"Fitz! Come on! Open the door!"
Sitting in the living room, Olivia was working on papers for Fitz who was out grocery shopping when someone started knocking very loudly on the door. Six in the evening on a Saturday, she wasn't too pleased to have someone there. And not recognizing the voice other than it was a woman. Realizing they weren't giving up, Liv ran to the door and opened it.
"Who the hell!... Abby?"
"Liv? What are you doing here?"
"I live here. What are you doing here? And with David?"
"Hello to you too, Olivia," David smiled at her, letting Abby do all the knocking. "I told her to call before she came knocking on a door. I would have answered it with a gun loaded but that's just me."
Debating on letting them in, Liv waited for some explanation as to why they were there. "Fitz isn't here. Everything okay at the office? No one's called me yet."
"Office is fine," Abby laughed. "Can we come in?"
Letting them into the kitchen, she offered them a water. "You didn't answer the question. What are you guys doing here?"
"Fitz told me about the Mellie situation, and I flew over. Figured it wouldn't hurt just to double check on him," David told her.
"And I came to kill Mellie," Abby informed her.
"Well, killing her isn't going to do anyone any good. Though it would make someone feel better for a little bit. But what are you doing here at my place?"
"I didn't know it was your apartment. Fitz told me this was his new address. He's living with you?"
"We're dating, didn't he tell you?"
"Nope, just that he wanted to date you."
"Liv, mind if I sleep on the couch for a bit? She wouldn't let me stop driving until we got here from the airport," David yawned.
Olivia nodded and let him go, leaving herself with Abby in the kitchen. "Fitz told you what Mellie wants in the divorce and instead of calling him or letting him work it out himself, you decide to fly out here with no notice. I can handle things for him. You didn't need to come out here, Abby."
"As his friend, I did. So how bad is the damage for him? Has he gone crazy yet?"
"He's not crazy. Fitz is understandably upset that she thinks she is entitled to everything but from what I know about the woman, that doesn't differ from any other day of the week. He should be back soon," Liv told her.
"Perfect! Then you have time to go change so we can go out. We'll go to dinner and then go to the club."
Shaking her head no, Olivia tried to convince her that the club was a bad idea. "There's a lot of work that I need to get done by Monday. I'm planning on a quiet night at home filled with work. Maybe Fitz will go though."
"Come on, don't make me take these two men alone!" Abby almost whined. "David doesn't dance. Fitz thinks he can dance and really, he can't. Plus, you need to get out of work mode for a while. Seems like that's all you ever do. Please? Come with?"
Before she could answer, they heard the front door open.
"I got you more of your wine and popcorn. It's still not a meal. So, I got real food too. Can you take a ten-minute break from all that work and… David?" Coming down the hallway he saw David laying asleep on the couch. "Oh no. If you're here that means… hello Abby." He said turning to the kitchen to see her with Olivia. "And what are you doing here?"
"Taking you and Olivia out to dinner and the club."
"DAVID!" Fitz yelled waking him up. "Why did you bring her here? I told you one thing about this divorce, and you show up with her here?"
"I didn't bring her; she bought another plane ticket for herself. I was coming alone," he sat up and stretched. "I suppose a club wouldn't kill us. We haven't been in a long time."
Taking the grocery bags from Fitz, Olivia started putting things away while the three of them talked in the living room.
"Why didn't you say that you were living with Olivia?" Abby asked him.
"Because it's none of your business. You don't need to know every little detail about my personal life," Fitz scolded her. "I'll talk to Liv about going out, but I already know what her answer is going to be." Leaving the two of them in the living room, he went to find Liv in their bedroom sitting on the floor with papers scattered around her. "What disaster have you got into now?"
"Just looking at some of your files. I think I may have found a couple things to help with Richards."
"I thought you were working on work. Why are you working on my divorce?"
"Because your divorce is part of my work. I need to talk to Jerry though. I found a trail through your joint account with her, and something isn't adding up right." Rubbing his head, he knelt down and picked up the papers around her. "What are you doing?"
"My divorce is my problem. I don't want you to worry about it and I don't want Jerry to be in any part of it."
"But Fitz…"
"No, Olivia! I have told you before that my father doesn't have anything to do with my marriage to Mellie. Now stop pushing the issue. Get dressed, we're going to dinner and the club."
Sitting with her back to the bed, she crossed her arms in nearly a pout. "You aren't listening again."
"Because there's no reason for you to go digging into bank records that aren't yours to begin with. I will handle the Mellie issue. Now get ready to go."
As much as she wanted to argue with him and tell him what she found, Liv decided to keep the argument for when there was no one else in the apartment. "I don't do the club scene. What if we just go to dinner and let them go to the club? Can we do that?"
Stepping out of the closet, Fitz buttoned his new shirt and kissed her. "I would normally say yes to that kind of a compromise, but I would like to go with you. We can dance or we can just sit and drink. Either way, I could use a live club tonight."
By ten, the club was already full of people and loud music playing. Actually, finding a booth to sit at, they had a great view of the dance floor. Several rounds of drinks came and went before Fitz pulled Liv to the dance floor. Making sure she stayed as close to him as she could, Fitz kept his hands on her waist blocking anyone else from even accidentally touching her.
"I can't dance," she laughed trying to step away from the dance floor after stepping on his foot a couple times.
"Oh no, no, no. You can dance with me," Fitz told her refusing to let her go. "It's almost over."
Abby kept an eye on Liv and Fitz as she danced with David a couple feet away. They looked so involved with each other. No one else existed but those two to them.
"You're staring at them again," David said in her ear so she could hear.
"Well look at them. They look like they love each other so much."
"Yeah, he does. I really think he does love her."
"Glad I'm not the only one who sees that."
Once the song was over, the four headed back to coat check to head out. Ready to head back to the hotel they said their goodnights and separated.
"See, it wasn't so bad, was it?" Fitz asked kissing the back of her hand as he drove them home.
"No, it wasn't bad. It's just not something I would do all the time," Liv told him resting her head back. "Could we go to bed when we get in?"
"Of course."
Olivia loved that whenever she asked him to come to bed with her, he didn't question it or make her feel bad about not being able to sleep alone. In a few days, he would be off for another seminar that she wasn't going to and would hopefully have Jerry or Huck with her for a couple of days.
Both getting some much needed, uninterrupted sleep, Olivia woke up before Fitz leaving him a note that she left to meet Jerry for ring shopping.
"Why are you sending money to Mellie?" Liv asked when she arrived at breakfast with Jerry.
"Good morning to you too. What are you talking about?"
"For over ten years you've been sending Mellie over a hundred thousand dollars a year. Why?"
"Livia, I have no idea what…"
"Don't lie to me. I know it was you sending the money to Fitz's old bank account. I followed the numbers and I know your bank account number. Jerry don't even try to deny it. You wouldn't have been sending it to Fitz, he would never accept it. Now I want the truth. Why are you giving her money?"
Wanting so badly to keep it from Fitz, and now Olivia, Jerry tried to keep his mouth closed. "It really isn't what you think it is."
"Please tell me you didn't have an affair with her."
"Oh good hell no. I wouldn't touch that woman with a ten-foot pole. It was an agreement we made after they got married. Mellie and I have a contract about their marriage."
"Does Fitz know about it?"
"I'm still breathing, aren't I? Fitz knows nothing about it. And I'm thinking that he still doesn't because you haven't told him, have you?"
"I wanted a full explanation from you before I said anything to him about it. So, start explaining."
"Mellie was being paid to be a political wife. Fitz needed a pretty wife by his side to become a senator, governor, then president. That was the plan for many years. Then he decided not to be any political figure. I told Mellie I was going to stop paying her because she was no longer needed."
"Then you stopped paying her last month?"
"Technically, yes, the payments were supposed to stop last month."
"Supposed to? You cannot give her another dime of your money. Do you know how bad this looks for Fitz and for this divorce?"
Dropping his fork loudly on the plate, Jerry was now irritated with her. "Do you honestly think that I don't know that? I know how bad this looks and I'm trying to fix it. But they are still married. And by the contract, she gets the money. The sooner this divorce is final the better for my account. How soon is that anyway?"
"Richards is making Fitz show him reason that she shouldn't get anything. It's going to take a bit longer. More than likely, the whole six months."
"Well that's just great. Richards is such an ass. If it were anyone else, he'd sign the divorce papers without problems." Paying the bill, he took Liv out to the jewelry store.
Browsing through the cases of rings at Tiffany's, Jerry found two he liked best for Verna before showing them to Liv.
"Which one do you think she'd like best?"
Looking at them, Liv preferred the more classic princess cut diamond to the heart shape he found. "This one, I'm sure she'd like this. Any idea on how you're going to propose?"
"Can't I just ask her? Hold out a ring, on one knee, the general idea? These big displays are getting overdone lately. All these flash dances and ballpark signs, what ever happened to private romance?"
"Are you still afraid she's going to say no?"
Jerry paid for the ring and walked out with her, putting it in his pocket. "I am a bit concerned she will say no. Or that she'll hesitate."
"She's got you watching wedding movies," Liv laughed. "I'm very sure she's going to say yes."
"From your mouth to God's ear. Please be right!"
While Liv was out, Fitz had time to rummage through the paperwork on her table. Finding the bank records with circles and scribble marks all over the pages, he tried to make sense of what he was looking at. Why are you looking at my bank account? You've never looked at it before. Have you? Waiting for several more hours before she came home, Fitz couldn't find any reason why this was so important to her.
"I brought dinner!" Liv yelled when she came in.
"Perfect. What's with my account statements on the table?"
