The One Who Came Back
Interlude 9
After weeks of travel, the journey was nearly over.
"You've changed, you used to be nice."
"Really?"
"No! Now you're even nicer, Shorty. You talk more, you're more relaxed, you seem like a different person."
"Maybe it's because I've lifted the weight of that secret."
"See, in the past, you would have told me to shut up. Now, you're quite reasonable."
"Oh, shut up, you musclehead," Evileye said, kicking Gargaran's shin.
"And there she is, back to her old self," her friend laughed as she rubbed her leg.
One of the twins was driving the carriage, with Lakius sitting beside her, while Gargaran and Evileye were in the back. Evileye looked at her friends. It had been decades since she'd gone so long without her mask. She could freely see their eyes, their hair blowing in the wind and shimmering in the sun, the sweat running down their faces, the blood flowing in their veins. The thirst still came, with less intensity now that she ate regularly, but the temptation was strong. She kept smiling as she tried to think of something else, but the only memory that came was of the first day of
The vampire who took charge of her education was named Shalltear Bloodfallen. She claimed to be the Minister of Transportation for the Sorcerer King and said she was there to be her teacher. There was no reason to doubt her words. After her first meal, she set her free.
"All right, girl, you can clean up and return to your friends. We'll meet in a new place tomorrow."
"You made me kill someone... drink his blood."
"As if you'd never killed a human before. Besides, I didn't do anything; it was your choice. You could have killed him without biting."
"You... the Lady told me not to use my hands and feet."
"And she told you to be creative. You could have given him a headbutt, used a spell, or sat on his head until he suffocated. You chose to bite him."
Evileye dropped her jaw.
"Yo... the Lady would have stopped me."
"You'll never be sure of that, Hi! Hi! Now go, my student. I have things to do-arinsu."
Upon arriving at the camp, the vampire sat on a log. The scent of her friends made her sweat profusely, her throat parched, her nails digging into her hands, constant trembling, and an overwhelming urge to feed. It wasn't the uncontrollable frenzy of her first transformation but more like an addict taking their first dose after years. Furthermore, bats can drink 200% of their body weight in a single night; a skinny human wouldn't satisfy her hunger.
It was a challenging night where her willpower was put to the test, and she fought as hard as she could. In the end, every animal within a one-milles radius of the camp lay dead. They didn't taste the same, but it was enough to quench her thirst.
"We've arrived! Get ready; we're in E-Rantel." Lakius said, snapping the vampire out of her thoughts while the other twin collapsed beside her.
They entered a long line until they reached the gate, where the carriage was inspected, and they all got off for customs inspection. Their visit was to learn about the Sorcerer Kingdom and, if necessary, gather information for potential allies, according to Lakius' plans. But since Evileye had revealed her true nature, she had insisted on trying to see more things from a different perspective. They all imagined she wanted to contact Momon, for obvious reasons.
Inside a room, they waited for the mandatory acclimatization workshop for new visitors. That's when they saw the Demon Maid standing in the middle of the room. They all thought it was an ambush and tried to draw their weapons, but none of them had any. Everything had been surrendered before they entered.
Entoma stared directly at them and maintained her gaze the whole time. No one moved or blinked. Then the door opened, and people who had just finished their session came out, including two smiling girls who threw themselves into the arms of the maid.
"Oneesan! Oneesan! VULPES!"
The Maid removed her mask, something she had been doing much more frequently lately, kissed the girls as they hugged a young fox girl. Entoma turned her gaze back to the Blue Roses, and Evileye remembered what she had said to her that one time, "Who would want a monster like you with the smell of blood around?"
At that moment, a tall, handsome young man approached, hugged the maid, and kissed her.
"INTA IS KISSING ONEESAN, INTA IS KISSING ONEESAN, THEY'RE GETTING MARRIED! THEY'RE GETTING MARRIED!" the children sang childishly.
The Blue Roses watched in astonishment, and Evileye was sure that the Demon Maid, during all the time she had been looking at them, had been smiling in victory.
