Kai sighed as the motorcycle came to a stop on a red light, it wasn't even 7 am and here he was, being driven to his first school day in who knows how long.
There was a chuckle behind him, without thinking he elbowed slightly the other person, failing miserably.
"Aw c'mon, is not that bad"
Readjusting his grip on Nya, who was seated in front of him he shot a death glare to the person behind.
"Maybe you are used to it Sky, but we haven't attended school in years"
Dramatically he rests his head on his sister's back, Nya chuckles at his theatrics.
Why would anyone want to wake up this early to go learn a bunch of stuff he's inevitably gonna forget in the next 24 hours?
Not him that's for sure, and he knows he's not the only one.
And they had to use uniforms, ugh. Worst thing ever.
"Don't be such a baby"
Kai frowns getting suck out of his thoughts by a very familiar voice,he's offended (not really), but doesn't look up, is pointless, as he knows he can't even see the voice owner.
"Shut up Morro, is not like you're any happier than I am about this"
He might not be able to see him, but he *knows" Morro is shrugging, a shitty grin plastered on his face.
"Yeah but I'm not whining like a bitch"
"Morro don't call him that!" And there he is.
"Awww and what's gonna do baby Lloyd about it?"
"I'm not a baby!"
"You act like one, so clearly you're one"
Lloyd tries to kick the bigger kid as hard as he can is not use, besides he has to keep his grip on Wyldfyre too.
The blonde kid snarls.
"Shut up you fucking-"
"Lloyd"
The kid flinches at the stern voice and stops moving, He doesn't look back.
"Language"
Morro scoffs in amusement. Kai groans.
God, this red light seems to go on forever.
Lloyd can't exactly look at his dad, who is seated right between Nya and Morro(someone has to drive) but he can definitely hold a conversation with him.
"What? Dad!"
"You're nine, no son of mine is gonna talk like that"
"B-But! You're evil incarnate! How come the son of evilness itself can't swear?!"
"Lloyd, you're nine, you're not allowed to swear"
"But the others can?!"
"You're my son, I don't care what the others do, I care about what you do, the others can go jump off of a bridge for all what I care"
There's simultaneous, offended gasps all around the motorcycle.
"What?!"
"Dude!"
"Oh that's low"
"Wow, rude"
"Bitch"
There's a collective moment of silence, before everyone tries to look at Wyldfyre, who just looks up at Lloyd, an innocent smile on her face.
Lloyd looks the most offended he has ever look in his nine year of life in this earth.
He can't help but complain.
"Even Wyldfyre?! She's five! "
Garmadon stays silent for a moment.
He shrugs.
"Wyldfyre's a stray with rabies, I don't really think it matters if she swears or not son"
In front of him Morro let's out a scoff while Lloyd sulks, resting his head on top of Wyldfyre messy red hair.
"Aw, c'mon" He murmurs as the other 6 passengers of the vehicle share a laugh. He keeps on sulking for the rest of the trip.
"Alright I'll be picking y'all at two pm, five minutes tolerance"
There's a collective groan. Skylor just raises her hand.
"I've work after classes so"
"Right, just be home before curfew"
Skylor winks at him, satisfied. There's a murmur of "Why do we even have a curfew time to being with?" That's probably Morro, or Kai.
He addresses the other five kids.
"All of you better be here at two though, if you don't wanna be left behind that is"
"What if we're left behind?" Nya readjusts the straps of her backpack.
"You're spending the night out until you learn to be responsible"
There's a mumbled "We just moved here a month ago, how are we supposed to find a place for the night?!".
It still reaches Garmadon ears, he glares at Kai.
"Ugh, fine"
Yeah no, Morro is having none of that. He combs a hand through his dark hair.
"Why the fuck does Sky get to roam around then?"
"Because she's the only one that it's not a freeloader"
"Well... Uhm... Can I get a job then?" Kai, of course.
"Not until you're 16"
"Are you shititng me?!" A Snarl, Morro is thirteen. THIRTEEN. That's a wait of three fucking years.
Even Kai groans at that. He's just one year short, great.
Nya mirrors Kai's groan, they have the same age afterall so not job for her either.
Wait, Garmadon said two, right?
"Uhm..."
"Yes Kai?"
"Doesn't Wyldfyre ends classes at one?"
"... right"
Did... Did he really forgot about that?!
Red eyes look at the spiky haired teenager before grinning "Well, congratulation! You're now in charge of picking her up and taking her to your classroom for babysitting duty"
Wyldfyre complains with a "I don't need a babysitter" because she's a big girl. Of course she is.
Kai is louder than Wyldfyre in his complains.
"My classroom?!"
"Yes, I'm picking you all together so she's gonna stay an extra hour with you"
"But, the class!"
"Just keep her occupied with drawing or something, as if you're gonna be paying attention to the class anyways"
Busted, Kai rolls his eyes.
"Okay fine, I'll get her at one"
Morro and Nya snicker. Assholes.
With the conversation seemingly over everyone turns around to enter the school-
"Oh and more thing everyone"
Everyone turns around. Again.
"Do NOT use your powers, we're not trying to start a witch hunt"
"But-"
"No buts, I don't care" His voice is low and firm, it sent chills running through their spines "Under no circumstances are you to use those powers, got it?"
A chorus of "Yeah" was heard.
Red eyes glared at Kai, Morro and Wyldfyre.
"You three got that?"
"Sure"
"Whatever"
"Yep!"
Wyldfyre pops the "p" with gusto.
"Alright then, go off now, remember, If you're not here on time I'm leaving you"
"'Kay"
"Bye"
"Whatever"
"See ya' old man"
"Bye Dad! I love you! "
And with that the gang of kids and teens entered the school.
"Uhm, Wyldfyre's classroom is at the other end of the school, let me-"
"I'll take her"
Kai looked up from the small map on his hand.
"You sure Lloyd?"
The kid shrugs.
"Yeah, she's actually like, across my schoolyard so I've to go there anyways."
"Oh, cool, thanks little man... Wait no, I've to pick her up so I'll at least see where it is"
Lloyd shrugged. "Suit yourself"
He looked at his phone before sighing. "Welp, bell's about to ring so like, I guess I'll see you later?"
"Morro where you-"
"This section, uh, one of the classrooms down here..."
"Ok so, ugh wait... Wyldfyre doesn't start classes until nine"
Nya glanced at the obviously very sleepy five year old.
"She can nap until class starts?"
"I can take her" Skylor offered "I don't think my teacher will care much, is first day so everyone will be like, introducing themselves and seeing rules and all that bullshit"
Oh right, ugh...
Kai seemed unsure but eventually just shrugged.
"'Kay, just, come knock I guess?"
"Yeah I'll drop her off at your classroom... Which one is your classroom?"
They looked around, until Nya pointed one, at the other end of Morros classroom.
"I think that's ours"
"That's for middle third years"
"Then..."
"I think is the one upstairs, at the end of the staircase"
"Oh yeah that's for first years"
Skylor nodded, before pointing to the top classrooms too, just besides Nya and Kai classroom.
"Right so, I'm just right beside you in case you need it"
"Oh cool"
"So..."
Morro kicked the concrete floor below them before he too, sighing.
"Guess I'll see you around... Uh... Don't come near me during school hours though"
"I wouldn't dream of" Nya remarked, rolling her eyes, already used to the bad attitude of Morro.
"Yeah yeah, whatever"
He then marched to his designated classroom.
"Well, at least we can be free of him for some hours" Kai readjusted his backpack, this was getting quite tiring and they haven't even started classes.
Nya shot him a playful glare.
"Can't say the same about you Bro."
"Oh, you don't want to spend time with your brother? I'm wounded, I tell you, wounded"
To emphasize his point he dramatically put a hand on his chest and hunched over.
Wyldfyre and Skylor giggled at the theatrics of the boy while Nya just let out a playful scoff.
Sky was the one to burst the comfortable bubble.
"Alright guys, let's go, bells about to ring"
Then she picked Wyldfyre up and started to walk towards the staircase, Nya following.
It was just now, distracted, that Kai seemed to finally take in the new environment.
It was a public school and it was quite noticeable, it had been recently painted, but the classrooms and furniture had definitely seen better days.
There was a lot of people, teens, that were walking around, greeting old friends, lazying around (oh wow, already?") and just going in a out of the classrooms.
Kai wondered, not for the first time, if this was a good idea.
The again they weren't known around here so maybe it was for the best.
"Kai, c'mon"
The namesake turned around, to see Nya waving at him to hurry up, Skylor was already going upstairs, a now sleeping Wyldfyre in her arms.
Kai hurried up to catch with the girls.
They arrived at Kai and Nya shared classroom.
"Alright, as I said I'm right beside yours so just come knock if you need anything"
Then Skylor left for her classroom.
Kai waved a goodbye as Nya entered theirs.
Both sat together in a table, the table were for two students so they would've to share the space.
None took their things out, instead choosing to watch as other students came in.
"Kai, I love you and all that, but I really hope we're not seated together."
Kai scoffed but he got his sister reasoning, they already shared too much, some time separated would be nice.
Instead he laid back, hands on his head as he waited for bell to ring, he clicked his tongue.
" That's fine, you've already invaded my bedroom, I don't need you invading my school table too"
Nya scoffed, lying down her head on her crossed arms, she peeked at her brother blue eyes shining with mirt.
"Well it was that or Morro"
"Ugh"
She snickered.
"He should be glad he's roomed with Sky"
"I mean, anyone else would've killed him"
"Not Lloyd"
"Mhm" She closed her eyes "Not Lloyd indeed"
Conversation died down as class bell rang.
Everone sat down waiting for the homeroom teacher to come in.
As she entered Kai decided he didn't like her, she seemed quite stern and grumpy, great, just great.
"Good morning students, I'm Ms. Grumbmiller and I'll be your homeroom teacher for this year, so first I'll get you seated and then we'll make a dynamic to know each other"
Kai heard Nya growl besides him, he was sure he too had growled in despair, not for the first time on the day he wished to be back home.
He gets seated in the middle road, left far of the classroom, there's no windows so he can't see outside but he's technically close to the yard and he's squished between his class partner and the wall, great.
Speaking of... His pair is a pale lanky boy called Jay Walker, he seems nervous but Kai figures they'll figure it out there stuck like this for the next six months anyways.
Freckles adorned his face, one eye is amber and one is bright electric blue, they send a shiver down Kais spine. His hair is kind of shirt, a reddish brown and full of curls sits above his head like a cleaner birds nest.
Kai ignores the snake tail the boy had, or his fangs, or his slitted eyes.
... Yeah
They fall into an awkward silence, he can sense the other boy is nervous and truth to be told Kai isn't in a mood for casual conversation so they carry on like that.
This is boring and Kai scans the classroom boringly, Nya is on the same road, but squished against the other wall, sad, they wont be able to strike conversations with her so far away.
But she also said they should keep apart some tires, they're still in the same classroom so he figures this is good enough.
And she has already stroked a conversation with her partner, he could see the girl had a bright green hair.
Well, glad to know she was having a good time.
He rests his head on his arms, lying down on the table and closes his eyes.
As Skylor promised she knocked on his classroom door at nine, holding hands with a sleepy but awake Wyldfyre.
It was change of classes so there wasn't a teacher checking on them at the moment, with students going out to the small snack shop the school had, going to other seats to talk with friends or just go to the bathroom while everyone waited for the new teacher to come in no one paid any mind to him going out.
Kai had taken Wyldfyre hand and went downstairs, walking the three school yards it took to arrive to Wyldfyre classroom, the kid complaining loudly about being in school to being with.
He got it he really did, he would've preferred to still live out of the streets if it meant not having to put a foot in a school ever again (not really).
But he was the second oldest and he had to put up a good example, he sighed internally.
Once he had explained her again how this went she had sighed, dramatically (What do you mean she can't bite people that are being rude and annoying?)
Nodding she entered her classroom.
Peking inside it seemed the students had their own individual works spaces unlike him, lucky.
Wyldfyre made sure to hug him and wave a goodbye before he left so everything was good in the world.
As he walked all the way back to his own Kai was able to spot Lloyd, seated at a window, the nine year old didn't caught his gaze, but he seemed to be paying attention so that was good.
Just before going upstairs he peaked onto Morris 'room, he couldn't see him but as he hadn't heard a commotion so he figured Morro was okay.
He went back to classes, it was Math hour, he hoped it would go just like the others.
Turns out they didn't have one hour but two hours of Math, back to back, on Monday.
What the hell.
Kai sighed as he set down his pencil, trying to pay attention to the teacher and failing miserably.
Suddenly theres Math problems in the board and as he look around most are solving them.
Uh...
"Remember you don't have to get them correct, I just wanna see what level of skills you have"
Oh that's good, yeah, yeah that's good.
Kai notices he doesn't know this teachers name... Oh well.
As he starts writing down the problems the teacher speaks again.
"Five more minutes everyone, if you're done come here so I can sign your work, remember this counts towards your final grade"
Kai frowns, he is looking at his notebook, full of small scribbles and doodles, halfway there with just writing down the equations.
Well, there goes the hopes for good grades.
... Is not like he really needs them right?
As long as he doesn't flop classes Garmadon will probably be okay.
"Hey"
Kai turns his head around, meeting Jay eyes as he nervously plays with the hem of his school sweater, trying to keep eye contact.
"Yeah?"
The smaller teen hands him his signed exercises. There's scales on his pale knuckles.
"If you hurry up you can finish copying before class ends."
What.
"What?"
The other teen shrugs, avoiding his gaze.
"I mean, missing it out won't be too bad for your grades but uh... I figured you might appreciate the help since you've been daydreaming all day so far and-"
He starts ramble, motormouth. Kai interrupts him, his running out of time.
" Oh, uhm, thanks buddy"
Jay stops, blinking at him, as if caught doing something he shouldn't be doing.
Cute.
"No problem" And the boy, Jay, sits down again.
The way the other teen says it sounds stiff and polite, Kai has to wonder what's his deal but also, he has just offered him help so he's probably a nice but nervous person.
Kai finishes just in time, he doesn't need to look at Nyas direction to know she's sighing and shaking her head.
He slumps back onto his seat, Jay is not at their table, is the end of the class so he might've just gone to the bathroom, he puts his earphones on as he tries to ignore the next class.
Turns out it was lunchtime, not the break between classes.
Nya had to come and get him.
Everyone has to get off the classroom, whether they brought lunch or not, the homeroom teacher locks the doors and goes to eat who knows where.
Kai and Nya find a spot to sit in front of one of the classrooms from the first floor, Skylor joins them for a quick chat, Morro is back to classes, he had his break 30 mins ago.
"So, how's going for you two?"
"Not that bad" Nya shrugs as she takes a bite off of her sandwich "Things pretty easy"
Skylor nods before curiously looking at Kai who just shrugs.
"I would prefer to be at home"
The redhead scoffs.
"No surprise there"
Nya on the other hand looks at him, thinking.
"You seem to get along just fine with your table partner though"
"Oh, Hot Tamale made a friend?"
"Is not a friend"
"Really? I saw you two having a conversation"
Kai rolls his eyes, before taking another bite of his food. As if a conversation was enough to make a friend.
"Oh, Nya, can you tell me who is it"
"Is..."
Nya looks around the schoolyard, before getting up and pointing.
"That guy, the one with the curly hair and snake tail"
"The shortest?"
"Yeah"
"Oh, he seems like a nice guy"
"He is, let me copy today's Math exercises"
He heard Nya sigh, murmuring an "I'm not surprised", Skylor chuckled.
"You'll do fine then"
With that she patted both siblings on the head, got up and walked towards the small snack store, getting lost in the crowd of teens.
Kai watched her go, idly playing with the sleeves of his uniform. Their 30min breaks was almost over.
This was going to be a long day.
As it turns out they only had three classes left for the day, which was more "Get to know each other" type of bullshit.
Oh an rules, because those are fun.
Kai ignores them, and with one hour each they don't have time to leave them exercises for the day thank the FSM.
Jay seems more animated this time around and he keeps striking small conversations with him when he can.
He talks about Starfarer (wasn't that the comic books Lloyd loved?), about other shows on TV and more geek stuff Kai knows shit about, but he tries to keep the conversations going, he's quite bad at it, but Jay doesn't mind.
Soon enough class is over and Kai gets up to go pick Wyldfyre.
She seems ok, restless but apparently she managed to behave... For now.
He can feel the other eyes on them when they first walk in, that's fine.
The current teacher let's her stay in the back drawing and playing, as long as she doesn't distract the others.
She manages somehow. Maybe because it's the first day.
Jay of course asks who she is, Kai just shrugs, so the pale boy doesn't pursue the topic more.
Class is starting anyways.
Kai turns the volume up.
Turns out Lloyd classes ended 30 minutes before everyone's else, so after trying to figure the Smith Siblings classroom for a few minutes he comes to pick up Wyldfyre.
Kai is glad, she had been trying to nap but he was able to tell she was growing tired of being cupped up here.
Wyldfyre is even more happy because she runs out, leaving her backpack inside.
Kai scoffs typical.
He looks upfront again, he knows by now everyone is curious about the new kids, he ignores it.
After what feels like forever class is over and everyone starts to put their things away, the homeroom teacher is talking about materials or something, he will ask Nya later.
"Hey"
He looks up just to be meet with bright, mismatched eyes.
"What are you gonna bring?"
Uh...
He blinks, confused.
Jay rolls his eyes, smiling.
"Yeah dude to decorate our table!"
They're doing that?
"You don't have to bring anything, we'll, maybe some stickers or whatever you might wanna put about your hobbies, I'll be bringing Starfarer stickers!"
"Oh uh, maybe motorcycles?"
"Oh you like them? That's so cool! Man I wish I had one"
Right, Kai zips up his backpack.
"Hey, just bring your stickers, papercuts or whatever, I'll bring the plastic and paper so don't worry!"
He smiles and with that he leaves the classroom.
This kid is too friendly.
Weird.
Kai shrugs, before going out, grabbing Wyldfyres backpack on the way.
He finds everyone in the yard, waiting for him.
"You take forever to prepare Bro!"
"I didn't took that long"
"You did, I was planning on waiting for you but I got bored" She shrugs.
"Oh wow, thanks for looking out for me sis"
"Anytime" She sticks her tongue out.
Kai nudged her, playfully, before addressing Lloyd.
"How was your day Green Bean?"
The nine year old shrugs.
"Okay, a bit boring but I met some kids that like Starfarer!"
"Oh yeah? Good for you"
"Yep"
He turns to Morro, who has a Wyldfyre happily sitting on his shoulders.
"What"
"Nothing, how was your day?"
"You can guess"
"Any new friends?"
"Oh fuck off"
A teacher that's walking by makes a "Chst" sound, giving them a stern glare.
Nya decides they've been standing here for too long.
"Let's go before Garmadon leaves us here"
"Please" Morro readjusts Wyldfyre so she doesn't fall, he doesn't comment about the small hands on his dark hair. "He wouldn't leave lil' dragon behind"
"So, if we want a ride home we just have to kindap Lloyd?"
"Exactly"
"Hey! I'm right here?!"
"You didn't heard a thing Green Bean"
"Oh I sure did~ I'm gonna tell Dad~"
"If you keep quiet I'll buy you the new Starfarer Issue next weekend"
Lloyd made a thinking face as if he was considering the bribe, but Kai already knew the answer.
"Add some candies to that"
This little-
"I'll give you my dessert tonight"
"Okay deal!"
And with that Lloyd hurried towards the exit doors, leaving Morro, Kai and Wyldfyre behind.
"Really? Nothing interesting today?"
Morro shrugged, as much as possible with Wyldfyre in above that is.
"Eh, questions about me, school stuff and gossip"
"Oh gossip"
"Love stuff and all that"
"Ugh"
"Same mate"
Kai decided to adress Wyldfire too.
"And you Campfire?"
She stuck her tongue out at the nickname, but settled her head above Morros.
"We saw uh, boring stuff"
"You don't remember?"
"Nu-uh"
"Bet you just didn't pay attention"
She shrugged, smiling.
"Maybe"
"Geez I wonder from who she learned that"
"Please, as if you have really paid any attention to your classes"
"Oh I paid more than you that's for sure"
"Oh yeah? Wanna go at it?"
Morro smiled, a wild snarl on his face. Kai was also getting ready to tussle right there (they were still on school ground what the hell-)
Before Wyldfyre slammed both her hands on Morros head.
"OW!?"
"OH!"
She sat upright, almost falling from the tween shoulders.
He snarled a "Don't move so suddenly you rat!"
She ignored him.
"Som'ne mentioned Ninjas"
"Ninjas"
"Ninjas?"
"As in, a TV show?"
"Nah, like, uh... Batman"
"Oh really?"
"Like, vigilantes? Here? In the streets?"
"Yeah"
Morro whistled.
"Now that's interesting"
"Why haven't we seen them then?"
"Maybe they're on vacations"
"I wanna see them"
Kai patted Wyldfyre's head as they finally stepped outside.
"Sure, I'll turn the TV on later"
Wyldfyre batted his hand away.
As they were outside Kai did a quick search around before finding Garmadon with Nya and Lloyd eating some candies from some street vendor.
"Hey! I want candies too!"
"Wyldfyre stop moving!"
"Just put her down dude"
Morro decided that yes, putting Wyldfyre down was better, as he did so she ran off directly to Garmadon.
"Traitor"
Kai chuckled.
"Well, and here I was wondering you three would be passing the night outside"
"Har, har old man, we're still on time"
"Barely"
"Well, we made it didn't we?"
Garmadon moves a hand, dismissing the current topic.
"How was first day?"
"Okay"
"Fine"
"Not bad"
Garmadon rolled his eyes. "How eloquent"
"The usual"
"Mhm"
"Gam'don, do you have candy for us?"
"Sure do Little Campfire, but you'll have to wait until we arrive home"
Wyldfyre deflated.
"Awwww, why?"
"'Cause I've to go out, so I will just leave y'all at home before going out again"
"Oh? We get to have the home alone?"
"Wait what about dinner?"
Garmadon raised an eyebrow.
"You and your sister are 15, Morro is 13, you three can manage cooking and babysitting Lloyd and Wyldfyre"
"I'm not babysitter!"
"I don't need a babysitter!"
"You do Little Campfire"
"Do not!"
"Yeah! Me neither!"
Kai scoffed, because what else could he do? They didn't have that many options anyways. He got into the Motorcycle, sitting in front of Nya.
"Guess we're home alone"
"Yup, and Sky isn't coming until like, eight"
"Oh this is gonna be so fun"
"You bet"
As Garmadon convinced the other three to finally get on the damn Motorcycle so he could drive them home all failed to notice the pair of eyes fixated on them.
