Note: This chapter is mostly filled with canon, but there are also a lot of additions. If you don't want to read it, then just read near the end with Glynda.
Ruby is wearing a large backpack as she enters the auditorium with other students. She puts it next to other students' luggage before rejoining her team, standing before Team JNPR.
In the stand, Glynda said, "Quiet! Quiet, please. Professor Ozpin would like to share a few words before we begin."
Glynda stepped back, and Ozpin made a long and arduous speech. He then steps away as the students file out of the amphitheater.
Ruby was looking for a mission to continue their escapades of searching for the White Fang. She said, "This is perfect! All we have to do is shadow a Huntsman working in the southeast!"
Yang liked Ruby's idea and said, "Yeah! We'll follow them around by day and give them the slip by night!"
Weiss looked at the screen with the mission and said, "Let's check "search and destroy"!"
They started looking for missions in the southeast. It was then that Jaune and the rest of JNPR arrived.
Jaune saw Ruby and the others acting suspiciously. He asked, "What are you guys doing?"
Ruby panicked and said, "N-Nothing suspicious!"
Jaune sighed and said, "You saying that makes me believe you are doing something suspicious."
Ruby pouted and said, "There is nothing suspicious about saying nothing suspicious! Besides, we are only looking for a mission in the southeast. See, nothing suspicious. Here we go! Quadrant 5 needs Grimm cleared out!"
Blake heard what Ruby said. So she replied, "Well, it's in the southeast!"
Yang agreed with Blake, "Sounds perfect!"
Jaune then asked, "What's in the southeast, and why are you concentrating on finding a mission there?"
Ruby and her team flinched. And she said, "Pfft! Come on, Jaune. We think that the southeast is a perfect place to have our first mission. Nothing more, nothing less!"
Jaune didn't believe her.
Ruby selects the mission and types in her team name. However, the screen says that the first years are prohibited from taking this mission.
Weiss was peeved and said, "Wonderful!"
Blake looked at her team and said, "Any other ideas?"
Ruby thought of something absurd from what happened earlier and said, "We mail ourselves there!"
"Well, that's one option," said someone.
They all looked at who spoke and saw Ozpin. He continued, "Unfortunately, we have determined that the concentration of Grimm in that particular region is too extreme for first-year students. It seems rather popular, but I have a sneaking suspicion that you four will make your way there no matter what job you choose.."
Weiss, Blake, and Yang glare at Ruby, who nervously rubs her head. As for Jaune and his team, they wanted to know what was so important that they wanted to go to the southeast.
Ruby, with bated breath, said, "Whatever makes you say that?"
Ozpin did not answer her question and said, "I am still curious about how you ended up at the docks last semester. Could you please tell me how you found out about a hideout in the southeast? Additionally, I am intrigued by the reports of robots and rose petals at a dance club some time ago."
Ruby wanted to say something, but the only thing that came out was, "Um... well..."
Ozpin, then looked at each one of them, including JNPR, and said, "I don't think I'll ever find the precise answers I seek. So, why don't we bend the rules instead of waiting for them to be broken?"
Ozpin selects some things on his scroll, and the hologram screen makes a noise.
Ruby was happy and told Ozpin, "We won't disappoint you. Thank you, professor."
Ozpin raised his hands and said, "Do not thank me yet. I do have a condition if you want to head to this mission. This will be a joint-team mission, which you will go with team JNPR."
Jaune was surprised. They already had a mission assigned. Hence, he said, "Sir, we already have a mission assigned to us."
Ozpin smiled at Jaune and said, "That can be easily arranged. Go on; the Huntsman you'll all be shadowing awaits you in bullhead port. Don't want to keep him waiting now, do you?"
As Ozpin suggested, JNPR and Ruby headed to the port, waiting for their Huntsman babysitter. There, they met Velvet and her team.
Jaune approached her and asked, "Velvet? Is everything okay? You don't look so good. Did anything happen?"
Velvet blushed and said, "I'm fine. Yatsu had my back the entire time. Although, I feel sore since we have been camping in the wilderness."
Jaune pretended to take something out of his power and gave it to Velvet, saying, "Take this. It'll help you."
Velvet looked at what Jaune gave her: some herb. She didn't know what to do. So, she asked, "Uhm…Am I supposed to boil this or something?".
Jaune chuckled a bit. Then he explained, "No, you can just eat it. Go on, give it a try."
Velvet was a bit apprehensive, but it was given to her by Jaune. He wouldn't try poisoning; she was sure of it. So, she ate it. The moment it entered her mouth, all her fatigue, the soreness of her body, and her sleepiness were gone. And her Aura, it was back to full!
Velvet was thinking, 'What was that? My Aura is back to 100%. But there is nothing…' she went wide-eyed as she realized the value of what Jaune gave her. There was nothing in this world that could help replenish Aura. It can only be done naturally. Something like that would be sought after and valued at who knows how much Lien.
Velvet trembled, "J-Jaune, why would you give me something that valuable?"
Jaune then rubbed Velvet's head, "Why not? I thought you needed it, so I gave it to you. Besides, I have more of them."
Jaune gave Velvet not the Full Heal potion but the Complete Recovery Herb, something more valuable. The Full Heal potion can only heal injuries, not exhaustion or disease, but the Complete Recovery Herb could do much more.
[Complete Recovery Herb: Consuming this herb can cure all kinds of wounds and diseases, even if you are missing limbs or blinded. In addition, the herb can also function to restore magical power. This herb exceeds any legendary-class herb]
Jaune then remembered something. He said to Velvet, "Hey, Vel. I thought your mission was supposed to end a week ago. Did something happen?"
Velvet shook her head. She replied, "Nothing happened. It was just ... there were just so many... Oh, but don't worry. First-years are just shadowing Huntsmen, so you should be fine. Nothing to worry about."
Jaune then laughed. He joked, "With team RWBY? We might end up fighting White Fang."
Velvet chuckled as well. The chances of that are slim. She said, "No matter how bad your luck is, I don't think the White Fang would be a problem during your mission."
Ruby visibly sweat, and she said, "R-Right."
Velvet saw that her teammates were calling for her. So, she said, "I should go. Be safe, okay?"
Jaune gave another head pat to Velvet and said, "I'll be fine. I'll see you when I get back. JNPR and RWBY are planning a celebration party for our first mission success."
Velvet nodded and said, "I'll be there."
It took another few minutes of waiting before Jaune and the others heard a voice call to them.
"Why, hello, girls and Jaune! Who's ready to fight for their lives?" said the voice.
Everyone looked at the voice, and it was Dr. Oobleck!
Jaune raised an eyebrow and said, "Hey! Doc, Why did you single me out? You know Ren is a man as well, right?"
Oobleck looked at Jaune and then at Ren. He realized that Jaune did not know Ren was a girl. That was interesting. He was not going to spoil the surprise now, would he?
Oobleck cleared his throat and said, "Why, yes, of course. I apologize for that. Now! Why don't we all get ready to board the bullhead?"
Everyone took their bags, and they were heading to the bullhead when Oobleck spoke, "I'm afraid those bags won't be necessary, girls and Jaune, seeing as you've opted to shadow a Huntsman on what is now essentially a reconnaissance mission. We will not establish a single base of operations; rather, we will traverse several miles of hazardous wasteland and make camp in any defendable locations we may stumble upon. I packed our essentials, plotted our air course, and readied the airship."
Everyone dropped their bags except for Ruby. As for Jaune, he didn't have a bag in the first place. He has everything he needs to be stored in the item box. If anyone asks how he could take things out of nowhere, he can claim it's his semblance.
"Come now, children; according to my schedule, we are already three minutes behind schedule!" said Oobleck as he made haste to the bullhead.
Ruby adjusted the bag on her back and said, "Well, all right, then! It looks like we're going to save the world with Doctor Oobleck! Okay, when you say it out loud, it sounds worse."
Jaune then playfully punched Ruby on her shoulder and said, "Cheer up, crater face. It doesn't matter who we are shadowing. This is still our first mission. Our first big adventure!"
Ruby smiled. She then said, "Thanks Jaune. You always know how to cheer me up."
Jaune said nothing and offered her a warm smile, making Ruby's heart skip a beat.
While on the bullhead headed to Mt Glenn, everyone saw its ruins. It reminded Jaune of what he saw in the Dreamscape. I reminded him of what he was striving to prevent.
Pyrrha saw the ruins and gasped. She said, "This is horrible. Seeing this place and reading about it is different. Here, you can feel the dread and the destruction that happened."
Lei looked down from the bullhead and said, "This place reminds me…"
She could not finish her words as the memory was too painful. But Nora was there to hold her hands, and she said to him, "Hey, everything will be okay. Maybe one day we can return there and finish the job."
Lei nodded and wiped a tear that formed in her eye. This is why she wanted to get stronger. She wanted to liberate her village of Kuroyuri from that abominable Grimm.
Oobleck saw everyone looking at the ruins below them and said, "The southeast quadrant outside of Vale is home to wild forests and deep caves, but it is also the location of one of the kingdom's greatest failures! Mt Glenn! It was to be a city that would bring hope as we show that we can reclaim the lad lost to the Grimm, but now it stands abandoned as a dark reminder."
Blake looking around using her White Fang teaching, said, "And it happens to be a great hideout."
"Precisely!" said an overenthusiastic doctor.
The airship hovers over a ruined street as Yang, Blake, Oobleck, Weiss, and Ruby disembark with weapons drawn. The doctor holds a coffee canister as the ship flies away from the destruction.
Oobleck calls the attention of RWBY and JNPR and says their first mission as Huntsman and Huntresses has begun. From now on, they need to do precisely as he says. The girls nod, but he startles Ruby by reminding her to leave all her bags back at school.
Ruby did not want to do that. She told him, "But, uh, you hadn't told us to listen yet. So I didn't."
Oobleck thought, 'She's not wrong...' before saying, "Very well, Ruby; leave your bag here. We can pick it up upon our return."
Ruby didn't want to, and Oobleck saw that.
With a stern voice, Oobleck said, "Young lady, what in the world could you possibly have in that bag that could be so important to bring it with..."
He could not complete his words as a dog's head popped out of the bag. He thought, 'Oh, that's why she didn't want to leave it. But a dog?'
Ruby, whispering to her dog, said, "Get back in the bag."
But Zwei merely barks in response.
Oobleck said while thinking, "We're here to investigate an abandoned urban jungle teeming with death and hostility, and you brought... a dog?" Genius! Canines are historically known for their perceptive nose and heightened sense of sound, making them excellent companions for a hunt like ours!
Ruby skipped to Jaune and said, "He called me a genius!"
Jaune patted Ruby's head in delight and said, "That he did, Ruby."
Weiss and Yang facepalm at their grinning leader, and they and Blake are jealous, but she does not show it.
Jaune, with his new keen senses, detected Grimm. He was not the only one. Thanks to the veggies he fed the others for two days, their perception and other stats have increased without them knowing. They all took out their weapon and got ready to fight.
However, Jaune remembered he made a promise to Ruby. So, he said, "Ruby, I promised that I was going to show you a cool bow, right?"
Ruby nodded at Jaune, but she said, "Jaune! We need to focus! We have Grimm coming!"
Jaune chuckled at Ruby and said, "Relax, watch this."
Jaune formed the Formless Bow in his left hand and pulled the invisible 'string,' and fired a dozen arrows upon release, killing all the incoming Grimm but one.
Ruby was…Ruby was…in paradise! She jumped Jaune and said, "Oh, my, Oum! The Formless Bow is real! Does that mean the spear is real too?"
Jaune smiled, took out the Absolute Spear, and killed the remaining Grimm with a spear throw, which returned and appeared in his hand.
Back at Beacon, Glynda could not stop pacing around. She only now heard that Jaune was going to Quadrant 5. There was a reason first-years were barred from accepting a mission there. It was hazardous due to being at Mt Glenn.
Glynda was pacing in her office when she thought, 'How could this have happened? What was Ozpin thinking? No matter how much stronger he has gotten, he was not ready to face so much Grimm!'
While trying to calm down her nerves, she heard a call from her scroll. She picked it up and said, Hello."
A female voice could be heard on the phone saying, "Glyn! How are you doing?"
Glynda sighed and answered, "I'm fine." But her fear did not lessen. It only increased it.
The voice on the other side said, "How is my boy doing at Beacon? Is he eating well? Is he making good friends?"
Glynda informed her everything, saying, "Yes to all of that. There is nothing for you to worry about. Everything's fine here."
The voice on the phone sounded satisfied. She said, "That's good. By the way, have you told Jaune yet?"
Glynda shook her head and said, "Not yet. I haven't had the time to tell him."
The voice nodded in understanding. Glynda was a busy woman, after all. She said, "Well, it's okay, just tell him when you can."
"I'll do that when I can," said Glynda. Shen then said, "I have to go. I have a lot of paperwork to finish. Ozpin that lazy bum has been dumping his work in me again."
The voice replied, "All right. I'll call for a chat another time when you are less busy."
Glynda nodded and ended the call. She then collapsed in her seat. She said, "Thank Oum, I could keep calm enough. That woman still scares me."
Glynda's fear of Jaune's mother happened when she was younger, and taking care of Jaune as his babysitter. It so happens that Jaune was a naughty child. One night, when Glynda was babysitting Jaune, he didn't listen to Glynda when she told him that the floor was wet and he shouldn't run. He tripped and started crying.
Glynda stood up to check what had happened as she was making him something to eat. As she was standing by a crying Jaune to see what happened, Mrs. Arc happened to open the door and saw what was happening, but from her perspective, it looked like Glynda was bullying a young Jaune.
All hell broke loose. However, Mrs. Arc apologized when Jaune told her of what happened. Nonetheless, she had already planted a seed of fear into Glynda. Even today, Glynda, who was many times stronger than Mrs. Arc, was afraid of her.
