Adam was awake looking at Kim as she slept. He had been awake for awhile now and didn't want to wake her. He knew she needed to sleep. And she looked peaceful. Adam helped her get her boots on and secured over her pant legs. She definitely needed help with that. He then helped her get the sling on before she headed back to brush her teeth.
After they were both fully ready for the day they headed to check on the kids. "Um what are you two doing?" Kim looked at both her kids playing in the floor with their toys. Well let's go potty and then get you two dressed for the day. Then breakfast!" Kim got the kids into the bathroom, one on the toilet and one on the training toilet. When they finished Kim helped them to wash their hands and then brought them back to their room. Adam was still in their room where he picked their outfits for the day.
He helped Kim change the kids into their outfits before they headed downstairs for breakfast. He helped her prepare breakfast which was tough with the cast in a sling. After the kids were fed they got the kids in the car and headed towards the daycare. Adam followed behind her so he could help with the kids. Two kids and one good arm is a bad mix. They parked and got the kids into the daycare. "Okay I have to head into work. Take care today. And thank you so much for trusting me earlier. I know you were scared but you were beyond brave. Kim drove off to the stables as Adam headed to the district. Adam arrived and headed in jogging to not be late. He passed by the front desk seeing Platt giving him the evil eye. He just ignored her, he didn't have time for that. As he entered the bullpen he noticed he was the last one there but luckily he was still on time with one minute to spare. "Morning!" Adam announces as he gets in. "Morning. How's Burgess?" Kevin asked. "Um she's good. When I just left her she was headed to the stables to pet her favorite horse and then do something for herself. Whatever she decides to do." Adam replied shrugging off his jacket.
"Wait did you stay over?" Erin asked. "Um yeah but it's not what you think. We talked after the kids were in bed and then she feel asleep in my arms. I went to leave but she asked me to stay. And yes I showered at her place today, alone." Adam defended himself and Kim really. "What did you guys talk about? If you can tell us?" Antonio asked. "Turns put her family is just as bad as Paul was. She disconnected from them at the same time her marriage fell apart. I'm shocked she's still standing." Adam answered walking to get a coffee. "Wait Paul? Is that the ex husband?" Jay asked. "Yeah. She mentioned that her sister is divorced too and over 10 years later she still calls him the ex. Kim feels like it gives him too much power over her. So she's not doing that. I can't really understand it but if it makes her feel better about it all then cool." Adam made his coffee before heading back to his desk.
"Alright we have a case! And we are one man down so let's keep this tight and clean." Voight added as he entered the room. "Gang bangers shot in rival territory. Let's gear up and head out. We need to check pod footage, do knock and talks and go over the crime scene. Let's go!" Voight explained as they headed to roll up. The team moved out quickly as possible heading to the scene in pairs. As Adam rode beside Al he looks at his phone looking at the photos that Kim was sending him. She had sent several photos of her with Blackjack and even a photo of her riding the horse. The sling was off which he didn't love but the bright smile was wide and that allowed him to relax. They arrived on scene seeing the ME had already arrived.
It didn't take long for the team to realize no one wanted to talk to the cops. So it was a slow process. They were going to have to rely heavily on pod footage. No one in the area had door cameras so that was not an option. They headed back with not much information hoping Mouse had found something. As they arrived back at the district Mouse was still hard at work trying to find who the killers were but had been able to identify the two dead gang banger. The team got to work looking into arrest records and known associates. It was long boring work but it was always best to know who you were up against in and out. As the worked the day got later and no one realized how late it had gotten till the gate opened.
"Um are we expecting anyone?" Antonio asked being closest to the door. "Not that I know of." Erin stated as she saw Platt coming up the stairs with her arms full of food and drinks. Right behind her was Kim and the kids with more drinks for the team. "What's all this?" Adam asked shocked to see them. "Well I knew you guys were knee deep in a case and probably forgot to eat so I brought food and drink for everyone. And the kids wanted to say hi so here we are." Kim answered as the kids ran around the room hugging everyone. "Well this is a very nice surprise. I'm not sure when we will finish this case so I'm really happy to you all." Adam hugged her tight. "I figured that too. So how's it going?" Kim asked worried by the stress lines on his face. "Slow but we are getting there." Adam shrugged not really about how they were doing. "Well eat something and get some kiddo hugs. It helps I promise." Kim offered the advice as her more to talk to other people before heading into the office.
"Hey boss. Got a minute?" Kim asked before entering his office. "Yeah what's up?" Voight asked confused seeing her there. "Um I just wanted to know how long I'm off for. Adam said a couple of days but that's not a real answer." Kim sat down on the couch resting for a bit. "Well I think Monday would be good. Unless you need longer." Voight wasn't sure which since Kim was still new and this was her first injury. "I was hoping to be back sooner. I hate being off and I'm fine to work a desk. You need the help. Let me work, please." Kim begged. Being off with nothing to do was killing her and she felt fine. She needed to work. "Fine tomorrow you can come back but strictly desk duty. You are not going on the streets like that." Voight pointed to her cast. "That's fine! Thank you. Also we brought food. There is a sandwich and a drink you in the bullpen." Kim pointed to her desk where all the food was. "Thank you that was very kind of you." Voight got up and hugged her before heading to grab some food. He of course got the only thing left but he was happy to have something at that point.
"Alright everyone we are leaving. Kids say goodbyes to the team and we are headed home." Kim watched the kids run around giving hugs to everyone before coming to stand next to her. "How about I walk you guys out? I'm sure you will need help with the car seats." Adam followed them down the stairs before looking down at the kids. "One of you had to take my hand as we cross the street." Adam stared letting them choose. Mia reached up taking his hand easily as they walked towards the car. "Babies say bye to Adam." Kim stated as the kids jumped up for hugs. He held them both at once giving them big hugs. "Alright hopefully I will see you guys later tonight. If not I promise I will see you both tomorrow. Be good for your momma okay?" Adam placed them each in the car as Kim buckled them in. "Okay we be good! Bye Adam!" Milo said waving goodbye. "Bye Adam!" Mia waved bye as she sat back in her seat. "Bye kiddos!" Adam waved as he closed the door.
"Well i guess it's my turn for a hug goodbye?" Kim joked. "Oh you get much more!" He leaned down to give you a very passionate kiss holding her tight. "I think that was enough to hold me over till I see you again. By the way I'm back to work tomorrow." Kim was giddy about getting back to work. "Well I hope I see you tonight but I will most definitely see you tomorrow." Adam kissed her again before allowing her to leave. He watched till her car was out of sight. As he headed back in to the bullpen he saw Platt giving him the evil eye. "Sergeant Platt. That's twice today. What can I do for you?" Adam asked her with the most annoying sarcastic smile he could muster. "What is going on with you two?" Platt asked him annoyed already. "Taking things slow. She's had it rough for a long time. She needs a lot of time and understanding. Each time she opens up it breaks my heart. I just want to support her and kids anyway I can. That's all." Adam's head hung low. "You are doing good Ruzek. Just keep it up." Platt shooed him away after that.
"Alright we got a name! Suit up let's go!" Voight yelled as Adam ran up the stairs. They all ended to roll up to get the vests on and gear up. They headed towards the suspect listen to Voight go over all the intel. Mouse sent a photo if the suspect the team so they who they were looking for. Adam texted Kim to let her know they were rolling out on a suspect. He hoped he would get to Kim's tonight but he had to stay focused. As they arrived everyone stayed focused on their main target. They took position around the house and prepared to infiltrate the home. "We aren't waiting for him to run. Not making that mistake again. We all go in hot!" Voight called at just before they entered the home. "Breach! Chicago PD!" Atwater yelled at he kicked in the door. They went through different doors as they started to search the home.
As they searched the home the team heard movement upstairs. Half the team ran up the stairs to find the suspect. "Chicago PD! Stop running!" Jay yelled as they ran towards the foot steps. Adam and Erin right behind him. As they entered the room a fight broke out. Jay was thrown against a wall but Jay punched him throwing the suspect off guard. He took off towards the balcony. Adam followed hot on his trail while Erin checked on Jay. As Adam grabbed onto the suspect he started to fight Adam off. He held on stronger not letting the suspect get away. As they fought they crashed through the railing causing them both to fall to the ground. Jay and Erin were at the edge in second to see if they were okay. Antonio and Kevin were in the yard within seconds to prevent further injury and prevent the suspect from getting away.
"Ruz! You okay?" Kevin asked checking his friend over for injuries. "Yeah I'm good. Just sore. Let's finish this case." Adam groaned as he got up from the yard. "Good cause Kim's gonna kill you when she sees you like this." Kevin laughed taking in his friends appearance. "Yeah I know but I got lucky today. Let's head out." Adam shuddered thinking about Kim seeing this. "Ruzek! You okay?" Voight asked as they met near the cars. "Yeah Im good boss. Ready to finish up so I can head home." Adam got in the car and headed towards the district. When they arrived the suspect was thrown in a holding cell while Adam got an ice pack for his shoulder. Now the adrenaline wore off his shoulder was starting to hurt. He must have landed it on when they crashed.
He wrote up his reports and didn't even wait for the case to be finished. He headed out the door and headed right towards Kim's. He didn't even call he just needed to see her. As he drove all he thought about was Kim. He pulled up outside her house and took a minute to calm himself before leaving the car. He took his time walking towards the door knocking softly not wanting to wake the kids. He waited till she answered the door. "Hey I wasn't expecting you. Come in." Kim offered. "Yeah thanks. I finished up earlier than expected and was hoping for a sleep over?" Adam offered his best lopsided grin. "You're cute! Come on I was just about to head up." Kim locked up and they headed to her room. "Are we gonna talk about the grass stains on your shirt? Or how you are holding yourself differently?" Kim raised an eye brow reading him like an open book.
"Just a little accident at work. My shoulders hurts but I'm good. Just need you right now." Adam pulled her into his arms. "I'm glad you are here." Kim rubbed his back. "Can we go to bed? Please?" Adam begged. "Yeah of course." Kim lead him to the bed before helping him strip off his shirt knowing his shoulder was sore. They curled up together Kim resting her cast on his chest and her head on his good shoulder. "God thank you for this. This was exactly what I needed." Adam sighed closing his eyes taking in the moment. "Me too. I've missed this. Human contact at an intimate level. I didn't know how much I missed it till you. So just rest here in my arms and everything will be okay. We got this together." Kim kissed his chest as she felt his breathing even out. She was happy became here even if it was only to sleep.
She could tell what happen weighted heavy on his mind and his heart. She was concerned but accidents happen on the job. Injuries happen and this happened to be a bad week. They knew things would get better but they needed to work for it, together. Kim took all comfort his body gave her as she feel asleep. She hadn't realized just how lost she had been before meeting him. How untrue she was to herself. She felt something inside her coming alive again. And it was all thanks to him. Maybe opening up and being free wasn't as scary as she thought. Maybe she just needed to start listening to her heart instead of her head. It was a lot to figure out and think about. But she knew it was worth it, he was worth it. They could get there together, as a family.
