Everyone knows. Everyone knows that Sides and Established people require different medication. Everyone is taught it, it's common knowledge - common sense! Why would you give an Anxiety Side medicine that targets Anxiety directly? Medication meant for Illness traits is diluted for their protection. Everyone knows that!
Logic tried to not look at Janus. Looking at him only made his frustration grow. He should have known this. Everyone knows this!
Roman carried Virgil upstairs, even though Virgil mumbled that he could walk fine. They gathered in his room as Roman laid Virge down on his bed. Virgil groaned and closed his eyes. Patton fussed with the blankets, pulling them up to Virgil's chin.
"This is perfect timing." Logic sighed. "I have finally projects I need to start."
"Is that all you can think about?" Patton whipped around, anger sharpening his words.
"Well someone has to!" Logic nearly growled. "I'm trying to make sure we have a good future-"
Patton snapped, "Can you focus on the present for one fucking second?!"
Logic's surprise was nothing compared to Patton's. He slapped his hand over his own mouth and stared at Logic with wide eyes.
"I am thinking about the present." Logic said slowly. "And presently, I cannot give my attention to my school work. If my grades slip, there goes our largest form of income."
Patton rolled his eyes and dropped his hand. "Whatever. Do what you want."
"I want to take care of Virgil." Logic said. "But Logics don't do what they want. Logics do what they need to. And right now, I need to make a poster about the historical and cultural significance of the Establishment ceremony!"
"I can do that!" Roman said. Logic barely glanced at him, looking back to Patton furiously. But Roman wouldn't allow anyone to simply ignore him. He jumped in between Logic and Patton and grabbed Logic's hand. He said, "I can't do anything to fix Virge. But I'm a wizard with glitter glue."
"Please don't put glitter on my project." Logic said. "It has to look like a Logic did it."
"Does that mean you'll let me help?" Roman sounded surprised.
"If that's how you wish to assist in this situation, very well." Logic said, allowing the brief relief that Roman provided. "I will give you my notes and the requirements for the assignment."
"Thank you, Logan!" Roman said, giving him a sudden, tight hug. "I won't let you down!"
"Of course." Logic accepted, feeling his cheeks warm. Roman's embrace brought some sense to him, and he realized just how absurd his behavior has been. He cleared his throat and tried to feel himself again. He said, as steadily as he could, "Thank you. We can take turns observing Virgil."
"I'll-" Janus started.
"I'll watch him first." Patton interrupted.
"Very well." Logic rubbed the bridge of his nose. "I'll figure out how to remove stains from the carpet."
Virgil groaned, throwing his arm over his head. "Bright."
Janus turned the lights off. In the dark, Patton said, "It'll be alright."
And Logic tried very hard to believe it.
Logic cleaned as much of Virgil's mess as he could, getting most of the stain out. Unfortunately the carpet will likely be forever marked, the events of this day permanently remembered through this stain. Logic moved the rug a few feet to the left to cover the blemish.
When Logic was ready, he made his way back upstairs. Janus sat on the floor outside Virgil's room, watching the door. Logic stepped around him and went inside, closing the door quietly behind him.
Patton was sitting on Virgil's bed, looking down at the sleeping Side and brushing his hair soothingly with his fingers.
Logic asked, "Has he vomited again?"
Patton shook his head. He looked up at Logic slowly, like he didn't want to complete the action.
"That's a good sign." Logic said, stepping up to the side of the bed. Virgil looked very small, asleep and without his usual jacket. Logic wanted to rush him to a hospital, despite the poison control informant telling him there was no need. It was hard to listen to reason currently. He wanted to follow his fear, he wanted to bring Virgil somewhere safe.
But unfortunately only time could heal this illness. Virgil would feel better once the toxins move through his system and leave him. It is mildly uncomfortable, but at this dosage, harmless.
Before Logic could sit next to them, Patton turned his fierce glare on him.
"I can't believe you!" Patton hissed, keeping his voice down so Virgil could sleep between them.
"What have I done now?" Logic crossed his arms. He was getting tired with today and wanted this disaster to be over.
"What is this attitude!?" Patton gestured to him, shaking his head. "You have been just awful ever since-"
Logic gestured to Virgil, sleeping on the bed. "Since what? Since our Side almost overdosed? Do you understand what could have happened-?"
"Yes!" Patton grabbed his shoulders and shook him slightly. Logic didn't appreciate the physical contact, but he didn't push him off. "I know! I know he could have died, I understand! If he dies, we die."
Logic was surprised by the emotion in his voice. He felt the bite ebb slightly. He couldn't think of a good enough response. Luckily, Patton wasn't finished.
"But Logan," Patton said desperately. Logic stilled, feeling his own anger dissipate as he looked at Patton's face. His eyes were wide with tears that were on the brink of rolling down his cheeks. His chest felt dark and heavy as he realized how affected Patton was by the situation. He could feel Patton's arms shaking from where he touched him. For once, the contact between them felt cold. "It was an accident."
Logic bit the inside of his mouth. Something inside him refused to believe it could be true. It felt impossible for someone to not know this clear and obvious part of life.
He shook his head.
"It was." Patton repeated. "He thought he was helping."
"A panic attack would not have killed him." Logic said quietly. "He would have been fine without-"
"He was scared." Patton whispered. Logic didn't need him to clarify who he was speaking of.
Logic said, "And I was mad. Am I not allowed to be mad-?"
"You can be mad, but, Logan…" Patton licked his lips and shook his head. "I don't want any part of me to feel like that."
Logic frowned. "Furious?"
"Attacked." Patton glanced back down at Virgil. "I don't want us to hurt ourselves any more than we already have."
Logic was having trouble finding a response.
"Can you watch him for a minute?" Patton asked, slowly sliding out from under Virgil's grip. "I need a breather."
"Right, of course." Logic mumbled, feeling a bit numb. Patton wiped his eyes as he crawled out of bed. The action made Logic's chest twist. Before Patton got to the door, Logic called out, "Patton- I'm sorry."
Patton offered him a small smile, his arms wrapped around himself. He said, "Thanks. But I'm not the one you should be apologizing to."
Logic opened his mouth to speak, but Patton simply turned around and left. In the space between Patton's legs, as the door swung open, Logic caught a glance of Janus' expression, as he tried to look in.
Logic blinked, staring at the wood as the door closed once more.
"Logan?" Virgil's voice was raspy, but strong. He rubbed his eyes and tried to sit up a little.
Logic jumped in surprise, and placed a hand on his back, scooting into the bed himself, "Yes?"
"Did … did Janus drug me?" Virgil asked.
"Yes." Logic said quietly.
Virgil frowned, lowering his hands. He looked at Logic for a moment, his pout admittedly adorable. He broke out into giggles a moment later.
"That's so funny." He snickered, leaning back again.
"No it's not!" Logic felt the now-familiar anger flare. "You could have died!"
Virgil's giggles quieted, but his smile remained. He stared at the ceiling. He shook his head slowly, back, forth, back. He told the ceiling tiles, "I think I love him."
Logic sighed, "That's the overdose talking."
"Yeah." Virgil closed his eyes, grinning still. "Yeah, I love him."
Silently, Logic laid down next to Virgil. He rested his head on his arm. Virgil, upon noticing his new position, curled up against Logic's side. He used Logic's shoulder as a pillow. He thought about that statement; 'I love him', and how it applied to Janus. Logic, too, held much affection for Janus. But this was an unforgiveable sin. How could he have done something so careless to someone they both adored? Logic felt that was almost worse. That his love was harmed deeply by another one of his loves. And Logic, unable to do anything about it, was useless to the both of them.
All Logic could do was stare at the ceiling and recount what had happened. His fear for Virgil, his anger at Janus, even his frustration at Patton. Everything mixed up inside his chest, leaving him feeling disoriented. He had to do something about this.
With these new emotions festering inside, Logic did the only thing he could think of. He found his phone and went to their college website. Under one of the many tabs, he clicked the option 'Licensed Therapy'.
He was a Logic that lost his focus. He needed to find out how to get a hold of his emotions, before they would be the death of him.
