It had only been twenty-four hours. Twenty-four hours ago, Tommy Oliver had been the green ranger. But, that part of his life came to an end thanks to Rita Repulsa's green candle. It had burnt down and taken the powers of the green ranger with it. The only way to stop the evil witch from using the powers for evil once again was to give The Dragon Power Coin to a ranger who had a stable connection to The Morphing Grid. He had chosen his best friend, Jason Scott, the red ranger.
"Well, at least I still have taking Kim to the dance to look forward to," Tommy thought to himself as he walked through Angel Grove Park. He knew his five closest friends would be headed to Earnie's after school like always. They had invited him, powers or no powers, they considered him one of them, but, he wasn't ready to hang out with them yet. He held nothing against them, they had tried to save his powers. Rita had made Jason choose between getting the candle, and saving Tommy's life. The blame was hers.
He came to his favorite place in the park, an area along the shore of Angel Grove Lake with several large, smooth, and mostly flat rocks making up the shoreline. He set his bag down, stepped on the largest of the smooth rocks, and began to stretch. His thoughts drifted to his friends. He could picture them now. Zach Taylor, the black ranger was most likely showing off a new dance step trying to impress Angela. Kimberly Hart, the pink ranger would probably be on The Youth Center's balance beam by now, moving across it with confidence and grace. Billy Cranston, the blue ranger would undoubtingly be working on some new invention of his. Trini Kwan, the yellow ranger would be doing any one of three things; watching Kimberly, her best friend on the balance beam. Practicing a Kunfu Kata with the same confidence and grace her best friend showed on the balance beam. If she wasn't doing either of those things, she would be at Billy's side, assisting him with whatever gizmo the group's "Main Brain" as Zack often called him was working on. Then there was Jason who would be teaching his Karate class.
Meanwhile, at his Comand Center, Zordon of Eltar, an interdimensional being that Rita had trapped in a timewarp ten thousand years ago worked with his robotic assistant Alpha 5. "Alpha, are the scan results on Tommy complete yet?" Zordon asked from the energy tube his head appeared in. The tube was the only means the wise sage had of communicating with the world outside of the timewarp.
"Almost Zordon," Alpha replied as he entered commands into The Command Center's large computer bank. "Aye aye aye aye. Zordon, I hope you're right about Tommy." the robot added in a nervous-sounding tone.
"As do I Alpha. Tommy is an honorable young man and a courageous warrior. The rangers still have The Dragon Shield, and Dragonzord to aid them, but, a sixth ranger to aid in our fight would be invaluable."
A series of beeps from the computer caught Alpha's attention, and he turned his attention from Zordon back to the Computer. "Zordon, the results are in!" Alpha said excitedly as he rocked from foot to foot and waves his hands above his wide saucer-shaped head. "You were right Zordon, the amount of those midi-chlorians in Tommy's blood is much higher than in the other rangers!"
"Alpha, that is Tommy's midi-chlorian count?"
"The computer estimates twenty-thousand Zordon. But, I'm still not sure what that means. What are midi-chlorians anyway? And, how are they going to help Tommy?"
"Midi-Chorians are a microscopic life form that lives in the cells of all living things. I first learned of them years ago during a period of deep meditation that allowed me to make contact with another dimension. Since then, I have kept an eye on this dimension and sadly it is in need of help that right now we are unable to provide. However, there is one there that may be able to help us, if he is willing."
"Who Zordon, and why wouldn't he be willing to help us?"
"He is the being I contacted in my meditations. His name is Yoda, and before the fall of what was called The Galactic Republic, he served as The Grandmaster of The Jedi Order. An order devoted to guarding the peace in The Republic. However, thanks to a plot by a Sith Lord, Sheev Palpatine, going by his moniker Darth Sidious, the republic fell and the Jedi were wrongfully named as traitors, and only a few remain."
"But I still don't understand how that helps us Zordon."
"The Jedi and their enemies The Sith have elevated midi-chlorian levels, allowing them to tap into an energy field they call 'The Force.' It is my hope that Master Yoda can be convinced to teach Tommy the Jedi ways. Although I fear he may refuse."
"Aye aye aye aye aye! But why would he refuse?"
"Because Alpha, Jedi were traditionally trained from childhood. Part of that training was to let go of all emotions especially emotions like anger, and any attachments beyond that to The Force itself. They went against that tradition with a young boy named Anakin Skywalker, due in part to his attachment to his secret wife Pad'me Amadala a senator from the planet of Naboo, and the machinations of Sidious, Skywalker fell to The Darkside of The Force, and became Darth Vader."
"Oh, I see, since Tommy was not raised by the order and since Tommy would be attached to the other rangers," Alpha said in understanding leaving the unsaid portion of his thoughts hanging.
"That is my fear Alpha, but we must try. I have already contacted Yoda, and he has at least agreed to meet Tommy. Teleport him here at once."
"Right away Zordon."
Tommy finished practicing a kata by standing at attention and bowing. He then went to his bag, pulled out a gym towel, and wiped the sweat from his forehead. It was then that familiar energy surrounded the young man like a warm blanket. Seconds later, Tommy stood on the central platform in The Command Center with a bewildered look on his face.
"Alpha," he said looking at his robotic friend, "Zordon, what's going on?" he asked turning his attention to the projected image of the wise old sage.
"Tommy, while the green ranger powers have been diminished by the green candle, there may yet be a way for you to help in the ranger's fight against evil. However, I must warn you that the journey will be long, and potentially dangerous."
"Zordon, I'm willing to help however I can, but, you said it yourself. My powers are gone."
"Not your power Tommy, the green ranger's," Alpha said correcting him.
"Should you choose to take the chance, my hope is, you will discover your own power," Zordon added.
"Okay, but, what journey? What chance?"
"I wish to send you to the planet Dagobah, a remote world in a galaxy in another dimension. There you must seek out Yoda, a Jedi Master, and convince him to teach you the ways of The Jedi Order."
"When do I leave?"
"Now," Zordon answered. "I will cover the earth in an energy field that will wipe the memory of all who know you except for the rangers. That way no one can question where you have gone."
Tommy sighed and looked at the floor. He stepped forward and looked back at Zordon. "I'll do it," he said with a confident nod
"Very well then. Farewell Tommy," Zordon said before Tommy teleported away.
"What are you up to Zordon?" Rita asked aloud as she watched a green light streek past the moon and speed up until it broke the dimensional barrier.
"It doesn't matter Empress. Without powers the green weakling is no threat to you," Goldar answered in his rough gravelly voice.
"Yeahthat's right! You stole his powers!" Squatt said excitedly.
"Yes, Finster! Finster is that new monster ready?!" she asked as she strode into her monster maker's workshop.
"It will be by this time tomorrow my queen," the old white alien said not looking away from the clay statue he was skillfully sculpting.
"It better be good Finster," Rita said walking out of the room.
"Great class Jase," Zack said offering up a high five, "The kid's sure are learning fast," he added with a laugh as Jason slapped his hand.
"Thanks, Zack, but, uh I think you missed one of those chips Angela dumped on your head," Jason laughed back as he pulled a ching of potato chip out of Zack's hair.
"Ah, that girl can play hard to get with the best of them, but never fear, The Zack-Man, will land her sooner or later," Zack said full of confidence and making the rest of the group laugh.
The sound of their communicators going off instantly stopped the teen's lighthearted mood. They began glancing for a secluded area.
"Guys," Kim said nodding toward the locker room hallway. The group made their way to the hallway. They ducked around the corner and Jason glanced around.
"Billy, Trini, we clear?" he asked.
"Yeah," Trini said looking down towards the locker rooms.
"Affirmative, Jason," Billy said as he glanced around the corner back into the juice bar's main area.
"We read you Zordon," Jason said quietly into the wrist-mounted device.
"Rangers teleport to The Command Center immediately."
"We're on our way," Jason said before closing the channel. They all glanced around and nodded in agreement that they would be unseen. Each of the rangers pressed a button on their communicators and were instantly wrapped in an energy field of their respective colors streaking through the air to The Command Center.
"Zordon, what's going on?" Kim asked when they all appeared in The Command Center.
"Rangers, momentarily, Alpha and I will cover the earth in an energy field that will wipe the existence of Tommy Oliver, and the green ranger from anyone's memory on earth that does not process a power coin," Zordon said drawing looks of confusion from the power team.
"Remove Tommy from people's memories?" Trini asked.
"Why Zordon?" Jason asked.
"Tommy has left this dimension in hopes of finding a Jedi Master by the name of Yoda."
"Yoda, Jedi Master?" Billy asked.
"Let me explain rangers," Zordon answered as he began explaining the quest Tommy had gone on.
Meanwhile, in an alternate dimension in a far-distant galaxy, Tommy landed on the humid swamp world of Dagoba."Whoa!" he said as he looked around the strange planet. It was foggy, damp, muddy, and unbelievably humid. "This place is strange but," Tommy began stopping in mid-sentence.
"'But?' But what?" a strange-sounding voice said from behind him. Tommy spun and slipped into a fighting stance. "AAHH! I mean you no harm." Tommy looked in confusion at the tiny, old-looking green alien that stood on the rock that was now in front of him.
"Sorry, you snuck up on me," Tommy said as moved back into a normal stance. Something, although he couldn't say just what, told him to trust the strange alien. "I'm Tommy, by the way," he said as he slowly held his hand out to the little alien. The alien looked curiously at his hand before extending his own tiny hand and placing it in Tommy's.
"Jar Jar," Yoda said using the name of an old friend to conceal his own identity. "You come here, why have?"
"Huh," Tommy asked in a confused tone at the little creature's speech pattern. "Oh! Uh, well, I came here looking for someone."
"Looking? Found someone you have," Yoda said with a cackle that made Tommy laugh in return.
"I guess I have," Tommy agreed. "The person I'm looking for is, some kind of teacher I guess."
Yoda gasped, as a look of realization washed over his wrinkled face. "Yoda! You seek Yoda!"
"Do you know where he is? Can you take me to him?"
"Yes, yes, now shelter we must take. Coming a storm is. Once it passes, take you to Yoda I will."
"Really? Thank you. Is there shelter nearby?"
"My home, not far it is for one with such long legs."
"Alright," Tommy said as he knelt down near the rock with his back to the tiny green alien. "Climb on, or do you need help?" His question was met with another small cackle from the old alien.
"Old I may be," Yoda said as he grabbed Tommy's shoulders and pulled himself onto his back. "But helpless I am not."
"Alright Jar Jar, which way?" Tommy asked as he stood.
"That way we must go," Yoda said pointing straight ahead.
"Alright, hang on and let me know if you need a break or anything," Tommy said as he began to quickly walk in the direction the small alien had indicated.
"Zordon, my old friend, right you are. Powerful this one will be," Yoda thought to himself as he gently probed Tommy's mind. He carried guilt with him, guilt the wise Jedi Master knew his prospective padawan would have to face. He could also sense a strong attachment to his friends. Zordon had described them to him when they had communicated not long ago. He had described them as a group of exceptional young people, that care deeply for their world and seek to defend it and its people from evil. "Turn left you must. In the next clearing, my home is," Yoda instructed.
"Alright, we'll be there in no time."
"Failed I did because let the Jedi grow I did not. This time, different the order will be. See now I do that Jedi must feel emotion, but not lose themselves to them. Attachments we must have. Honor our friends here and long gone we must. The beginning of a new era for the Jedi, this Tommy Oliver is." Yoda thought to himself as his hut came into view. "There, my home is," Yoda said pointing at the small hut on the far side of the clearing.
"Oh man, I hope I fit," Tommy said with a slight laugh.
