Today, our heroes are on their way to Mikan Island where Ash will challenge one of the Gym Leaders of the Orange Crew. On their way there, two new friends are joining them on their adventure—Tracey and the baby Lapras.
The waves were good today.
Ash and the gang left the Pokemon Center, along with the baby Lapras to head to their destination—Mikan Island. What took the others by surprise was the fact that Lapras allowed Ash and a few to ride on her back.
But the only ones that would even fit were Ash, Misty, and Tracey. Seeing this dilemma, Ash decides to switch two of his pokemon out in exchange for Blastoise, who was big enough to allow Ritchie, Molly, and Tomo to ride on him. His second choice was to call out his Gyarados for Serena, who was naturally scared of the pokemon at first, but seeing how sweet and kind the water type was erased that fear.
With the arrangements all set and clear, they headed off to Mikan Island. The ride was nice and peaceful, and the waves were calm and soothing, adding to the peace and quiet which was gratefully appreciated.
Tracey was conversing with both Misty and Ash. The boy was intrigued by the stories they were telling him about their Kanto journey.
"Wow, you guys saw a giant Bulbusaur?!" Tracey exclaimed in awe.
"Yep, and it wasn't alone. There were other Bulbasaur's gathered around it, along with Ash's." Misty tells him.
"That's amazing! I only wish I had been there to witness it myself." Tracey sounded a little down that he wasn't actually there, but was still a little excited.
Ritchie smiled, "Keep hanging around Ash and you'll see tons of other awesome things." He teased.
Tracey whipped his head towards him so fast it's amazing he didn't snap his neck, "You really think so?!"
"Uh…" Ritchie didn't know what else to say.
Ash rolled his eyes, "Don't tell him that, Ritchie." Honestly, he's making it seem like he attracts pokemon much—which is not true!
"Well, it does seem like pokémon are naturally drawn to you." Misty decided to add her own two cents to the conversation. Thinking about it now, it did seem like some of the pokemon they've encountered would seek Ash out on their own.
"Even you, Misty?" Ash groaned.
Serena giggled, "I don't really see it as a bad thing, Ash," she rubbed the top of Gyarados's head, "And if they're as sweet as Gyarados then I wouldn't mind seeing more of them." Gyarados purred at the affection.
"I'm curious to hear more about your adventures." Tracey said wanting to know what other exciting things they saw on their journey.
"We'll be happy to tell you, Tracey." Ash said.
But first things first.
They need to make a stop at the pokemon center first, then go and see what the gym is all about.
Mikan Island—Pokémon Center
First thing they did was head to the Pokemon Center first. Ash insisted on it because he wanted to make sure Lapras was okay. Thankfully the Nurse Joy here already heard about what happened from the other Nurse Joy and didn't ask any questions.
Ash went over by the phones and contacted Professor Oak to let him know they made it to Mikan Island. Professor Oak was telling him that everything back home was going well, and that his mother came to the lab to check up on him.
He told him other things as well.
"I see, so Officer Jenny interviewed everyone in town." Ash sounded detached and uninterested, but curious to know what Officer Jenny asked them.
["Indeed she did. And let me tell you, my boy, she was not happy with their answers."]
"I bet." He muttered.
["She asked them if they really didn't know where Gary was, and of course they said, "no." But what really made her upset was when they tried to offer their condolences to you, Ritchie, Green, and Yellow for everything you went through growing up."]
At this, Ash narrowed his eyes.
Offer their condolences? They have some nerve!
["Then saying that set Officer Jenny off very badly as she tore into them. She stated that if they truly wanted to offer their sympathies, then they should have actually helped all of you and believed your words."]
Ash blinked, oh wow. Officer Jenny had gotten upset for their sake alone, that was truly kind of her. He should send her some of his mother's snacks as thanks.
"Thanks for letting me know, but to be perfectly honest with you Professor, I don't really care." Ash confessed.
Professor Oak gives him a sad smile.
["I understand. Then I won't bother you with it anymore."]
"Thank you." Ash said, gratefully.
"Hey, Ash?" Tracey came up from behind, getting the others' attention, "Misty wants to know if—" His eyes drag over to the screen and he halts whatever he was going to say, "P—Professor Oak?!"
'I'm surprised he didn't choke on his own spit.' Ash thinks, "Tracey, why don't you talk to Professor Oak for a bit." He suggests.
Tracey looked like an excited child, and Ash took that as his cue to leave and let the two talk about whatever they wanted.
Misty saw him coming over, "Where's Tracey?" She questioned.
"Talking to Professor Oak." He answered.
"Oh…" Misty said.
Well at least he got to talk to the Professor like he wanted.
Serena had a question to ask Ash, "Are you nervous about challenging one of the Orange Crew, Ash?"
He thought about it, "Actually, I'm more curious than nervous. It'll be different from the standard gym battles I'm used to back in Kanto. So it should be interesting."
Ritchie was excited, "I can't wait to see what sort of challenge it'll be."
"Don't worry, we'll find out very soon." Ash said.
And they will.
After leaving the Pokemon Center, the gang were then on their way to the Mikan Gym. There was a dirt path before them so they decided to follow it.
"Hey, I think that's it!" Tomo pointed.
Right before their eyes was the Mikan Gym. The outside of the gym has a curved roof, and it might have one on the inside, too.
"Let's go see what the gym leader is like." Ash suggests as he walks ahead of them, but stops when he spots something on the ground, "Is that…a coconut?"
Pikachu looked ready to go over and pick it up, but Ash stopped him, "This has "trap" written all over it." Constantly spotting pitfall traps from Team Rocket made him a trap spotting expert.
Molly narrowed her eyes before deciding to try out a little trick of her's. Looking up, she spotted a bucket of water that was placed up on a tree branch.
Deciding to be devious, she decided to make the bucket fall down on the prankster's head.
So she did.
"Gyaaa!"
Ash blinked, "Gyaaa?" Was someone bidding behind the tree over there?
"You guys heard that, right? That was a person we just heard." Ritchie asked just to be sure.
"No, we all definitely heard it." Misty said.
"It sounded like a child's voice." Tracey commented.
Seren looked over by the tree, "I think someone might be hiding over there."
"Fenne (I do smell a human)." Fennekin supported her claim.
They were both correct as a boy with short, spiky black hair, wearing a yellow shirt and dark green shorts came out from his hiding spot. The boy was drenched from head to toe and did not look happy.
"Hey, what's the big idea?!" He yelled.
Molly puffed her cheeks out at him, "Serves you right for trying to prank my big brother!"
"Ursa (That's right)!" Teddiursa said.
Ash raised a brow, "Trying to prank me with something like this, not his first time doing this." He deduced.
"I'm guessing the same thing." Misty agreed with him.
"Why would you set up such a prank in the first place?" Tracey questioned.
Smirking, the boy answered, "Simple, because it's to show just how stupid trainers are in challenging my sister."
Misty frowned at his answer, "That's not very nice. You shouldn't pull such a mean prank."
"She's right, you could end up hurting someone." Serena added.
"Pika pikachu (This kid reminds me of someone)." Pikachu was trying to figure out who though.
"Pikachu pi (I wonder who)." Sparky said.
The boy didn't seem bothered by their words, "Only an elite trainer can beat the rest of the Orange Crew. Novice trainers have no business in trying."
Ritchie was getting annoyed by the kids' attitude, "He's really starting to remind me of Gary." Just saying his name again still made him feel so much rage.
Ash was still feeling a ton of negative emotions for Gary, but decided it wasn't worth the anger right now.
"Not to interrupt your arrogant thinking about trainers and all, but would you happen to know where the gym leader is?" Ash asked.
'He called him arrogant.' Misty and Ritchie thought.
"You're looking at him." The boy stated, smirking.
Tracey gave the boy a look of disbelief, "The gym leader is you?"
"That's right." The boy said, confidently.
Ash was the one to call him out, "That's a lie."
"Huh?" The boy said.
"I don't know if this is another one off your pranks or not, but the fact of the matter is—you are not the gym leader." Ash elaborates.
"You are absolutely right."
A new person entered the scene. It was a petite young woman with light brown hair, tied into three pigtails—sporting a black undershirt, a long red skirt, and shoes.
"S-Sis…!" Said the now worried boy.
"Sis?!" Misty and Ritchie said.
The woman narrowed her eyes at her brother before addressing them, "I'm sorry about my brother, Senta. He's normally not this cocky."
"It's okay, no harm done." Ash assured her.
She smiled, "Nice to meet you, my name's Cissy." Cissy introduced herself to the gang.
"Hi, I'm Misty."
"Ritchie."
"Nice to meet you, I'm Serena."
"Oh, my name is Tracey."
"I'm Molly! And this is my best friend Teddiursa!"
"Ursa (Hi)!" Teddiursa said.
"Tomo."
"And I'm Ash Ketchum, this little guy on my shoulder is Pikachu." Ash introduced himself last.
Cissy's eyes widened slightly, "Ash Ketchum? As in the very same trainer that won the Indigo League?"
Senta's eyes also widened, "What?! This guy won the Indigo League?!" He couldn't believe Ash had won something so important to Kanto as the Indigo League.
Ash rubbed the back of his head, feeling a little uncomfortable, "It isn't something I like to brag about, but yes that is me."
"Wow, first time I've got a champion challenging me," Cissy smiled, "You are here to challenge me, right?"
"That's the plan." Ash said.
"Then let's go inside and I'll explain what we'll be doing." Cissy insisted.
Ritchie was confused, "Wait, so you guys aren't going to be battling?"
"No, the Orange Islands gym battles are different from Kanto's." Cissy explained as they all walked inside the building. Senta proceeded to press a button on his remote, making a line of cans appear, and making the battlefield become an aquatic pool.
"Come out, Seadra!" Cissy calls out her Seadra for this gym battle.
"Seadra (I'm here)!" Seadra said.
Serena was amazed by Seadra, "Oh, wow. Her Seadra looks amazing." She takes out her Pokédex and scans it.
[Seadra, the Dragon Pokémon. It is known for its horrible disposition, but possesses both strength and speed.]
"Seadra sounds like a very tough pokemon." Serena comments, feeling a little worried for Ash.
"Don't worry, Ash will be fine." Ritchie promised.
She decided to take his words to heart and believe in Ash.
Cissy then begins to explain what they will be doing, "The first challenge will be a Water Gun match-up. This is where a Pokémon's accuracy will be tested by shooting down as many cans as possible."
Ash smiled, "Just like target practice," taking out a pokeball he calls out his water pokemon, "Blastoise, I choose you!"
Blastoise comes out, smirking and ready for battle, "Blastoise (Let's do this)!"
"Blastoise already looks ready to get started." Serena observed.
"I'm curious to see how this'll play out." Tracey had his sketch pad out and was ready to start drawing.
Senta gave the signal and both Pokémon began shooting at the displayed cans. Cissy's Seadra was indeed a fast shooter—Blastoise was better!
During their training on the island before the Indigo League, Ash decided to have some of his Pokémon practice their accuracy skills. Some long range attacks like water gun and flamethrower were part of the training regimen.
The ones he focused on most were his Water and Fire types, as they have some moves that could use some good sharpshooting practice.
When his Wartortle evolved into Blastoise, his accuracy power went up, which was to be expected. Ash decided to focus both on Blastoise speed and power, which helped his Pokémon's accuracy a lot more than he was expecting. Blastoise's water gun was much more powerful back when it was Squirtle, and that's why he wanted to work on it some more.
So that not only will it be more powerful, but fast, too.
And the results paid off.
As the last of the cans fell, Senta called it, "Winner, Blastoise!" He announced.
"That was amazing!" Serena was impressed by how fast Blastoise's water gun was compared to Seadra.
Seadra turned away in disgust at losing to Blastoise. Cissy didn't mind the loss and smiled as she was impressed by the speed and accuracy.
"That was impressive," She said, "Let's head outside, there's another challenge we're going to do."
Who's That Pokemon?
It's…Primeape!
"Primeape!"
She takes them back outside, and for this challenge it was going to be a Wave Ride. The aim this time was to swim out to a flagged buoyant return to the beach first.
"I see, it sounds simple enough." Ash said.
Cissy throws a pokeball, "Blastoise, let's ride!" She calls out her Blastoise for this one.
Ash was thinking about sending out his Gyarados, but decided to change his mind, "Lapras, I choose you!" Out came the baby Lapras, who looked excited.
Tracey thought it was strange, "Why would he send out Lapras instead of Blastoise or Gyarados?"
"I know why," Tomo knew Ash had a reason for sending out Lapras and decided to voice his opinion, "It's because he wants Lapras to be a little more open with the world."
"Oh, so that's why." Serena was starting to understand what Ash was trying to do.
"Lapras only trusts Ash and no other humans and might try to withdraw from the world around it, but if Ash brings out Lapras more often then it'll open up more." Tracey said.
"It makes sense." Misty said.
Senta gave the signal for them to start. Both gym leader and challenger had to ride on their pokemon for this one. They were both neck in neck in this one just like with the sharp shooting challenge. Even so, Cissy's Blastoise was no pushover, but Ash wasn't about to give up just yet, either.
Unexpectedly however, a tidal wave suddenly appeared behind them. As luck would also have it, Lapras chose that moment to reveal the young one knows Ice Beam, which it used to freeze some of it. Having a good idea, Ash knew what to do.
"Lapras, use Ice Beam to make an ice-track!"
This proved to be a good move on his part as Lapras was much faster on ice than water as thanks to this, they were able to win the race.
Senta called it, "Winner, Lapras!" He announced, shocked that his sister actually lost.
Cissy was even more impressed, "That really was something else, Ash. I can see how you won the Indigo League." She complimented.
"Thanks." Ash said.
Cissy gives him something, "Here you are, the Coral-Eye badge." The badge was pink and is shaped like a tellins shell with a small gemstone on it.
Ash took it and smiled, "I think challenging really will be a good experience for me."
"Pikachu (I think so, too)." Pikachu agreed.
Having gotten his very first badge, Ash anticipates what other challenges are ahead of him. Stay tuned as the journey continues.
