Secretly, Engineer tags along, originally fallowing Spy to bring him back to New Mexico, but gets dragged into this mess.
Chapter 2.
The Teufort airport was the closest, it was quite dingy and outdated, it was also falling apart at the seams, Engineer needed to find spy quickly, he'd probably stick out like a sore thumb here but there was always the chance he could be disguised as someone else, Engineer parked the truck and hopped out, this was just a quick grab and go, as soon as Engineer closed the truck door he heard shuffling in the back of his truck, "who's there?" Engineer said aloud pulling out his pistol from his holster, but he loosened up as he saw Pyros head peek out behind the truck, "Pyro?! The hell you doin all the way out here?" Engineer asked, the gas mask wearing maniac gestured to the back of his truck and pulled out a shotgun and a tool box, they pointed to engineer, "you brought those over for me?" Engineer asked, Pyro nodded happily bouncing up and down, "thanks partner I appreciate it, but I don't need these right now, I'm just gonna grab spy quickly alright." Engineer said, Pyro put them back in the truck.
"Look buddy stay right here, I'll be back." Engineer said hurrying off to the airport, Pyro deflated as soon as he left, Engineer ran through the parking lot dodging cars left and right, he ran through the front entrance of the airport, the airport was quite large, it had two floors and thankfully it wasn't too crowded.
Spy should stick out like a sore thumb if he wasn't disguised, Engineer kept his eyes peeled for him, he got a few odd stares from the employees and visitors while searching, finally his eyes caught Spy, oddly enough he was disguised he was plainly walking around as himself, only difference was he was wearing a fedora and a different suit, he looked ten times more fancier than he did earlier, he was on the escalator heading up, Engineer ran to catch up to the French man but someone grabbed him before he could even get near the escalator.
The person who grabbed him was pyro, "pyro I told ya to wait in the truck." Engineer explained, Pyro shook there head and pointed to where spy was then pointed to him, then gestured around the hole airport, Engineer rubbed his helmet then understood, they couldn't cause too much attention, could end up bad for all of them.
"Alright what do ya suggest we do?" Engineer asked, Pyro then excitedly magically pulled out to suitcases labeled, conveniently ready to go disguises, "that will do."
Spy was heading up the escalator he looked at his watch, he was right on time, first step was complete, get into the airport without causing any attention, next step find a young man with sunglasses dressed in a Hawaiian shirt, not exactly low profile but a few things must've changed while he's been away, Spy stepped off the escalator and began walking to the food court, there he saw the man he was supposed to meet he looked like he just got done with a vacation in some tropical paradise, Spy walked over with a serious business face, and sat down in front of the man, the man wouldn't respond if he didn't say the code word, "la Pomme." Spy spoke, the young man pulled out a briefcase and laid it on the table.
"Hello Agent D, it's a pleasure to meet you." The man said, as he opened the briefcase, "Alright let's get to business, here is all of the information retaining everything about your mission, you'll have a rendezvous with one of our agents, there she'll explain more details about the mission." The man quickly explained while showing Spy all the papers, he proceeded to take them and put them in his own briefcase, which he closed quickly, Spy got everything he needed and now he could board his flight which was leaving in, Spy checked his watch, 5 hours, he had time to kill.
"Many thanks." Spy said, tipping his fedora and heading to the direction of his flight, "hey before you go, can I say that I'm a huge fan of your work." The young man said, "Oh he had a fan, unexpected but not unwelcome, "Seriously, what you did in London was super impressive, like did you actually kill the entire London mafia with a single revolver and 5 bullets?" The man said geeking out, the London mafia thing was..interesting..it was also his last major assignment he was a part of, before he met her..
"Thank you for the praises, but I must go now." Spy said leaving that interesting conversation, the important question now was what to do in 5 hours.
The disguises that were in the suitcases were perfect, well perfect was strong word, casual, Engineer was disguised as a middle age man with a white beard and sunglasses while Pyro just put googly eyes on there masks lenses, which made them look more approachable, they had been following spy for about 2 hours now, approaching him in public would cause a scene and a scene would get them in trouble, they needed to pull him over when he was in a less populated area of the airport, Spy had gone to a lot of different places, he had gone to a food court and ordered a black coffee than headed to a Taylor shop that was for some odd reason in a airport.
Then for the remainder of the time he sat down and read a book, still in public…
Engineer and Pyro were sitting on the opposite side of Spy watching him, Engineer anxiously watched a clock on the wall tick by, they needed to make a move…
The intercom chimed, and the announcer proceeded to say, "Boarding group 5 now heading to France."
Spy looked at his ticket and proceeded to get up and walk in the direction.. Engineers' stomach sank, they waited too long..
"I give you a week." The administrator's voice rang through his head..they had a week.
Engineer got up and ran to the nearest boarding ticket office, unfortunately there was a line a very long line, but it was moving at good pace, Pyro jumped In behind Engineer, "Hudda?" Pyro asked, confused, "we're going to France with him, the administrator told me I have a week to get him back to New Mexico, we're going to France."
Spy knew he was being watched, and the people watching him were being very obvious, he even saw them get up and run somewhere else, he didn't see where they were running but they were running somewhere urgently, Spy shrugged it off and headed to his flight.
Engineer and Pyro had been in the line for about 20 minutes, the announcer came back to announce boarding group 5 leaves in 8 minutes, if Engineer didn't have anything covering his eyes right now everyone would probably point out how bloodshot they looked, if they missed this flight he might as well start digging his own grave, the line moved up and they were next, Engineer sighed with relief, "how can I help you fine gentlemen? Or gentleman and lady?" The ticket agent asked, confused on what Pyro was.
"We need two tickets to France, specifically to France right now." Engineer said,
The agent looked up at the board behind them displaying all the flights available, "sorry all seats leaving for France now are taken, but we can get you on tomorrow's flight-" the attendant stopped as the number of passengers displayed went down by two, "huh that's odd, we'll there's two seats open now must be your lucky day." They handed Engineer two tickets, Engineer took them and ran over to the terminal but not before running into someone, they collided and fell to the ground the Person he ran into had a briefcase and a few papers came out of it, the person he ran into quickly began picking them, Engineer got up "sorry partner." Engineer apologized and continued running, the person glared at him as he ran off.
Spy made it on to his flight without any complications, except for the fact that the people watching him at the airport were now on the plane, they were in the far back though, Spy was riding in economy because, one he couldn't risk causing any attention, two he needed to lay low until he got to France.
Economy was what you could expect, crowded loud and uncomfortable, the seats were cheap and the people next to him were obnoxious, one was an elderly woman who had fallen asleep and was promptly drooling on him, and the other one…the other one was alright, at least he had the window seat, it was fixing to be one long ride.
17 hours into the flight.
Engineer wasn't quite a fan of flying, he usually just took the train to get to where he needed to go, nor had he ever had the need to leave America, this was his first time flying, he wasn't scared of heights he just wasn't used to being crammed into a giant metal tube surrounded by dozens of people and sitting down for hours…how long would be till they got to France?
Engineer sighed uncomfortable being squished between two people Pyro was on his left looking out at the window seat, and there was someone on his right but they weren't paying any attention and were asleep, Engineer put the ticket back in his pocket, he felt something pocking his back, he pulled out whatever it was, turns out it was a piece of paper with some writing on it and a drawing for what looked like a bomb?
The writing was in French so he couldn't read it, the bigger question was how did this get on him, he was pretty sure it didn't come from the base nor did it come from him, he was pretty sure he wasn't planning on constructing a bomb, and this didn't look like Demos work, and no one other than spy could read or write French…and he was fairly confident Spy wasn't in the bomb business.
The suitcase…the person with the suitcase! It came from them! But why? Maybe they worked for Mannco, no they didn't seem like the type…so then..who were they and why did they have notes containing some sort of information about a bomb?
24 hours later.
Engineer had fallen asleep, completely passed out, he jolted awake when the plane landed, it was night when they arrived, Engineer saw Spy get up and walk out to the terminal he got up as well and began fallowing Pyro did as well, Engineer and Pyro finally made it into the terminal, Engineer pushed passed the crowd trying to find Spy, but little did he know Spy was right behind him.
Spy grabbed Engineer by his overalls, his work overalls he didn't even change, Engineer at first was surprised but than realized it was him and pushed Spy's hand off of him, "the hell are you doing here?" Spy asked, he was mad, why did Engineer fallow him all the way out here? He told Demo to tell him he was going away on important business, didn't Demo tell him?
"I could ask ya that very same question, the hell were ya thinkin Spy, you can't just leave your job and go galavanting off in another country!" Engineer sternly said, "if it had been out of state sure alright, but-but France!"
Spy rubbed his brow and sighed, "look it's not that big of a deal I have business that I must attend to here." Spy tried to keep his cool, he should be done with this very quickly, "look I can finish this quickly."
"Spy.. I need ya to get back to New Mexico as soon as possible , if ya don't you'll lose your job and all of us will be held responsible for it." Engineer said in a serious tone, Spy stopped for a moment, he didn't intend on hurting the others in the process of his absence, he thought he'd be the only one to face the consequences, but of course the Administrator would hold them all accountable for his actions, they were supposed to be a team after all, although it seems there efforts as a team have gone down the drain ever since the new Blu team appeared, it didn't feel like a team anymore, it felt more like someone had just gathered up a bunch of idiots with only a few of them having a brain.
They were all technically idiots apart from Spy, he was the exception the only professional on the team, at least that's what he thought.
"I am terribly sorry for causing such an inconvenience but I must complete this mission, I'm afraid you'll have to go back to the administrator with your hands empty." And like he said it left swiftly, at first he didn't feel anything when he left Engineer standing there, but than something tugged on his brain, something shouting at him that he was doing the wrong thing, the right thing though was completing the mission, but then something happened he wasn't expecting to hear.
"Spy!" Engineer called out, Spy stopped in his tracks and looked back, he saw Engineer quickly approaching him and removing his ridiculous disguise, Pyro was also fallowing behind him.
"How long do you think this will take?" Engineer asked, Spy looked confused, "what do you mean?"
"I mean how long will it take you to complete your mission?" Engineer asked again, Spy began counting in his head, "probably a week, but if I work quickly enough 4 days."
Engineer proceeded to straighten his helmet even though it was always slightly crooked, "Alright then, I'm comin with ya."
Engineer hadn't entirely thought this through, which was odd since he never acted out of impulse ever, the closest thing he had ever gotten to as impulse was when Scout and Soldier tried to sit on his sentry and were riding it like a bucking bronco, they broke it of course and he spent the whole afternoon chasing them around the entire base with a wrench, that was kind of like impulse, but this right now was impulse, pure impulse, first he needed to make a few phone calls.
Spy lead him to the nearest phone booth and gave him some euros to deposit into the phone, Engineer went into it and began dialing, he stood there for a little bit waiting for someone to pick up, and then she did, "have you secured the Spy?" The Administrator asked, Engineer gulped and took a deep breath, "No Mam…I'm in France right now."
Engineer could feel the Administrator seething with rage and impatience on the other end, "so you fallowed him to France, but you still don't have him?"
"No Mam, you said I have a week to get him back, I can assure ya it will be less than a week, I'll be back with Spy in a couple of days." Engineer explained.
"You better not be using this as an excuse for a Vacation, Like I said earlier, you have 1 week if you're not back within that time frame your entire team will be fired." With that she hung up, Engineer thought that went well, he then dialed one last number.
Again he waited for a bit than someone picked, he heard Demos booming laugh on the other end, "this is uh..Red bread, we sell bread, not actual Red bread, they told me to clarify that part, anyway what an I get ya?"
Engineer was impressed someone was actually using the fake company greeting, everyone usually just answered by saying hello or you have the wrong number, or in Soldiers case greeting someone meant aggressively shouting and yelling until the person on the other end hanged up, "Demo it's Engineer." Engineer replied.
"Where have you been mate? You've been gone for an entire day!" Demo said concerned, "I know, I'm in France right now, you and Heavy are in charge until I get back." Engineer explained, he could tell Demo was confused, "just make sure the respawn rooms working and Soldier doesn't teleport any bread." Engineer explained one more time.
"Ok first, when will you be back and Second why is Soldier still teleporting bread?" Demo asked.
"I'll be back in a couple of days, and just keep an eye on Soldier-" Engineer was cut off from his explanation by someone tapping on the glass of the booth, Engineer turned and saw Spy pointing to a watch around his wrist displaying the time, telling him to hurry up.
"I gotta go, y'all be careful." Engineer said while hanging up, he put the phone back on the receiver, admittedly he was worried about leaving his team for a couple of days, and a bunch of what if scenarios started playing in his head, what if Blu decided to attack them, what if Soldier was left unsupervised with his teleporters, what if- Engineer shook his head, he couldn't think like that right now, not if he wanted to drive himself completely off his rocker, Engineer walked out of the telephone booth, "are you sure you still want to come?" Spy asked while Engineer closed the booth door.
"My mind ain't changing any time soon, and I can't exactly go back to America empty handed." Engineer said, Spy looked at him with an amused face then laughed to himself, "What?" Engineer asked, Spy took out his cigarette and dropped it on the ground and stomped it out, "oh nothing." Spy started, "it's just, you might stick out like a sore thumb here." Spy then began walking towards the airport exit, and Engineer gestured towards Pyro, who was sitting down trying to light a magazine on fire with a lighter, "what do you mean by stick out?" Engineer asked, "oh you'll see." Spy said, and when they walked out the door, Engineers eyes widened behind his googles, as he looked around they were in another world.
Engineer knew he was going to France specifically Paris, which was supposed to be fancy, but this was another level of fancy, it was night and the city seemed to be glowing in a golden light, the streets were clean unbelievably clean, and everyone and he meant everyone was dressed like it was the 20s, men in suits and hats, Women with frilly dresses and fancy jewelry, even the cars were from the 20s, everything was from the 20s, it was like he was in some sort of post card preserved for years.
"Welcome to Paris, Laborer." Spy announced with a level of enthusiasm Engineer wasn't expecting, "now stay close, we must get moving."
Spy gracefully walked on ahead through the crowd, he blended right in to the sea of silk suits and fancy hats,Pyro skipped right behind Spy while Engineer awkwardly navigated through the crowd of people, He could feel them watching him, yup Spy was right he did stick out he was a fish out of water here, they came to what looked like a hotel spy stood at the entrance and looked at pyro and engineer, "alright before we go in, If anyone asks you who you are, you tell them that you're my assistants." spy instructed, Engineer couldn't help but wonder what spy was apart of, he had put the pieces together that Spy was apart of some secrete organization, but what his job was he wasn't to sure about, whatever this mission was, it was something else..something deeper.
Spy remembered this building quite and quite fondly, lots of memories had been made here, some happy, some tragic and some triumphant, the last memory he had of this place was quite somber, now he was hopping to claim a good memory of this place…and not an embarrassing one, which would be hard to do since he had a Pyromaniac and hard hated southern laborer right behind him, Spy shook that feeling of dread off and walked in the door, inside was a motel, a shabby little place that was disguised quite well, the walls are an ill pale green and were molding, it smelled wet and damp, and the carpet bellow was stained with a liquid he didn't want to know what spilt it or stained it, at the back of the room was a counter with a bell and cigarette tray with half used cigs in it still faintly smoking, Spy walked up and tapped the bell, out from under the desk came a man with a poorly grown mustache and red eyes suggesting he was a little more than high, "what can I help you with?" surprisingly the man spoke english he sounded british, "sous la lune." Spy said in french, the man at the front counter squinted his eyes closely, "ah your one of those agent guys." the man said.
"Indeed so they already told you i'd be here?" Spy asked, the man nodded "yeah they told me to keep an eye out for a Agent D told me you were here on important business, not sure who the other two are." the man said looking over spy's shoulder, Spy looked behind him and saw Pyro tearing out pages of a magazine with some questioning images while laughing like a child, meanwhile Engineer had accidentally knocked a cheap painting off the wall but instead of hanging it back he had decided to completely re hang it by pulling out a hammer and banging a new nail into it, than he re hung it and kept trying to adjust it till it was perfect…was Engineer a perfectionist? Huh maybe he did have a little in common with him..
Why was he thinking that? Why was his brain getting side tracked, he shook his head, "Ignore them." Spy awkwardly said "there with me." Spy gave Engineer a look trying to tell him to behave, Engineer finally satisfied with the paintings adjustment stared at Spy with an accomplished bucked toothed grin, Spy was begging to regret bringing them along, "Anyway im here for information about the contact." the man pulled out a folder labeled top secret, Spy took it, "Merci." Spy said than headed for the exit, Engie and Pyro fallowed after him, Spy stopped outside they stopped as well, "I need you two to behave." Spy said, Engineer looked at Pyro, Pyro looked at Engineer, "Id say we behaved quite well in there." Engineer argued, "do you call ripping pages from a book while laughing behaved?" Spy asked with an exaggerated expression, Engineer just looked at him, Spy couldn't tell what Engineer was thinking behind his goggles, Spy sighed, "look just act normal can you do that?" Spy asked, Engineer nodded, "I can act normal its Pyro on the other hand who might have a little trouble…" Spy looked behind-well he looked over engineer and saw Pyro trying to catch some fireflies, "just keep an eye on him." Spy asked Engineer, Spy continued walking he pulled out the file and opened it inside were 3 pictures one of a women with dirty blond hair a fedora, trench coat and sunglasses along with a purple and teal scarf, the second picture was of a cafe and the third was of her in the cafe window sitting down and reading a book.
"Do ya know her?" Engineer asked Spy to jump a bit when Engineer stood next to him, there arms were almost practically touching, Spy awkwardly stepped to the side, Engineer didn't notice him acting odd thankfully, "uh no, but apparently she's with the agency." Spy said, "So she's an ally", Spy approached the cafe and entered and walked up to the lady and said "Bonjur" while he tipped his fedora, She looked up smiled and put her book down and Spy noticed its title 'The guide to headshots' written by…Mundy?! Apparently Sniper had a book…charming… "You must be agent D, it's such a pleasure to finally meet you." She cheerfully said, "who are your…companions?" she asked, looking at Engineer and Pyro, "My assistants." Spy said, "Howdy." Engineer said with a buck toothed grin, why did Spy agree to them coming along on this mission with him?
"Anyway shall we discuss business?" Spy said, "of course" the lady said while she pulled out some pictures, she evenly laid them out on the table, "these are the photos I was able to take."
Spy closely looked at them, one photo was a darkly lit warehouse, another was of a boat at a dock with two men in black coats looking suspicious, and another was of a group of men in the warehouse of the first picture discussing something with a man in a top hat and the men behind the top hat guy were holding guns, definitely some illegal activity happening there, and those were all the pictures, "so will be starting here?" Spy asked, she nodded, "it's down south of France, take the main road and you'll end up there though getting past the security is bloody difficult, they really don't want people getting in there.." she warned, Spy shrugged, "The security won't be the difficult part, getting in will be easy, getting out is another story…what are we looking for here?" Spy asked, "Hopefully you'll be able to listen in to one of their meetings and gather enough information to figure out where to go next." She said while crossing her arms, "but knowing your reputation, you'll be out of there quickly."
Spy tipped his fedora again, "Thank you, will be on our way now." Spy said while walking out, Engineer followed behind while Pyro waved bye to her and she waved back with a smile.
"So how are we gonna get all the way down south?" Engineer asked, adjusting his helmet, "I'll rent us a car, but in the meantime please do something about…them." Spy said pointing to Pyro, who was trying to catch a firefly that had flown away from its group and had unpleasantly become the object of fascination to a psychotic freak, Engineer looked at Spy with a sour face, "Why? they haven't done anything harmful, as of yet…" Engineer added that last part quickly, "Laborer you already stick out like a sore thumb here." Spy explained gesturing to his entire look, Engineer scowled, Spy tried to ignore it, "Pyro sticks out even more than you do, I think it's best if we leave them here." Spy instructed while lighting another cigarette, the Engineer sighed, "Alright I see your point…" Engineer approached Pyro, "Hey pal…" Engineer said as if he was talking to a toddler, "You're gonna have to stay here for a little bit….", Pyro cocked its head, confused by what Engineer meant, Engineer put his gloved hand on Pyros shoulder, "Will be back, but just stay here and don't cause trouble alright?" Engineer said as he quickly walked away like he was leaving a puppy behind, Spy sighed a rolled his eyes, the other mercs were also overly emotional, which was highly unprofessional, they got emotional over the smallest of things as well, made Spy laugh a little, Spy lead the way while Engineer followed waving back at Pyro who still didn't understand what was happening, the nearest car rental place was a couple miles away, and from there step one of the mission will have been completed.
