Chapter Sixteen

"I'm home!"

The sound of her mother's voice coming from downstairs reached her up in her room. Kagome blinked and picked her head up, turning her attention away from the textbook she'd been focused on moments ago.

Following Dabi's exit from the shrine, Kagome had gone on with her day. She finished up with the needed chores before swapping over to reviewing material from class.

"Kagome?"

At the sound of her name, Kagome rose from her chair and exited her room, heading downstairs to find her mother in the kitchen. She tilted her head to the side as she stepped into the room. "Is everything okay?" she asked as Kun-Loon turned towards her. As she did, Kagome didn't miss the relieved smile that appeared on her face.

"Everything's fine," she responded as she came over to where she stood. "I just…" She paused and sighed, a worried light entering her eyes. "That whole ordeal at UA yesterday is all over the news," she said. "You can't go anywhere without hearing about it, it seems."

Kagome nodded, knowing exactly what she meant. When she was out earlier, she did her best to tune out all the talk of it. "Yeah," she mused, "no kidding…"

"I know you said you're okay," Kun-Loon began, meeting her gaze with her worried brown eyes. "But…- Are you sure?" she asked. "I know you're strong and you can handle yourself, but still…-" her rambling fell short as she looked down at her feet.

"Mama," Kagome said, a small smile flashing across her face. "I'm okay," she said. "I promise, I'm just fine." Kagome paused and forced a laugh- one that she hoped she didn't see through. "I mean…" she trailed off as she continued to ramble. "I've fought demons and worse," she said.

"I know…" Kun-Loon sighed, and Kagome could tell she believed her. She shook her head and let her worried frown get replaced by a warm smile. "I suppose I just get worried sometimes," she said then with a light laugh. "Sometimes I forget that you've grown so strong already."

Unable to help it, Kagome felt her forced smile turn genuine at her mother's claim. She soon left the kitchen and returned back to her room, gently closing the door behind her as she went. As the silence of her room settled around her, she leaned against the door and sighed.

Even now, the situation with Shigaraki had yet to leave her brain. She hadn't shared with anyone his words or claims. She knew that, if she did, then it would only cause alarm to rise. His obsession was hard to miss and it left a foul taste in her mouth.

Kagome pushed herself away from the door and made her way back to her desk, sinking down in her chair as she swapped her focus back to studying, only to find she had no luck in concentrating. She sat there for a few minutes, idly staring at the page before she all but pushed herself back up.

It was still early in the day, she noted, and going for a run didn't sound like a bad idea.

She slammed the book closed to come back to later and changed out of the clothes she wore, opting to put on something more suited for exercise. She changed into one of the outfits she wore when sparring against Sesshoumaru and left the room.

"I'm heading out for a little while!" Kagome called out as she headed to the front door. She heard her mother's answering confirmation, waiting for it before she headed out the door. Hot on her tail were Eira and Enya.

Her run took her into the city. She had a usual route, and she didn't bother to diverge from it. A part of her kept a look out for the man from before as she wondered if he might be out watching her again, but, if he was, she never caught sight of him this time.

Well, while she never caught sight of him, she did end up encountering a different familiar figure. She came to a halt much like he did, a soft smile on her face.

"Fancy meeting you like this," she remarked, setting a hand on her hip as her eyes met a pair of green ones. A second or two later, he matched it with a similar one.

"I guess we must've had the same idea," Midoriya responded. Kagome shrugged and stepped to the side to be sure she was out of the way.

"Sure seems that way," she said. She paused and looked down at the ground between them with a wry laugh. "I thought a run would help me feel better, but I'm not sure it's exactly having the effect I wanted," she admitted.

Midoriya nodded as he looked at her expression. He'd wager that she knew he watched her, but she didn't react. "You've been dwelling on the attack at the USJ," he stated. He didn't feel the need to ask it as a question. He knew he was right when she nodded.

"Yeah…" she sighed. He didn't miss the way her usually bright eyes darkened a bit, and he felt his frown deepen.

"But that's not all it is, is it?" he asked then. He knew he'd hit the mark when he spotted the way her neat brows furrowed. At the same time, one of her hands tightened at her side.

"Shigaraki," she spoke the single name, and Midoriya instantly got the depth of her concern. "I dunno," she sighed as she brought her arms up to fold them over her chest. "It just feels weird to have someone like that so interested in me."

"I don't blame you for feeling that way," Midoriya responded softly. He remembered perfectly clear how focused the villain had been on her. He felt unsettled for her, and he couldn't even begin to imagine the way it made her feel. She was strong, he'd noticed, but even she had her limits.

"I don't want to cause worry," she said then, "so I haven't told anyone about it all," she admitted. "Not my mom, and I don't think that Sesshoumaru even knows yet." If he did, it hadn't come from her. She sighed and shook her head. "Ironically this is probably the least of my concerns," she mumbled then. Her voice had been quiet, and he wasn't sure if she'd even meant to say those words out loud, but he wasn't able to ignore them.

"What do you mean?"

Kagome blinked at the question, and it was only then that she seemed to realize that she'd vocalized those words. "I…-" she trailed off, expression contorting as she tried to come up with a response. He wasn't able to ignore how cute she looked when she scrambled for an answer- but he quickly brushed that thought away. "Oh," she paused and looked away with a shrug, "you know… never mind," she said. "I didn't mean to say that out loud," she admitted with a sigh. "I guess I have a habit of rambling."

Midoriya smiled and shook his head. "It's okay," he assured. Kagome looked back at him with a much smaller smile as he brushed her prior words away. "So you're Sesshoumaru-sensei's student outside of school, too, right?" he asked. Kagome quickly jumped on the change of topic.

"Yeah!" she exclaimed as she nodded. "He's been training me for a while now."

"Is he any different outside of school?" he asked, and Kagome laughed.

"A little bit," she admitted. "We've only had a few classes with him at school," she said, "but I'm far ahead from what he's teaching us currently. That's why he usually uses me for demonstrations. I can show everyone what we should do in response to his tactics."

Opposed to staying there standing around, they'd started walking as they continued their conversation. Kagome welcomed the distraction from her prior worries with open arms.

The following day found her in the familiar classroom with the rest of her classmates. She was quiet as she listened to the speculation about who might fill in for Aizawa, considering the man was supposed to be out due to his injuries. All conversation and speculation about it died, however, when the door opened and in walked Aizawa- face covered in bandages. Not only that, but both his arms were in slings and he moved with an obvious limp.

At once, she was taken aback. She wasn't the only one, either. Despite being his student, she couldn't help but be concerned about his well-being. Surely he could've taken at least one more day off.

"Aizawa-sensei…" Kagome frowned, trailing off. "Are you sure you're… um… well enough to be in class?" she questioned.

"Does this mean you're all right?" Iida asked next. Uraraka shook her head.

"If you can call that all right," she shakily said as he limped his way to his desk. Eira and Enya were quick to sit up on his desk to examine him. Kagome nodded, finding herself in agreement with her observation.

Either way, she certainly admired him for his strength and willpower. It definitely was something.

"My well-being doesn't matter," Aizawa responded as he paused at his desk. He turned to face them all, but his face was hard to see under the bandages. "More importantly, the fight is not over yet."

His comment caused her to sit up straighter. She was keen to note she was far from the only one to do so. Nothing seemed off in the air, but that didn't mean anything necessarily… His following words didn't soothe her as much as they did the rest of the room, however.

"The UA sports festival is coming up," Aizawa clarified. There was a collective sigh of relief from many of them, and conversion stirred up before dying back down.

"Wait," Jiro said as the rest of the room quieted down, "is it even okay to hold the sports festival so soon after what happened?" she asked.

"Right," Ojiro chimed in, turning back to Aizawa. "What if they try to attack us again or something…?"

"Apparently, they think of it as UA showing that our crisis management system is solid as a rock by holding the event," Aizara explained. "Security will also be strengthened to five times that of the prior years," he continued. "Above all, our sports festival is a huge chance. It's not an event to be canceled due to a few villains."

"B-but that's a good reason, isn't it?" Mineta responded. "I-It's just a sports festival."

"Our sports festival is one of Japan's biggest events," Aizawa said. "In the past, the Olympics were called a festival of sports, and the whole country was crazy about them. As you know, with reductions in scale and population, they're now a shell of their former glory," he reminded. "And now, for Japan, what has taken the place of those Olympics is the UA sports festival."

"Not only that, but all the top heroes across the country will be watching and observing for scouting purposes," Momo said.

"Joining a famous hero agency will get you more experience and popularity. Time is limited," Aizawa continued. "If you expect to go pro, then the path to your future will open up at this event," he said. "One chance a year, a total of just three chances…- No aspiring heroes can afford to miss this event," Aizawa reminded them all. "If you understand that, then don't slack off on your preparations!

"Yes Sir!" The response was instant, and Aizawa sighed.

"Good," he responded. "Homeroom is dismissed."

Come time for lunch, the upcoming sports festival was all anyone in the room was speaking about. They all felt so lively and excited about it, but, as for her…

While it wasn't fighting and trying to survive against villains, it felt just as imposing to her. She knew what it was very well- having watched it on TV before in prior years. It wasn't villains but…

Her father's face flared to life in her mind and she flinched.

There was no way he wouldn't be observing the sports festival, and there was no way she could stay out of his sight during it. It was the moment she'd been dreading, and there was no way to ignore it now.

"Are you okay?"

Kagome was pulled from her thoughts by a voice behind her, and she turned in her seat. Her brother looked at her, and she could see the concern lurking in his eyes. She frowned and looked down.

"Yeah…" she responded, even though she felt far from it.

She recalled Sesshoumaru's advice from before, but it didn't seem to have as big of an impact on her this time.

"Kagome-chan?" Shippo frowned as he looked her over. Kagome shook her head and forced a smile to replace her worried look.

"I'm okay," she said then, pushing herself up from her desk. "I might not join you guys for lunch," she said as she grabbed her bag. "I just remembered, I had a few things I needed to talk to Sesshoumaru about." She looked between the two before moving away. "I'll see you guys back in class!"

Shippo huffed and relented, not bothering to tag along with her- which took Todoroki by surprise. That's what he normally does, at least.

"Sesshoumaru, do you mind if I join you for lunch?" Kagome asked as she hovered by the door to the room he was in. He didn't look surprised by her presence, and he welcomed her to join him. She walked into the room and let the door close behind her.

"What's bothering you?" he asked, but she could tell he didn't need to. Still, he did it to give her a reason to speak. Kagome sighed and shook her head.

"I just…" she leaned against the desk and folded her arms over her chest. "I really don't want to sit and listen to everyone talk about the sports festival," she admitted. "I can't exactly find myself as excited as everyone else is," she continued. "He'll be there to spectate it, I just know he will."

Sesshoumaru was well aware of who she meant. "I see," he responded. Kagome nodded.

"I was expecting it," she added. "I just wish that meant I was ready," she whispered to herself.

"It's not strength you lack," Sesshoumaru remarked, and she shook her head.

"No, it's not," she agreed. "It's just…" She fell silent and sighed. The thought of having to be before him again made her feel so uneasy. Not just that, but if he tried to approach her, she wasn't sure how she might react to being so close to him physically. She couldn't even stand seeing him on the TV.

"I can't help but think you're looking at this situation from the wrong side," Sesshoumaru began, pulling her out of her thoughts. Kagome looked up to meet his gaze. "After all, is this not your chance to show off?" he questioned. "Since he will be present, make an impact that he cannot ignore. Prove him wrong about you, if that's what you need," he stated.

"I know…"

"And, should he dare approach you- my pupil," Sesshoumaru continued, golden eyes narrowing and a cold smirk appearing on his face, "I'll be inclined to speak to him on your behalf."

Kagome let her attention linger on his face as he said those words. A second passed before a smile broke across her face and she nodded.

"Right," she said after a moment's pause.

She didn't even understand why she'd been so nervous anymore. There was nothing he could do to harm her anymore. If anything, the places had flipped entirely.

"I shouldn't worry about him," she eventually said. "I need to be more focused on standing out to the rest of the heroes watching."

Sesshoumaru nodded. "A feat that should be simple for you, certainly."

Her chest felt warm at the praise.

"... right!"

At the end of the day, when it came to leaving the classroom, they all were met by a large crowd gathered outside the door to the room. She wasn't the only one to be taken aback by the sudden appearance of people crowding the exit.

"What business do you have with 1A?" Iida asked the formed crowd. Kagome frowned and looked up at him.

"Come on," she sighed, "it feels like I'm in a zoo with all you guys staring like this…" Enya let out an agitated growl as she sat up on her shoulder. Briefly, Kagome pondered the harm of letting her scare them off, but she ultimately decided against the urge.

"We can't even get out!" Mineta shouted.

"It's simple, small fry. We're the ones who survived the villain's attack," Bakugo said, sounding disinterested entirely. "They're scouting out the enemy," he said as he made his way to the door. "They probably wanna check us out before the sports festival," he stated as he paused before the doorway. "There's no point in doing stuff like that," he remarked. "Out of the way, Extras!"

"Wow," Kagome sighed at his comment, shaking her head. "And to think that up until the end of your little speech, you could've almost made a decent point," she remarked flatly.

"Stop calling people extras just because you don't know them!" Iida shouted in agreement with her.

"I came to see what the famous class 1A was like," a voice louder than the rest cut through the crowd. Kagome looked for the source, but she didn't need to search long. A figure taller than a lot of the others made his way to the front of the crowd that blocked the doorway. "You seem pretty arrogant," he continued as he came to a halt. "Don't tell me all the students in the hero course are like that."

Kagome cut her eyes at Bakugo before she scoffed. "Don't be ridiculous," she remarked. He, along with Bakugo, looked at her. She had no problems ignoring the explosive blonde as she let her gaze remain fixed on the unfamiliar boy, holding his stare easily. His hair, a vibrant purple, was styled in a spiky manner. His eyes were a color close to his hair, and he had dark circles beneath them. "Bakugo here is just a special case of arrogant," she stated flatly as she jutted a thumb in his direction.

"You little…-!"

She ignored him and tuned out his to-be threat easily as she kept her attention level on the new face. A few seconds passed before he sighed and rubbed the back of his head.

"Seeing something like that makes me disillusioned," he said in response. "There are quite a few people who enrolled in general studies or another course because they didn't make it into the hero course," he remarked, shifting his attention to the blonde. "Were you aware of that?" he asked. "The school has left those of us a chance," he continued. "Depending on the results of the sports festival, they'll consider our transfer into the hero course, just as they might transfer people out."

His comment made a few of them nervous, and Kagome glanced back at the room from the corner of her eye. Either way, she didn't react, and she soon swapped her focus back to the purple-haired boy.

"Scouting out the enemy?" he repeated Bakugo's prior accusation with narrowed eyes. "I, at least, came to say that it doesn't matter if you're in the hero course. If you get carried away, I'll sweep your feet out from under you," he stated. "I came with a declaration of war."

Kagome felt a small smile flash across her face. "Well, you're quite bold, aren't you?" she mused softly.

"Tch…"

Kagome glanced back at Bakugo from the corner of her eyes at his annoyed scoff. It was a stalemate before the silence was broken by a different voice coming from the crowd.

"Hey, hey!"

She nearly jumped from the volume of the shout. Eira and Enya's fur bristled in response.

A boy with silver hair was the source of the voice. "I'm from class B next door! I heard you fought the villains, so I came to hear 'bout it! Don't get so full of yourself!" he continued, never once ceasing in his shouting. "If you bark too much, it'll be embarrassing for you durin' the real fight!"

Bakugo wasn't fazed by him in the slightest. Instead, he turned and left the room, using the path that'd been cleared out.

"Hey! You ignorin' me, bastard?!" he continued to shout, but he still didn't react.

"Hey, Bakugo!" Kirishima shouted at him as he left. "What do you think you're doing? What're you gonna do about all this? It's your fault everyone's hating on us!"

"It doesn't matter," Bakugo responded, pausing and glancing over his shoulder.

"Huh?!"

"It doesn't matter as long as you rise to the top," he said as he left. Kagome sighed and shook her head after he was gone.

"Don't you have training with Sesshoumaru?" Shippo asked, coming up on her side and draping an arm over her shoulders. When he came over to her, the cats anticipated his action and moved from her shoulders, settling into her folded arms. She nodded, recalling that he'd be coming to the shrine after class that day.

"You're right," she responded. "I need to be on my way."

With those words, she turned and followed the path Bakugo had taken. Shippo didn't follow, but she knew he wouldn't. He would show up at the shrine with Sesshoumaru a bit later. She didn't pause as she walked by the new figure that'd held her attention not too long ago, but she did lift her gaze to meet his own more time.

"Give it your all," she hummed as she walked by him. "Good luck~"

She didn't miss the way he looked at her and at the cats she carried, and she gave a bright smile before walking by him entirely.

Auroua-chan: I've been waiting for the start of this! I'm so excited for the next chapter, too!

Shinso is here, and Kagome is a little interested in him, to say the least. She likes his determination, at least. I can't wait for them to interact more. If they don't end up together, at least they'll be close friends eventually. (even if he doesn't wanna make friends- she has her ways.) She'll, at the very least, be super encouraging to him.

There's no telling how Endeavor will react to seeing Kagome. He's not aware that she's even at UA because there's no way that Shoto would ever share that information with him. I feel like it's obvious how he'll be… He's Endeavor, after all.

Anyway, that's it for now! Thank you all for reading, and I hope you all enjoyed. Hopefully I caught all the errors before posting, but if not sorry.

Please remember to review&favorite&follow, thank you!

Bye for now~
