Chapter 33: Swapped Perspective
Once Dash Baxter finally worked off his fool's gold debt, he quit one of the two jobs he had so he could focus on his college education. Choosing to quit the most demeaning job, he left the shoe store and kept his Nasty Burger one. During one of his breaks, he was approached by his friend Dale. "I don't understand you, Dash." Dale commented. "Back in High School you always accepted your life would go downhill afterwards. Why do you bother with college then? Do you expect a community college to help you get a better job?"
"I just hope college lasts long enough for me to have saved enough money to live on my own, Dale." Dash told his friend. "My parents said that, once my college days are over, I'll no longer live with them."
"I get it, Dash." Dale understood his friend. "Life's so unfair."
"Tell me about it." Paulina said, entering the conversation. "I still can't believe my university of choice thought my cheerleading wasn't good enough for them. They allowed Star, for Pete's sake."
"She had better grades, Paulina." Dale explained. "I still can't believe Kwan's got a football scholarship and Dash and I didn't."
"He did a better job cleaning up his act after Danny Fenton's fame as Phantom and as a Princess' boyfriend made the authorities pay attention at Casper High." Paulina reminded them.
"So, Paulina, how about a date at the park tomorrow?" Dash suggested.
"Earn a diploma and get a better job and we'll talk about it, Dash." Paulina replied.
Irving Burns then approached the three former A-Listers. "Sir, this area is for employees only." He told Dale and then approached Dash and Paulina. "Your breaks end in 2 minutes."
"Yes, Sir." Dash and Paulina replied.
"Goodbye, friends." Dale said and left.
"I might hate this job but at least I'm no longer selling women's shoes with him." Dash commented.
"Shut up and let's get back to work, Dash." Paulina replied.
"Oh, them again." Dash moaned as he saw Danny and Natasha and feared his former victim would intentionally make his work even harder.
"Dash, Paulina, Danny Fenton has just ordered three hamburgers and two milkshakes." Valerie said as she approached her former A-List friends.
"On it, boss." Dash said.
"What kind of Princess eats hamburgers instead of salads or some other non-fattening food?" Paulina asked.
"None of our business, Paulina." Valerie answered.
Trying to stay professional, Dash filled two milkshake cups and picked up three burgers to deliver to Danny and Natasha. "Your order, Sir." Dash said. To his surprise, even if he stayed professional enough to stay quiet about it, Natasha ate two of the burgers.
"I bet they only come here to humiliate us." Paulina commented once Dash returned to behind the counter.
"It's better than when Mr. Lancer brought some students here to use us as an example of what they'll become if we don't study." Dash replied. I knew my life would go downhill after High School but does he need to come here for that?"
"Tell me about it." Irving Burns agreed. "It's already bad enough when he has me going to Casper High to use me."
"If I may ask, why do you even agree to go there?" Dash asked. "Even I don't miss my glory days like that."
"Lancer tips me for every time I do it." Irving explained.
"Makes sense." Paulina his last shift ended, Dash went back home. "Welcome home, son." Dash's Mom said. "How was your day?"
"The usual, Mom." Dash neutrally answered.
"Good." She commented. "Would you like dinner now?"
"Yeah." Dash answered. "Thanks, Mom."
