Okay, I've been receiving a lot of questions and suggestions about One for All and Mirio from the comments. I'm glad you guys are commenting, but I'll be honest, I don't have immediate plans for OFA or Mirio just yet. Like I said earlier, this whole subplot will be brought up at a much later time. For now, I would like to know how you all feel about this story as it is. With that out of the way, let's get on with the chapter.
Izuku hadn't even step onto to UA's campus and already he had to fight his greatest challenge yet. It wasn't grades, Kacchan, or even a Villain. No, it was much more insidious. Izuku's greatest enemy was none other than a tie.
Yes, a tie.
It wouldn't have been so bad if Izuku wore a tie before this, but no! Izuku Midoriya never had to wear a tie at all before today. Not at school, not at any formal event, nothing! Why did it had to the first day of school for Izuku to learn how to tie a tie? He spent over ten minutes trying to get that stupid accessory to at least look decent.
The rest of the UA uniform was fine. A bit more formal than his previous school uniforms, but that was to be expected from the most prestigious Hero school in the country. It's just…it would have been nice to be informed about tie tying beforehand.
Nonetheless, Izuku was standing right in front of the doors to UA. The first thing Izuku noticed was the entrance was massive. He guessed some students and faculty had Quirks that made them taller than most, necessitating the need for larger doors. And the students that were passing looks at him told Izuku that he was mumbling again, and that he needed to get inside.
Izuku searched the halls for class 1-A. He had to get directions some from of the older students, but eventually he arrived at the door marked 1-A. Before opening the door, Izuku makes a small wish. He knew Kacchan obviously got in. He just hoped that they wouldn't been in the same class like they used to. Start fresh, away from the horror that is middle school. Oh, and Izuku sort of hoped the glasses guy wasn't in his class as well. He pretty sure glasses guy was a nice person. It was just that he was a bit too intense for Izuku. Taking a deep breath in and out, he opened the door.
"I demand that you take your feet off the desk at once! You are disrespecting school property!"
"Oh, so you think you can throw your weight around, eh? Where are you even from, extra?"
Oh no, it was Kacchan and glasses guy.
"Well, my name is Tenya Iida. My previous school was Somei Academy." Glasses guy introduced himself to Kacchan.
"Oh, a private school kid, huh?" Kacchan mused. "Maybe I should bury you so you wouldn't get any elitist ideas about being better than me?"
"B-bury me-?!" Iida cried out in shock. "What kind of Hero threatens another classmate like that? Are you sure you're even in the right place?!"
'Okay,' Izuku thought. 'Maybe if I make it to my desk quietly, they won't notice me.'
Izuku didn't even make it a couple feet from the door before Kacchan took notice.
"Deku! What in the hell are you doing here?!" Kacchan yelled.
Fighting against his fear, Izuku shakily answered.
"I-I got in, K-kacchan. Same as you."
Even under Kacchan's glare, Izuku still put a brave face.
"I already know that, you nerd!" Kacchan retorted. "I'm wondering what the hell did you do to get in!"
Before Izuku could answer, Iida moved right in front of Kacchan and quickly put out his hand to shake.
"Hello! My name is Tenya Iida!" Iida answered enthusiastically.
"Y-yeah, I heard," Izuku raised his hand as well. "My name is Izuku Midoriya."
"Quit ignoring me!" Kacchan yelled from behind Iida.
"Before anything else, I must apologize," Iida lowered his hand.
"What for?" Izuku asked.
"During the entrance exam, you were able to discern the true meaning of the test and the nature of Rescue Points. I failed to realize that." Iida bowed respectfully. "I acknowledge that you were the better Hero. I humbly ask that you forgive my past remarks and actions against you."
Izuku felt…well, not embarrassed but slightly awkward.
"That's okay," Izuku accepted Iida's apology with a timid wave.
"Good," Oh, Kacchan decided to reinsert himself into the conversation. "Now with Spectacle's dumb apology out the way, I-"
"Oh, Midoriya!"
Izuku looked back to see Uraraka approaching him and Iida with a smile on her face.
"I can't believe we're in the same class," Uraraka noted. "That's great!"
"God damn it!" Kacchan yelled in frustration.
"Hello, I'm Tenya Iida and I am from-"
"Oh yeah, I remember you," Uraraka smiled. "We were all in the same test site together."
"Well, that is correct," Iida lost some of his steam. "I welcome you two to UA on behalf of the class. If you don't mind, how did you two meet?"
"Oh, that's easy. Me and Midoriya first met when I saved him from falling outside of the school."
Izuku turned red from embarrassment from that memory.
"Then he saved me back in the entrance exam," Uraraka continued. "You should have seen it! It was so cool! I was trapped and Izuku stopped the zero-pointer."
"I mean, I didn't do that much," Izuku sheepishly tried to deflect the complement.
"You totally did!" Uraraka pointed at Izuku. "He took out the zero-pointer all by himself. And in one punch, as well!"
Now, the rest of the class were talking amongst themselves about Izuku. Bad enough Izuku didn't know any of these people, now he was the day's gossip. From behind Iida, Izuku saw Kacchan in a mix of anger and confusion. He was definitely upset about not being the subject of his peers, but also because he couldn't see how, in his eyes, Quirkless Izuku could defeat the zero-pointer.
The mumblings continued until the door was slammed open. Everyone turned around to a bright yellow, uh, pod standing in the doorway. The pod had a tired and disheveled face where the head would be.
"It took all of you around eight seconds to shut up. That's not going to cut it."
The pod fell to the floor and crawled its way to the desk like a worm. The class stared dumbfounded as the pod stood up. Now that Izuku could get a better look at it, the pod looked more like a sleeping bag.
The sleeping bag unzipped to reveal a tired-looking man. He had long, stringy black hair with an almost opaque five o'clock shadow. The bags under his eyes were pronounced. He wore a long scarf over a black bodysuit. He pulled out one of those name tags that had the teacher's name on it and put it on the desk.
"My name is Shota Aizawa. I'm your homeroom teacher this year." Aizawa introduced himself.
Izuku, along with the rest of the class, just stared dumbfounded. If Izuku was telepath, he would have guessed that the thought running through his classmates' heads would be "Is this guy our teacher?" Izuku already had doubts. This man looked like he should be getting a better sleep schedule than teaching.
Aizawa pulled up a box and place it on his desk. Inside were multiple sets of clothes.
"Put these on and then meet me on the training grounds," Aizawa ordered. When no one moved, he added, "What are your waiting for? Get to it."
As he left, everyone scrambled for a uniform. As Izuku got his and made his way to the locker room following everyone else, he was nervous about how fast Mr. Aizawa was moving things.
Maybe he just wasn't a morning person.
Several days earlier…
Shota Aizawa wasn't a morning person.
Given his occupation as an underground Hero, this meant he spent most nights on hunting for the Villains not seen on TV. The insidious ones that prey on the weak through the worst ways possible. Kidnappings, drug cartels, human trafficking, you name it, he's seen it. But this wasn't about his nighttime activities. No, this about his new day job, a homeroom teacher for UA. And for some reason, he now had to be in a small meeting room with All Might and the Principal of UA.
Aizawa would admit while he didn't particularly like All Might's image as an undefeatable symbol of good, he did admit he admired the man's heroic drive and tenacity. When All Might fully enrolled as a part of the UA staff, the rest of the teachers including Aizawa were let known the fact about All Might's injuries. So it came to no surprise that Aizawa was sitting with the Number One Hero's true form of an emancipated shell.
The Principal of UA, Nezu, was an anthropomorphic animal with white fur and a large scar along his right eye. He was unique as he was one of the rare chances an animal was born with a Quirk, this being enhanced intelligence and sentience. Through the true origin of his species has been discussed, be him a rodent, a bear, or a dog, all that was important was the fact Nezu was the principal of UA. Behind the charmingly cute face, Nezu had enough power and intelligence move society if he wanted to.
"Hello Eraser Head," Nezu greeted Aizawa by his Hero name.
"Greetings, Eraser Head." All Might nodded.
Aizawa didn't even muster a greeting. He sat down and asked, "Is there a reason you asked us to be here so early?"
"Indeed, I did," Nezu answered. "In fact, this is about one of your upcoming students." He opened a folder of files, pulled out the top one, and slide it over to Aizawa.
It was a medical listing for one Izuku Midoriya. He was a young boy with poofy green hair, freckles, and the body language of someone who was scared at everything. His Quirk didn't have an official title. All that it read was that it was labeled as a telekinetic quirk and its qualities.
"So, this is the one we have to talk about," Aizawa raised an eyebrow. "Anything particular I should know?"
"You did read the description of his Quirk, yes?" Nezu tilted his head.
"For starters, it isn't even properly named. It's just listed as a telekinetic Quirk. Midoriya is able to freely move objects with his mind. The drawback is that if he overdoes it, he gets nosebleeds."
"That sounds fairly normal, correct?" Aizawa hated when Nezu got like this. It meant that the rat knew something everyone doesn't and is waiting to reveal the big surprise.
"Well, I find it odd that nearly a year ago, Midoriya's medical records were mostly the same, save for one small difference."
Nezu slid another piece of paper over to Aizawa. The paper was mostly identical to the other one until Aizawa reached where the paper listed his Quirk: N/A. Izuku Midoriya was listed as Quirkless.
"And all of young Midoriya's records states the exact same thing as the one I just handed you," Nezu read Aizawa's mind.
"And this means what?" Aizawa questioned. "That Midoriya got a Quirk from somewhere else? Surely you didn't do all this research just because of one difference, Nezu."
"I didn't do it on a whim," Nezu gestured to All Might. "In fact, Toshinori brought up the matter to me himself."
Aizawa turned to the Symbol of Peace, who seemed uncomfortable under the Eraser Hero's eyes.
"Yes, I mean, I did." All Might answered. "Though the circumstances of young Midoriya are…strange. I hope you don't mind a long story because this will require context."
"I certainly don't mind," Nezu responded.
"You're not going to let me go until he tells us this, aren't you?" Aizawa questioned the principal.
"Correct."
"Fine, carry on."
All Might cleared his throat.
"It all started when I saved young Midoriya from a Villain I was fighting. After trapping the Villain and signing the young boy's notebook, I leapt off, unaware that Midoriya had clung to my leg until we were in the air. After landing on a rooftop, I accidentally revealed my true form to Midoyria and made him promise to keep it a secret."
All Might didn't even need to look up to know Eraser Head was giving him an aggravated look for revealing his weakened form to a child by accident. All Might breathed in.
"Midoriya asked is someone without a Quirk, someone like him, could be a Hero. I told him no, saying that being a Pro was too dangerous without a Quirk. In retrospect, it was wrong to callously ruin his dreams like that."
"You were right," Aizawa interrupted. "If he was Quirkless, just like you say, it would have been for the best. From what I've seen, the kid barely worked out before he got his Quirk. Midoriya doesn't seem to be one to take initiative on his own; he needed some outside force to drive him. If he wanted to be a Hero just on his dreams alone, then he had no shot of becoming one."
All Might tensed, not wanting to acknowledge that Eraser Head's points were somewhat valid. Nezu wordlessly motioned for All Might to continue.
"Well, after I got him to the streets safely, we went our separate ways. It wasn't till a week later, where I met him once again. Midoriya was attempting to clean up Dagobah Beach on his own, using it as a place to train his body and his new Quirk."
Aizawa wanted clarification but Nezu's paw held him off.
"Seeing him gave me the opportunity to apologize, plus I was impressed by the boy's drive to do better for himself and the community. I offered to train him, still thinking he was the Quirkless boy I saved. He showed me I was wrong."
All Might looked at Aizawa. "Do you remember the boogeyman?"
"Which one?" Aizawa countered.
"The one which was told by mothers to get kids to listen to them by saying if they acted up, the boogeyman would take their Quirks in their sleep and give them to someone else."
Aizawa nodded. He remembered being told that same bedtime story when he was a kid.
"Well, the boogeyman is real." All Might said. "And I killed him three years ago."
"So, you're saying you thought Midoriya got his Quirk from one of the biggest villains in Japan that you personally killed?" Aizawa's question was steeped in skepticism.
"If you knew him, you wouldn't take him lightly. Plus, he was always tough to put down. I sometimes fear he is, even now, still around in the shadows. So, when young Midoriya told me he got a Quirk from something else, I was afraid. Afraid that I had pushed a bright young man to making deals with monsters just so he can fit in."
"And?" Nezu questioned.
"For better or worse, Midoriya wasn't involved with villains." All Might steeled himself for this. "I asked him to tell me how he got his Quirk, and he did. All of it."
"It started after I dropped off on the ground. Devastated, he wandered into Yavin National Park. There, he found a hole in the ground. He described it as not man made nor completely natural. When Midoriya got very close, he could hear buzzing, though he would later clarify that it sounded more like singing. Letting his curiosity get the better of him, he climbed down into the hole and followed the singing to…something."
All Might steeped his hands. "Midoriya described it as crystalline, yet there were organic veins inside it. It took up a good portion of the area it was in. It reacted to Midoriya's body heat when he touched it."
Aizawa had to hold back a comment on how stupid it was for Midoriya to touch things he didn't know.
"Midoriya's memories are a bit fuzzy at this point. He does remember some pain, but the next thing he remembers, he is back at his house with a bloody nose, a lost phone, and telekinetic powers."
There was a pause in the room.
"So, what you're saying is that Midoriya somehow got a Quirk from a thing underneath Yavin National Park, correct?" Aizawa clarified. "And he never thought to report it at all."
"Clearly, he would rather keep that little fact a secret," Nezu chirped up. "After all, in strange circumstances, the government has a bit of a habit to take special individuals and keeping them locked from the outside world just to see what makes them tick."
The smile on Nezu's face and his cheerful tone didn't contract from the harsh reality. If Izuku told the truth about his Quirk's origin, there would be a high chance the boy would be in some government base being experimented on. After all, Nezu had personal experience with that.
"After he told his story, I asked Midoriya to lead me to the hole he found the object." All Might continued. "When we got there, we were stopped by a park ranger. He clarified that the land was unstable, and the area was tapped off. The ranger did confirm that it was not a villain attack. I took Izuku and moved around to where we could see the clearing without park security. When we got there, the hole had been covered up, possibly a cave-in. We couldn't go down in there if we tried."
"Do we know if that object is still down there? Or did it leave if it could?" Aizawa questioned.
The three sat in silence, contemplating the idea of this power-giving artifact either still being below their feet, or somewhere else in the world forcing powers on other people.
"It seems the mystery of the object that gave Midoriya his powers shall remain just that," Nezu declared, "A mystery. For now, we can't debate over where the powers came from, but over how Midoriya uses it."
"Midoriya has a strong heroic will, I can attest," All Might said. "He didn't go into villainy then, and he wouldn't now."
"Still, we need keep an eye on him," Aizawa said. "We have no idea if this is just a simple telekinetic Quirk or something more." He turned to Nezu. "Which is why I suspect you put him in my class."
Nezu smiled. "Am I that obvious? Though, yes, I would like you to oversee how Midoriya's Quirk develops over time."
Aizawa blew air from his nose. "Given what I've seen of him on the entrance exam, he seems to be like another problem child for me. Is that everything or is there more?"
"You will be getting two of the recommendation students: Shoto Todoroki and Momo Yaoyorozu."
Great. Two rich kids from influential families. Hopefully, they won't try and sue like the last ones.
"Oh, joy," Aizawa monotoned.
"That's all for you now," Nezu said. "I have to clear some things with All Might. Go home and get some sleep, would you, Eraser Head?"
"I've got work to do," Aizawa stood and pushed in his chair. "But I'll find time." He left and exited the room.
"Now, about that One for All," Nezu turned to All Might. "Did you find your candidate like you said you were going to do?"
"Well, Nezu, I," All Might scratched his head. "I did, but there were some complications and-"
"Toshinori, tell me from the beginning."
All Might sighed. "After learning about Midoryia's origins, I offered to train him. He accepted and we spent the next ten months cleaning up that beach. Over time, I saw in Midoriya many of the heroic qualities I saw in myself. He wasn't perfect, but I knew he was worthy."
"I am sensing there was something else?" Nezu questioned.
"Well, I didn't reveal all about my Quirk till the day he cleaned up the whole beach a week before the entrance exam. I'll admit, I probably should have told him earlier, but I knew he was ready."
"And?"
"And he said no."
All Might couldn't tell what was worse; the lack of noise, or Nezu's beady eyes not showing his true emotions.
Nope, it was the disappointed tone of "Toshi…"
"Look, I tried, okay?!" All Might defended himself. "I really did, but Midoriya was adamant on becoming a Hero with his Quirk, even if it was given to him. I couldn't force my way into messing with his dream again."
All that he heard was the tiny pocket of air leaving Nezu's nostrils.
"Well, I am sorry that your first pick didn't turn out the way you expected," Nezu said. "Do you have some other candidates, at least?"
"Yes," All Might slumped. "Sir Nighteye recommended me a third-year, Mirio. It's so strange, he's also most like a clone of me, except instead of smashing, he phases through everything."
"Well, at least you have told young Mirio about your power and his status as your successor, right Toshi?"
All Might guiltily looked away.
"Toshi…,"
"I haven't found the right time!" All Might defended. "And besides, I can still do good out there and in here, even if it is for a few hours."
"Toshi, you have to realize that Mirio will need training in order to handle the power of One for All," Nezu explained. "It will be a completely different way of using a Quirk than he's used to. Plus, the sooner you get started with him, the easier of a time Mirio will get accustomed to One for All. Plus, old friend, you can't be around forever. I know it may seem hard for you, but you will have to leave the world to the younger generation. And, just like earlier, the sooner you start, the better it will turn out."
All Might sighed in defeat, knowing that he couldn't argue his way out. "Okay, Nezu, I'll get on it. Just, give me some time."
"I will, Toshi. Just remember that time is a finite thing. Things often change sooner than we expect."
Now…,
Everyone changed and was currently outside at the grounds. The UA gym uniform they all wore were blue in color, with a white "U" in the front with a red boarder in the front and an "A" on the back. Surprisingly, everybody's uniform fitted perfectly. Amazing what a proper school budget can do.
Aizawa paced around, lightly tossing a softball in his hands.
"50-meter dash, ball throw, grip test, standing long jump, repeated side-to-side, seated toe touch, sit ups, and long-distance runs." Aizawa listed. "These, and such exercises, were ones used in your middle schools' P.E. courses. Of course, you weren't allowed to use your Quirks due to the Board of Education's insistence that these tests needed to be standardized, that all men are created equal."
Aizawa gripped the softball. "That method of thinking is outdated and illogical. In order to become Heroes, one must know their limits, which includes their Quirk. For your first assignment, you will do these exercises again, only this time you will be able use your Quirks."
"Um, Mister Aizawa, sir," Uraraka raised her hand. "What about orientation?"
"UA allows its teachers freedom in how they teach their classes. In my case, it allows me to ignore superfluous things such as orientation and get straight into teaching."
Aizawa scanned the student body. He gazed over at Kacchan and Izuku before locking his sights on the green-haired telekinetic.
"Midoriya, you did decently well," Aizawa stated. "What was your record pitch?
Izuku sweated at the sudden attention.
"A-Around 40 meters, sir," Izuku mumbled.
If Aizawa was secretly judging such a low number, he didn't show it. He tossed the softball to Izuku who barely caught it.
"Do it again, only this time you can use your Quirk however you like. Just don't leave that circle." Aizawa pointed an area that overlooked a wide field.
Izuku gulped. He could feel all eyes on him, especially Kacchan. The explosion wielder was most likely upset that despite getting top score, he was being unrecognized for his talents by Aizawa. Izuku could practically hear Kacchan growl under his breath. Izuku made his way to the circle.
Izuku looked out to the empty field. He steadied his breath. This would be different. He has a Quirk. He knows how to use it. Izuku doesn't have to be the worthless loser he was. After securing the softball with his telekinesis, he let it go, just floating there.
Izuku let out a breath. He pulled his arm back into a pitching stance, his powers mimicking his stance. With a yell of effort, he shot his arm forward, his telekinesis rocketing the ball into the horizon. Izuku looked at the disappearing ball with a mix of joy and pride.
As he turned to see his score, Izuku thought he noticed his teacher's hair…falling down? Whatever, it was too brief to care, as Izuku looked to his score.
675.8 meters. Pretty impressive, since Izuku never really tested to see how far he could throw things with his powers. Izuku heard the numerous mummers of his peers, all talking about how amazing his Quirk was.
Unfortunately, there was always one, loud dissenter.
"DEKU! HOW THE FUCK DID YOU DO THAT!?" Kacchan roared as he charged right at Izuku. "TELL ME, YOU LITTLE - !"
Izuku cringed on instinct, putting his hands up in self-defense. The blows never came, for when Izuku opened his eyes to see Kacchan suspended in place by what looked like silver bandages.
"What the hell is this?" The blonde teen struggled to get free.
Izuku followed them to their source, his teacher with his hair levitating and his eyes glowing red.
"It's too early in the morning for me to be dealing with this," Aizawa muttered to himself before plainly speaking. "Now, quit this nonsense and I'll let you go. I'm already getting dry eye as it is."
Kacchan, recognizing that he couldn't fight his way out, complied and was set free. Meanwhile, Izuku stood stunned seeing the display of his teacher's power. The scarf, the googles, the floating hair, and the fact that Kacchan's explosions suddenly went out. It all clicked.
"Oh my gosh, you're Eraser Head, the Eraser Hero!" Izuku announced. "Your Quirk allows you to cancel out most Quirks through eyesight! You're an underground hero, which means you get to avoid a lot of the publicity as other pros."
"Apparently, not enough," Aizawa snarked before turning to Kacchan. "Bakugo, pull another stunt like that again, and you'll be on the ground faster than you can blink. Understand?"
Kacchan didn't verbally agree, but the nod and less aggressive stance made his answer loud and clear.
Aizawa rubbed his eyes and turned to the rest of the students. "This is what we'll be doing most of the day. Before any training can begin, one must know their own limits. Only then can you succeed."
The rest of the student body began to converse amongst themselves, talking about the opportunity to cut loose with their powers like never before.
"I can't wait to get started!"
"Oh man, I am going to ace this!"
"This is going to be so much fun!"
"Fun? You think this is fun?" The whole atmosphere felt several times cooler after Aizawa spoke up. "You all will be spending the next three years of your life training to become Heroes, and you think it will be 'fun'?"
"Okay, I'll have some fun," Aizawa gave a toothy smile, something that froze most of students to their core. "Whoever places last will be expelled immediately."
A chorus of protest aroused over this decision.
"But, sir, it's only our first day! That's not fair," Uraraka protested.
"Natural disasters are not fair. Villain attacks are not fair. Even simple bad luck can lead to tragic accidents that are not fair," Aizawa listed. "The world is full of unfairness, and the soon you all learn that the better. A hero's job is to combat this unfairness every day. This the goal of UA: to train the next generation of Heroes. And besides, this is what the school's motto is all about: go beyond, Plus Ultra."
"And don't hold back," Aizawa added with a more serious tone.
Izuku stand in shock at the threat of expulsion. For once, he couldn't just get a break, he thought. But no matter, Izuku pledged to give it his all.
The first event was the 50-meter dash. It was really simple, just run to the end as fast as you can. Izuku made note of the numerous Quirks that were on display. Iida used the engines in his calves to run extremely fast. His opponent used her legs to leap like a frog to the other side. Many people also had to simply run across due to their Quirks not giving them a speed advantage. Izuku could have used his telekinesis to pull himself along the track, however he couldn't really test the speed yet and so, he ran behind the smoke trail of Kacchan's explosions. His lack of speed was shown here, as his time, 7.02 seconds, was far behind most of his classmates.
The next test was grip strength. Izuku watched as Shoji, a tall boy with white hair, a face mask, and six arms that were connected by a fleshy web, gripped the machine with three hands and put 540 kilograms of force onto it. Izuku stared at his own handheld machine. He never tried to measure the crushing power of his telekinesis. Still feeling unsure of himself, Izuku lifted up the machine. Closing his eyes, Izuku imagined his Quirk was squeezing the machine like a ball. Yeah, a nice stress ball.
This worked until Izuku heard metal rending and dropped the machine in surprise. Turns out his Quirk started to actually crush the machine, leaving it looking like it took a brief trip in a trash compactor. Worse, there was no recorded number; all that was displayed was an error message. Izuku took his broken machine to Aizawa, who simply took Izuku's score as "N/A".
Standing long was where Izuku had to get rid of his worry about flying. A good chunk of students managed to clear the pit wholesale, be it the French kid with the belly-button laser, or Kacchan who rocket jumped over the pit. When it was Izuku's turn, he called upon his power to lift him over the pit. While he did make it, it wasn't the most gracefully of trips. Izuku compared it to old movie stunts where actors flew around with wires. He wobbled in the air as he slowly made his way over. At least he landed on his feet.
Repeated side-steps were another exercise that Izuku had to rely on his own physical prowess. However, his stamina was good enough that he last a while longer than most of his classmates. However, once again, his speed couldn't help him. Especially after he saw some small boy bouncing in between mounds of purple balls made up of his own Quirk.
Since Izuku was the example for the ball throw, he could sit this one out and observe his classmates show off their Quirks. And show off they did! They were all so cool! Izuku took down notes on all of them. One girl made a cannon from her body to fire the ball. A boy with white and red hair used a column of ice to rocket the ball. Even Kacchan did impressively, sending the ball flying 705.2 meters with an explosion. Too bad he then loudly rubbed his score in Izuku's face.
What surprised everyone was Uraraka. Izuku knew her Quirk affected gravity, so it didn't surprise him when he saw her make the ball float. What surprised him along with everyone else was that the ball never came down at all. The scoreboard labeled Uraraka's score as infinity. At least there was no way any of them could top that.
The next two exercises went by quickly. Izuku was really unsure if he could use his Quirk to help him. After all, he crushed the gripping machine by accident. Did he really want to use it on his own body just to get an advantage? Izuku decided no, and he did his exercises by his own stamina. Of course, he would be out shown by students that were more flexible and had more stamina. The last exercise was a distance run; run as long as you can. Since the goal was endurance and not speed, Izuku did decently well. However, decent may not have saved him.
Izuku looked warily at the scoreboard. A rolling circle indicated that the results were still being calculated. He, along with the rest of the class, held their breaths in suspense.
"And here are the results," Aizawa stated.
Izuku let out a sigh of relief. He had made it eleventh place. Sure, it wasn't the best spot. He could have scored higher overall, but at least he wasn't in last.
That title belonged to poor Minoru Mineta, the small boy with grapes on his head. Despite his outstanding side-to-side technique, his other scores did not help him in the slightest. The grape boy fell to his knees, crying in despair. The rest of the student body awkwardly stayed away, besides one guy with a lightning bolt streak in his hair who tried to mediocrely reassure Mineta. Izuku had mixed feelings: on one hand, he was sad seeing Mineta's dreams getting crushed on his first day of school. On the other hand, Izuku was glad it wasn't him getting expelled.
Aizawa stared with disinterest as Mineta crawled pitifully and begged to be kept in. Aizawa ignored the boy and announced that the scores were final and there was nothing the students could do about it.
"Oh, and about the expulsion."
Aizawa gave one of the most terrifying smiles Izuku had ever seen.
"I lied."
A collective gasp of "What?!" echoed through the class. Aizawa raised his hand to silence the students and gave his explanation.
"It was a logical ruse designed to push you to do your best. Nothing more."
"It was fairly obvious." Izuku turned to see the girl who made the cannon, Momo Yaoyorzu, make the statement. In fact, Izuku didn't hear her voice in the collective 'what' from earlier. "I mean, he wouldn't expel one of us on the first day, right?"
Izuku turned to look at his homeroom teacher. While his face didn't offer any answers, Izuku had a suspicion that Aizawa had expelled students before and would have done so with this class.
While most of the class were relieved that the expulsion threat was a lie, Aizawa gave out orders.
"Change back to your uniforms and then head back to homeroom. On the desk is a copy of the syllabus for each of you. You don't have anything else for the rest of the day, so go home and read up on it for tomorrow. You're dismissed."
Izuku let out another breath he didn't know he was holding. As he started to leave, he felt as if he was being stared at. He turned to fight the ice boy, the one who had white and red hair. Based on the scoreboards, his name was Shoto Todoroki. Izuku locked eyes with Todoroki. This gave Izuku more time to notice things about Todoroki. For example, Todoroki had a red patch around his left eye. His hair was also split symmetrical: his left side was red, while his right side was white. His eyes were two different colors, both of which were glaring at him. Izuku had no idea what Todoroki's issue was, but before he could act on it, Todoroki looked away and left.
Izuku hoped this was the last hostile encounter today.
"Deku!" Izuku was shoved by Kacchan, who got right into his face.
Well, there goes that hope.
"I don't know how you got a Quirk, and frankly I don't care." Kacchan stated. "All you have to know is to not get in my way. I proved I was better than you even with a new Quirk. So, listen carefully Deku, don't try and upstage me again. This is my Hero origin, and it doesn't need some useless nerd mucking it. Got it?"
Izuku nodded along, but within him was anger. He was tired of being seen as useless by Kacchan. He proved himself worthy of being here, and he wouldn't let his friend's ego and self-importance to be an excuse to put Izuku down. Izuku's Quirk was powerful and talented, just like Kacchan. In fact, there was a small voice goading Izuku to show Kacchan how strong Izuku's Quirk really was.
Before Izuku could act, Kacchan had already turned and left. Izuku breathed all that anger out. That was strange. Sure, Izuku got upset at Kacchan's behavior but never where he wanted to hurt his old friend. Before he could sink in deeper, Izuku heard someone call out his name.
It was Uraraka with Iida trailing behind.
"Midoriya!" The gravity girl called out. "I was wondering where you were. You did pretty good out there."
Izuku blushed from the complement. "I mean, you and Iida did better than me."
"Indeed, though I am glad that no one got expelled." Iida said. "I understand that UA's teaching method is more free-hand than other schools, but there should be something against any expulsions on the first day."
"Yeah, I think that was a bit too much. But at least we all did our best, right?" Izuku tried to look on the bright side.
"Hey, do you go by Midoriya or Deku?" Uraraka asked. "I mean, that Bakugo guy was yelling it, and I wanted to ask first."
"Oh, well, Deku is an old nickname Kacchan gave to me when we were kids." Uraraka covered her mouth to prevent a giggle at Kacchan's nickname. "If you mess up the kanji in my name, it can be spelled as Deku, or useless."
"That is not exactly what I would call a friendly nickname." Iida noted. "In fact, Bakugo has been nothing but hostile to everyone else."
"Yeah, he can be like that. A lot." Izuku added.
"I was thinking about it, Deku," Uraraka spoke up. "I thought it sound similar to Dekiru. You know, like I can do it."
"Huh, never thought of it that way." Izuku said.
"Do you mind if I call you Deku?" Uraraka asked sincerely.
"No! No problem at all. It sounds nice coming from you."
Izuku realized what he just said and turned away in embarrassment. He so did not want the cute girl to see him turn red like a stop sign.
"I see that despite such a short time together, you two have obviously developed a strong connection!" Iida spoke up, chopping the air with his arms. "However, I will continue to use Midoryia's name as a professional would, since we are training to become pro Heroes after all."
"That's…cool, man." Izuku nodded.
The three walked to the station together before leaving on their separate ways. While traveling back home, Izuku realized he made actual friends today. Despite the rocky start of it all, maybe UA would turn out good in the end.
As the students leaved, Aizawa waited till they were gone before turning to meet his unexpected visitor. As he turned, he came face to face with the Symbol of Peace, buff form and everything.
"How long were you watching?" Aizawa asked.
"I only got here halfway into it, but I heard enough." All Might answered. "Now cut the crap and answer me truthfully."
"And what would that be?"
"I know you were lying about faking the expulsion threat. I've read your files. You kicked out an entire class last year."
"I did," Aizawa answered. "And I also reenrolled them within a week. Those kids were spoiled brats who thought their Quirks would let them coast through life. That expulsion was a wake-up call for them, and they all took it. Were you worried about your protégé failing to meet my expectations?"
"I might have had doubts, but I knew young Midoriya would earn his spot in this school," All Might crossed his arms. "I know I cannot coddle him, especially after he promised to make it under his own power. Besides, what I didn't know is why you didn't expel young Mineta. He did get last after all."
"Honestly, I had half a mind to. He thinks with his hormones more than his brain and it would be pessimistic of me to say he's a walking harassment lawsuit waiting to happen. However, the boy already has control of his Quirk and the potential to expand it. I train kids with potential, something this class has. All I have to do is whip him up into shape and focus more on heroics than women."
All Might nodded at his fellow teacher's reasoning.
"If you're wondering what I think about Midoriya, I think he has potential but a long hike to go." Aizawa said. "He looks uncomfortable with his own power. I could tell that he has the basics down but is too unsure of himself to try out different uses of his power."
The two men looked to make sure no one was eavesdropping before All Might lowered his voice.
"Speaking of young Midoriya, were you able to cancel his Quirk?"
"That's one of the first things I did. Usually, I'd call on the top scorer to be the example. However, I chose Midoriya instead. When he prepared to throw the ball with his power, I used my Quirk."
"And?" All Might asked.
Aizawa grimaced. "It didn't work. Midoriya still used his telekinesis like nothing had happened."
All Might cupped his chin in thought. "But what does that mean? Is young Midoriya's Quirk a mutation-type? That's the only type not affected by your Eraser Quirk?"
"Really? Telekinesis as a mutation-type Quirk?" Aizawa scoffed. "It doesn't function like a mutation-type; it has all the trappings of an emitter-type."
"Like I asked, so what?"
"Then there's a possibility that Midoriya doesn't have a Quirk. That thing you described him meeting may have mutated that child beyond our understanding. Someone Quirkless, but with a power."
All Might purred in thought. "It does sound too strange to be real. Then again, Quirks were once thought of as strange as well. You want me to report this to Nezu?"
"No, I'll do it." Aizawa stated. "I also want to make sure the rat keeps an eye on Midoriya."
"I understand your skepticism, but I cannot see Midoriya fall into villain. The boy has a heart of a Hero."
"From what I've seen of him, I'd agree. However, we've got a child with a power that we can't control through normal means. It brings up an old quote I remember, 'Power corrupts, but absolute power corrupts absolutely'."
Aizawa starts to walk away before All Might calls out to him.
"Surely, you don't think Midoryia's own Quirk would corrupt him, do you?"
"I don't know," Aizawa turned to answer. "But I know that boy has some issues. Midoriya and Bakugo seem to have a history, with Bakugo being an aggressor and Midoriya being submissive. Call me cynical, but when someone put under that circumstance gets something to fight back, it's just a ticking time bomb before Midoriya snaps back."
All Might watched Aizawa go before leaving for the inside. He was confident that Midoriya would not let himself be manipulated by his own powers. However, he had a sinking feeling that Aizawa may be more correct than he would like to admit. And All Might hoped that Midoriya wouldn't prove Aizawa right.
And that's it for this chapter. Man, this is a long one. I want to thank everyone for reading this and sending feedback. It's been a lot!
I had trouble wondering if I could split this into two chapters, but I decided to make it a big one instead. I hope the scenes with All Might and Aizawa clear up any confusion within the story. I'm nervous it won't turn out the way I expected it to, but that's all up to you readers.
Next chapter might not be as long, but it might take as long. I have other projects to do, so I have to divide my time between writing and college stuff. Hope you all understand.
That's all I've got. See ya next time!
