A few months later
a few months have passed and today is September 30th, almost close to October. In the abandoned shack that got remodeled, Amity, Gus, Willow, Hunter and Vee are hanging out inside the shack, trying to learn how to speak Spanish in a Duolingo-like app on a Tablet. Amity, Gus, Willow and Hunter however are having trouble with the letter R. Gus mumbles and asks himself "Am I doing this right?" Vee stands up and starts talking in Spanish. "Tres tristes Tigres comen tres platos de trigo." Said Vee. "Perfecto! You're our top student!" said the owl on the tablet and it shows Vee, a top student star. Amity looks at the tablet. "Hmm. I was the top student once." said Amity. Ghost, Clover and Emmiline are taking a nap together while Flapjack is pecking at the floor. Gus and Hunter are looking at Flapjack. "He's still doing that, huh?" asked Gus. "yeah. He won't tell me what he's looking for." said Hunter.
Camila appeared as she entered the shack "Hi." greeted Camila. She looked around the shack and she was amazed. "Ooh! I like what you've done with the place. No more exposed nails or possum nests. But this still confuses me." said Camila as she moves the door a bit wider and mentions a weird painting of Hooty on the door. "Yeah. he still confuses us too," said Willow. Gus waves at Camila. "Hola Camila. We're learning Spanish from this scary owl app." said Gus as he shows Camila the app on the tablet. "Hoot hoot! Practice every day, or I'll appear in your nightmares." said the owl on the tablet as its eyes glowed demonic red. "Oh, okay. Well, I'm going to pick Luz up from school later. Pop quiz. ¿Cómo se dice eso en español? Said Camila. Hunter raises his hand. "Oh, oh! Uhhh." exclaimed Hunter, he inhales and tries to say it in spanish but fails miserably. "Voy a recoger a Luz de la escuela después." said Vee in spanish. "Muy bueno! Keep it up. Ooh!" cheered Camila and left the shack. She sighed and talked to herself. "I never expected to be a mother of six." said Camila to herself. Camila walks away and Amity looks at her through the door, getting a bit worried.
Back in the shack, Hunter sits next to Gus as everyone resumes to learn Spanish from the tablet and Flapjack is still pecking on the floor. "Taxi." said the tablet. "Taxi!" answered Willow, Gus, Hunter and Vee in spanish. an orange leaf flies by in the shack and Amity stays silent for a bit. "El gato gordo," said the tablet. "¡El gato gordo!" answered Willow, Gus, Hunter and Vee in spanish. Amity sighs. "Maybe we should take a break." telling Amity. "A siesta," said Willow in spanish. "Siesta!" yelled Gus in spanish. Amity got up. "Guys, we've been here for months, and we've not made any progress on the portal door. We can't expect Camila to take care of us forever." said Amity.
Well, in the meantime, we could pull more weight around the kitchen. My mustard ravioli did bring tears to her eyes." said Hunter as he smiled. Vee looks at Hunter. "Those weren't the kind of tears you're thinking of," said Vee. Hunter pulled out a stitched shirt that he sewed. "I can help fix damaged clothes!" said Hunter. Willow holds a plant monster. "I can spruce up the garden!" said Willow. The plant monster growls at Vee and she backs away a little. Flapjack keeps pecking the floor.. "Maybe we need to look elsewhere. There's an entire human realm to search." said Amity. A camera flashed to Amity that made her flinch. Amity sees that Willow is the one who took a picture. "But Luz has school most of the week," said Willow. "So? Let's explore the town ourselves. After all, Luz went into The Boiling Isles on her own." said Amity. Gus started to think, assuming he put his finger on his chin. "If Eda came here before, maybe there were others. Maybe they left something behind that we can use." theorized Gus. the others agree. "Yes! That's the spirit! Together, there is no challenge that can hold us back." said Amity until she tripped on a hole that Flapjack is pecking and face-plants. "Ow." exclaimed Amity.
"It's a sign! We're doomed!" yelled Gus. Amity looks at Flapjack. "Come on Flapjack, this isn't funny anymore." said Amity. Flapjack chirps. Amity gets her foot free and she sees something inside the hole, she gasps. "Guys, there's something in here." said Amity. She holds up a hexagonal shaped box and Willow, Gus, Hunter, Vee and the palismen gathered around. Amity opens the box and takes out a scroll and unrolls it. They all gasp. "Hmm. looks like a map? Or a secret code?" said Gus. Flapjack flies to Hunter and gets on his shoulder. Hunter looks at Flapjack. "Flapjack, is this what you've been looking for?" asked Hunter. Flapjack chirps. "Well, what does it lead to?" asked Hunter. Amity sees a picture of an eye on the scroll. "That eye, it kinda looks like the old portal door," said Amity. Willow and Gus gasped and looked at each other. "The portal door!" yelled Willow and Gus. Willow and Gus hold their arms. "Portal door! Portal door! Portal door!" chanted Willow and Gus.
"Let's tell Luz," said Vee. "But what if it's just another dead end?" asked Amity as she looked at the scroll. "She already feels responsible for our other failed attempts," said Amity. Willow walked to Amity and placed her hand on her shoulder. "Then, let's not tell her until we can figure it out," said Willow. Amity looks at Willow and smiles. "By using our buff brains!" said Willow. "Buff brains!" yelled the Hexsquad with hope. Hunter laughs a little. "Yeah!" yelled Hunter. Then the scene fades to outside of the shack, with the wind howling in the air and five leaves with different colors flying by.
School day
Meanwhile, at the Gravesfield's local high school. Luz is attending English class. She looked at her palisman egg and holds it while her english teacher named Mr. Sandoval is describing a novel called "The Plight of the Mariner". "Foes vanquished, he trod the shores of his fatherland, family by his side, finally at peace". Said Mr. Sandoval, reading the novel. Then he talks to the class. " this epic ends with the homecoming of not just a man, but a hero." said Mr. Sandoval. Luz just lashed out the word "hero" when she knew what she had done. "Hero? Everywhere he went, people ended up suffering." said Luz with a little but yet depressed and full of guilt. "It does get bleak, but no one said his missing would be easy. And when you take into account the ripple effects of his actions-" as Mr. Sandoval continues describing the novel, Luz interrupts him. "Who cares about the ripple effects?" asked Luz as she hit her own desk with her fist, and it caught everyone's attention. "He was just a pawn in someone else's game. A-and he was smart enough to realize it." said Luz and got on top of her desk. "If his friends and family knew about his mission, they'd know that their lives would have never been in danger if it weren't for him. They should hate his guts, and it would be better if he literally never existed!"
Mr. Sandoval and the classroom looked at Luz in silence. Luz just cursed out her entire existence, she stopped talking and looked at the classroom. "Weirdo!" yelled one of the students. Then, the school bell rings. All the students walked out of their classrooms, Luz walked out and started walking down the school hallway, with her head looking down in gloom. She walks by her art class and looks inside. She sees a sign that reads "no taxidermy, no spiders, no snakes, no animal parts, no fireworks" which is clearly directed at her. Her art teacher sees her and gives Luz a dirty look while a sip of her coffee. Luz sighs and walks away. She opens her locker, which is full of art of Eda and King, especially a life size head sculpture of King's skull with a little crown on top. Luz sighs again, closes her locker and two new nerdy teenage studnets appear on her left. "Hey!" greeted the piercing student. Luz gets startled at first, then sees the two teenage nerds. "You're Luz, right?" he asked. "Uh…" exclaims Luz as she tries to answer. "Nice to meet ya. You were right in class. We read about too many crusty old dudes. Give me books about crusty old women!" said the piercing student. "I used to know one," said Luz, holding her right arm. "I've never seen you two around."
"We're new, but we've heard all about you." answered the piercing student. As Luz tries to speak, the nerdy teenager. "Are you gonna make another crazy costume for Halloween this year?" asked the nerdy teenager "Cause if you are, we're volunteering at the Haunted Hayride." said the piercing student. He pulls out a flier of the Haunted Hayride and gives it to Luz. Luz looks at the flier. "Old Gravesfield is the most haunted place in the state." said the nerdy student. "Yeah, you gotta come." said the piercing student and chuckled. Luz keeps looking at the flier of the Haunted Hayride with a gloomy face.
Meanwhile, at the school cafeteria. Luz is holding a tray of white rice, red beans and a cup of water. She started to find a table to sit but most of the students were taken. A jock named Josh and some three cheerleaders named Kelly, Charlie and Tammy are looking at Luz. "Hey Luz, where did you get that jacket? The dump?" teasing Kelly. Kelly, Charlie, Tammy and Josh start laughing at Luz. Luz looks at them and sighs. "Just ignore them, Luz. find a table and ignore them." said Luz to herself. Luz walks away and sits at an empty table. She starts eating her lunch and Josh, Kelly, Charlie and Tammy keep looking at her. Josh Turns to the three cheerleaders. "Hey, you wanna see something really funny?" asked Josh. Kelly, Charlie and Tammy sighed in love with Josh. "Totally." said Kelly, Charlie and Tammy. Josh pulls out something from a plastic bag and it's a big water balloon, field with trash and stinky water. The three cheerleaders gasp. "It's that trash balloon?" asked Kelly. "Yep." answered Josh. "Oh my god! You're bad!" said Cheerleader 1 with a smile. "She's gonna be so smelly!" said Cheerleader 2. "Do you think that's a bit too far?" asked Tammy. Kelly and Charlie looked at Tammy. Tammy turns her head, only to see Kelly and Charlie looking right at her. "I mean, that would be so funny. Totally." said Tammy and smiles nervously.
"I know it will. Watch me." said Josh as he got up and walked to Luz. Luz is still eating her lunch, trying to ignore those who pick on her. She looks down, looking pretty miserable but she doesn't realize that Josh is standing right behind her. "Hey Luz, look up." said Josh. "huh?" exclaimed Luz with confusion. She looked up, then Josh dropped the trash balloon, causing it to fall on her head. Luz screamed and she got messy from the trash balloon, and it caught everyone's attention. "Oops. my bad." said Josh, who was obviously joking. He started to laugh, then Kelly, Charlie and Tammy started laughing and now everyone in the cafeteria started laughing at Luz. They all pointed at Luz and kept laughing at her nonstop. She looked around, watching all the students laughing and pointing at her. She looked at herself, all covered in trash water and small pieces of rotten food and plastic. Luz started shedding tears at first, but what comes next is something that Luz hasn't felt before. She started breathing heavily, her eyebrows lowered down, her hands turned into fists and the pupils got smaller by the minute. As it turned out, Luz gets blinded by rage, tired from being picked one by the teens of Gravesfield. She gets up and grabs her tray. Josh laughed harder that he didn't realize that Luz is extremely pissed. She screams with pure rage and hits Josh in the head really hard with the tray. The jock tumbles to the floor and everyone gasps. Luz looks at Josh laying on the floor, breathing heavily.
One of the cheerleaders gasped. "Jock?" said Kelly. Josh didn't move an inch until his head started to bleed. Charlie noticed the blood and screamed from the top of her lungs. The other students started to panic. Luz realized what she just did and she gasped. Kelly runs to the Jock and gets on her knees and tries to wake him up. "Are you ok?! Say something?!" yelled Kelly. Luz sees a pinch of blood on the tip of the tray and drops it. She starts gasping and sees the other students backing away from her and some run away from the cafeteria. Charlie is crying and Tammy is calling the ambulance on her phone. Kelly looks at Luz with an angry face. "What have you done?!" yelled Kelly. Then it cuts to black.
Grave accident
Later, outside of the high school. An ambulance is in front of the school with all the students outside. Two guys are taking Josh on a stretcher to the ambulance and putting him inside. The students looked at Josh inside the ambulance. The two guys close the ambulance doors. Later, Luz is sitting on a chair, outside of Principal Hal's office. Luz stays silent and looks at her hands. She sighed. "Why am I like this?" Asked Luz to herself. Then, inside of Principal Hal's office, Camila and Principal Hal are having a conversation about Luz's behavior today. "Mrs. Noceda, your daughter's behavior was unacceptable." said Principal Hal with a disappointed expression on his face. "Look, I'm sorry about my daughter's behavior. But she's been through a lot lately, she doesn't concentrate well that-'' As Camila kept speaking, Principal Hal interrupted. "She wants to hurt one of her students?" asked Principal Hal. Camila looks at Principal Hal in silence. "Mrs. Noceda, what your daughter did back in the cafeteria is a serious injury! He almost died!" said Principal Hal. He pulled out a file and it's an X-ray of Josh's skull. He hands Camila the X-ray and she looks at it. Camila sees the big crack on Josh's skull. "You see this?" asked Principal Hal as he pointed at the crack on the X-ray. "This is the crack where Luz hit the student. It almost looks like it's about to open."
"She didn't mean to. Luz got so angry because the jock made a horrible prank towards her. I mean, with a trash balloon? That's just mean." said Camila. Principal Hal facepalmed. "Didn't you take her to the camp, Mrs. Noceda?" asked Principal Hal. "Well ... .I'' exclaimed Camila as she tried to speak but Principal Hal interrupted with a sigh. "You know what? Forget it. One more outburst, your daughter will be expelled from Gravesfield's high school. Do you understand, Mrs. Noceda?" said Principal Hal. Camila lowers her head and sighs. "Yes, Principal Hal. I understand." said Camila. Camila gets up and walks to the door. "I can't believe I let that damn try-hard into the school," said Principal Hal to himself. Camila heard what Principal Hal and she turned around. As she tries to speak up, Principal Hal looks at her. Camila sighs again, she opens the door and walks out of the office.
It cuts to Camila closing the office door. Luz looks at Camila. Camila turned her head to her left and looked at Luz. "Come on, Luz. Let's go home." said Camila. Luz gets up and she and Camila walk down the school hallway. Then it cuts outside of the school, the ambulance blares the siren and drives away, with the students looking at it driving away. Luz and Camila open the doors and walk out of the school. They walk to the car, Luz sees all the students looking at her and they're giving her a dirty look, like she's guilty for causing a brutal head damage to Josh, especially Kelly, Charlie and Tammy as they're giving a much dirtier look on her. Luz looks down and walks away with Camila. The same two teenagers from before appear. "You're still going to the Haunted Hayride, right?!" asked the piercing teenager. All the students looked at the teenage nerds and the teenage nerd 1 noticed them looking at him and the nerdy teenager. "What?" asked the piercing teenager. Camila opens the car door, and opens the right car door for Luz. They both get in the car. Luz closes the door, she sees her reflection in the car window, she just hates how she was and how she is now. Camila closes the door, starts the car and drives away.
It fades to Camila driving home while Luz is looking through the window. "Luz, what you just did wasn't very good. I am very disappointed." said Camila, feeling disappointed. Luz is staying silent, trying not to say a single word. Camila looks at Luz. "Mija, are you listening to me?" asked Camila. Luz sighs and she breaks her silence. "Yes, I'm listening." answered Luz. "Luz, that injury is really serious, it almost cracked the student's skull open. You shouldn't do that." said Camila. Luz gets a bit mad. "So you're defending him? Are you on his side?" asked Luz. "what? I'm just telling you that you shouldn't do such things like that towards people. I'm not on everyone's side." said Camila. Luz keeps looking through the window. "Yeah….sure." said Luz. Camila looks at Luz, getting worried and sighs. She kept driving, she drove past the statue of the Witterbane brothers.
Meanwhile at the Noceda residence, Amity, Willow, Gus, Hunter and Vee are in the living room, looking at the scroll. "I can't believe that we found the answer to our problems," said Amity. "Yeah, and it's a scroll," said Gus. "ok, all we know is that the eye on the scroll looks like the eye of the portal door, but what about the others?" asked Hunter. "Maybe we can ask the townspeople. Maybe they know." said Willow. Camila opens the door and she and Luz walk in. Amity and the others see Luz. "Luz!" yelled Amity with excitement and she ran out of the living room. "Hey batata, how was your day at-" as Amity tries to talk to Luz, Luz walks past her and walks upstairs. Amity looks at Luz. "school?" said Amity. The Hexsquad and Vee walk out of the living room and look at Luz. Willow looks at Camila. "What happened?" asked Willow to Camila. Camila sees Willow and sighs. "Luz hit one of her student's in the head with a tray and broke his skull," said Camila. Amity, The Hexsquad and Vee gasped. "What?!" yelled Amity with shock. "Why should we do that?" asked Gus. "she told me that one of her students just dropped a trash balloon and she got really mad and-" Camila stopped talking for a second and sighs. "I don't know what to do," said Camila. "That's not a thing that Luz would do," said Hunter. "I know. But I know that she didn't mean to." said Camila. Camila and the others look upstairs. Luz walked to her room and leaned on it with a pained expression on her face. Then she grabbed the doorknob and opened the door. Luz walks in her room and closes the door.
Tonight
Later that night, Gus, Hunter, Emmelline and Flapjack are in the basement. "Thanks for helping Gus." said Camila out of the basement. "Anytime. Good night!" said Gus. Camila closes the door. Gus lays on the couch. "Woo! I can tell that we got a big day ahead of us, so I'm gonna buenas this noche." said Gus. "mm-hmm!" nodded Hunter. Hunter is working on Camila's sewing machine with Flapjack on top of it, but then, he accidentally gets his finger caught in the machine. "Ow!" yelled Hunter in pain, then he started to whimper. Gus looks at Hunter. "You good? That sounded painful." asked Gus. Hunter scoffs. "Yeah right, I've been training in the Emperor's Coven for as long as I can remember. I think I can handle a little…"said Hunter, continuing working with the sewing machine then he accidentally cut his finger again. He winces. "pain…"
A few seconds later, Gus puts a bandage tape over Hunter's finger and he does it clean. "Oh. that went clean through." said Gus. "Camila taught me how to use this sewing contraption. Even Darius's stitches have never been this neat." said Hunter. Gus smiles. "That's cool." said Gus. "it is. Oh, and look at what I made!" said Hunter. He pulls out a shirt that he sewed with wolves on it and shows it to Gus. "These are mystical beasts called wolves, and I love them." said Hunter with shining eyes and smiles. "That looks great. You know, you've been smiling a lot more since we;ve been here." said Gus. Hunter rolls his eyes and sits on the couch. "It's not like I don't want to return! I just need a way to pass the time. That's all." said Hunter. Gus chuckles a little. "No. it's good to see you happy. One of us might as well be." said Gus. Flapjack flies to Hunter and gets on his left shoulder. Flapjack chirps. Hunter looks at Flapjack and pets him. "So, what was it like to be in the Emperor's Coven for so long?" asked Gus. Hunter looked at Gus and he answered the question. "I trained a lot. I studied a lot. I wasn't really allowed to be around the other scouts. But the weekends were nice. I have to leave the castle for missions." answered Gus.
"Do you miss it?" asked Gus. "Well, I miss knocking who I'm supposed to be." answered Hunter. Gus hugs his knees and gets a bit sad. "I miss my dad," said Gus. Hunter looks at Gus and places his hand on his shoulder. "We will find a way back. We have to." said Hunter. Gus looks at Hunter and gasps. "Oh my Titan. That's a line from this book I found." said Gus. he pulled out a book called "Cosmic Frontier" and showed it to Hunter. "Cosmic Frontier!" said Gus. Hunter gets confused, he doesn't know what Cosmic Frontier is. "Cosmic Frontier?" asked Hunter. "Yeah. it's a story that takes place in the stars." answered Gus. Hunter is still confused. "Why would anyone wanna go up there?" asked Hunter. "I don't know. Humans like spreading their junk everywhere. But it's a story about some people trying to get back home, like us." said Gus. "uh-huh." nodded Hunter. Gus shows Hunter the characters of Cosmic Frontier. "We got Captain Avery, Security Officer Quando, and a Chief Engineer O'Bailey who's hiding as a clone from the enemy planet." said Gus. Hunter gasps. "What, uh, happens to him?" asked Hunter. "I guess you'll have to find out," said Gus, as he gets off the couch and runs to the closet. He opened the closet, only to reveal some Cosmic Frontier costumes inside. Hunter's eyes started to shine by surprise. "Whoa." exclaimed Hunter.
Meanwhile in the girls' room, Luz is wide awake. She is looking at some glow in the dark stickers on the ceiling of the upper bunk bend and one star sticker that has a face is almost similar to The Collector. She raises her hand to the sticker, then makes it into a fist and holds it to her chest with a silent guilt. Luz gets out of bed and walks to the desk. She picked up her palisman egg and left the room, spilling some drawings on her desk. Amity heard the noise and woke up. She sees Luz leaving the room and gets worried. Meanwhile, Camila is in her bed, researching the Demon Realm. She looks at some papers and writes them down on a notepad. "They don't hate garlic like vampires, but they weren't entirely against eyeballs when we were watching that zombie movie," said Camila. "Gus said I could get some apple blood from the apple butcher, but…" she yawns. "...until I find one of those, I'll have to use food coloring." Camila falls asleep. Then she started to have some flashbacks in the form of a dream.
The dreams begin with a younger version of Luz, digging a hole beside a playground. She sees something and gasps. Three kids are playing together on the sandbox and Young Luz runs to them. "Look what i found!" said Young Luz. The three kids looked at Young Luz and she pulled out a snake's peeled skin and showed it to them. The three kids get disgusted by it. "Gross, don't touch that dead thing." said the little boy. "Ew! Gross!" yelled the little girl in disgust. Young Luz looks at the snake's peeled skin. "It's not dead. This is the skin of a garter snake. They shed their pajamas as they grow. It means there's a snake near us, and it just got a lot bigger!" said Young Luz. "Ewww!" yelled the three kids in disgust, they screamed and ran away. Camila is sitting on a bench in her younger state and she laughs at what Young Luz said. "She called them pajamas." said Camila. Then she hears two adults next to her, talking bad about Young Luz. "ugh. So unhygienic." said Adult 1. "That girl must have been raised by wolves," said Adult 2. Camila turns her head to them. "Hey! Wolves are actually great parents and-" as Camila is about to finish that sentence, the background flashes forward to a more recent time. She sees that she's in the school theater and sees Past Luz with the other students on stage."O happy dagger! Give me death!" yelled Past Luz in character. She stabs herself with a dagger and groans. "Huh?" exclaimed Camila. Past Luz opened up her costume and sausages came out as she groaned. The other students on stage screams and runs away. Camila started to laugh. "Her dad taught her that one," said Camila. Then she heard one of the adults behind her, retching. "Gross! Now everything smells like lunch meat." said Adult three. "Yeah, she is such a try-hard." said Adult four and they both laugh. Camila turned to them. "Oye! What did you just say?" yelled Camila. Her chair falls backwards, Camila screams and lands on a chair. She sees that she's now in Principal Hal's office and she's in her nurse uniform. She sees Principal Hal, sitting by his desk. "I said, grief can manifest in different ways. Like how Luz has been acting out for attention." said Principal Hal, then Camila started talking to him. "Losing Manny was difficult for both of us, but Luz has always done things differently." said Camila. "Didn't you say you were bullied in high school, Mrs. Noceda?" asked Principal Hal. "uh, yes, but-" said Camila, then the office starts to fill with water, as Principal Hal looks into Luz's file. "Luz hasn't made any friends, her grades are inconsistent, and I heard she brought a live snake to school?" said Principal Hal.
Camila gets worried while the office keeps filling up with water. Then, Principal Hal pulls out a ticket to Reality Check Camp. "take this. It could help her." said Principal Hal, as he gives Camila the ticket. Camila looks at the ticket. "Reality Check Camp?" asked Camila. The whole office gets fooled and Camila drowns to the bottom while sitting on the chair. "You don't want Luz to struggle like you did, right?" asked Principal Hal. When Camila tries to answer the question, she hears Luz's voice out of her dream. "Mom?" said Luz out of her dream.
It cuts back to Camila's bedroom, where she wakes up with a gasp and starts panting. She sees Luz, standing behind the door while holding her palisman egg. "Luz? What time is it?" asked Camila. Luz walks in the bedroom. "Mom, why aren't you mad at me?" asked Luz. Camila sighs. "Oh, baby. Come here." said Camila, as she gave Luz some space in bed. Luz walks to Camila and gets in her bed. "I've been terrified, sure. But believe it or not, I do understand what it's like to want to run away." said Camila. Luz hugs Camila. "I'm so sorry," said Luz. "but the point is, you came home. And everything is okay now." said Camila, Luz doesn't believe that everything is okay. "But it's not," said Luz. She puts her hands on head and starts shedding tears. "It's my fault everyone's trapped here. A-and I don't even know if Eda and King are okay. I wanted to meet them so bad. But I keep messing up." said Luz as she wiped her tears off her face. Camila pats Luz on her back. "Hey, everyone makes mistakes. But what matters is that you learn from them." said Camila. Luz looks at Camila and asks. "Can I sleep here tonight?" she asked. Camila smiles and wraps Luz with the blanket and gives her a goodnight kiss. Luz smiles a little and lays in bed. "Give the palisman a kiss too." said Luz. Camila gives Luz's palisman egg a goodnight kiss.
