Chapter 13
Brother My Brother
"DADAN?!" the twins shouted out in unison. Though Luffy's was of pure relief while Harry's was laced with confusion. Dadan meanwhile, was able to use her ax and push Bluejam away from Ace. "That's enough you sea criten," she declared.
"Luffy! Harry!" another voice called out. The two, along with Ace looked to see the other mountain bandits running up towards them. "What are you all doing here?" Harry found himself asking.
"We saw the fire all the way from the mountains and was worried something was wrong," Dogra replied as he looked over Luffy's injuries. He then looked at all three boys and realized something. "Hey wait where's Sabo?"
"Long story short he's back a High Town. He's safe," Harry explained. Dogra sighed in relief before calling upon the bigger bandits to come over and help carry the kids.
Meanwhile, Bluejam focused on the mountain bandit in front of him. "So you're the boss monkey from Mount Corvo?"
Dadan slammed her ax to the ground as she declared, "I'm the mountain bandit, Dadan as well as, for some weird reason, their foster parent. This means if someone lays a hand on them I won't stand by and watch. Even if I'm not their real parent." Harry just stood there amazed. Dadan actually cared about him and his brothers. Who knew?
"If you leave now I'll let you go. If not, then I'll have to resort to violence," Dadan said firmly reading her ax.
Bluejam just smiled as he lifted up his sword. "Try it," he dared. Dadan took a step forward. Looking as though she was prepared to fight. Then.
"Run away!" she commanded and all the bandits took off in the other direction. Luffy and Harry not too far behind.
"Hey what are you doing!" Harry turned to see Dadan going over to Ace, who hasn't moved an inch.
Ace simply griped on to his pipe and declared with fierce determination (or stubbornness, it's hard to tell which) "I won't run!"
Harry stop running and began to shout at Ace. "Are you crazy! The fire is still all around us and Bluejam is to tough for us right now."
Ace spared Harry a glance for a brief second. "Just get Luffy to safety," he ordered.
Harry stood firm. "No way! I'm not leaving you behind."
"Just do it. That's an order from your captain."
Harry stood frozen at that. His attention was brought back by Luffy's weak movements. "Hey, I want to fight too!"
Harry shook his head. "No way Luf, your way to injured right now."
Dadan stood beside Ace. "You all take Harry and Luffy and go on ahead."
"But boss, what about you?" one of the bandits asked.
"Don't worry about me. I'll be responsible for taking Ace home," she answered. "Go. NOW!" The bandits all nodded and proceeded to retreat.
"You better come back in one piece Ace!" Harry hollered as he followed the bandits back to the forest. Luffy was picked up and slung over Magara's shoulder as he kept calling out to Ace.
They made it back to the hut without any further incident. The twins were treated by Dogra and Luna before they were sent to bed. Neither twin could sleep though. Finally, Luffy stood up and headed for the front door. Harry got up as well and followed him.
"Hey where are you going?" he asked in a whisper as the other bandits had fallen asleep.
"To find Ace and Dadan," Luffy answered as he tried to open the door.
Harry quickly got up to him. "You can barely stand," he argued. Luffy ignored him though and opened up the door with such force that he fell through it and landed face-first into the ground. The commotion woke Magra up and he walked over to the two.
"Hey now, you guys need to go back to bed," he told them.
Harry huffed and crossed his arms. "Yea tell that to Luffy," he said.
Magra put his hands on Luffy's shoulders. "Look there is a lot of troops coming in to clean up after the fire as well as the survivors," Magra tried to explain.
Harry felt a shiver of cold run down his spine at that. "You mean they're killing off the rest?" Harry asked in just above a whisper. Magra nodded. Harry clutched his hands in disbelief. He couldn't believe anyone could be so cruel.
Luffy continued to sniffle. "But I want to see Ace," he said. "And I'm worried about Sabo as well." Harry almost forgot about Sabo after everything that has happened. Since he lives in High Town did he hear what the nobles were planning? Did Sabo tried to warn them? Was he even okay after his father took him back? Harry slumped to the floor emotionally drained and shut his eyes. Before he knew it he was fast asleep.
When Harry woke back up it was morning. All of the bantits still seemed to be sulking though. And there was still no sign of Ace and Dadan.
"Morning Harry." Harry looked up to see Luna with a plate of eggs for him.
"Morning Luna," Harry greeted as he took the food. "Dadan and Ace haven't returned yet."
Luna shook her head. "Dogra went out to look for them but he hasn't come back either yet."
Suddenly one of the bandits busted through the door. "Thier back. They've returned!" he shouted.
Harry, Luffy, Luna, and Magra were the firsts out of the door and froze at what they saw. Ace was badly burned, his clothes were all but ruined, and he was carrying an unconscious Dadan on his back who had to have weighed three times more than him. They were quickly ushered back inside where Luna and Harry started to use their magic to try and treat the wounds. Luffy was crying tears of joy while the rest of the bandits went to get medical supplies to treat the stuff the young wizard and witch couldn't.
Ace turned to Luffy who was still crying. "What did you think I was dead or something?" he asked annoyed.
Luffy took a big sniff and tried to calm down. "Well yeah, but..." he was interrupted when Ace punched him on the head.
"Idiot! Don't think I am dead when I'm not!" Ace yelled.
"Don't go doing stupid stuff like that and he won't," Harry argued as he continued to patch up Dadan.
Magra step in between them. "Hey now everyone, Luffy's just glad you made it back. Isn't that right?" he asked turning to Luffy who nodded. Ace pondered this for a minute before ruffling Luffy's hair a little awkwardly. At that Luffy tackled Ace in a hug and started crying once more. Harry walked up to them with a smile on his face and joined in on the hug.
Afterward Ace told them what happened back at Grey Terminal. Ace and Dadan were barly able to beat Bluejam, and getting out of Grey Terminal was even tricker with the fire and the guards sent to kill the survivors. Though Ace managed to get supplies to keep Dadan stable. With everyone settled down, Luffy and Harry decided to go outside and play with the bandit's dog Pochi.
After an hour or so Ace came and join them and they decided to go hunting for some dinner. Harry tried to get him and Luffy to do most of the work and let Ace rest but Ace would have none of it. "Come on now, it's my job as the older brother to take care of the both of you," he'd argue.
Luffy was running around not even paying attention to his older brothers but Harry kept trying to insist. "Look you're injured so you have to take it easy." In the end Ace relented and Harry and Luffy (with some help from Ace) managed to catch a few deers for dinner.
As they were heading back Luffy wandered away from the others when he had caught sight of some beetles. Harry used this opportunity to talk to Ace alone. "So what did you do back there with Bluejam?" he asked.
Ace looked at Harry confused. "What do you mean?"
"When that one pirate was about to stab Luffy. You did something," Harry told him. "It was like you emitted this force that knocked out the other pirates."
Ace looked surprised at that. "You serious? I didn't notice." Harry nodded before looking down in thought.
Luffy then walked up with two Beatles in his hand. "Hey, Harry look what I found. Wanna play with these when we get back to the cabin?"
Harry nodded and pumped his fist. "You're on little bro."
By the time the trio had made it back to the cabin night had fallen. The bandits went to made the deer while Luffy put the two beetles in a barrel where he and Harry used sticks to get them to fight each other. The twins continued playing with Ace watching in the background until the sound of the front door got everyone's attention. Dogra had finally returned. He was pale and Harry could see him shaking a bit.
Luna went off to get him a blanket while the others went up to him. Dogra noticed Dadan and Ace were among them and smiled but he still looked rather nervous. "Oh boss, Ace, you both made it," he said.
Dadan nodded drinking some sake from a cup Magra just poured for her. She also took note of Dogra's appearance. "What's wrong? You look spooked."
Dogra nodded and started talking. "Well, I had overheard something about a ceromony so I snuck into High Town to get the details. Turns out the nobels were indeed the ones behind the fire. The king was in on it too. They spread a rumor to Edge Town that Bluejam's group had caused it."
Harry scoffed. "Well technically they did," he mumbled, shaking a little himself at the thought of him and his brother helping that sick creep.
Nobody heard him as Dadan went and asked the million berrie question. "But why? The nobels never cared about Grey Terminal before."
"Yea," Ace agreed. "What was so special about this stupid ceremony?"
Dogra started shaking even harder and wrapped the blanket around him really tight. "They were welcoming Celestial Dragons at the port," he told them. All the adults froze at that while the kids looked rather confused.
Luna blinked. "Hold on, Dadan didn't you mentioned them a few days ago? Who exactly are they?" she asked.
Another bandit was the one who answered. "Basically they're higher up than the nobles. But why would they be here?"
"Apparently they came to inspect the kingdom," Dogra replied still shaking like a leaf.
Harry started to feel a chill go down his spine. "Dogra your starting to scare me," he said. "What exactly happened there?"
"Well, when the ship drew closer a small fishing boat set sail from out of nowhere. The Celestial Dragon fired on it and killed the person on board. It was a small child... IT WAS SABO! HE WAS ON THAT BOAT! SABO'S DEAD!"
Everyone in the room froze. Unable to comprehend what they had just heard. Harry fell on his bottom. Dogra's words playing over and over again in his head. Ace and Luffy denied it saying how Sabo went back to his biological parents. Ace even started attacking Dogra for even saying such a thing. Harry wasn't paying any attention to them though. He just tuned everyone out.
Sabo. Dead. It kept playing in his head over and over again. The room started shaking a little. The windows started to rattle. Ace picked up his pipe and ran for the door. "Where is the guy that did this. I'm gonna kill him!" he demanded. Dadan quickly put a stop to that by slamming him to the ground.
"What can you do right now?" she asked. "It wasn't one man who killed your brother it was this very world that killed him. Your just a nobody right now who's walking into a suicide mission. Your father's death brought about a great age. When you achieve the same caliber he has then you can live and die however you pleased." She then tossed him to some of the bandits and ordered them to tie him up for his own safety. Luffy just stood there, unable to stop crying.
The rumbling in the hut started to grow stronger. The bandits looked around confused wondering what was going on now. "Dadan," Harry called out in a weak voice. Dadan looked over to Harry and saw him shaking with tears as well. But there was also something else. She could literally see the magic coming out of him in short bursts. Harry tried to speak again yet seemed to struggle with every pulse of magic that came out of him.
"Boss, what's happening?" Magra asked her.
"The shock must be sending his magic over the limit," Dadan figured. "Quick, put him in an empty room so he doesn't hurt anyone." The bandits quickly obeyed and locked Harry in his bedroom before his magic went out of control. Once the door shut Harry let out an anguishing cry. Mirrors broke, windows shattered and some of the walls and the ceiling were dented with the force of magic Harry let out.
It felt like forever but it was only a few minutes before Harry's powers gave out and he fell unconscious. He awoke to find Luffy and Ace standing over him with a glass of water and some food. The sun was shining outside the broken windows and Harry looked around to see the damage he had done to the room.
"How are you feeling?" Ace asked him as Luffy gripped him in a tight hug.
"Fine, I guess," Harry answered as he took the food and started eating. "How long have I been out?"
"A few days," Luffy answered letting out the occasional sob. Harry looked down to see his younger twin crying.
Rubbing the top of his head he said "I'm sorry Luffy. I didn't mean to make you guys worry on top of what just happened."
Luffy quickly smiled and said that he was just happy Harry was awake while Ace scoffed in his usual 'whatever' tone though Harry could see a small smile on his face. As he was finishing his meal he saw Ace take out something.
"What's that?" he asked.
"Apparently Sabo wrote us a letter before he set sail," Ace replied. "After your done eating we'll go out and read the letter."
Harry nodded and finished up rather quickly. After letting the bandits know that he was awake and apologized for trashing the room the trio of boys set out to their favorite cliffside. The same one where they declared their pirate dreams. The twins set down as Ace opened up the letter and read out loud.
Dear Ace, Harry, and Luffy
I hope you guys weren't hurt in that fire but I have faith that you three survived. I'm sorry about this but a lot had happened and so I have decided to go out ahead to sea. My destination will be anywhere but here. Then I'll become stronger... I'll become a pirate. We'll become pirates with the most freedom out there. And we'll meet again someday. The four of us. On that wide free ocean. I'm sure out there...we'll meet again.
Harry saw that there was more to the letter but Ace stopped there and put the letter away before Harry could read it.
Luffy started crying once again. His straw hat clutched down over his face so his brothers wouldn't see his tears. Ace noticed this anyway and breathed down on his fist much like Garp would do before he clocked Luffy on the head. "Will you stop crying already!" he shouted.
Harry got up to calm Ace down. "Just leave him be," he said. "He's still grieving like the rest of us." The three sat silent for a few minutes until Luffy spoke up.
"Hey, guys... I want to be stronger... and stronger... and stronger and stronger..." he said that word over and over again like a mantra. Each one held more vigor than the last despite the tears still streaming down his face. "Stronger and stronger... and even stronger than that! That way I'll be able to protect anything! I won't lose anyone ever again! Promise me you two... promise me that the two of you won't die on me."
"DON'T BE STUPID!" Ace yelled his temper back in full swing. "Listen up, I am not going to die. Not now, not ever!"
Harry nodded and turned towards Luffy. "I'm not going to die on you either," he promised. "We'll both become strong to watch each other and everyone else." Luffy nodded at his twin. The tears finally drying up.
After a while of staring out into the sea, the brothers made their way back to the bandits where they found Minako and Woopslap waiting. The mayor looked sterner than ever while Minako had unshed tears in her eyes. "Hey what are you guys doing here?" Harry asked them.
Minako walked over to them and knelt down so she could give the boys a group hug. "We heard about what had happened to Sabo and wanted to check on you three," she explained.
Woopslap tilted his hat down to cover his eyes. "What a terrible thing to happen," he mumbled. Minako then took something out of her bag and handed it to the boys. It was three different sets of stationery. One for each of them.
"What are these for?" Harry asked.
"I know that Sabo is gone from this world but I've heard some people write letters to those that they have lost to help them cope," Makino told them. "I figured you three could give it a try if you like."
Ace shrugged and walked away. "No thanks," he said. "What's the point of writing anything if no one's going to read it." Luffy and Harry took their presents with little hesitation.
"I don't even really know how to write," Luffy said.
Harry chuckled. "No worries, I can help you out," he offered. Luffy practically jumped for joy and the two ran inside to write their first letter to Sabo. Ace smiled as he watched his brother run in before going back to the woods to find some dinner.
Wow this didn't take as long as usual. And yea I know Luffy didn't want to hear the letter but I figured Harry would want to so yea. So I've heard no complaints about making Harry the Straw Hat's cronicler so this letter thing that I've added at the end will serve as the origin for the position. If I change my mind later before they set sail than it can be easily dropped. I honestly got the idea from another fanfic but I can't remember where I saw it from. Anywho I hope you guys enjoyed whatever December holiday you celebrate and remember to please leave a review, fallow the story if you haven't already, favorite it once it's done and I will see you all in the new year with a new chapter.
