A kingdom doesn't take vacations, least of all its rulers. Since Ben took over the crown, he has never taken a vacation. The only time he was away from the crown was two years ago, thanks to Agatha. This weekend will be two days off, which hasn't happened for a long time.
"Dad, you know what to do, right?"
He spoke to Adam at the moment of his departure.
"Ben, you know I ruled this kingdom before you, don't you?" Adam spoke to his son, causing Mal to laugh. "Go, before I regret it. You won't have it so easy from now on."
"Go before he changes his mind."
Belle almost threw her son out of the castle.
Mal can't believe it. Ever since she started sharing responsibilities with Ben, she hasn't known what rest is. The trip to Paris is considerably quick. They would be in the French capital by the end of the day.
"Two days just us? Is that a dream?"
He asked jokingly to the girl lying on his shoulder in the limousine.
"Honestly, I can't believe it."
She revealed with a smile that showed her dimples.
"When did you start planning this?"
He asked, trying to think of any free time she'd had recently.
"Our last fight." They don't fight often, but they aren't living the dream marriage either. "A king doesn't walk away from his people," challenged me." She repeated the phrase, trying to sound like him when she is nervous.
"I don't talk like that."
"You should see yourself in your beast mode."
She laughed just remembering him being nervous.
"Is it that bad?"
" I think it's cute."
"You're weird Mal."
"Hey! You're the one who wanted to marry me."
"Yes." He kissed her shiny wedding ring. "I don't regret a day of it."
The two of them walked the rest of the way like that, in perfect harmony and silence. They fell asleep a few minutes later, something they don't do very frequently. Between leaving the castle, the limousine, the airport, the plane and finally their final destination, sleeping is the most fun part.
"Explain to me again why I can't use teleportation?"
Mal questioned, throwing himself on the bed when they finally arrived at the hotel.
"Because we're a normal couple."
He said, as he put his suitcases in a corner of the room.
"Normal couple? We've spoken to five different reporters, and we haven't set foot here in fifteen minutes."
Although Mal said that, France would certainly be very different from the other allied kingdoms. At least so far, they haven't seen the excitement at the presence of the king and queen that they have seen in Auradon and other provinces.
"Stop complaining and come see this place." He pulled her out of bed, showing her the wonderful view they have from the bedroom. "Isn't it beautiful?" He stood like that, hugging her and enjoying the beautiful view of France.
"Yes, it is beautiful."
Mal doesn't know all the places in the kingdom yet, although they are all beautiful to her, she felt that Paris has a special air about it.
"So, do you have a plan?"
"Sure, it starts with me pulling you into the bathroom like this." She pulled him by the tie, and he didn't even try to protest. "Then by taking off this suit." She said as kissed the boy's neck. "Then kissing you like this."
"I loved the start of this trip."
"It can get better."
The two went on like this until the end of the first day's journey, and this intense tension and peace could have continued, but…
"Thank you for this gift."
Ben thanked her and planted a kiss on the purple hair of the woman lying on his chest.
"Yeah, it is a present for me too, so it's a present from us."
"Oh, before I forget, I was so excited about your present, and yesterday I was also so tired of receiving congratulations that I didn't give you my present."
"Your present?" She turned to him, resting her chin on his chest, "You know it is your birthday, right?"
"Our anniversary." He got up and went to his bag to get a small package. "Here." She carefully opened the present and saw a beautiful necklace with little hearts around it. "There are all our important dates, dating, Cotillion, hidden wedding and your coronation."
"And these hearts with nothing on them?"
"They're future dates, you know? Wedding anniversaries, children." She gave him the old smile and asked him to put the jewel on. "Mal, can I ask you a question?" She nodded. "Why is it that whenever the subject of children comes up, you make this face?"
"What do you mean?"
She knows what he's talking about, but she really wants to avoid it.
"That this is a forbidden subject for you." Her silence is causing him anxiety at the moment. "Mal?"
All she can think of is how to broach the subject with him.
"It's not that… it's just that… I don't think about children."
She got out of bed, pulled back the sheet, and tried to talk about it out loud this time.
"I'm not thinking about it now either, but I will at some point. Maybe three years from now."
He stood up behind her.
"No Ben, I don't think about children, I don't think I ever imagined it, actually."
She confessed, turning to face him.
"Wow!"
He let go of her waist and sat down on the edge of the bed.
"You see? This is why I don't want to talk about it."
Seeing his current countenance is a reason to avoid the subject.
"At some point, we are going to talk."
He answers in a louder tone than usual.
"Ben, I just don't think I want to take responsibility for someone else."
She walked over to him, running her hands over his face.
" I understand."
He removed her hands from his face and stood up.
" Are you angry?"
"No, surprised, upset, maybe."
"Ben …"
She rolled her eyes, feeling all his anxiety coming over her.
"It's just…" He hates not being able to express himself clearly. "I've always imagined myself as a father, having children of our own, that's all."
"Ben… I… no. It's just that there's so much in my life that I didn't plan, and it just happened."
"Like me?"
"Not like this, Ben." She scolded him, watching him use words he hadn't said. He stood up to avoid a fight. "Oh no. We always discuss things, and you're not going off like that." She went after him.
"What do you want to talk about? You don't want children, okay. I'm not the one who's going to try to convince you, Mal, we know that nobody does that."
He said, trying not to sound angry.
"What? We always talk it over and see what's best for both of us."
Five years ago, she would have been the one to run away.
"Not about this, Mal! Tell me how I convince the queen of stubbornness about something? Especially about this? You don't want children? Okay! Then I'll deal with the council and…"
The last topic isn't part of this conversation and came out unintentionally.
" Council? Is that why you want a child? Because of another ridiculous tradition."
It is official, she is nervous now.
"What? Ridiculous tradition? You know this kingdom only exists because of it, don't you?"
"Oh, right, and I have to abide by something else in the rule books."
"No! You do what you want, Mal."
He stormed out of the bathroom, leaving her grunting with rage.
Later, he got out of the bath and went straight to bed, turning to his side and her in the same way. In the early hours of the morning, he woke up feeling a chill coming on and when he looked over the side of the bed, he was surprised when he didn't find his wife.
"Mal?" He looked for her in the darkness of the bedroom, but only saw her on the balcony, sitting in a chair looking out over the city center. "Mal?"
" Hi?" She is startled by him standing there in front of her in just his sweatpants. "I'm sorry if I woke you up."
"You don't wake me. Are you crying? Hey, Mal, look at me." He knelt down to see her face. "Mal?"
"It's just the cold, that's all."
He lied, swallowing his pride.
"Is it because of the fight earlier? Forgive me, okay? I don't want to have children because of anyone, let's forget about it, please."
"No, Ben, having children is a dream of yours, and you're the one who says that dreams can't be forgotten. Ben, look, you're the king and even if you don't want to you're always subject to various things and I know that marriages less than a year old are easy to annul…"
"Don't even finish. Mal, hey!" He walked over and sat down on the chair, making room for her to sit on his lap. "You're my dream, always have been and always will be. I'll never give you up." He wiped the water from his face. "I think it would be nice to have a little purple-haired thing walking around." Mal laughed. "But, I can't do without you, Mal."
"Purple hair?"
"Yeah, I've always wondered what a little boy with purple hair like yours and my sense of humor would be like." She let out a laugh, trying to see this scene, "What's so funny? It's a combination."
"If you say." She pulled him into a kiss again. He picked her up and carried her to the bed again, but he stopped and watched her as he analyzed. "What?"
"I just want you to know that I chose you forever. When I gave you that signet ring, I truly believed that the two of us are forever, Mal."
"You're unique to me, too. Forever."
