought into side pairings, tbh. Shoto/Momo is one I'll likely do. I'm open to others, too, but I haven't put much time into thinking about those options.
Kagome's Hero Costume:
I think I've mostly settled on a design for it finally. It'll be a mix between traditional miko attire and a demon slayer's uniform, with some modern additions to it. She will also have the armor and mask to complete it. Not sure the primary colors of it yet, though. It'll also have the fire-rat robe incorporated into it. It might have some form of a mokomoko incorporated, too, but I haven't decided on that part yet. I'll have it all decided on soon, the first version of it, at least. It's possible it might change later, too.
Other stuff:
Kagome will be well known in the demon community due to her past and there will be demons pulled to her that are both good and bad. Humans don't know about her time-hopping adventures, but demons do.
Endeavor won't be liked by her demon family, but the rest of her bio family won't face the same level of hostility and dislike as he will. At least, not for long/permanently. It'll take a lot for their opinions of and behavior towards Endeavor to change, however, and that's only if Kagome does anything to try and convince them. If she were to not say/do anything in his favor, they simply won't form any tolerance of him. (Even if he were to do something good for her, by chance. To them, nothing he does/will do will ever make amends for his past actions.) Even then, they each will behave differently towards him in general.
I meant to bring this up earlier, but one of the [main] characters in this story will be a descendant of Sango and Miroku's lineage.
Anyway, that's it for now! Thank you all for reading, and I hope you all enjoyed! Hopefully I caught all the errors before posting, but if not sorry.
Please remember to Reivew&Favorite&Follow, thank you!
Bye for now~
