Chapter 79: One Afternoon with the Chaos Behemoth
"Answer me well, Yudias. Why is it that you've come to despise battle?"
"The answer is obvious, Zuwijo. What lies beyond the struggle to hurt each other is the realization that we can no longer understand the people we used to know!"
"It's that part of you, Yudias…Since long ago, I have always –!"
"It is that part of you, Zuwijo. Since long ago, that part of you, everything about you…I have always loved."
…
"Oh dear! Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear! Why am I not able to get through to Zuwijo-sama?" Muda agonized while he ran. "Is a cosmic energy storm interfering with our Gavil Chargers? This is the worst time for communications to go ou –!"
CRASH!
"OUCH! WHY DON'T YOU WATCH WHERE YOU'RE GOING?" Dinois had come down the adjoining corridor, smacking into Muda where the halls intersected.
"Oh, Dinois, it's just you. Sigh."
That isn't an error. The good-looking man said "Sigh" aloud for real.
"WHAT DO YOU MEAN IT'S JUST ME? YOU CRASHED INTO ME!"
"You crashed into me…" Muda contended he had the right of way, given he was on foot and Dinois was not.
"ARE YOU WHISPERING TO YOURSELF?"
"Me? The Whisper Officer in service to Zuwijo-sama? No…I WAS SCREAMING LIKE YOU!"
"You're right. It was entirely my fault. I'm so embarrassed."
"You are?"
Wouldn't it be great if Dinois were humbled? Was that even a possibility?
"NO, I'M BEING FACETIOUS!"
A deep breath each, and they both lowered their voices.
"So? Where were you off to in such a hurry?" Dinois got back on her saucer.
Muda was on the cusp of replying "Wouldn't you like to know?" but stayed his tongue. "I was hoping to talk to Zuwijo-sama. Have you seen him? My Gavil Charger isn't working."
"It's working perfectly! Zuwijo-sama is just out of range!"
"Out of range? But he'd only be out of range if he –"
"He's off-planet. Zuwijo-sama took the Zaida Velgear to Achrady VII after the meeting with the Velgearian Supreme Council!"
"Achrady VII? What business does Zuwijo-sama have there?"
"The exhibition Rush Duel with our former enemies is coming up, isn't it? Zuwijo-sama is on a leave of absence before the big day! The view from planets in the Achrady star system is said to be the most beautiful in the universe!"
Muda was stupefied. "Zuwijo-sama is there to relax?"
"With Yudias!" Dinois was sad her genius was being wasted on this. Muda may have claimed he was Zuwijo's "rightest of right-hand men," but hey now! Dinois Velgear's smarts were unparalleled!
"Ohhh. Why didn't you say so?"
…
The morning dew disappeared from the leaves with the exploding fires of Achrady VII's sun in the distance, and with these pulses of heat across the planet, the light grew eternal. It was never night on Achrady VII. Always some permutation of morning or midday.
The solar flares were inconsequential to Velgearians.
"I do not understand. We have achieved nearly 100% understanding with the enemies of the Velgear Cluster. I should be celebrating the dialogue between our races. The exhibition Rush Duel is coming up. Could it be I am nervous?"
It was nervousness, was it not? To be the valiant hero that ended the war?
This Rush Duel was critical. It would be the linchpin to lasting peace.
"Indeed. It is the Rush Duel I am nervous about."
The warrior in him pushed back on this. Or what he thought was the warrior in him. The shining example of a pure, righteous, and trustworthy Velgearian!
In actuality, a yet-announced schemer had planted a seed to push him in the appropriate direction.
You miss the Ohdo siblings.
Zuwijo poured Yudias a glass of Antarian cider. "Then celebrate, Yudias. This victory wouldn't have come about without you."
"Zuwijo…"
"As you did for me and for all Velgearians, you showed our adversaries there is another way."
Yudias felt as though they were in the flower field again. The road to arrive here had been long.
He'd offered Yuhi romantic advice before based on what Velgearians knew of alien species and what he read in Volume 88 of Mr. Universe, but the boot was on the other foot. Yudias now found himself racing to recall how Yuhi and Chupataro were around each other, to not look inept in front of Zuwijo.
It didn't do him much good since ineptitude was baked into Yuhi and Chupataro's relationship. Yuhi and Chupataro just made do with their mess. Similarly, he'd have to play the cards as he drew them, where he went with Zuwijo from this point not unlike the limitless potential of Rush Duels.
Yudias had the right idea, understanding his crisis in Rush Duel terms. But the schemer wasn't impressed by Zuwijo. Zuwijo's reticent flirtations were boring.
The unsetting sun continued to burn in the distance, Yudias and Zuwijo shadow puppets over the alien landscape.
…
Present day. Again.
"Zuwijo…A new Duel shall begin now. Now, please choose a new Duelist!" Yudias urged after activating the Interstellar Change set from Phaser/Zuwijo's Graveyard.
That bastard Kuaidul. Using him and using Yudias for his own foolish reasons. Not answering why he chose now to make his move.
Zuwijo was not amused.
From separate roosts in the arena, Yuna and Rovian stared a black hole through Yudias to the darkness of Kuaidul sleeping in the back of Yudias' mind.
Yuamu couldn't stop trembling. Who? Who could stop Yudias?
Hearts. Cards. They were all the same to Kuaidul.
Turning friend against friend. Lover against lover. Not controlling Yudias to complete his Kartios Project.
It was the narrator!
Yes.
Kuaidul does war crimes.
