"How did Stephen propose?"
Without thinking, Fitz asked the question to Beth. Out of the corner of his eye he noticed Liv taking a deep breath. On instinct, he reached out a hand to her but instantly brought it back, forgetting where he was a moment.
"Well, he had this banner made. Big white banner 'Be my wife?'; that's what he had painted on it. Stephen bribed the marching band and the cheerleaders from the football team to help him. All their friends helped carry the banner around the campus. They were lucky too, just after he found Olivia, it started to storm."
Mother nature telling me about a bad future. "He went through three of the buildings. He forgot which class I was supposed to be in on what days," Liv smiled and let Beth go on.
"The longest walk I've ever had to go on," Beth laughed. "But he did find the right building after he called your professor. Professor Grant was very helpful keeping you in one spot. Not too bad on the eyes either," fanning her face with a smirk. "Once we got there, Stephen got the band to start as soon as the doors were opened. Music so loud from the instruments playing some Marry Me song. This new music all of you listen to can make my ears burn. While the marching band stood on the first floor, I stayed on the landing between the second floor and the first. Stephen got the cheerleaders to go up the steps and spread out the banner in front of the classroom door Olivia was in. Then, Stephen waited on one knee for her to come out. It took several minutes, and he was getting impatient. I told them to play louder. One more verse of that song and then Olivia came bursting out of the classroom. You looked so angry and then you saw Stephen."
"I was trying to learn, and that music was horrible. I was going to start yelling at whoever was playing it."
"Stephen looked petrified that you might say no when you threw that door open. He told me he almost regretted proposing that way. But he was sure that you'd say yes. And when you did and he finally got up, all your friends started clapping and cheering. There wasn't anyone happier than he was that day. You make him very happy, Olivia. And when it's time for the wedding, you'll never be able to make him any happier."
Nodding her head, Liv picked at her fingers in her lap while trying to hide her face from both Beth and Fitz. There was no way she was going to let them see her cry even if she could cry at the moment.
"That sounds like a wonderful proposal," Fitz told her, enjoying the stories. "Pretty flashy with so many people around."
Looking all around the room, Beth turned her head to see Fitz. "What was flashy?" Taking a look at the window, she stood up and got her purse. "I should be getting home, it's getting late. Adam will be wondering where I am if I'm not there soon. He'll be ready for dinner before you know it. And to get the boys down for bed."
Liv whipped her head up to see Beth faster than she thought she could, her eyes going wide and looking at Fitz. "Beth, you can't leave."
"I must," Beth smiled patting her hand. "It was lovely to meet the two of you. Welcome to the neighborhood. You two will love it here. If there's anything you need, please let us know. We take care of each other in this town."
Not knowing what to do, Liv and Fitz stood up following after her. "Mrs. Finch, what if we invite the boys and Adam over here for dinner? It's already so late to cook. I'm sure I can fix us something to eat," Fitz offered as a last chance option.
"Are you sure? I would hate to impose on the two of you."
"Not at all, why don't you stay here with me and find something that the boys would like. Olivia can go get them and Adam to come over."
Nodding her agreement, Beth smiled, setting her purse down. "I'll find us something in the fridge. Rush over there please, Olivia, before the boys get too hungry and find the cake."
Going out to the hallway, Olivia closed the door behind her. "What's this? What happened? She was fine and there and then she wasn't."
Victoria stood outside the door to the suite for the afternoon. All through lunch and their walks, Victoria was only a few feet away from them. "She's sundowning. Her memory is going back to Alzheimer's stage."
"Then this isn't the paradox?"
"Maybe, maybe not. It's hard to tell. I've never been around anyone during a paradox."
"This could be her last day with us." Coming out of the suite, Fitz held her shoulders. "What's she doing?"
Fitz leaned down to kiss the top of her head and rub her arms. "You'll want to go in there and be with her. She's talking to Adam about going home."
"Adam is dead," Victoria reminded them.
"Which means that this is probably the paradox." Letting go of Fitz's hands on her, Liv went back into the suite and sat beside her. "Beth, would you like a tea? Anything to eat?"
Shaking her head, Beth stared off out of the window. "It's peaceful there. He's not in pain."
"Where?"
"With Adam. There's no pain. No sadness. No worries. I'm going to be with him. I'll be with my family again. I can dance with Adam. I can see my daughter. She's been waiting for a very long time to see me, you know? She's happy with her husband. They got to be together. I think I want to join them."
Liv took her hand and gave her fingers a squeeze, making Beth turn her head to look at her. "She has Stephen with her. Hope is with Adam and Stephen and George. I'm sure she's missed her mom. Are you sure you want to go?"
Fitz stood by the kitchen counter, preparing himself to go get Olivia and hold her tight or whatever she needed. Victoria excused herself from beside him to go get a couple of nursing assistants to be prepared. Seeing her ready to go to her next life, Victoria thought it would be time for her to let this be a family moment.
"I'm sure. I want to go. I want to be with my family again. I've missed them all so much." Reaching up, Beth put her hand on Liv's cheek. "It's okay to be sad that I'm not here. Just remember that I am so happy and surrounded by love. Don't cry, dear. Everything will be just fine. You're a wonderful girl. You'll be just fine."
Nodding her head, Liv took hold of her hand again. "You will too."
"It's time," Beth smiled at her. "It's time for me to go."
Before Olivia could say anything else, Beth's eyes closed, and her hand went limp in Olivia's. Checking her wrist, Liv couldn't find a pulse. Sitting beside her for a few more minutes, she carefully put her hand on lap and stood up when she heard others at the doorway. "Call the funeral home and let them know she's gone. The arrangements have already been made to take her home."
Victoria moved beside her and lightly touched her arm, moving away a few steps when Olivia flinched her arm away. "I can pack up her things this week if you'd like. We can have someone deliver them to you."
"No, they need to be shipped home. I'll take care of that if you can box them up."
"Of course, whatever you need, Liv."
Waiting in the kitchen, Fitz watched Olivia for any kind of emotion. Seeing her fling her arm away from Victoria, he knew any kind of physical contact would need to be initiated by her. He would follow her lead for the night and be there for her even more.
Taking her purse, Liv joined Fitz in the kitchen. "Will you call Lucas and have him come to the front?" she asked, handing him her phone. "I'll meet you downstairs."
Going to the lobby, she met Leslie at the front desk and took out her checkbook.
"Ms. Pope, that's more than the rest of this month and the next four months," Leslie gasped seeing the amount.
"Your team took fantastic care of her. That is their Christmas and annual bonus. Be sure they get that. The rest of the money you can put towards the facility. Hire more researchers or doctors. Just put it to good use."
"We will, I'll make sure of it. Thank you, you've always been so generous with the staff and patients here. Beth will be missed by so many of us. I'm sorry for…"
"Thank you. I'll get Victoria the necessary boxes and the address. Have a good night." Liv waited outside for Fitz and Lucas. Arms crossed against her chest holding for warmth on the cool night.
Walking out beside her, Fitz handed her back her phone. "I'm not going to ask if you're alright. I know the answer even if you told me that you are."
"Then why are you mentioning it?" she commented and heard her tone. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean that."
"I get it. Well, as much as I can. I'm sorry I can't take that pain away. What do you need?"
Without a moment of hesitation, Liv dropped her arms and took the spaced steps between them to him and wrapped her arms around him tightly. "Just this. Just you."
Lucas pulled up as Fitz hugged her back, lightly pressing his lips into her hair. "Let's get you home."
Giving him the destination, Fitz pulled her closer to him in the backseat. He gave her enough space to lean away if she wanted to and wouldn't take offense of it if she did. As much as he didn't want her to, Liv took out her phone and started to work. She just needs the distraction. Don't take that away from her.
"If nothing else, I am glad I did get to spend her last day with her," Liv told him while she read her emails. "I'm sorry for the way she acted towards you."
"Livie, if she acted like she liked me and knew you were engaged to Stephen, that would have been a more difficult situation. She's protective of you."
Liv turned her head to look up at him. "I feel bad that you came with me and had to endure stories of me and him together. I didn't know what I was walking into. If I had known she would be telling all those stories about him, I would have let you stay at the office."
Fitz was confused at the statements and moved for her to sit up. "Are you ashamed of me?"
"What? Of course not!"
"Are you ashamed of having a boyfriend after him?"
"No, Fitz, it's not like that. I just don't think it's fair for you to have to listen to stories of my past."
"I've told you before that if you ever wanted to talk about Stephen, I would be here to listen. I've wanted to get to know more about him for quite a while, but I didn't want to upset you. If anything isn't fair, it's the bull shit that you put up with about Mellie. Liv, if we were sitting here talking about an old ex-boyfriend of yours, we'd be having a very different discussion. But Stephen isn't an ex-boyfriend. You were engaged. You have a dress. He was taken from you. That's not something you just get over and move on from in a heartbeat. I'd never ask you to do that. I've already come to terms with the fact that he will always be part of you."
"But Fitz…"
"There's no 'but' Liv. Stephen is part of you. He is part of the reason you are who you are. I love you no matter what. Seeing you with his grandmother isn't going to change that. It wouldn't change that. You can't push me away because you think I'm going to be jealous of Stephen. I'm man enough to admit that I am jealous of Stephen. He got to know you before I did. He got to be with you for several years. Stephen had no strings attached when you were dating. But I'd never take that away from you. Your memories of him are yours. I just want you to be able to share them with me, when you're comfortable to do that."
Moving towards him again, Liv hugged him tight and kissed him. "At some point, I'll be able to share my own stories of him with you."
