Chapter 0: The Academic City
It's said that The Academic City is 20 to 30 years ahead of the rest of the world in term of technology.
The majority of the population is made up of students, nearly 80% to be precise.
Thanks to their advanced scientific program, the creation of espers has been made possible: ranging from level 0 to 5, these individuals are endowed with abilities as varied as they are unique, defying the laws of physics.
This is the strength of The Academic City.
"Seriously... don't they have anything better to do than play mad scientist?" Reigen sighed, setting down the explanatory brochure on the City.
The self-proclaimed best psychic of the 21st century slumped back in his chair, weary, if only he had a customer...
"Maybe choosing to set up a paranormal services office in the City of Sciences wasn't the best idea in the world," said Dimple with a disapproving expression.
The spirit had taken up residence in the Medium's home. Although originally an evil spirit, the ghost was now assisting Reigen in his job as exorcist.
Reigen pouted.
"The rent is criminally low... what's more, thanks to those idiots from Claw I didn't get any compensation whatsoever after they burned my old office to the ground... the system really is unfair!"
It's true that, following an attack by the claw henchmen, Reigen had lost his offices, but as this was an unusual event, his insurance didn't cover it, leaving the medium in the lurch.
In the wake of this terrible disaster, the self-proclaimed Psychic had been desperate to find a way to get his workplace back, even begging his mother for some money. A rather humiliating experience.
But against all the odds, a solution presented itself in the form of a modest practice for rent in Academic City, the rent being ridiculously cheap.
What's more, his sister worked in the City of Sciences and had been able to obtain all the necessary authorizations for Reigen to come and live in the Academic City, it was even rather frightening how efficient she had been!
The place was rather dingy and Reigen had spent days making it acceptable, it wasn't as good as his old office, but at least he had somewhere to work and stay, having had to cut costs considerably he'd given up his apartment in the Seasoning City.
The problem...Academic City was perhaps the worst place for Reigen to flourish: no spirits to exorcise, no curses to lift, no superstitious customers... Things were looking bleak.
In addition, two of its key employees were not available at the moment.
Mob was about to start studying in the Academic City and wouldn't be able to help Reigen as often as before, while the newly recruited Serizawa still had business to settle with his family and couldn't be present for a few weeks.
So Reigen found himself with just Dimple for company for the time being.
Not the best situation for his business.
Without a real Psychic, he couldn't take on exorcism jobs that were too complex or dangerous and had to make do with odd jobs and tasks.
And that's if he could find even one customer.
"The rent may be very low, but if you can't find customers how do you expect to pay it every month?" Dimple replied.
Reigen was doubtful.
The young man had tried to replicate the same business pattern that he had followed for years in his old place of work. But after 2 weeks, without a single customer. A change of tactics was in order.
Maybe he needed to be more proactive in his strategy, if customers weren't coming to him maybe he needed to go directly to customers.
"I need to walk a bit, let's go to town!"
Reigen stood up, donning his classic gray jacket and readjusting his purple tie.
Dimple didn't seem very enthusiastic.
"A change of air can't hurt." Admitted the spirit, not quite convinced.
"I wonder how Mob is doing on his first day in this City," Reigen expressed.
One of the reasons Reigen had also settled in this city was that his young disciple, the natural psychic Shigeo Kagayama, had chosen to transfer to a new school here, and Reigen was keen to stay close to his pupil so he could guide him. And to continue using his gifts for his business, even if the young pupil was going to be much less available than before.
"I hope he's not overdoing it, all this must be really stressful for him," continued the medium.
"Ritsu's with him, I think he'll be fine, he's already changed a lot since I met him." replied the spirit.
Reigen began to smile.
That was one thing he agreed with.
This is a translation of my crossover, the original is in French and will take priority but I will do my best to translate and update it.
Keep in mind that I am not at all a professional translator and while I am fluent in English this is not my native tongue, so expect some weird expression and grammar error from time to time.
As stated in my original version, this was inspired by Ahsoei crossover and I took some idea from it.
If you have any criticism, idea or question, don't hesitate to comment! Thank you for reading my work!
