A Potter and A Dementor

Chapter 2

Also Known As "The Quest of England"

Percy Jackson was jogging down to supper when he saw Grover running as fast as he could. He stopped to meet his friend who was calling his name.

"Percy, Percy," he yelled only to trip on his fake foot that came off when he was running and bleat as he caught himself before face planting into the ground.

"Hi, Grover," Percy called, "What's got you in such a big hurry?"

"I was walking down the to the lake, and you know I love to talk to the nymphs, but then she came! It is such an honor, as she is an earth goddess you know, even though that is not exactly what she is known for, though she is one of the older ones, and she decided to stop here in her travels, but Percy!"

"What?"

"I need you to come with me. She said to get the one who I saw jogging up the hill, and you are the only one in this direction. She wants to talk to you!"

"All right. Should I get someone else?"

"No, just you for now. Now come on!"

"Okay, I'm coming."

Grover pulled off his fake feet as he was getting impatient with the way they weren't sticking on right with his fidgeting and making him lose his balance more. Once he was standing with his natural feet on the ground, he very quickly regained his balance and started pulling Percy in the direction of the lake. He stopped once they were in front of the woman.

She stood tall, dressed very conservatively compared to Aphrodite, and dressed as someone who worked in an office all day. Despite that, her clothes rippled with the colouring of her surroundings. Her long dark hair was partially tied back in a bun, and curly like Percy's own hair curled. However, what about her appearance stood out was that she was blindfolded, had a full military sword belted at her side, and had a set of scales hanging from the bracelet on her wrist for all the world as an over-sized charm.

"Hello, Ma'am," started Percy, "I am Percy Jackson, the one that you told my satyr friend Grover to get."

"Greetings, young demigod," stated the woman, "I am Themis, goddess of justice. Walk with me round the lake, for I have tidings to tell thee of."

"Yes, Ma'am," said Percy, who for some reason could not get the desire to call her anything else but that out of his head. She had an aura of weightiness and age that also seemed like it judged you constantly when you were within the area she was in. Of all the goddesses that he had met, Themis was the first one that actually felt godly on first impression.

"There is a community in England that has shut me out," she started, "that has continuously shut me out, though a few try to serve me. It is mainly the young ones that have not become jaded or given up on changing things for the better that has an interest in truly seeing me back. They are children and legacies of Hecate mainly, for they have come under persecution from the regular mortals and have made for themselves a hidden country. It looks right, but only superficially. However, it really isn't, despite the beliefs of the masses and the labour of the few. Three factions have become militant, their government being one of them. The only good that has come of this is that my children are being fed."

"I do not ask you to form a revolution. It has been started twice, and both are half wrong. I do not ask you to judge their government, for I will send one of mine with you with that task. They will come before the sun sets. I ask that you, young demi-god, go to Great Britain with the correct number and make them aware of us immortals once again. How you do it is up to you, but this is no easy task, for there has already been a prophecy spoken to stop the one who has gone and flooded the plains of Hades. You are to aid the Boy-Who-Lived, and you will know what that means when you get there."

She paused.

Percy asked in the quiet, "May I ask about what your children are?"

"Yes," she answered, "As I am blind to your face but see your soul, so too do they. As I judge souls, they bring them to me. As weighty as my aura, as cold and fearsome as the aura of Thanatos, so are they. As Thanatos can form in the realm of the living, so are they. They are as semi-solid wraiths, and as wraiths do not feed on food as you do, they feed on happiness and the light of souls as they eat them. Once eaten, the souls appear before me as I guide the judges of the dead at the gates of the underworld. You cannot kill them, though many have tried. None but demigods, gods, and other monsters see them. The British call them dementors.

"In matter of fact, while you are in the Isles, you will notice that there are monsters that are also the children of Hecate. You are not to kill them, for they have formed a way of controlling themselves, and so will not hunt you for the most part. Those that attack, you may kill."

Percy paused, "I am honoured you give me this quest, Ma'am, but... normally I need to be sent with a prophecy. I will try with the monsters, but it's become a habit to attack first."

"You will try. They are not rabid savages to be hunted anymore."

She paused and looked straight at him, which was really disconcerting with the blindfold.

"Perseus Jackson, send an offering, not in blood, in my name, and I will be able to help. I can arrange for you to be picked up by my sister, who can be persuaded as well."

"Thank you, Ma'am."

"Go, tell Chiron, and he will counsel all that will be going."

"Yes, Ma'am," Percy nodded, and scurried up to the farm house.

"Chiron! Chiron!"

Grover's voice rose as he got closer to the dining area.

Chiron looked up from where he sat at the front table for the camp directors and guests as Grover ran into the dining area and ran up to him, holding his fake feet over his shoulder.

"Young satyr, what is going on?"

"Chiron! She was here at the lake."

"Who?"

"Themis, the goddess of justice."

Dionysus grunted from where he sat with one hand on his cup, "I am sure you and the rest of the nature spirits were luxuriating in the presence of another minor earth deity."

Grover looked apologetic, "Sorry, sir, having you here is great, but having two of you here is awesome. I didn't mean to minimize what you do here, sir, but she was here too, and she's normally not here and she's even more connected to nature."

"Yes, yes, I get that is a high, now shoo."

Grover sighed and went over to the Athena cabin's table. He slouched onto the bench near Annabeth.

Annabeth looked over from where she had just summoned her meal, getting up to give her offering.

"Hey, Grover. What's up?"

"Percy is talking with Themis, if you are wondering. He's by the lake."

"Okay."

Grover noticed that she hadn't registered yet what he had said. Wait, he thought, here it comes in three, two, one...

Annabeth froze, "Seaweed Brain is talking to an older goddess and you didn't tell Chiron?"

"Dionysus sent me away once he heard she was here. Anyway, I might have been rambling a bit."

"Wait here?"

"Sure."

Within a few minutes, Annabeth was back in her spot.

"So..."

"I was hanging out at the lake with the nymphs, and then she came, and then we were hanging out with her too. Then we saw and heard someone running nearby, and it was Percy. She sent me to get him to her, so I decided to come and tell you."

Annabeth shook her head. "You know, at one point I thought it was pretty neat that I had gone on a quest since they seemed so rare. Only really great heroes had gone on them, you know. Nowadays, I wonder if I will get a year off. It's been disaster and heart ache year after year. I thought that that was over with Chronos defeated and Luke..."

"Maybe, there will be. Maybe this will be the last one before you can retire or something."

"I hope so. Even though it's so rare in our tales... I'm still working on remodeling Olympus."

"How far have you gotten?" asked a new voice to conversation.

"I am on the second building. I've got the gardens and terrace views to deal with after that. Thankfully, I can use the same basic structure design, and the details are where the differences will be. Even still, I have to make it so that each temple or garden or pond is unique and celebrating what each god and goddess is about and making it so that no one is offended at what I design for them. I've been busy doing this all in my free time."

Annabeth looked up.

"Percy! Why are you over here? You're supposed to be at the Poseidon table..."

"I know, but I wanted to talk to you before I talked to the head table."

"So... Themis?"

"We will be taking more than the usual three, because we're to help bridge two revolutions who are fighting and also half wrong with what is going on. We are going to be meeting with another representative of her. There is a prophecy under way over there already in Great Britain, and we're to help. Umm, there's a warning she wanted to pass on..."

At the two confirming nods, he continued. "I know we have hardly run across this here, but the demi-gods are either full demi-gods or their children, with a few of Demeter as well. She calls it a hidden country of the children of Hecate."

"Seaweed brain, what's upsetting you so much?"

"Right, well," he glanced at the others, "the children of Hecate over in Great Britain have found a way for the monsters to not thirst after them or govern them. As such, we are not to hunt them."

"What?" Annabeth's gasp attracted her half sibling sitting beside her.

"What's up?"

"A hidden community where the children of Hecate have found a way for monsters to not hunt them and live among them..."

"Is that possible?"

"It would be interesting if we could team up with the Hecate cabin and see what we could do..."

"I don't believe it. Our scent is too strong."

"It doesn't matter. Themis says it exists. As the goddess of justice, I would believe her."

"Maybe there's one or more here, and we haven't seen it? Maybe that's where Medea got her other maids? Kidnapping from these other communities, or maybe even saying it is like an apprenticeship?" wondered Annabeth.

"Maybe."

"I wonder if they got out safe."

"There's a chance." thought Percy, "I mean, the boat we took may have been the quickest I could get to, but that isn't to say that it was the only transport on the island. I mean, if there were flying carpets or something like that..."

"Flying carpets?"

"Yeah, isn't that what Alladin flies on in the movie?" questioned her half sibling.

"I guess. Witches are also known to fly brooms..." Annabeth gasped, "Seaweed Brain, there are some here, because otherwise how do we know that witches fly brooms?"

"And with how often the gods used to not claim their children, maybe they went by their magic..."

"And so they don't know how they have it, but they know they have magic and how to use it."

"And it's even in typical Halloween decorations."

"Hide in plain sight, and nobody would ever know unless they wanted you to."

"With the mist hiding what they do, how could we tell?"

"Unless they could also erase memories?"

"That would mean that they could have a pretty good arsenal."

"Of course, as they are using magic, how much of it could we use?"

"Not much."

"It would be cool to work alongside someone like that though."

"Should we go bug the Hecate cabin?"

"I mean, since Seaweed Brain and I are going to be in a Hecate heavy zone, we should probably talk so that we would know what we could be working with and against."

"It would be interesting if the communities of Hecate's children could work alongside other demigods and if we could expand the communities to cover all demigods."

"A place to live without being hunted on a regular basis, most likely because the wards keep the nastiest out all the time..."

"The younger children could actually learn stuff in a safer environment, and the adults would be fighting because we could live on average to be adults."

"Demi-gods would not be so rare."

"Training camp for heroes would probably have to be summer camp for young adults maybe, because if the gods can't see them, then there is a reason that they haven't been sent on our quests."

"That would work."

"Some could stay behind and look after the kids our age, unless we had to fight, in which case we would be fighting with adults on our side too."

"I mean, did you come across Seaweed brain's mom and step dad last night during the Battle of Olympus? Wasn't that awesome?"

"The way his mom was fighting and guiding his step dad at the same time? Yeah."

"I wish my parents could do that."

The older girl shook her head, "Just thinking about getting older and having kids, being there for my kids would be awesome."

"I want that too."

The two girls sighed.

"Someplace where we could live without being being afraid..."

"Yeah, that would be nice."

"Maybe I could go this time?"

"I don't know."

Grover and Percy had watched Annabeth and her normally quiet half sibling bounce ideas back and forth off each other like a birdie in badminton.

"Think they've got an idea that would be worth thinking about?"

Percy reached over and brushed some strands of hair behind Annabeth's cheek.

"Maybe we will be able to settle in Great Britain's hidden community of the children of Hecate or a similar community. I'd like that."

"If we get it straightened out."

"There is that. Apparently, it's almost there, though."

Half an hour later, the alarm blared at the camp entrance. The group that had been about to head to the camp fire headed to the gate way instead.

As they headed there, they found the air almost became wintry, and all of them started noticing that they were dreading meeting whatever was out there.

They got to the gate within a good time, still. There they found a familiar figure and something that could only be described as a monster, and it wasn't looking at them.

"Nico!"

"I need to bring Hank across the wards."

"Hank? Nico, what are you doing?" asked Annabeth.

"Oh, I forgot," stated Percy when he got near the front of the crowd.

Annabeth looked at her boyfriend, along with everyone withing hearing range, causing muttering.

"Percy, you are the reason a monster is coming to the camp?"

"You forgot that thing?"

"I thought a Cyclops was a one time thing, but apparently not."

"You're not joining the monster's side, are you?"

Percy shook his head, "We cannot kill it. It is one of the children of Themis and Thanatos, so it is immortal. Themis sent it for my quest, along with Nico, I guess."

Nico stepped forward. "One of the three Kindly Ones was sent too, but she knew that she would not be allowed within the camp. Actually, none of these two would be allowed in the camp, so I'll stay out here."

Percy looked at Nico in his leather jacket, and the frost on the grass. "Yeah, you're better dressed for it than me. Do you want a fire? We were about to do camp fire."

"Sure, the aura doesn't bother me like it does you, but I would definitely like to warm up."

("Who is that?"

"Nico, son of Hades."

"I guess he doesn't mind the monsters that much."

"Well, I think it's just certain types. I mean, Percy Jackson can tame Cyclops and hellhounds.")

Nico grabbed one of the sticks off the ground near by and held it out to Chiron, who held the torch. Chiron lit it.

Chiron looked sadly at Percy, "Well, Perseus, I believe after I light the camp fire, we need to talk in the Big House."

"Three of dark, and three of land,

Three will go already planned.

Heirs of magic hide away;

Where, the gods cannot say.

Three of death, and three of fear,

Three that are already near.

Child of wisdom leads the way,

Finds a mother's place to stay.

Three of light, and three of stealth,

Three that will inherit wealth.

Hidden ones in light of day

Takes away a person's say.

Three of fire and three of fate,

Three sides will always be the state

Of the hidden Sceptered Isle.

Go, and this way none shall file."
