The Amamiya That Came to Dinner
Minato Amamiya had been going steady with Mana and Mitsu Kitagawa for almost a month. Ever since they got together there had been talk all over Shujin Academy about how Minato had become the academy's new 'babe magnet', and there had been many discussions between countless members of the Shujin student body on how they make a three-way relationship like theirs work. A few other students know that Ren Amamiya is Minato's father, and they remember the stories they had heard about the older Amamiya male and how he juggled multiple dates at the same time, so those particular students weren't surprised that Minato got two girls on his arm.
"The apple doesn't fall far from the tree," they would say.
However, there are two people that are unaware of the Mana x Minato x Mitsu relationship. And those two people were none other than Mana and Mitsu's parents themselves, Haru and Yusuke Kitagawa. Sure, they knew their daughters had started dating, but what they didn't know was that they were both seeing the same guy. Mana and Mitsu were afraid of how their parents would take this news, so they were always hesitant to make it known. However, since a month had passed since they started dating, the twins saw this as the perfect time to break the news to their parents. They just had to ask their parents if they could have their boyfriend over first.
We see Mana approaching Yusuke as he works on a new painting in his art studio. When the artists takes a break to clean off his brushes, that's when Mana decided to speak up.
"Hey, dad," Mana greeted.
"Hey, sweetie," Yusuke greeted, "How was school? I'd hug you but I don't want to get your clothes dirty with my paint."
"I understand, and school was fine," Mana said, "But I came here to ask you something."
"Sure, what is it sweetie?" Yusuke asked.
"Can I invite my boyfriend over for dinner this Friday?" Mana asked.
"I thought you'd never ask," Yusuke said, "Sure. Invite him over. Haru and I will make a fresh ham with mashed potatoes and steamed vegetables."
"Sounds delicious," Mana smiled, "And I'm sure he'll love it too. Thanks, daddy!"
"Anytime," Yusuke said as he went back to his painting and Mana left his studio.
Meanwhile, at Cafe Kitamura, Mitsu walks in to find her mother at the register.
"Hey, mom," Mitsu says as she walks up to Haru.
"Mitsu, hi," Haru said as she came from behind the counter to give her daughter a hug, "How was your day?"
"Good," Mitsu said, "But I wanted to ask you something."
"Sure, anything," Haru said.
"As you know I've been going steady with this guy for about a month," Mitsu said, "I want to know if I can invite him over for dinner on Friday."
"Well, it's about time your father and I got to meet this mysterious boyfriend of yours," Haru said, "We'd love to have your boyfriend over."
"Great," Mitsu smiled as she hugged her mother, "Thank you so much!"
"Anything to see you happy, sweetie," Haru said as she hugged her daughter back.
We then fast forward to the big night; Friday! Haru is seen taking the ham out of the oven before bringing it out to the dining room table, which Yusuke is setting up with the side dishes, rolls, as well as silverware and napkins. They are both seen wearing formal casual attire as they go over seating arrangements.
"So you and I will sit at the ends of the table, Mana and Mitsu will take the left side here, and their boyfriends will take the right side there," Yusuke explained.
"Sounds good," Haru said before becoming emotional, "Oh, Yusuke, I never thought this day would come. Our little girls, all grown up and entering the dating world."
"We knew this day would come, darling," Yusuke said as he hugged his teary eyed wife and gave her a kiss on the cheek, "Don't worry. It's not like they're going to be married by the end of the evening."
"Marriage," Haru gasped before becoming even more teary eyed, "Oh, Yusuke, please find a way to turn back time! I want Mana and Mitsu to stay my little girls forever!"
"We'll get through this together, Haru," Yusuke said as he lovingly stroked his wife's floofy hair, "You'll see, everything will be just fine."
"I just hope these boys are nice to them," Haru said before getting venom in her voice, "Because if they're not I will find them, and I will make them sorry!"
"I know you will, darling," Yusuke said as he continued to comfort his wife, not wanting to make her more upset.
"How are you so calm and collected?" Haru asked, "I would've thought you'd be in hysterics with me?"
"Like I said, Haru, I knew that this day would come," Yusuke said, "I knew our daughters would grow up and seek companionship. I've made proper peace with this fact."
Suddenly, Mana and Mitsu enter the dining room in their best outfits. Mana was seen wearing a black dress with her floofy auburn hair tied in a ponytail, while Mitsu is wearing a white dress and her blue hair is tied in a bun. They also applied some lip gloss and mascara to make themselves look more presentable for their date.
"How do we look, guys?" Mana asked her parents.
The only thing Yusuke could respond with was tears and a wail of, "My girls are all grown up!"
The twins could only watch as their parents cried and held each other, saddened by the fact that their little girls aren't so little anymore.
"Okay then," Mana said as the sound of the doorbell brought Haru and Yusuke back to reality.
"Oh, that must be him!" Mitsu said as she and Mana ran to the front door with their parents following behind them.
"Your dates came here together?" Yusuke asked as the family made it to the front door.
"Are they brothers?" Haru asked.
"Oh, we didn't tell you," Mitsu said in an embarrassed tone, "This is awkward."
"Girls, what's going on?" Haru asked.
"Mom, dad, we'd like you to meet our date, Minato Amamiya," Mana said as Mitsu opened the door to let a well dressed Minato into their home.
"Hey, girls," Minato greeted his girlfriends as he stepped into the house.
"Hey, Minato," The twins said in response.
In his hands, Minato had two boxes of chocolates and two roses, one of each for each of them.
"Two chocolates and two roses for the two most beautiful girls in the world," Minato said as he handed Mana and Mitsu their gifts before giving them both a kiss.
"Thank you, sweetie," Mitsu said.
Haru and Yusuke were taken aback. They never thought in a million years that their daughters would enter a polygamous relationship, let alone with the son of Ren and Ann. They weren't sure what to make of this situation. The only thing they knew was how unorthodox is all seemed.
"Uncle Yusuke, Auntie Haru, you both look wonderful this evening," Minato said to the parents of his girlfriends before taking a whiff of the ham-scented air that pervaded the home, "Mmm, something smells good."
"We're, uh, having ham for dinner," Yusuke said.
"Oh, cool," Minato said with a smile
"Yeah…cool," Yusuke said, still weirded out by the whole situation.
"Can you excuse us for one moment please," Haru said, equally weirded out, as she and Yusuke ran into another room to talk amongst themselves.
"Come with us to the dining room, Minato," Mana said as she, her sister, and their boyfriend made their way to the dining room.
In the kitchen, Haru and Yusuke were seen discussing the new development in their daughters' love lives.
"What is happening right now?" Yusuke panicked, "Why are our daughters dating one guy?"
"I don't know," Haru said, equally confused and panicked, "How does a relationship like that work? Does Minato have a favorite between Mana and Mitsu? If this relationship goes places how will things like marriage work? Who will mother Minato's baby if the relationship gets to that point? Love is supposed to be between two people, not three!"
"Haru, take it easy," Yusuke said, "You're rushing things by talking about grandkids and marriage."
"Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't polyamory illegal here in Japan?" Haru asked.
"I think so," Yusuke answered, "But if our daughters are in love with Minato, there's not really much we can do to stop them."
"You're telling me you're okay with this?" Haru asked, befuddled.
"I didn't say that," Yusuke replied, "I don't think I'll ever fully understand something like this. But, we can't help who Mana and Mitsu fall for. If they both love Minato equally and are happy, more power to them."
"I guess so," Haru said, still uneasy about the whole situation, "Does Ren and Ann even know about this?"
"We should call them and find out," Yusuke said as he took out his cell phone and dialed the Amamiya Residence.
At the Amamiya Residence, Ren, Ann, and Morgana were heard in the bathroom; all three of them sounded distressed. This is because Ren and Ann are trying to give Morgana a bath, and the cat is giving the couple a hard time.
"No! Stop it!" Morgana cried as Ann held the cat down and lathering his fur with soap while Ren used the shower head to spray water on him.
"You have to take your bath, Morgana, it's for your own good!" Ren said, "Now hold still!"
"I hate you!" Morgana yelled.
"Morgana stop squirming," Ann said as she struggled to both hold the cat down, but also scrub his fur.
"You suck!" Morgana cried.
"If you behave, we'll give you an extra helping of fatty tuna," Ren attempting to bribe his cat.
"All of the fatty tuna in the world won't get me to comply, Ren!" Morgana protested, causing the bespectacled man and his wife to groan.
Suddenly, from the other room, the telephone started to ring.
"Ren, could you handle Morgana," Ann asked, "I've got to see who this is."
"Sure, babe," Ren said as Ann left the bathroom and Ren continued to try and bathe his cat.
Ann made her way to her office where she designs her own clothes as it's the closest house phone from the bathroom. Upon entering her office, she answers the phone, "Hello?"
"Ann," Yusuke said, "It's Yusuke and Haru."
"Oh, hey you guys," Ann said, "What's up?"
"Ann, are you and Ren aware that Minato is dating both Mana and Mitsu?" Haru was heard asking.
"Yeah, why?" Ann asked.
"YOU'LL NEVER TAKE ME ALIVE!" Morgana was heard screaming as out in the hallway, the cat was running away from Ren, who chased after him, loofah in hand.
"Morgana, get back here!" Ren yelled as he chased after the cat.
"What's going on over there?" Haru asked.
"Ren and I were trying to give Morgana a bath when you guys called," Ann explained.
"Ah," went Haru, "Anyway, you knew your son was dating both of our daughters?!"
"Yeah, it's no big deal," Ann said as, in the background, Morgana stopped in front of the office door, only continuing to run when he spots Ren approaching him with an oversized butterfly net, "Polyamorous relationships happen all the time."
"Yeah, in third world countries," Yusuke said, "How are you and Ren okay with this?"
"Easy," Ann said as, out in the hallway, Ren continued to chase Morgana with the net in one hand and a loofah in the other, "Mana and Mitsu treat my son well, and he treats them well. I've noticed that they're at their happiest when they're together. The three of them are clearly in love with each other. We can't help who our children fall in love with. But as long as they're happy, that's all that really matters."
"People are going to talk when they learn our daughters are dating the same boy," Haru said.
"Let them talk," Ann said, "Why should we care what people think about us? We should live our lives, both our daily lives and our love lives, on our own terms and not base it on what the public thinks."
As Ann tried to talk some sense into Haru and Yusuke, in the background we see Ren stop in front of the office door, looking for Morgana. Suddenly, Morgana drops down from out of nowhere and lands on Ren's face as the bespectacled man struggled to get him off.
"Look, I know Minato is over there right now," Ann said, "Just treat this like a normal date and don't think too deep into things. I'm sure you'll warm up to the idea in due time."
"Alright, Ann, we'll try," Haru said.
"See you later," Yusuke chimed in.
"Bye," Ann said as she hung up the phone in time to look out in the hallway to see Ren and Morgana fighting each other, "Morgana! Get off of him!"
Ann went over to her husband and cat to try and break up their brawl so they could continue to try and give Morgana his bath.
Back at the Kitagawa Residence, Yusuke put his cell phone away in his back pocket as he and Haru looked at each other with unsure looks.
"Ann basically said what I told you, darling," Yusuke said, "If our kids are happy together, more power to them. We'll just treat this like a normal date. We'll have a nice family dinner with him, and try to ignore the fact that our daughters have become polygamous."
"I'll try," Haru said as she and Yusuke took a deep breath and made their way into the dining room.
Upon entering the dining room, they saw their daughters and Minato seated at the table, with Mana and Mitsu sitting on the left side and Minato sitting on the right. Yusuke and Haru took their places at the ends of the table and settled themselves into their chairs.
"What were you guys talking about?" Mana asked her parents.
"Nothing you need to worry yourself with, sweetie," Haru said, "Now then, let's eat."
"Mind if I say grace, Auntie Haru?" Minato asked.
"I didn't know you said grace before a meal, Minato," Yusuke said.
"I don't usually," Minato said, "But this is a special occasion, so I think we should do it."
"If you say so," Yusuke said as he, Minato, Haru, Mana, and Mitsu put their hands together and bow their heads.
"Dear Lord," Minato said, "Bless this food and the hands that prepared it. Thank you for giving us our health, our friends, and a roof over our heads. May we continue to make you proud, oh Lord. Amen."
"Alright, let's eat!" Haru said as the five people around the table grabbed some ham slices, some mashed potatoes and vegetables, and a roll. With that, they all proceeded to eat.
"Mmm, this is delicious, Auntie Haru," Minato complemented after savoring his first bite.
"I'm glad you liked it, Minato," Haru smiled, "And how do you like the rolls? I made them with the same recipe that I used in the rolls that I make for my cafe."
Minato took a bite and smiled as he chewed it up.
"So soft and fluffy," Minato said before realizing something, causing him to cover his mouth, "I'm sorry, I'm talking with my mouth full."
"Minato, it's okay," Yusuke said, "We're not snobs."
"I know," Minato said, "I just really want to make a great first impression on you guys. Up until this moment you've known me as, 'Minato: Close Friend and Son of Ren and Ann'. But now I want you to know me as, 'Minato: Boyfriend of Mana and Mitsu Kitagawa'."
"Do we have a choice?" Yusuke asked.
"Oh, Uncle Yusuke," Minato chuckled, "You're such a card."
All five people at the table chuckled before Minato spoke up again.
"Can I say that you guys raised some fine daughters," Minato said.
"By fine when you say they're fine, you're referring to their character and not…ahem…other things," Haru said.
"Of course, I'm talking about their character, Auntie Haru," Minato said, "What kind of perv do you take me for? Anyway, they both possess some amazing talents. You guys saw me at Mitsu's last violin recital, and when Mana won first prize at the Shujin Academy Art Show last month. They broke the mold when they made you girls, that's for sure."
"Aw, that's sweet of you babe," Mana said.
"We're glad you appreciate our talents, sweetie," Mitsu said.
After taking another bite of ham, Yusuke faces Minato once more.
"So, Minato," Yusuke said, "What is it about our daughters that make you want to spend time with them?"
"Aside from the fact that we've known each other since we were babies," Minato began, "I just like being around them. I feel like I can be myself and they won't judge me. They know how to have fun, but at the same time they know what they want from life."
"And what about you?" Haru asked, "What do you plan on doing when you graduate from Shujin Academy?"
"I haven't really figured that out yet, if I'm being completely honest," Minato said after taking a sip from his water, "Although my parents said that once I graduate they'll give me a year off to really think about it. They're going to do the same thing to Kimiko when she graduates too."
"A year off to clear your head does sound like a good idea," Yusuke said.
"Dad, you know Mana and I want to go to college as soon as possible," Mitsu said.
"I know, sweetie, I'm just thinking out loud," Yusuke said before turning back to Minato, "But where do you see yourself in, say, ten years from now?"
"Even if I don't know what I want to do in my life, I do know that I want to find myself in a career where I can climb the corporate ladder," Minato answered, "So I'd have to say, for right now, an assistant manager of some kind, making steady pay to keep a roof over my head, and to support my two girls and their dreams of being a concert violinist and painter respectively."
"Painter by night, cafe owner by day, don't forget," Mana reminded Minato of her desire to acquire her mother's cafe when she retires.
"Even if I don't make my own dreams come true, my main goal in life right now is to see your daughters happy, Uncle Yusuke," Minato said, "I'll do whatever I can to make sure Mana and Mitsu are the two happiest women in the world."
"That's noble of you, Minato," Yusuke said, "Your willingness to sacrifice your dreams and happiness at the drop of the hat for my girls. But it's always good to have a drive of your own, don't forget."
"I know," Minato said.
"Hey, Minato," Mana said, "After this do you want to go up to my room and play Superb Shatter Dudes Ultimate with us?"
"Sure," Minato said before turning to the twins' parents, "Don't worry, we'll keep the door open."
"Good to know you respect us and our girls, Minato," Haru said.
"What can I say? My folks raised a gentleman," Minato said, proudly.
"Ren and Ann did do a good job raising you," Yusuke said, "I won't deny that."
"And he's acquired both of his parents' good looks," Mana swooned as she and Mitsu stared at Minato's handsome blue eyes and straight black hair.
"Please, you're making me blush, girls," Minato said humbly.
"You know, I've got to admit, I was a little nervous about you dating both of our daughters, Minato," Haru said, "Yusuke and I weren't sure if you had a favorite between the two of them, or if you have ulterior motives in dating them, but we can see that you care about them a lot."
"You mean that?" Minato asked.
"Of course," Yusuke responded, "You're polite, humble, and even though you do need something resembling drive in your life, it is nice how you're willing to support Mana and Mitsu's dreams and aspirations."
"Your daughters mean the world to me, Uncle Yusuke," Minato said, "I'd never do anything to hurt them. As sappy as this sounds, they're my whole world."
"Aw, babe," Mana and Mitsu said.
"I love you, girls," Minato said as he turned to the twins and smiled.
"We love you too, Minato," Mana and Mitsu said.
The three of them got up from their seats and walked over to each other so they could embrace one another. Haru and Yusuke looked at their daughters and Minato before looking at each other, smiling warmly, their moment of affection reminding the couple of when they were young and started dating.
Later that night, Minato returned home. As he walked through the front door he saw Ren and Ann administering first aid to each other; cleaning each other's cat scratch marks with disinfecting ointment before covering each other's wounds with bandages.
"Morgana's bath night?" Minato asked his parents.
"Yeah," Ren and Ann said.
"How was your dinner date with Mana and Mitsu?" Ann asked.
"I think it went pretty well," Minato said happily as he hung up his coat.
"Did Haru and Yusuke like you just fine?" Ren asked.
"I think they're still a little weirded out about me dating both of their daughters," Minato admitted, "But they're coming around."
"That's good," Ren said as he covered another scratch mark on Ann's arm with a bandage.
"Do you guys need some help?" Minato asked.
"No, sweetie, I think we're fine," Ann said as she took care of a scratch mark on Ren's shoulder.
"If you say so," Minato said, "I think I'll just hang out in my room for the night if that's alright."
"Go ahead, son," Ren said, "See you in the morning."
"Yeah, have a good night," Ann chimed in.
"G'night, mom and dad, I love you both," Minato said as he made his way upstairs, humming to himself.
"He seems really happy with Mana and Mitsu," Ann said.
"Yeah," Ren said, "Reminds me of when we started dating."
"Me too," Ann said as she gave her husband a kiss on the lips before the two of them resumed treating their wounds.
END
