-FLASHBACK-
Lucius' POV
Lucius and Theo charged the beach as they recovered from the destroyed landing craft. Fighting their way toward the nearest bomb crater, bullets whizzing past and bombs blowing up all around them. Bodies littering the sands with rivers of blood flowing back into the waters. Lucius panted heavily as he and the others ran to cover, eventually finding a big enough hole for them to take cover in. Some time later they made it to the trees and began their way to destroy the bunker that was cutting down their comrades. With smoke and fire filling the air Lucius made his gallant advance toward the enemy, with Theo and a small group of marines also making their way in support.
With bullets whistling past and shells booming beside, Lucius though now wounded stood to the challenge and took on the tank that had rolled past him. The ringing in his ear was piercing his mind and everything steadily turned to black as he was finally drawn out of his thoughts.
LUCIUS POV - Sometime later
Lucius had finally stirred, the ringing in his ears was back to remind him that he was, albeit very faintly, that he was still alive. He took a few slow breaths and eventually the ringing subsided enough that he could hear a faint yet steady beeping sound originating beside him. His eyelids were heavy and he struggled to open them, but after summoning what strength he could, the light of the world began to shine through. It became apparent that he was in some sort of hospital, his eyes darted around taking in all the visual information that they could. He noted the familiar colour scheme of a hospital ward and the smell of somewhere that was regularly cleaned. The more that time passed, the more that his body and mind were beginning to wake up, he could feel some strength return to his limbs as he moved his head ever so slowly to look around even more. He noted a blurred window to his left, and beyond it what could be the interior of the hospital, he could make out very blurred shapes of people walking past, from the tall to the short, the broad and the slender, there was a variety of people walking past his room. Looking ahead and to his right he could see health posters on the walls, giving advice on how to quit smoking, and the negative affects of drinking, and other medical information posters. There was one such poster that caught his eye, it was detailing something about fur pigmentation, and had what appeared to be some sort of animal showcasing the poster, some sort of large cat he thought. Perhaps someone made a mistake and left a veterinary poster without realising.
Lucius looked to his right and saw a large clear window, he could see the outside world, a bright clear blue sky and some city that he had never seen before, which was no surprise to him as he hadn't exactly seen every city in Europe. The bright light that shone into his room was too much for his eyes to bare for the moment and so he looked away and back toward the other window. He could hear the approach of voices and footsteps coming toward his room, so Lucius quickly shifted further back and managed to sit up. He awaited with baited breath for the door to open. He needed to know how the landings went, given that he was still alive was a positive sign, even more so that the voices he could hear were in English, even better he thought. There was a pause, he could see a small group outside his door but could not make out any details, he waited and listened carefully.
"Chief, I think its best that me and Nick go in first, just to ease him in to this" A voice sounded beyond the door, feminine in origin. "Very well Hopps, don't take too long. I've got the mayor crawling all over me on this. I want only good news" a more gruff and assertive reply came through. Before long the door slowly opened and two... animals walked through, both on their back legs and wearing police uniforms. Lucius' heart monitor began to audibly quicken, which prompted the rabbit and fox to raise their arms slightly as if trying to convey that they meant no harm. "Easy there pal, don't worry, we're only here to talk to you" the fox spoke first as both of them slowly edged their way further into the room, the door behind them silently closing.
Lucius tried to regain his composure, he could not wrap his head around what he was seeing. How can it be what he is seeing. This has got to be some level of Dante's inferno, Lucius thought as he began to steady himself. The rabbit and fox now moved to the side of his bed, the smaller of them, the rabbit had jumped up on the edge of his bed while the fox stood just beside. He noted on their uniforms their names, the fox had "Wilde" and the rabbit "Hopps", their names he guessed. "What's going on? Someone tell me what the hell is happening" Lucius demanded as he dead stared at the both of them. The rabbit spoke first "It's okay, your safe, your in a hospital. Specifically Zootopia General Hospital" she spoke with an air of calm and assurance, which helped calm Lucius' mind somewhat as he listened to every word "My name's officer Hopps, but you can call me Judy" She smiled as she extended her... paw?
Lucius was hesitant for a moment "It's okay, we don't bite" she chuckled. With some reluctance he reached out his hand and gently shook it, it was then that the fox spoke up "and I'm Nick Wilde, ZPD's best" the fox chuckled, which got a small huff from the rabbit. The fox also reached out his paw, and the human in kind gently shook it, but did not say anything. "Can you tell me your name?" Judy asked as she took out a notebook and pen in the shape of a carrot. Lucius again was hesitant to speak to these... creatures. "Lucius... Lucius Felix" he softly replied, his mind now running a thousand times faster. Quickly had Judy wrote his name down did she ask another question "Where are you from?" He looked at the rabbit and then to the fox before speaking "Europa" he gave a vague answer, but which neither questioned and which after another question was asked "Pardon me, this may seem sensitive but, what exactly are you? We've looked through every database we have and can find no records of your kind ever existing" Judy asked, her curiosity now blindingly obvious. It took Lucius a moment to process the words he heard 'Nothing on any database?' that had to be a mistake, shouldn't it?
Lucius took a deep breath, his gaze left the two officers and wondered over to himself, he looked down and saw fresh bandages across his chest, briefly a memory appeared, he remembered being shot, and how he laid in the tall grass as the cool breeze blew over him. He remembered his friend Theo, and how his body lay still on the ground, silent, and unmoving. He returned his gaze toward the two mammals, his expression strewn with grief and sorrow "I'll tell you how it all began. We we're on an island..."Lucius then begins to retell his story, from the moment he arrived at Heligoland, to the landings of Estonia, and from his and his friends last valiant charge.
Both Judy and Nick were stunned into silence at the detail of what Lucius had gone through, Judy had almost shed a tear but quickly steeled herself in-front of Nick. "Okay, i think we've got what we need. Do you have any questions?" Judy asked as she put away her notepad and pen. "I..." Lucius was about to speak but could not bring himself to say anything, he merely shook his head in silence. Sensing the solemn mood Nick tried to cheer the mood "Hey, don't stress, you wont be long getting out of here. We'll even show you around the city if you'd like" the fox smiled. Lucius nodded lightly with a faint smile, his thoughts now returning to home for a brief moment, all before being disturbed by the two officers leaving the room and sound of the door gently closing.
A minute later the door opened again and another mammal walked in, this one being a tall Jaguar in a white overcoat. "Hello" the jaguar said softly in a feminine tone as she gently closed the door. Lucius wearily looked around the room until he saw that it was dark outside. 'Did I fall asleep' he thought to himself as he tried recounting the last few moments, but could not remember drifting off. "My names nurse Jasmin. I'm your attending" she spoke softly as she grabbed a medical chart at the end of the bed and began reading through the notes "How long have I been here?" Lucius asked as his confusion grew. The faint ringing in his ear making things worse for him. The nurse, noting the concern in the human's voice placed the chart back down and walked beside his bed and sat on a nearby chair "You've been here for two weeks. Do you... remember coming here?" she asked, looking closely at the human. Lucius pondered the question, running every moment that he could through his mind but unable to remember ever getting to this hospital "No. I cant remember anything, besides before coming here" he replied. "How long since those officers came here?". The nurse looked at her watch tucked underneath her sleeve "About, 3 hours ago. Why". Lucius again tried to remember anything right after those two officers left, but nothing came to him "It's just that... I can't remember falling asleep after they left".
Jasmin lightly smiled before standing "Well, seeing as that your awake, which is a first since I've attended you. I need to check how your wounds are" She slowly came closer and lightly pulled the bedsheet off of Lucius' chest and exposing the bandages underneath, she leaned in and lightly undid the wrapping until his entire chest was exposed. Only square medical patches were left on his chest, covering the exact location of where he was shot. She leaned in and examined them intently while gently peeling them off, exposing the stitching underneath. The air around them was close as she examined Lucius, and an eerie quiet pierced the room. "Lucius..." he softly spoke. Jasmin turned her attention back to the human with a puzzled look "My name, is Lucius". Jasmin softly smiled "That's a lovely name" she said while looking into his eyes for only the briefest of moments before returning to checking the state of his recovery.
Jasmin checked for a couple of minutes and at the end of it was satisfied that all was well. She quickly got out some fresh bandages and applied them neatly over the healing wounds "There, that should do nicely" she said as she finished up, quickly jotting down a few things in the medical chart. It was then that Lucius piped up "So, how long is it until I can leave? What am I going to do when I leave?" he asked softly, not knowing what kind of world waits for him outside.
"Well given how well your healing I think that you could be discharged maybe in a day or two" she said, putting the chart away. "As for what you'll do. you can do anything, its Zootopia after all. You can do anything. But if you it means anything I can help you" she offered, which piqued Lucius' interest slightly "I live in the city, maybe when you've been discharged I can show you around that place, get you to meet some people and places" she smiled as she offered her help to Zootopia's new addition.
Lucius thought for awhile, the cogs in his battered head turning "I would like that" a smile briefly broke through. The thought of a stranger willingly showing him around the city felt strange to him, he was thankful no doubt about it, but it felt oddly strange. He didn't ponder the thought for long though before he could hear the voice of the nurse drag him away from his thoughts. "I'd better get going on my rounds" she said, almost sorry to leave, but with an understanding nod from Lucius she left the room.
Again, Lucius was left with his thoughts, the ringing in his ear was still there, but very faintly. He looked out the window again to see the dark sky and brightly lit city and decided that he needed to sleep. As he closed his eyes and all other things faded to silence, he could hear the faint sounds of the night life of Zootopia, the occasional passing cars, the distant music from clubs and bars, a plane flying overhead, some distant sirens. Everything one would expect from a city in the night. With that, Lucius' mind drifted into slumber and with the white noise of the city being his lullaby.
-5 hours later-
Lucius awoke, his eyes quickly adjusting to the bright light that was the new dawn piercing his room. The sound of the hospital became more lively at this point, and so to did the city. Quickly flipping the bed sheets off of him he was glad to find that he at least had some hospital bottoms on to cover him up, he swung his legs over the end of the bed and seethed slightly in pain, only now remembering that he was shot in his leg, but having spent two weeks in the hospital it had healed enough for him to just be able to stand on it without immediately collapsing.
Limping over to the window Lucius could finally see the where he was in the city, and from what he could tell it was very busy. But from a distance away from the hospital he could see mammals of all kinds going about their business, some of them dressed in suits, others in casual and then others in construction attire. Lucius spotted some ground works not too far away, looked like they were doing work to some piping outside some building, a café by the looks of it. He gazed around for a few more minutes before limping his way over to the bathroom door which was in the corner of the room. Entering, he saw a large mirror over the sink and looked into his reflection. His facial hair had grown to just more than a stubble, his hair just that little bit longer, definitely needed a haircut. There were some light cuts about his face, but were already nearly healed leaving only the faintest of scars. Slowly he undid the bandages from his chest to reveal more cuts and scars, and most notably the two gunshot wounds, one was just under his right rib while the other was just off centre of the middle of his chest. 'damn close' he thought. He continued to check over himself for some time, ensuring that there were no other injuries that he should be worried about.
-Judy & Nick POV-
They had both entered Lucius' room at the hospital and immediately noticed that he wasn't in the room "Where is he?" Judy asked in a panic. Nick however quick to act, took a quick sniff of the air and using his predatory ability, located the whereabouts of Lucius. Nick pointed to the bathroom door indicating to Judy where Lucius was, which quickly calmed her nerves. So both of them quite leisurely made themselves comfortable, with Judy hopping onto the bed and Nick sitting on a nearby chair next to the bed.
They both waited patiently for Lucius to emerge.
Minutes passed by and soon the bathroom door creaked open and Lucius stepped through, his bandages fully removed his scarred chest was exposed to all. The many wounds throughout the humans many battles littered nearly every part of him, from his most recent bullet wounds, to cuts and slashes, the scars of his battles covered most of his torso. Judy upon having sight of this gasped in horror, her eyes widening and her ears shot straight up. As for Nick, he was stunned into silence, his own eyes fixated on the humans scarred body. "Wha... what... oh my God" Judy uttered, unable to form a proper sentence. Seeing both the shock and horror from both their faces, Lucius went about trying to ease the situation.
"It's not that bad guys honestly, it looks worse than it is" Lucius said candidly, as if brushing the whole off. Grabbing a hospital gown from a nearby hanger, Lucius quickly put it on, but as hospital gowns go it did not fully cover his back and when putting it on, Judy and Nick saw even more scars on his back. Noticing this Lucius chuckled lightly with embarrassment "Sorry, it seems I'm a picture of pain looking as I am" he fixed his gown to cover what he could before looking back to both of the officers that he only met yesterday.
It took them a moment to regain their composure before they could get to the point of why they were here. "Uhm, Lucius. We've just come to tell you that once your all cleared and checked out of hospital, that the mayor and police chief would like a word with you" Nick started, finally regaining himself.
"That's right. The mayor wants to talk to you about something important, it's quite frankly what he calls a 'Golden opportunity'" Judy said, using air quotations to emphasise this golden opportunity that the mayor so keenly mentioned.
Lucius looked to both of them with some intrigue at this supposed talk between the mayor and police chief. He leaned up against the wall next to the bed with his arms crossed as he pondered his next move. A moment later Lucius began to speak "Look. This whole situation to me is like something out of some twisted horror. I cant begin to explain to you the thoughts going through my mind. From one moment I'm in my world fighting a war, to the next moment laying in some hospital bed in some city God knows where with, and forgive me, animals as the sentient and dominant life around" he took a breath and briefly looked out the window and then back to the both of them "I just want you to just take a look at the situation. Look, me a human, some unknown creature in your world. If the roles were reversed I would be more than surprised. I'm amazed that I haven't been dissected or something by now" He finished, finally clearing all that off his chest.
Judy stood up on the bed and walked a little closer to Lucius "I can only imaging what you are going through, Lucius. But when we found you lying in a ditch in a field, all that we thought of was getting you some help. I can guarantee that no one is going to dissect you, I was having a talk with one of the doctors that is part of your case, and he said that he would ask you first, and then only with your permission would perhaps take some bloods and other samples for examination" Judy tried to sooth the humans mind, to which Nick then added "She's right, Lucius. It may not seem easy to get your head around at first, and even I would be pessimistic about the whole thing. But, both me and carrots here can assure you that you will be welcomed here in Zootopia. After all, if a ex con artist can make it into the ranks of the ZPD then I'm sure you can make it anywhere" Nick allowed himself a smile while looking at Judy with a familiar fondness.
-SOME TIME LATER-
The door to the room opened and a familiar face appeared, it was Jasmin from last night. Both Judy and Nick said their hellos and Lucius gave a nod. Jasmin was holding a piece of paper in her paws, she stepped through the door and began to address Lucius first. "Hey. I have good news. Your doctor has agreed to discharge you, he says that your well enough to leave" she passed the note to Lucius "Now, before you leave, I would recommend that you take it easy for the next few days, so no extraneous activity, we don't want to see come back so soon" she chuckled as she gave the good news.
"Wow, that is good. Which means we can take you to see the mayor" Judy jumped in, her ears perked upward. "What about my clothes, and gear, were they with me when I came here?" Lucius asked, only now remembering about clothes, and what he was going to wear.
Jasmin then spoke again "We have your clothes in the patient storage lockers downstairs, we've had them cleaned for you. As for the others bits..." Nick interceded "We've taken them to the station, what with there being a weapon or rather weapons. It's being kept in the vault in our station until further notice"
"Jasmin, could you please grab my clothes for me please, I would appreciate it" Lucius asked kindly. Jasmin happily nodded and promptly left the room, her long tail flicking as she did.
"So, when your all ready Lucius, we'll make our way over to the mayors office. But don't worry, he's not all that bad so don't stress too much" Judy smiled, easing Lucius' nerves somewhat.
Shortly after, Jasmin came back into the room with a brown box with Lucius' belongings. She gently set it down on the end of the bed and opened the top cover revealing its contents. "Here you go, all freshly cleaned and pressed for you, although they still have the bullet holes I'm afraid, but you can get them stitched up in the city" Jasmin kindly informed. Both Judy and Nick were slightly leaning in toward the box to get a peak inside. The first time they saw these items, it was when they discovered Lucius bleeding on the ground at night.
Lucius gently picked one of the pieces of clothing out the box and held it up, it was his Camo shirt, full with insignia and rank slide, as well as the two bullet holes previously mentioned. He placed it to one side on the bed and grabbed another piece of clothing, this one being his trousers, full with pockets and one hole in the right leg. 'Starting to look like a colander' he thought. The next pieces were a pair of black boots, belt, gloves, a very flat and folded dark green beret. But at the bottom of the box was the picture that he kept with him at all times. He took it in hand and held it close to his chest, looking at Jasmin in the eyes "Thank you". The jaguar smiled deeply, her bright golden eyes shimmering.
Lucius collected all his things and made his way back into the bathroom to change, it took only 5 minutes to get everything on and soon the door opened and out he stepped. An imposing figure in his military uniform. From his camo shirt and trousers down to his black high ankle boots. All three of the mammals in the room looked in wonder at he figure they observed, its not often that someone in military fatigues comes waltzing through Zootopia. As they all looked, Lucius caught a brief glimpse of Jasmin smiling before she noticed and turned away, blushing.
"You look good" Judy chirped as she looked over the human, taking in the whole sight of the imposing figure. Nick on the other hand, having seen Jasmin's blushing joked with Lucius "Careful, you'll be turning some impressionable girls heads wearing that" "NICK!" Judy scored, shooting eyes at her partner "What? I'm just saying, Jasmin's loving it". As for Jasmin, her blush went about 10 darker shades of red "Guys" she said embarrassingly.
Lucius chuckled a little at the display before him. He took hold of his beret and placed it through his shoulder boards, his regimental badge showing to the front. He checked himself over once more before finally being satisfied, although he still had the matter on the holes in his clothes, but that would have to wait. "So, the mayor".
"Ah yes, right come on slick, lets get moving and stop embarrassing the nurse" Judy ordered her junior colleague. Nick soon stood up from his chair and straightened out his uniform "Yeah yeah okay".
Lucius walked toward Jasmin, who by this point had finally managed to compose herself. She stood just a little shorter that Lucius, but then again he was wearing his boots. She looked into his dark brown eyes as he came closer. He stopped just in front and reached out with his hand to shake hers, she accepted, taking hold of his hand with her paw "Thank you for everything. I hope to see you around Jasmin", there eyes locked for the briefest of moments but to both of them felt like hours. Again Jasmin blushed which got another chuckle from Nick and even an "Aww" from Judy.
The three of them soon left the room, Lucius limping a little, but with his uniform back on he found his sense of pride and a newfound energy in every step that he took. Not long later all of them made it to the lobby and out the front door and then soon into a police cruiser, Judy hopping in the drivers seat, which seemed to give Lucius the briefest of worry before he hopped into the back and Nick into the front passenger seat. "Buckle up" Judy said as she started the car "I hope you got good life insurance Luciu- OW" Nick yelped as he caught Judy's elbow to the rib which caught a laugh from Lucius as the cruiser then drove away from the hospital.
Mayors office - central Zootopia
The police cruiser rolled to a stop outside the mayors office, its architecture catching Lucius' eye, its familiar almost Greek design gave a sense of home to the human. After the car was parked they all climbed out and made their way through the large front doors, Lucius quickly pulling down his shirt and fixing his collar as they went through the doors. Despite it being the mayors office it was surprisingly quiet, the only real noise was from Lucius' boots thudding as he walked down the smooth quartz floor.
They reached a reception desk in the middle of the hall which opened up into a large space with staircases flanking the sides up to the second floor.
"We have an appointment with the mayor" Judy said to the receptionist. A grey and white wolf sat behind the desk, its glasses sat near the end of its snout. "Ah yes, Miss Hopps, Mr Wilde and the... yes. They are waiting upstairs" the wold said with its gruff voice.
The trio then made their way up the stairs and toward the mayor's official office. A large brown oak door with a golden plaque pinned to the door "Mayor's office". Yep, this was it. Nick walked over to the door and gave it three firm knocks. Not a second later a deep loud voice shouted "COME IN". The door opened to reveal a spacious and very well decorated office, complete with lounge chairs and two oak desks, and at the centre in front of a large clear window overlooking the city was yet another, oak desk. Sat behind was a large lion, and just beside, a large buffalo in police uniform with four golden stars on its collar, clearly someone of significant rank Lucius thought, must be the police chief that Judy mentioned.
"Ah, welcome, its a pleasure to finally meet you Mr Felix, I'm Mayor Lionheart" the mayor said, standing from behind his desk a smile appearing as he greeted the human. As for the buffalo, he looked Lucius up and down, getting the measure of the man, his focus was more to do with the uniform that he was wearing, he had seen nothing like it before, including all the insignia that was showing. He also caught sight of what appeared to be a single star on epaulets of Lucius' shirt. He would have to ask about that later.
"I would like to introduce police chief of Zootopia, Chief Bogo, ZPD" Bogo simply nodded with a grunt 'charming' Lucius thought to himself "A pleasure, thank you"
The mayor motioned for the three of them to take a seat. Lucius sitting on one, and Nick and Judy both sitting on another, being small as they were compared to the chair. The mayor sat down again and pulled his chair in closer before beginning.
"Now, lets begin..."
