Summary:

There are some forms of alien activity even MIK turns a blind eye to. The truly alien activity between Chupataro and Ohdo Yuhi, for instance.

Chapter 28: Wisdom of the High Tech Dragon Girl

"I had no clue what it actually cost to run UTS!" Yuhi mourned the fact they'd left most of Asaka's bribe with Yuamu.

Yuhi was holding on to Chupataro's hand tighter than he normally would, except neither of them was conscious of it: Yuhi didn't realize Chupataro's near-freezing was still stinging him that bitingly, and Chupataro didn't realize because it was his robot's hand Yuhi was holding.

"But this is nice too. It's not anything overblown, but it's better than nonstop The*Terror! The*Terror!"

A perhaps unintentional perk of The*Luge's spaceship attaching itself like a spacefaring macrovirus to the outside hull of Val-Valvelgear was the neighbourhood got to get out and reap the benefits of the resultant climate shift.

Asaka had bought the town's indifference. "Ignore the potentially world-ending flagship in the sky and go on with your everyday lives. Let the adults sort out the conflict."

The adults were kids, a pigeon, and a dog, mind you.

Yuhi and Chupataro were watching some regular non-employed kids play a game of hockey on the ice, skating across the incidental rink like The*Luge's Ray Dragon had skated to attack Rovian's Ampler Glee.

"Ya any good at hockey, Chupataro?"

"Chupa and cold don't mix. Remember, cabra?"

"Oh yeah, haha! Sometimes, I forget you're a chupacabra!"

You're that comfortable around Chupa now, chupa? Chupataro thought.

"Is there a sport you're good at?"

"Chupa's not bad at futsal, chupa."

Futsal? So Chupataro wasn't a total geek!

"Once the snow's melted, ya gotta show me your skills!"

"Okay, chupa." Chupataro directed his robot to kick its feet under the bleachers. While he wasn't conscious of the degree to which Yuhi was clinging to him, he was consciously holding back his sharper rejoinders to make up for his ego almost getting himself killed.

Yuhi sipped hot water from his Branded brand thermos.

Chupataro sipped from his Meeeg-chan brand thermos. Two parts hot water and one part Yuhi's donated blood. The onboard heater and three additional layers Chupataro was wearing were seriously pulling their weight.

On Yuamu's advice, Yuhi was taking the rest of the workday off to be with Chupataro.

"Never do something so stupid again."

"Never do what, chupa?"

"Risk your life in such a stupid way! You'd've been ice-free if you'd just done what I said and stayed home!"

"If Chupa never gets any stronger, how can Chupa protect you, chupa?"

Chupataro wants to protect me?

"You're a disaster magnet, chupa! Aliens will always be coming after you because of your connection to Earthdamar, chupa! And that's not even accounting for you rushing into dangerous situations like an idiot yourself, cabra!"

"Chupataro…"

"Chupa won't let them, chupa! Chupa will chupa them before they chupa you, cabra!"

Yuhi wrapped himself around Chupataro all of a sudden.

"Wha-what are you doing, chupa?"

"Shut up, ya smooth-talkin' ass…Don't ruin the moment for me."

Chupaaaahaa! Chupataro blushed.

Both had gotten a little carried away with themselves. The BIG relief at Chupataro's survival had finally dawned on them.

"Hey, hey! You see that? They're doing that with everybody looking!" A teenage girl whispered to her friends.

"Yeah! It's gross! Two guys!"

"I hope they don't get their germs on me!"

It was Yuhi's first experience with homophobia. The crowd he hung out with was so cool about him dating a boy (even though it was Chupataro), he hadn't endured prejudice besides his own initial apprehensions.

It fired up his blood (the blood that wasn't in Chupataro's thermos).

"Hey!" Yuhi stomped down a row to have a row with the lead girl. "We aren't bothering anyone!"

"You're bothering us!" she clapped back at Yuhi, rattled he was retaliating.

"Let's go." Chupataro grabbed Yuhi, attempting to de-escalate a volatile beef.

"No! We didn't do anything wrong!" Yuhi made the mistake of laying a hand on her.

She pushed him off and he tripped.

Everyone held their breaths.

Chupataro caught Yuhi before his head made contact with the bleachers one rung above.

"Chupataro…" Yuhi gazed up.

The two other girls squeed in unison. The way Yuhi landed, it brought to mind Chupataro dipping Yuhi mid-dance.

Chupataro knew their kind. Closet fujoshi.

He kissed Yuhi.

The two girls squeed harder. Their honcho was not happy about it.

"Penalty, chupa!" Chupataro righted Yuhi and dragged him out of there. "What's wrong with you, chupa? Chupa just chewed you out for rushing into dangerous situations, chupa!"

"Leggo, Chupataro!"

"Don't be mad at Chupa, chupa! You could've broken your neck, chupa!"

"Yeah? Now ya know how it feels!"

"Chupa?"

"Chupataro, I almost watched you die!" Yuhi punctuated each word of "watched you die" with a useless punch to Chupataro's robot.

"Chupa…"

"Never do that to me again!"

Chupataro felt how tight Yuhi was clinging to him now. Yuhi wouldn't loosen his arms.

"Chupa is sorry, chupa." He touched a patch of Yuhi's hair that was especially effective in mitigating some of Yuhi's anxiety.

"Where…Where didja –? How didja –?" Yuhi sputtered.

"Anesan's wisdom, chupa. She told Chupa you skinned your knee falling off your hoverboard when you were younger, and rubbing this spot was what stopped your crying, chupa. Chuchuchu! So much for being the older twin, cabra!"

"CHUPATARO!" Yuhi leapt a height Chupataro would not have considered possible for a human.

"WHAT, chupa?"

"You –! We're not –! Yuamu, she isn't –!"

"Chupa?"

"We ain't –! You haven't –!"

"Talk slowly, chupa!"

"It's too soon, Chupataro!"

Chupataro rewound. He'd called Yuamu "Anesan," despite her not being his sister-in-law (yet). He pinched his eyes, abashed he'd blundered into the walk down the aisle discussion again.
