"Jase and Trini said hi and that they'll bring Ollie up tomorrow morning," Tommy said as he walked into the living room, carrying one of her favorite blankets and a cup of hot chocolate. It might be May, but he was pulling out every comfort item that he knew she used. She stared ahead at the tv as he put the hot chocolate down next to her and then covered the two of them in the blanket. She seemed to slowly realize that he was next to her and leaned into him. Her silence was concerning, but he wasn't sure how to break her out of it.
"I don't know what to think right now. We have so much going on and…" Kim trailed off as she looked up at him and was only met with his loving concern. She had imagined a lot of ways that Tommy would look at her over the last few hours, but this wasn't it. "How are you not mad?"
"We both forgot to get a condom. I didn't pull out. I love you and having another child with you is something that I hoped would happen eventually. Take your pick. It's all part of it, but I'm not worried about me right now. What's going on?" Tommy asked as she snuggled further into the blankets and started tracing patterns across his t-shirt. He pulled her in closer to him and settled his chin on top of her head. Losing powers was always difficult, but this time was worse than others.
"I promised myself that if I ever had another child, I'd be ready. I would plan and actively try and now…" Kim trailed off looking up to see Tommy was still watching her, but also noticing his exhaustion for the first time. Below the surface, she knew that part of what was going on was losing her powers and not how she really felt about this baby.
"What do you want to do?" Tommy asked as Kim stared at him. Was he really open to other options than keeping the baby? "Look, I can't disagree with you and what you're feeling. I get it, well as much as I can get it, I get it. It's not just what I want though, Kim."
"I want this baby, but it's going to take me a bit to be excited about it. Can we…can we not tell anyone for a bit?" Kim asked and Tommy just nodded and the shock rippled through her again. Why was he being so agreeable? "Are you just agreeing with me to make me feel better?'
"No. I'm agreeing with you because this is important to you and it's noto me that we shout it from the rooftops that we're having a baby. Maybe at some point that will be important to me. But the most important thing to me right now- is keeping you and Ollie and our new baby safe and happy. Well as happy as I can. And a lot of things from the last few weeks are starting to make sense," Tommy muttered as Kim let out a laugh. There were many things over the last couple of months that now made complete sense to her as well. "Just…don't shut me out. I know that some things are going to be difficult for both of us, but I can't help if I don't know. We both need rest after today- why don't I find us a movie and we can sleep through it?"
"That sounds amazing."
Two Months Later
Move in day. They had been delayed, rescheduled, and were finally moving in with a bit of work still being done on the second floor. The moving truck sat, completely loaded, in the gravel driveway- waiting for helping hands to unload it. There were boxes all over the house from the last few days as they brought over smaller items, but today was the day that they got to actually start making this house their home.
"Hey Ollie! We've got something for you!" Tommy called across the back deck as Ollie had sprinted out to play in the treehouse as soon as he got up that morning. He hadn't felt that it was a good idea to keep him cooped up this morning and had just let him go. Tommy had been going back and forth between getting breakfast ready, checking on Ollie, and trying to help Kim regulate her morning sickness. Of all the days for it to strike hard, this had been the one that they had hoped it wouldn't.
"Coming!" Ollie yelled as he scrambled down from the treehouse and sprinted back over to Tommy. "What is it?"
"Go wash up. It's on the kitchen table with breakfast," Tommy said as Ollie sprinted in ahead of him and he followed behind him. He headed straight for the box on the table, but Kim steered him to the sink instead. He could see how pale she looked, but she had sworn to him that it was starting to lift and that she would be able to help with stuff today. He wished that she would rest if that was what she needed.
"Fine. Can I open it now?" Ollie sassed as Tommy shook his head as he caught the glare coming from Kim and he put an arm around her. She sank into his side and he smiled as he realized what she was doing. He was already enjoying how much more she let him do for them since they'd realized she was pregnant. It was hard for him to watch as things were slowly taken away or pushed to the side until after the baby was born, but she was taking it well. They both just wanted a healthy baby and that meant not pushing herself. "Big Brother. Brother- Noun. A male sibling, protector and defender, partner in crime, best friend for life. I…I'm going to…you're…"
"Yeah, we're going to have a baby," Kim said as Ollie threw his arms around the both of them and she smiled down at him. They had been pretty sure that he would be excited about it, but they knew there was always a chance he'd be upset at having a sibling.
"When?" Ollie asked as he pulled off his t-shirt and pulled on the new one. He wanted everyone to know that he was going to be a big brother.
"Early December, late November," Tommy supplied as Ollie turned around to show them the shirt and they both smiled. They knew it was going to be hard for Ollie to go from an only child to an older brother, but they hoped because he was older that it would be a little bit easier. "Everyone is finding out today. Well…at least if the t-shirt stays on."
"This is the best day ever!" Ollie declared as he grabbed a few pancakes and walked into what was going to be the living room and plopped down on the makeshift picnic area they'd set up last night.
"I think he's right," Kim whispered as she stood on her tiptoes and pulled Tommy down for a kiss. Tommy's hand found its way to the bump that had appeared a couple of weeks back and he was so glad that she had abandoned trying to hide it. It had been driving him crazy that every time he touched her stomach that she smoothly moved his hand away. She didn't want anyone to guess it before they were ready to tell it and he just wanted to hold her tight and keep her safe. The doorbell rang and Tommy pulled away as he glanced at the clock and let out a sigh. "Probably your parents."
"I got it!" Ollie yelled as he jumped up and ran for the door. Tommy grabbed himself a plate and then passed Kim one as well. She grimaced as she looked at the food and felt her stomach bubble up with what was in front of her. She had told Tommy that this sounded good and now her stomach was betraying her.
"Oh my god!" Trini screamed as she shoved a few bags of groceries on the kitchen island and then gave Kim a bear hug. "I didn't know you were trying."
"We weren't," Kim muttered with a smile as Trini studied her a bit more. She had told Trini about how she wanted to have children years ago and knew Trini would catch how much of a surprise and adjustment this had been. "But SOMEONE has pointed out enough over the last few weeks that he's not going anywhere and well...I think it's going to be really good for our family."
"Is that why it took longer?" Trini asked as Kim shrugged. It was certainly part of it as Tommy had insisted that they go ahead and design and fit a nursery, which she had to admit she loved. She loved everything about this house though, the built-in cabinetry, the exposed white oak beams, the sage accents that played well with all of the bright whites and obsidian details. When Tommy had suggested a craftsman house, she had pushed against it at first, but then Jack had shown her potential plans and she had fallen in love with all of it. "And also why you've backed out on girl's night for the last three weeks. That's a dead giveaway."
"Yeah…" Kim said with a smile as she smoothed her shirt down and she heard another shriek go up as she looked over to see Janice Oliver giving Tommy a hug and then glancing around for her. This had definitely been the best way to tell everyone, even if the next few hours were going to be lots of hugs, exclamations, and celebrations instead of the unpacking they so desperately needed to do.
"What are you working on?" Kim asked as she walked into the nursery and saw Tommy surrounded by various pieces of something. The last of their friends had just left and they had managed to basically put the whole house together today. They truly had some of the best friends in the world. "Handsome?"
"I wanted to surprise you with getting the crib put together today, but this is more complicated than I can handle right now," Tommy said as he brushed his hands off before pushing himself to stand. "I'll get it done while Ollie is at summer camp for the next month. How you feeling?"
"Like I can finally eat today," Kim muttered as she took another bite of the cold pizza from earlier that day. "I never went through morning sickness with Ollie. The most that happened was avoiding chicken like the plague."
"But pizza is fine?" Tommy asked and she nodded as he slipped his arm around her and they both headed down the hall towards their bedroom. Ollie had put himself to bed several hours ago, so it was only the two of them still up. "You sure you're going to be up for the drive in the morning?"
"No, but I want to see him off to camp. I'll just suck on the ginger candies Aisha gave me and drink sprite if that is what it takes," Kim said as Tommy closed the door behind them and started stripping her out of her clothes. "I really need a shower."
"Then go shower. I'll get everything put up and be back up before you're done," Tommy said as Kim gave him a look and his mouth dropped open. "Say less."
"I didn't say anything," Kim muttered as he walked into the bathroom and turned on the shower and he heard the content sigh come from her. When he looked over his shoulder she had secured the door and had finished stripping. "Love you."
"Love you too."
