DEPARTMENT OF MYSTERIES, TIME CHAMBER; 18TH JUNE 1996

Hermione was running for her life, the Death Eaters were hot on her heels and for each spell she shot at them, two more were returned.

Oh God, oh God, oh God, we're all going to die, Hermione thought to herself as she barreled through another doorway.

Sand, so much sand, sat in the largest hourglass she'd ever seen. Time turners were everywhere, some spinning erratically, some moving so slowly it looked like they might be holding still. Various colors and shapes of the time pieces fill the room, extending so high that she couldn't see where they ended. It was a marvelous sight to behold, and normally Hermione would have appreciated it, but…

"Silencio!" She yelled; her wand pointed right at a Death Eater's chest. The spell, he'd shot in her direction, just missed her and caused sand to rain down over her.

Hermione whipped her wand at a second Death Eater who was charging towards her, sending him flying away backwards and crashing through the time sand, his screaming causing some to get into his mouth. Hermione watched in curious disgust as his head began to shrink, when suddenly Hermione was face to face with a man whose head was a baby while his body was still the size of a man.

Her distraction at the disturbing sight gave the first Death Eater an opening to cast a spell right at her chest; the pain was like nothing she'd ever felt began to eat at her organs as she flew backwards. Crashing through the giant hourglass, a vortex was opened, pulling all the sand in the time room into a black hole.

Hermione wasn't even aware of what was happening behind her as she laid on the ground, writhing in agony. The feeling of her body melting from the inside was all she knew, everything else fading away. Hermione didn't notice when she hit her head, knocking the little muggleborn witch unconscious. Not able to stop herself from being pulled in with the sand, Hermione's limp body crashed into more shelves and displays with such force bones were broken until she was sucked into the black hole.

And when she disappeared, history as she'd known it would never be the same.

DEPARTMENT OF MYSTERIES, CREATURES CHAMBER; 18TH MAY 1977

A small group of Unspeakables were gathered together discussing the possibilities and the logistics of creating their own chimera. A classic chimera with a lion head, goat body, with a dragon tail that had been captured in Greece and brought to London was caged behind them and sedated. Blood, hair, and scale samples had all been taken, and the Unspeakables were trying to break down what animals (magical or non-magical) they could combine to potentially weaponize the creature for the British Ministry.

"I believe a kappa and manticore combination–" one hooded Unspeakable said, his face obscured to keep his identity hidden.

"Are you mad?" A female interrupted him, "trying to combine them would be devastating! A manticore able to move and potentially live on both land and water? That sounds–"

"Exactly what the Ministry is asking for, if we can control it." Another man said, "we are the group that doesn't believe in the limitations of Magic do we not? I say a manticore already has similar characteristics to a chimera, we'll compare them and see–"

What they would see would have to wait, because at that moment the secure room they all stood in shook with such force, causing both men to be knocked to the ground while the woman fell into the table they'd been standing around. The lights overhead flickered and a blast of magical energy burst through the air before everything was still and a heavy silence hung in the air following the explosion.

"What the bloody hell was that!?" The first man, Augustus Rookwood, yelled. The magic that had hidden his identity now failed, making it so everyone could easily identify each other.

"I'm, I'm not entirely sure…is that a child?" The woman, now identified as Emmeline Vance, asked, rushing away from her peers to where a teenage girl laid in the middle of what looked like a blast sight. The girl appeared to be unconscious, though her body was convulsing. "Quickly, we need to get her medical attention," Emmeline yelled, looking up from the injured curly haired girl.

"Ah, right, and contact the DMLE, we'll have to report the breach. Can't imagine Crouch is going to be too happy when he hears about this…" the other man who'd been talking, Broderick Bode, was muttering to himself as he rushed from the room.

"Her vitals are crashing," Emmeline yelled over her shoulder as she ran diagnostics over the unknown girl. "Her insides, oh my stars, they appear to be melting…" Emmeline waved her wand, summoning her healer bag and began pouring what potions she hoped might help into the girl's mouth. "Blunt force trauma to the head…Rockwood, be helpful, yeah? I know it's a foreign concept to you–"

"Not all of us have gone through healer training, Vance," Rockwood snapped at the woman desperately working in front of him. "What would you like me to do? Put some dittany on the cut on her cheek?"

"Put her in stasis for Rowena's sake! Use your head, she's dying, you great worthless buffoon!" Emmeline yelled at the man, who finally moved forwards, casting the spell that had been requested. "Maybe that'll be our next chimera. You and one of those bloody apes, the two of you will have similar enough properties it'll be a breeze to combine you!"

"We need to move her, what you have in your first aid kit isn't going to save her. I've never heard of a spell that can cause this type of damage to the human body before, I wonder…" Rockwood said, stepping forwards while inspecting the critical diagnostic hanging over the girl.

"St. Mungo's you fool! Help me get her to the floo, we can discuss theories later!" Emmeline scooped the girl into her arms, and rushed towards her office where a private floo was located.

Rockwood stayed where he was, not following the two witches, honestly not caring either way if the girl survived or not. Crouching down, he ran his hand over the black scorch marks left behind where she'd appeared. Collecting some of the ash to analyze at a later time, he pocketed it just in time for a group of Aurors to burst into the room.

Alastor Moody, Rufus Scrimgeour, and Gawain Robards came walking through, their maroon Auror robes brushing the floor and the sound of their dragonhide boots clomping against the floor irritating Rockwood even more than just their mere presence was already. "Gentlemen," he greeted, not offering a hand or any other friendly gesture. "I'll leave the room to you," he said, flicking his wand, obscuring the rest of the chamber from their view.

"This is a crime scene, Rockwood," Moody growled as Augustus walked towards the door. "We need to be able to investigate, undo your spell. And you're going to have to give a statement as to what happened."

"Everything in here is classified above your pay grade I'm afraid. You'll have to take it up with the Minister," Augustus said, his hands clasped behind his back as he exited the chamber towards his own office. There was someone much more pressing for him to speak with than Mad-eye Moody at the moment.
