Chapter 54: Another Providence

Two years prior…

"Why do we have to be here? This is MIK's most advanced supermax prison, and it practically runs itself! It's not like these aliens are going anywhere! If they try to escape, the automated security system will roast 'em!"

"Shh! Do you want to be thrown in the Sarlaac Pit?"

"That was the Director General's preferred punishment for disobedience! The Commander-in-Chief is in charge of Mutsuba Town now!"

"I hear he's even worse!"

"What's worse than being fed to an alien that's nothing but tentacles and teeth?"

"Tentacles and teeth? That's cold!"

"Huh? Who are y –?"

"AHHHHHHH!"

The MIK mooks on duty got one glimpse of the Great King of Terror's incredibly boring manga manuscript, and froze solid. MIK was so confident in the impenetrability of its prison, the higher-ups really did only post two guards. They hadn't counted on anyone hacking into and deactivating TEMPEST, the facility's robust firewall software.

"Is this okay? What they're doing is extreme, but this is harsh too. I don't know how I feel about freezing people on purpose."

"They know curry bread's the cure. Besides, it's not just what they're doing. It's what the one behind them is doing."

"That's cold…But by the one behind them, you mean the Commander-in-Chief, right?"

That guy didn't state yes or no, leading the Great King of Terror to glean he was alluding to somebody who wasn't Ryugu Phaser.

In fact, it was the comparison between that guy's extreme methods on this occasion and the methods of this unknown somebody which gave the Great King of Terror a rare peek at that guy seriously angry.

"I appreciate your help, The*Luge."

"It's no hassle! We're friends, aren't we?"

"Mm!"

"What's he like?"

"Excuse me?"

"The guy I remind you of."

"I don't know what you're talking about."

"Do I have to ask twice?" The*Luge's familiar grin was that guy's lifeline, coaxing a shard of joy from his lips.

"Who's there?" The alien in cell #3 squeezed the bars.

"It's that guy!"

"That guy is here? Oh! And the Great King of Terror is with him!"

"Everyone, listen up! We're here to spring you! I'm putting together a team! Ryugu Phaser and Ryugu Tremolo have gotten their hands on powerful cards, and it's highly likely they'll be coming for me! I need you to be my Plan B and fight the Duels I can't if that happens!"

"A team?"

"Should my soul's prayers reach you, then use the power from the underworld and rise forth, my friends! Assemble around me, Sevens!"

Upon getting the call, the Commander-in-Chief of MIK was all the more hellbent on snuffing out the disorder represented by that guy.

"Priority call from Control. There's been a breach at the Ark prison."

Present day.

"I saw that guy and Ryugu Phaser's Rush Duel. It was just a coincidence. But…" Yuhi fell on his back. "In the end, I couldn't do anything. Just like back then…At the end of the battle in Velgear, I couldn't help Yudias at all…and was sent back to Earth."

Damamu copied Yuhi's pose, except Damamu was floating through the air.

"Well, of course I was. After all, an elementary school kid from Earth is just…powerless. I can't do anything…I couldn't do anything for Yudias," his voice got quieter and quieter. "For that guy, or for Chupataro."

Damamu somersaulted in zero gravity. "Nothing at all?"

"It's crazy that…Man, two years. That's not a time to just blink at."

"I know, it hurts."

"Chupataro…When Operation MIK began, he bought me time to get away. He threw himself at MIK so I'd reach UTS, while they had him pinned down with their sasumata at the Black Goat. He put up a good fight."

"With his robot? Did he combine? Did he shoot beams?"

"But even after sacrificing himself, we were still rounded up and evicted to the Alien Residential Area. And Chupataro…Dammit, why wasn't I stronger? Maybe I could've…Where are you, Chupataro? What'd they do to ya?"

"Ding-dong! Yuhi, you're strong!" Damamu retained all the happiness Yuhi didn't.

"Damamu, how? How am I strong?"

"You're a single mom and Chupataro's a deadbeat dad!"

Only in that he's not here. Yuhi was so depressed, he wasn't protesting the "mom" label. Or the notion that he and Chupataro were Damamu's parents.

But deadbeat?

"Deadbeat? Where did you learn such language?"

"From you, Yuhi!"

"We're in a stable orbit, Your Majesty. Cloaking is enabled, and the Earth organization's sensor sweeps won't be able to detect our ship."

"Good, The*Providence. And the Sevens?"

"They've learned of the Velgearian's return, though if I'm being honest, I'm at a loss as to why that guy nominated me to monitor them."

"He wouldn't tell me much, but he did say you're the most qualified to decide what to do about those new cards. How he acted with you around, my guess is you reminded him of someone too."

"You think he's thought this through?"

"I do. Is there a problem, The*Providence?"

"You're too trusting, Your Majesty."

"Why? Because my Chief of Staff once mutinied against me?"

"Yeah, sure. There's that," The*Providence exhaled into his scarf.

"Has it been useful?"

"Sire?"

"The program he created for you from the memory files in his drone?"

"Very."

"I'll leave you to it. Keep me updated."

The*Providence took a seat. He lifted his visor, revealing his burgundy-tinted glasses.

The*Luge went back to peeling his frozen tangerines.

"S'btian?"

A green hexagonal avatar appeared.

"Yes, The*Providence-sama?" the program answered.

"Access Ymir Protocol, Providence 1153 BLUE, clearance level 10. Display all data on the Maximum Cards belonging to Ryugu Tremolo and Ryugu Phaser, and the identification credentials for all missing Mutsuba Town aliens."
