"Well, what brings you up here to me?"
"Cut the bullshit, James. We both know why I'm here."
Having closed the door, James took his seat and motioned for Liv to sit across the desk from him. Opposed to making it look like a friendly conversation, she stood behind the chair gripping the back of it tightly. The last place she wanted to be was in the same room as this man. But for Fitz, she'd do whatever needed to be done.
"Then this isn't a social call?" he smirked at her.
"I can guarantee there will never be a 'social' call when it comes to you and me. Why are you dragging me into Fitz's divorce? You know I have nothing to do with it."
"Ah, but the way Mr. Ballard says it, you do. Actually, you might be the whole reason Fitz initiated this divorce to begin with. Is he the reason you left me? I wasn't good enough, so you had to go work for him?"
Rolling her eyes, Liv laughed at him. "I left you? You're lucky I didn't turn you into the police or the judiciary committee and have your license revoked. You tried to rape me! You're lucky I didn't kill you that night."
James smiled, having a bright smirk on his face. "Damn, I do love when you get feisty." Seeing her grip the chair even tighter before he continued. "Did you actually break Ballard's wrist? That's some rage, Liv."
"All my rage is now aimed at you."
"Mhm, I guess so after you killed that Edison guy. I am surprised that the district attorney decided not to press charges against you. He could have had you charged with murder one. You shot him in the head. Temper, temper, Liv."
"Are you looking to end up like him?"
"Are you threatening a judge?"
"Merely asking a simple question. I see you haven't found a replacement for me in almost a year. Perhaps your conduct has been found out. The way you treat your aids. Sorry, your female aids."
"Nancy doesn't think I need someone else. She keeps a tight ship around here."
Folding her arms across herself, she stared him down still standing. "Why are you involving me in the divorce? You have both their stories and Jake's obscured version. What the hell do you want from me?"
"It was the only way to get you back in my sight; wanted to see how you are these days."
"I'm wonderful," Liv mocked him. "I'd ask how you are, but I don't give a damn. Now, let's get this charade over with. You will sign the divorce papers for him, and you will do it today. I am tired of him having to come back around to you for whatever bullshit you're asking for this time. It's been nine months! You would never have taken this long in any other proceeding. Why are you only punishing him? Because I work for him now? Because he's my boyfriend?"
James sat back in his chair and looked her over. "You're fucking him."
"I swear, James, you sign those papers right now, or the second I walk out of here, I'm going three floors down and reporting your ass."
"Oh, and what's the charge?"
"Attempted rape."
"You can't rape the willing."
"Willing?" Liv laughed at him. "No woman in their right mind would ever willingly fuck you. It would be a nightmare." Looking at him, she could tell she had hit a nerve, hopefully the right nerve. His fingers were clenched into fists so tight that his knuckles were white, the vein in his neck was ready to burst. Moving up to see his face, she noticed his jaw was clenched tight. "Please do it. Come on and hit me. Give me one wonderful reason to knock you on your ass right now."
Getting finished with his meeting, Fitz grabbed his briefcase and headed out, texting Henry to come around, Fitz met him at the front entrance and got in the backseat.
"Good evening, Mr. Grant. Headed home?"
"Actually, drop me off wherever you took Olivia, please."
"Sir?" Henry questioned him with a curious face.
"Did she tell you not to tell me where she was going?"
"Mr. Grant, I haven't seen Ms. Pope since I dropped the two of you off this morning."
Confused how Olivia could have gotten anywhere without Henry, Fitz laid his head back on the headrest looking at the ceiling of the car. You don't take cabs, or buses, or an Uber. Dad's in Seattle with Verna and Huck. How could you get anywhere else? Pulling up the app, Fitz tried to find her phone's location, but it was disabled. Of course, you turned it off. Very original, Liv.
"Doesn't Liv have another driver she uses?"
"Not one that works for the firm, sir. It's just me."
"Okay, just take me home please."
Throughout the drive, Fitz tried to call and text her, but received nothing in response.
"I have been dying for a reason to knock you out, James. Since that night that's all I can think of whenever your name is mentioned. I want Fitz's divorce finalized right now. Sign the papers and move on with your life," Liv shouted at him.
Hearing the loud voices from outside the office, Nancy listened closely for any kind of help needed sounds and closed her office door.
"Threatening a judge can get you minimum five years in prison, Olivia."
"That's not a threat, James, it's a promise. Take one swing at me and I'll be sure you end up on the ground. Now sign the damn papers."
"I'm actually enjoying this little game, Liv. Seeing you on edge, ready to pounce when you don't get your way. It's actually a sort of turn on."
"You are disgusting! How did you get this job? You're a damn pig for one. You use your authority to try to manipulate young women to get what you want. And when you don't you just force yourself on them. I'm sure I wasn't the first one you tried that on."
"You have no proof, Olivia."
"And you are not denying it, James." Going over to the filing cabinet in the office, she pulled out the folder for Fitz and opened it setting it in front of him on the desk. "Sign it. Now."
"It doesn't work like that, Liv. I sign this and what do I get in return? You're asking for a favor. Favors are two-way streets."
"I'm not doing you any favors; you are doing your job."
Getting up from his seat, James rounded the desk towards her in the blink of an eye. Grabbing her arm, he had her pressed against the desk bent over. "You don't threaten me." Holding her arms behind her back tightly in one hand, James covered her mouth with the other as he bent over her back. "Who the hell do you think you are coming into my office and making demands of me? You take my demands; you do not give them."
Trying to buck herself up away from him, James was too strong for her to move. Taking hold of her dress, he pulled it up over her waist and ran his hand over the covered skin of her ass. Olivia tried harder to get away from him; wiggling her way underneath him which only seemed to make him more turned on. Hoping that Nancy was still out there, she could feel his fingers moving between her thighs and bit his hand hard.
"You little bitch!"
Hearing his yell, Nancy threw the door open to his office just as he was about to smack Olivia. Surprised at the quick motion of the door, James flew off of her and to the couch. Seeing Olivia's skirt pushed up, Nancy was burning the angry look at James.
"Fix your dress, Olivia," Nancy told her but kept her eyes on James. Keeping Olivia in the corner of her eye, she went for the file on his desk and grabbed the pen before stepping over to him. "Sign the papers, your honor."
"Nancy, I can't just…"
"Sign them now, Judge Richards. While you still have the title." James could see the pure fire in her eyes when he looked up at Nancy. Dark and angry. Taking the file from her, James signed his name to one and tried to hand it back to her. "All of them," she warned. Flipping through the documents, James signed all he should have and handed it to her. Handing the file to Olivia, Nancy shook her head. "I let this go on far too long. You still have time, Liv. Go file those with the clerk."
Confused by what Nancy was talking about, Liv didn't question her for the moment and ran down the steps.
"How much do you know?"
"All of it."
Getting situated with the court clerk, Olivia went back up the stairs to Nancy's office. What did she mean she let it go on? Did Nancy know about his assaults? No. There's no way she would have known. She wouldn't let that happen. She's got to have been talking about Fitz's divorce. Or something else.
Walking into the office, Nancy sat at her desk with her paperwork surrounding her. "Did you get there in time?"
"Yes, I did. Here's the copies."
"Perfect, I'll get them sent out to the now ex Mrs. Grant. I'm sure you can take Mr. Grant his."
Sitting across from her, Liv tried to read her face. "Where is he?"
"Sitting in his office until I decide what to do. Or more, what you decide you want to do." Putting the copies in the envelope, Nancy turned and gave her attention to Olivia. "I've got to apologize, Liv. I should have been protecting you. All of you."
"I'm confused. Nancy, did you know?"
"I did. And I should have gone to the police when it happened the first time. You're not the first one James has done this to. You're the fifth. I thought if I stayed on, I could keep him away from the interns. If I was here all the time, I could protect each of you. But I see now, I shouldn't have tried to do that. I should have turned him into the police."
"How did you know about this? He's careful."
"He's careful when his messes are cleaned up. The night he… that you were…" Nancy wanted to be discreet but also knows she needed to say the words to make it real to what she was talking about. "The night he raped you, I was here. Well, I was here after it. I saw you get on the elevator; your shirt was undone. You clearly looked upset and had been crying. I came back into the office to get my phone. James took your thong and put it in his jacket pocket when I walked in. When I asked him what was going on, he only said you were having an emotional day. Then, when you quit the next day, I knew he had done it again. Liv, I thought you would go to the police and file charges, and I'd be right there with you, backing you up. But you didn't file them, so I let it go. I would not allow him to have another intern. I just told James that I was able to take care of everything myself."
Reaching over towards her, Liv squeezed Nancy's hand attempting to comfort her. "You don't need to protect him, Nancy. He made his decisions, and he needs to face the consequences. Does his wife know about them?"
"I'm sure she does. Liv, he's a horrible man, but he's an excellent judge."
"I know. But you cannot be his keeper for everything."
"Do you want to press charges against him? I can corroborate everything you tell them. I know what he has done to the other four and I am sure I can find them. This wouldn't be just on you."
Shaking her head no, Liv didn't want to. "If those girls haven't come forward by now, they've probably moved past it in their lives. It wouldn't be fair to bring up old wounds just because of one person. I'll get him to take an early retirement and get off the bench. He won't be able to use his judicial power to control anyone."
"I'll follow your lead. But Liv, I really am sorry I didn't protect you better."
I'm sure some of you are not going to like how I put that. And some of you are going to hate me for writing something so horrible. Let's keep the reviews to the story though. Thank you!
