Ruby got up that next morning, she looked at the clock and saw it was around 9 AM. She decided that she might as well go to the gym before getting her day started, she had been going for about a couple of months. She knew she should have started sooner, especially now because she was starting to notice her curves developing on her body. She doubted that her teammates or Team JNPR knew that she went to the gym but after what happened last night, she couldn't care less.
Speaking of her teammates, Ruby had jumped down from her bed to see their states and by God she was not impressed. All three of them looked ragged, their hair was a mess, and she could tell that they were hung over. 'And that kids is why you drink responsibly', Ruby thought with an eye roll as she went to her drawers to grab her workout clothes. Once she got changed Ruby quietly exited the dorm as she did not want to wake her teammates up, mostly because she did not want them to know about her whereabouts.
Ruby got to the gym and it was a ghost town, just the way she liked it. Most people on a Saturday morning were busy sleeping in, so there would be nobody to hog all the machines or play annoying music. Most importantly they wouldn't ask Ruby any stupid questions like why she was here or where her team was. She got on the elliptical and started her workout, she needed to be more flexible than ever if her new combat style was going to work. After the elliptical, Ruby moved on to weights and did that for about a half hour. Once it was all over and her joints had been pushed to the limit, she returned to the dorm.
Upon returning to the dorm, she found her teammates to be out of their beds and out of the room itself. 'Probably went to Vale, oh well not my problem', Ruby thought as she grabbed her regular clothes and went to the shower to get all the stink off her body. As the water ran down on her, Ruby went through her plan for today. She wanted to go to the shooting range again to keep her skill sharp, then she would go to Vale to get food and restock her ammo. Finally, she would come back to Beacon, train in a private room and then study for Oobleck's test, as she didn't get the chance to yesterday.
Ruby got out of the shower and put on her combat outfit, then she looked in the mirror. 'I really hope my new combat clothes get her soon. This look is getting old.' She thought as she went outside to collect her things. She grabbed her scroll, her wallet and some gum that she hid in her desk. She thought that she might need to grab some sunglasses when she got to Vale, she had been putting it off for too long. After that she went to go grab Crescent Rose and headed off to the shooting range.
People might need to start calling Ruby the sharpshooter because she was killing it again! She got a perfect score and was even switching up between the sniper and her new pistols. It was as if she couldn't miss even if she tried, honestly Ruby was surprised. She had always been good with a gun, but she never knew that she was this good. 'People might have to start calling me Deadshot.' Ruby chuckled as she remembered one of her favorite comic book characters. Ruby put Crescent Rose back in its' carrying form and headed to get on one of the bullheads leaving for Vale.
As Ruby was on the ship headed to Vale, she wondered if she would see her teammates there. If she was being perfectly honest, she really did not want to see them. Last night had been playing in her mind over and over, she had to stop thinking about it though as she would be lost in her own anger. However, it did make Ruby understand something that she should have understood before, which was to love herself first. She tried too hard to make the team work and to present herself as friendly and welcoming and look where that brought her.
Her teammates found her incredibly annoying and constantly nitpicked at every little thing that she did wrong. At this point, who the hell cares what they thought of her? If they were going to constantly going to complain about everything than why should she care about being the leader or how the team was going to go? It was clear that they were not going to get over her faults and would not accept their own. Ruby could name a ton of faults that Weiss, Blake, and Yang had but decided not too because it would hurt the team and their dynamic. Her teammates apparently didn't share the same thought, and Ruby was tired of being treated like an annoyance.
The bullhead had finally landed and Ruby set off to a ramen shop that she frequented. She hadn't tried it before she came to Beacon, but she and her team came here one time and she was hooked. She always got the same thing Spicy Chicken Ramen with hot instead of mild. In her mind it was the meal of the gods and she enjoyed every bite of it. Once she was done, she paid the bill and walked a few blocks to this sunglasses shop. Ruby had quite a bit of money from her birthdays over the last few years, unlike Yang she did not really spend a lot.
She got to the shop and immediately found a pair of shades that she liked, they looked like futuristic aviators. They were a bit pricey, but Ruby had the funds and they would look great with her new outfit since the shades were black and had a red trim going around the edges. Ruby paid for the sunglasses and even got a protection plan; she never trusted her things to stay non-broken when Yang was around. After that, she went to the dust shop where she first fought Torchwick and refueled on bullets. She made sure to get regular bullets and dust bullets of each type. You never know what kind of dust you need in any situation as a huntress, so she made sure to get all of them. Once this was all over, she got on the bullhead and headed back to Vale.
Previously, Ruby would enter her dorm room and would find said room empty and her teammates missing. Now however, it was the complete opposite. As soon as she walked through the door Yang brought her into a bone crushing hug. Ruby also saw Weiss and Blake giving her death glares, she could already imagine that she was not going to like the outcome of this. First things first though, she needed her sister to release her so she could get her air back.
"OK Yang I NEED AIR TO BREATHE!" Ruby yelped and Yang let go of her. Ruby tried to catch her breath but was interrupted when a certain Weiss Schnee got in her face with that glare of hers. 'Oh here we go…' Ruby thought as she nearly rolled her eyes.
"Ruby Rose, why have you been out so long? Do you know what we thought happened to you? I guess this is what happens when we have a child as our leader-" Weiss kept ranting and Ruby rolled her eyes and made her way to her desk.
She looked at her scroll and saw that she did have messages from the three, which she found funny because when she texted them about their whereabouts, she got no response. 'Oh well 1 for 30, not bad', Ruby thought as she was grabbing her books. She needed to go to the library to study for Oobleck's test and to go over those recordings she made of him. It was going to be a long night as she was going to have to slow the record speed just to understand him. Then a yell from Weiss jolted Ruby out of her thoughts.
"You're not listening to me, are you?!" Weiss yelled as Ruby turned back to her while rolling her eyes.
"Gee, what gave it away?" Ruby said uncaringly as she went for the exit but was stopped by Yang.
"Wait where are you going now?" Yang questioned as she was not happy with Ruby being out all day.
"To mind my business, now if you will excuse me." Ruby said as she pushed a shocked Yang out of the way but heard another voice.
"Ruby what is your problem? All we want to know is where you are going, we are a team so shouldn't you –" Blake started but was interrupted by Ruby Rose.
"Blake don't you have a book you should be reading?" Ruby asked as Blake's mouth dropped open and she looked highly offended.
"That is what I thought, and like I said I am going to mind my business. Now how about all of you mind yours? Bye." Ruby gave the peace sign and was out the door, leaving a very shocked WBY. What the hell happened to their leader to make her act like that?
"Um can someone tell me what the hell that was about?" Weiss asked her teammates as she was shocked by Ruby's tone.
"I…I honestly have no idea. I never knew that Ruby had a bad side like that, she has never shown it before, nor has she ever talked like that." Yang said as she was wondering what Ruby's problem was.
"Do you guys think she is having problems or something? I mean she acted like she wanted nothing to do with us, but we haven't done anything!" Blake said as she was pissed about Ruby's book comment. They all thought about it but soon let it go.
"You know what let's head to Vale with Team JNPR. Whatever Ruby has going on she clearly doesn't want us to help with it, if her tone is anything to go by. I am sure that things will work out on their own." Yang said and the other two nodded as they went to Vale.
Meanwhile Ruby went to a private training room before studying. She needed practice with her new combat style and figured that now was as good a time as any. When she was on the bullhead earlier, she got an idea of how to implement her new close combat style by watching Bayonetta. The woman had used guns on her hands and feet as a pursuing attack, she called them Bullet Arts. So Ruby had the idea to incorporate that into her new combat style.
She practiced for about an hour and a half, following the movements on her scroll and mimicking Bayonetta with her pistols. It took her a little while but she finally figured out how she could have close combat without using hand-to-hand. If the enemy got close, she would reel them in with her scythe, and then on the turnaround transform to the dual pistols and knock them back with bullets like Bayonetta did. If the enemy dodged and close enough for a strike, she would parry with her guns just like Red Hood did and shoot them when they were off guard. Yeah, she was sure that it was going to work. Once she got some more practice in, she went to the cafeteria to get a takeout meal and then went to the library to study for two hours.
It was about 11 when Ruby came back from the library exhausted by what the day had brought. Honestly, though it was pretty great as she was excited about the future. She was going to prove everyone wrong and she was sure that life was going to get better for her now that she had cut her teammates off from her life. Speaking of which her teammates where not here, most likely in Vale again but it was not her business. Ruby took a shower and went to bed, excited for what the week would bring.
The weekend had passed, and Ruby was still being distant to her teammates just like she wanted. Her teammates seemed to have no problem with it, why would they? After all, this was what they wanted especially after that night with Team JNPR. Ruby woke up to a message on her scroll, apparently her new outfit was delivered to her locker. She smiled to herself, finally she could move on from this dress and proceed to being the huntress she wanted to be. She got up from her bed, got dressed, and went to the cafeteria. Her teammates would most likely meet her at class, which was Oobleck and today was that damn test.
Sure enough, after Ruby got food and went to the grab her seat at Oobleck's classroom, her teammates came in a few minutes later. They all walked up to Ruby with anger on their faces, not just about this morning but about this whole weekend. The girl was being a jerk, treating them like they did something wrong when they in fact had done nothing! Well, at least to their knowledge they did not do anything wrong. Weiss as expected was the first one to say something.
"You! Why did you just leave us this morning! You could have waited and we could have come here as a team." Weiss said not liking Ruby's new attitude.
"I was hungry." Ruby said shrugging as she did not even look at Weiss, she was looking at her notes one last time before Oobleck handed out the tests.
The WBY looked pissed again, they did not like Ruby's new attitude at all. Sure, the one before might have been annoying, but it was better than this. They were not the only one, Team JNPR was looking at them and they too were confused about Ruby's behavior. What happened to the sweet girl that they knew who loved weapons and cookies? Their thoughts were shoved in the back of their heads as Doctor Oobleck came into the room with the tests for the students.
Oobleck passed them out and told the students they had one hour to complete the test. The test was about Vale's involvement in the Great War and its' alliance with Vacuo. The WBY were nervous because Oobleck's tests were brutal, but they were even more nervous about Ruby. She had less knowledge than them because of her being moved two years, so they hoped she had study enough so that she would not fail.
Little did they know however, Ruby was not nervous in the slightest especially with all the studying she did over the weekend. If those recordings didn't help her with this, then nothing else would since they were literally Doctor Oobleck's words. She got the test and saw that a lot of the questions were ones that she knew the answers to. She smirked to herself, this was going to be a breeze.
An hour had come and gone, to be honest Ruby did not need the whole hour. She needed about 40 minutes to give her best answers to the questions and she used the other twenty minutes to go back over her work. She needed to make sure that she did not leave any details that could help her get more points. After the test was over, it was time to go to combat class with Professor Goodwitch. As she and her teammates got out the door, they saw Team JNPR waiting for them.
"Hey guys, how did you think you did-" Jaune attempted to ask but was cut off as he saw Ruby keep walking towards Goodwitch's classroom. All of team JNPR stared at her retreating form in shock and some anger.
"What's with her?" Nora asked a bit angrily.
"We have no idea; she has been acting weird lately though. We will have to figure it out later, come on guys we can't be late for combat class or Goodwitch will have our asses." Yang said as she really wanted to figure out what was going on with her sister.
The rest of the group entered the classroom and saw Ruby sitting in an empty row just playing with her scroll, they joined her on that row. Ruby didn't even look to her right; she knew who was sitting next to her no matter how much she didn't want them to. However, Ruby decided it was not worth the argument to tell them to go sit somewhere else. Just then Professor Glynda Goodwitch came into the classroom and was beginning the exhibition rounds.
"Alright class if there are requests then I will randomly choose two students to duel it out in an exhibition match. Let us see, how about we have Ruby Rose and Pyrrha Nikos face off? Go change into your combat outfits and grab your weapons girls." Glynda ordered and both Pyrrha and Ruby had gotten up from their seats and went to the locker room. Everyone in the seats bet that Pyrrha was going to win, she was a tournament champion after all.
When Ruby got to her locker and opened it a huge smile was on her face, there it was in the box her new combat outfit! She tore it open and immediately put in on, then she attached the cloak the back of her jacket. She took one look in the mirror and was incredibly pleased. 'Oh yeah that is what I am talking about! Alright Crescent Rose time to rock!' Ruby thought as she headed to the arena.
Pyrrha was standing in the arena and then out came Ruby who shocked pretty much everyone in the room. Gone was the dress she usually wore and in was a brand-new combat outfit. It was black cargo pants with ammo on the sides, a black t-shirt, and a black leather jacket with that had her cloak attached to end of it like a cape. The outfit really showed off Ruby's features that none of them knew existed, like seriously when did Ruby get curves? A lot of boys had to admit that the outfit plus the long hair made Ruby pretty. The most shocked were the WBY themselves, when did Ruby buy a new outfit and when did she look so in shape? Ruby got out her scythe ready to fight, then saw everyone looking at her and got annoyed.
"What are you all looking at?" Ruby said annoyed in which everyone blushed and looked away. Professor Goodwitch was shocked by Ruby's knew outfit and her knew attitude, but knew that she had to get control of the class.
"Yes well, are both combatants ready?" Glynda asked and both Pyrrha and Ruby nodded.
"Then let the match begin!" Glynda yelled.
Pyrrha soon dashed at Ruby who stood in defense waiting for the attack, and when it came, she blocked Pyrrha's spear with her scythe. Ruby then kicked Pyrrha back who blocked it her shield as the show kept clashing with each other's blades trying to overpower the other. After a little while Pyrrha had caught Ruby stumbling and smirked, then using her spear to attack Ruby at her core. But the closer she got with her spear she saw Ruby smiling.
This was what Ruby wanted to draw Pyrrha in with her spear and get the jump on her. As soon as she got close, Ruby hit a button on Crescent Rose that separated it into two pistols, then twirled around as she got behind Pyrrha leaving her wide open. She fired a few shots at Pyrrha close range and Ruby did not miss, knocking a few chips off Pyrrha's aura. The amazon had staggered a bit trying to regain her composure, as she looked at Ruby who was just smiling.
The others in the stand could not believe what had just happen, Ruby Rose had gotten a few hits on the reigning tournament champion Pyrrha Nikos. The WBY and the JNR were the most shocked however at this outcome. When did Ruby have the time to upgrade her weapon and create a new battle style? Is this what she did when they went to Vale and they left her all alone? They thought that she was just playing video games or something they didn't know that she was doing this!
Pyrrha got up and focused on Ruby who was in a defense stance with her new toys. She would have to be careful about this as Ruby clearly had a new battle style and a new sense of confidence. Pyrrha charged at Ruby again attacking her with spear, only to have Ruby spin her pistols and knock the spear out of the way. Pyrrha was open again and Ruby shot at her again, knocking more chips of Pyrrha's aura!
Ruby then dashed at Pyrrha, finally going on the offensive and she waited just until the right moment that Pyrrha switched to gun mode on her weapon. Seeing her chance she activated her speed semblance, getting right behind Pyrrha who did not have time to defend herself as she was in the middle of weapon transformation. Ruby gave Pyrrha two kicks to the back and knocked Milo out of her hands. She then fired a shot at the ground, causing Pyrrha to stumble and Ruby transformed her scythe to trip her up, resulting in Pyrrha getting on the floor.
Ruby saw this chance and knocked Akouo out of her other hand, and then transformed her scythe into rifle mode pointing it inches to Pyrrha's face. Ruby then looked down at Pyrrha, who had a shocked look on her face, with a proud smile.
"I believe that is game, set and match." Ruby said proudly as she retracted Crescent Rose and started walking away. Glynda was shocked at what happened but quickly composed herself.
"The winner is Ruby Rose! Miss Nikos are you alright?" Glynda could not help but ask as she saw her top student on the floor.
"Oh yes I am alright Professor Goodwitch." Pyrrha assured, but she could not stop looking at Ruby. Where did that new combat style come from? When did she make those pistols and what happened to Ruby to cause her to become…cold?
"H-how the hell did she did to that?!" Weiss could not help but asked and everyone around her had the same question. Things about Ruby were becoming more and more questionable and they were just adding up. First there was her new attitude which none of them liked and wanted it to go away immediately. Then there was the fact that during Oobleck's test Ruby did not seem worried at all, even though her grades have been subpar. Then she gets a new outfit and some new features. Now she just beat Pyrrha and she made it look easy! What the hell was going on with her?
"That was…incredible. It's like she read Pyrrha's movements before she even made them!" Ren said amazed.
"Yeah it was…but something is definitely up with her though. I hope this new attitude of hers isn't permanent and she figures out exactly what is bothering her." Yang said as a part of her was happy for her sister but most of her was worried about her. The others agreed.
Ruby was walking happily to her locker and put Crescent Rose back in it. She was so happy that her new fighting style worked out and on Pyrrha no less! The girl was a tournament champion and thanks to the ideas Ruby got from those videos she was able to beat her! She had to admit that she was feeling herself a little bit, she might even go to Vale and treat herself to some sweets. She was about to head back to class until she heard a voice.
"Hey Ruby?" Pyrrha said and Ruby turned around, trying not to look annoyed.
"Yeah?" Ruby asked, wanting to know what she wanted.
"Um I just wanted to say good job, you did really well." Pyrrha said with a nervous smile, knowing Ruby's new attitude.
"You too." Ruby said with little emotion as she just walked away, not seeing the frown on Pyrrha's face.
A few days had passed, and Ruby's attitude had not let up, in fact it got a bit worse. Even during lunch time, she would not spend time with her team and would just grab a to go box and go somewhere else to eat somewhere else. And after school she would just disappear and not come back until it was time to go to bed. The only real time WBY and JNPR saw Ruby was in classes and even then, she rarely talked to them. It was starting to hurt a lot, and here WBY was in their dorm discussing their leader's new behavior.
"Don't you girls think it is weird that Ruby is acting this way?" Yang asked her other two teammates as she sat with Blake on her bed.
"Of course I do! I think it is extremely disconcerting that she barely spends anytime with us and acts like we aren't even there when we are in class." Replied Blake.
"Maybe she is finding new things in life, she is still a child after all. Don't get me wrong though, I find it disheartening that she seems to be actively ignoring us and treating us like we are nuisances." Weiss replied as she was brushing her hair.
"I mean it's like she doesn't care about us at all anymore. She used to be so full of life, energetic and was bouncing all over the place. Now the only words we get from her are 'uh-huh' or 'yeah-ok'. It is so unlike her; do we think something is wrong with her? She isn't being bullied or anything is she?" Yang asked as she was worried about her sister.
"No, I do not think so, there are no signs of her being bullied. However, she has become very distant towards us and even cold, which I did not think Ruby was capable of." Weiss thought as she looked back on Ruby's behavior.
"Could it be related to her combat skills improving? I mean we saw what Ruby did to Pyrrha…" Blake shuddered as she remembered how Ruby beat Pyrrha without being hit.
"Maybe but I am glad that Ruby is trying to improve her techniques." Weiss said as she was happy her partner was finally taking things seriously.
"Do you guys think…it's because of us? Have we done something to upset Ruby?" Yang asked as she looked down, her face filled with concern.
"Come now Yang, I highly doubt that I mean we haven't done anything to upset Ruby." Weiss replied as she denied what Yang was insinuating.
"Now that I think about it, we haven't been spending a lot of time with her. We have been leaving her behind just to get time to ourselves. Can you guys remember the last time we hung out with her or even as a team?" Blake said, her ears flattened showing her concern.
"Oh come on Blake! You know we can't bring Ruby to those clubs or those parties, she is too young!" Yang exclaimed.
"I know but it doesn't change the fact that it was mean of us to simply leave her behind. I mean guys we have been outright ignoring her left and right. Maybe she took a page out of our book and started to ignore us as well." Blake said sadly.
"You know I hate to admit it, but I think that may be the case." Weiss said as she lowered her head.
"Sigh…So how are we going to fix this? We can't have Ruby hating us forever." Yang said desperately.
"Oh I know! That carnival is in Vale starting tomorrow isn't it? Let's invite Ruby to go with us and while we hang out, we can get her to tell us what's wrong." Blake said happily.
"Great idea Blake! I will call her right now!" Yang said excitedly. Just then though Ruby walked through the front door. She was in a black tank top, black yoga pants, and was sipping a water bottle. She was also incredibly sweat.
"Ruby welcome back!" Greeted Yang. "Hey wait a second, where have you been? And why you all sweaty?" Yang asked her sister who just gave her a look.
"Ok let's see Yang, I am wearing gym clothes, sweating and have a towel wrapped around my neck. Where do you think I have been?" Ruby asked as she raised her eyebrow.
"Wait you were at the gym?" Blake asked confused.
"Ding-ding-ding!" Ruby exclaimed sarcastically.
"Why were you at the gym?" Weiss asked.
"To bake cookies, no I was there to workout like everyone else on the planet who goes to the gym." Ruby said as she looked at Weiss like she was an idiot.
"Ruby, you don't go to the gym though. Like yeah you train a lot but you never work out." Said Yang.
"So what if I did? What does it matter to you?" Ruby asked while frowning.
"How long have you been going to the gym then?" Blake asked curiously.
"I don't know a few months?" Ruby said as she headed to her drawers to grab some her pajamas and then head to the shower. Her team winced at that answer though, had they really neglected Ruby for that long that they didn't know her activities? What else could she have been doing?
"Hey Ruby wait a second." Yang said.
"What?" Ruby said not even looking at Yang, as she got her pajamas from the drawer.
"There is this new carnival that opens up tomorrow in Vale! It has been a while since we hung out as a team, so let's go there tomorrow!" Yang told her sister with a smile.
Ruby just rolled her eyes at the invitation. 'Oh yeah, NOW you want me to hang out with you. After weeks of ignoring me? Yeah not a chance in hell.' Ruby thought sourly as she turned back to her team. "Go on without me."
"W-what?! But Ruby tomorrow is Friday, the start of the weekend! And you love carnivals!" Yang was shocked at what just came out of Ruby's mouth.
"I am going to be studying this weekend, Professor Goodwitch's test is coming up and I have to be ready for it." Ruby said as she tried to make her way to the shower, but Weiss interjected.
"Ruby, the test is on Thursday next week." Weiss said.
"I am aware Weiss I have the calendar." Ruby said with a roll of her eyes.
"Look Ruby I want to do well on the test too, but there is nothing wrong with relaxing a little and having some fun." Weiss said as she was growing more concerned with Ruby's new attitude and behavior.
"I'm sorry aren't you the one who always bitches at me concerning my studies. Aren't you the one who says that my grades are abysmal? Are you not the one who keeps reminding me constantly, and by constantly yes I do mean on a daily basis, that as the leader I can't have bad grades?" Ruby asked venomously which made Weiss step back in shock.
"Now hold on a second Ruby, look I might be a tad harsh on you sometimes but it's only because I know you can be better." Weiss said as she tried to get over the venom that Ruby had just spit at her.
"Ok Weiss you want me to study better and now you want me to slack off, you are going to have to pick one." Ruby said.
"Look Ruby, Weiss does not mean it like that. All she is saying that taking a day's break from studying won't affect your grades. Besides, it could be fun to spend some quality time with your team." Blake interrupted as she tried to gain control of the situation.
"Oh, I'm supposed to take this from the anti-social member of Team RWBY?" Ruby asked with a raise of her eyebrow.
"I-I am NOT anti-social, I just value my personal time and space!" Blake yelled in denial.
"Oh what a load of crap, Blake trying to get you to hang out is like fighting a dragon with a yo-yo. Ever since we met you have not wanted to be disturbed from your reading and prefer to be by yourself." Ruby said.
"Yeah she's got you there kitten." Yang laughed as Blake mumbled in denial.
"Still Ruby it's the weekend! If not tomorrow what about Saturday or Sunday?" Yang asked.
"Look I have plans of my own! You girls do whatever you want to do." Ruby said as she tried to go into the bathroom but was stopped by Yang.
"Ruby I will admit we haven't been spending time together and all but it is the weekend! We should go out and have some fun!" Yang said trying to get her sister to change her mind.
"You don't need me to have fun, you are doing fine on your own." Ruby said trying to get Yang to drop the matter.
"What?! What is that supposed to mean?! And what plans do you have that are more important than spending time with us, with me?!" Yang said as she looked hurt.
"My plans are MY business, so mind yours! God knows you three have time to yourself, so let me have mine. End of discussion!" Ruby said as she stomped to the bathroom to get in the shower. The WBY looked sad and hurt.
"Well…THAT went well." Weiss said sarcastically as she tried to get over the venom that came with Ruby's new attitude. Yang's bangs covered her face as she looked down sadly.
"What's happened to my little sister? Why is she acting this way? What did we do wrong? Hell, what did I do wrong?" As she asked Blake who returned her sad look.
"I don't know Blake, but I can't help but feel that…we were the cause." Blake said, who does not know how right she is. How were they going to get Ruby back on their side?
