Chapter three:
Papyrus hums softly as he heads to the kitchen to prepare supper. He decides to make spaghetti and grabs the noodles from a cabinet. He puts the noodles into the pot of water throwing the now empty box into the trash. He gathers some of the ingredients for the sauce. He pauses as he feels someone lean against him from behind him. He turns to see that it's Sans.
Sans seems to be in his Undertale persona, and as far as Papyrus can tell this one seems to be the persona for this world. Him in his Undertale persona can in a sense be considered the real Sans. He has his eyes closed as his head rests on Papyruss spine.
"Is something wrong Sans?" Papyrus inquires truly wondering if something is wrong. He also supposes his brother could just need some attention.
"Bro." Sans groans to his brother not looking up. "I'm so tired but I want to be with you. You don't let me sleep on the counters or on the kitchen floor." He did once do both in Undertale form, to which Papyrus told him the counter would get dirty, and he tripped over Sans when he slept on the floor.
"And for very good reasons." Papyrus reminds his brother putting the sauce ingredients down. He shifts carefully making sure Sans won't fall over. He is glad that Sans moves to let his taller brother move around a little easier. He picks up his brother and holds him close. "You had a big day today." He mentions and shifts his grip so he has Sans in one arm, the shorter brother wrapping his arms and legs around him, using the other hand to grab the sauce ingredients. He has to pick up less than before though it's an acceptable price to pay for his brother. He can't help a smile as Sans's grip loosens then begins softly snoring. He does know that some of his personas can truly tire him out, as some personas act more energetic than others. He uses a bone attack to smash the tomatoes. He works on finishing supper with one hand letting Sans rest for a bit. He manages to plate their dinner then shifts to wake up the other. "Sans. Wake up." He gently shakes the other.
Sans groans and shifts then pauses for a moment. He raises his head after the pause pushing away slightly from Papyrus to look to him.
Papyrus offers his brother a smile. "The food for supper is ready." He gently puts his brother down on his feet. He makes sure the other is steady before he lets go of him. He offers the plate of food to Sans.
"Thanks bro." Sans gently takes the plate of food.
"Don't worry about it Sans. Wanna watch Mettaton while we eat?"
"Sure."
Together the two head into the living room settling down on the couch. They have the reruns of the Mettaton show as they eat sitting on the couch. After they finish eating Papyrus places the dishes to the side for now. He puts his arm around his brother who leans against him. He watches the episode of Mettaton that he must admit is his favorite. "I'm so glad they decided to air this one."
"Mhm." Sans hums softly in acknowledgement. He goes quiet after that.
By the end of the episode Papyrus turns realizing Sans is sleeping. "Lazy bones." He mutters affectionately and teasingly despite what time it is. He gently picks him up and goes to put him to bed.
In the ruins a small figure settles into a rather comfy single bed. "Tomorrow. Tomorrow I will get out of here."
Papyrus is woken up by some noises downstairs, like a pan being shifted cleaning for a moment against something else. He reaches over to his phone on his nightstand. He checks the time. It's only thirty minutes before Papyrus himself gets up. "Seems this morning we have one of the energetic personas. Probably Underswap or Swapfell."
Sans has personas that show up a lot more than other personas do. Some of his personas are extremely rare to see him go into. If he is seen in one of those rare personas it's really something to look out for, considering the low chance of seeing it again anytime soon.
Papyrus will admit that Swapfell Sans is one of his least favorites. He can handle laziness just fine. He just finds Swapfell Sans has an attitude that really doesn't sit right with him.
Sans in his Swapfell persona treats him as a lower being, while still showing he cares in private. He is usually seen as angry or serious in the Swapfell persona.
Papyrus knows it's not Sans's fault one of his personas is like this. He can still groan about it though. He pulls the covers over himself deciding to not get up just yet. He wonders if he'll get lucky and Sans does a quick change of personas. He doesn't feel like dealing with Swapfell Sans, though he knows he has no choice in the matter which means he might have to. He supposes that it could be Underswap Sans instead of Swapfell Sans. He isn't sure if it's worth the almost even split of a chance that it could be either one. Though if he did he likes Underswap Sans a lot better, he can stand that persona. He could also encounter a rarer persona that gets up earlier; since Underswap and Swapfell are in the group of the more common personas. He has learned that Sans has commonly seen personas and more rare personas. He's also seen one that only popped up once as far as he knows then just vanished. He didn't have enough time with that persona to find out what to call it, since Sans tends to let that slip as his personas seem to know what the name of the world they're in is called. He does admit that it does help in identifying any persona along with the change of clothes. He finds himself listening for any other noises however the house has fallen quiet. He enjoys it for now as he waits for his alarm to go off.
Then it happens as Sans calls from probably the kitchen, about a minute before Papyruss alarm goes off. "Mutt! Get out of bed you lazy ass!"
Papyrus groans at the confirmation that it is Swapfell this morning. Just his luck. "I'm awake I promise!" He calls back, not feeling like adding the M'lord part that seems to be in Sans's mind what Swapfell Papyrus calls him. He might do it later for his brother as even in parts he hates, he still loves Sans enough that he's willing to do such things for him. He turns off his alarm when it goes off and gets up. He gets ready for the day staying in his preferred clothes called his battle body. He heads to the kitchen finding that Sans has made some great looking French toast.
Sans is in his Swapfell outfit, and he even managed to put on black mascara for the scar.
Papyrus does find it a little fascinating how Sans changes outfits, while his mind switches personas. He supposes that the period between each, uncontrolled, shift in personas Sans's body instinctively prepares his outward appearance to show the persona. He graciously takes the plate that Sans offers him.
The two eat enjoying the well made French toast. Once done they leave the dishes in the sink and Sans turns to Papyrus.
"Was that enough food to last you this morning?" Sans questions in a demanding tone, though Papyrus knows it's a moment of care being shown by Sans. "I don't want you running off to Muffets so soon after starting work. It's slacking off."
"Yes. It was enough. I'll be alright." Papyrus assures Sans who accepts that answer.
They head out to head to work. They pause once at Papyruss sentry station.
"Don't slack off Mutt. I'll punish you if I come back and catch you slacking off. Got it?" Sans warns to which Papyrus just nods his head. He heads off to begin his patrol.
Papyrus heads into his own station and flips down with a sigh. He reminds himself that Sans loves him no matter how his personas treat him. He stays there for a moment then gets up. He heads to check on the puzzles making sure Sans isn't there when he approaches each one. He works until it is time for him to head back to his sentry station. He figures that he might as well be there if Sans is still in his Swapfell persona, since then he won't be accused of trying to skip work. He is in no way in the mood for such a lecture from his brothers Swapfell persona. He makes it back just in time as Sans comes over to check on him. He almost wants to sigh at still seeing the Swapfell look.
"Well at least you're at your station and you are awake." Sans snorts and turns away. "But don't you fucking forget that you are not to slack off! A human could come through. You're of no use to anyone if you slack off while on duty. And you had better remember that. As you know I don't tolerate you fooling around. So keep to my expectations Mutt."
"Yes M'lord." Papyrus tries to keep his voice calm as he begrudgingly says his response.
Sans turns away and heads off once more.
Papyrus rubs his hands on his face. He hopes that Sans changes personas soon. He sits at his station deciding to have a bit of a break. His morning has been a bit much as it usually is with the Swapfell persona. He enjoys the quiet of the surrounding area and closes his eyes. He pushes down his annoyance and frustration for now. He can unleash it when time for training comes. He knows Undyne will understand. He decides to do his own patrol after a little bit. He comes back then sits waiting for Sans. He blinks in confusion when his brother misses the usual time frame of check ins. He knows it means either something is wrong, or that he's changed personas. He decides to go check his brothers station so he heads that way. He arrives and to his delight sees Sans in his Undertale persona napping.
Sans has his arms on the table of the sentry station with his head resting on his arms.
Papyrus leaves him be and goes to Undynes home early to blow off some steam. He has time now since Sans changed personas. He gets there and approaches the dummy outside. He glares at it feeling his magic spark powerfully in his frustration. He lets it out blasting the dummy with bone attacks until he feels a bit better. He pants slightly once the attacks calm down.
"Swapfell huh?"
Papyrus turns to see Undyne standing behind him. He turns away with a nod and hears her chuckle a little. "Not the best persona to be woken up by." He adds as Undyne moves closer to him. He feels her place a hand upon his shoulder.
"We all have a persona of his that we don't like." Undyne assures Papyrus who nods his head. "But I know you especially do your best for him. Even if it's the persona you don't like. And I know that it must mean so much to Sans that you'd do so. Whether or not he is actually able to realize how grateful he is for what you do for him."
Papyrus relaxes a little more than he already has and nods his head. "Yeah. You're right Undyne."
"Now then. Should we start some training?" Undyne suggests with a smile. "To get some more of that pent up frustration out?"
"Okay. But afterwards I gotta go check on Sans. He had one of his lazy personas out when I last checked on him. But since Swapfell made him get up early I will allow him to nap." Papyrus agrees earning a slight chuckle from Undyne.
In the ruins two stand facing each other.
The taller one glances away sadly. "I cannot stop you it seems." Her voice soft with regret and worry. "You truly have the determination to continue forth to find a way out. All I can do is warn you that none of it will be easy. You'll face many challenges. And hope that you'll stay safe my child."
"Don't worry Toriel." The other approaches and hugs Toriel who crouches down. "I'll be careful and do my best to survive out there. I promise."
The two hug for a little longer then pull away.
Toriel moves out of the way allowing the other to reach the door leading out. She watches the other head through the door. She locks it behind the other hoping that everything indeed will be alright. "Good luck. Frisk."
AN:
I know I already have one that is a post as I finish chapters in another fandom but I wanted to add this one because it is one I have been wanting to finish for a long time. I am hoping that this way I will get the motivation I need to get to the end of this story I have planned. This story has been in the works for quite awhile so I am crossing my fingers that it turns out good.
It is all going to be written on my phone so hopefully I catch the autocorrects.
I hope you are enjoying and I will see you in the next chapter!
Kitkat.
