Nightmare

"NO!" you screamed. You tried desperately to run in and stop Thoma getting hurt again. But the more you tried to run, the less progress you seemed to make. All you could do was watch on in horror as your fallen boyfriend took hit after hit.

He looked up at you, bloodied and bruised. He reached out a weak desperate hand . . .

"Y/N, help . . ."

Behind him, the enemy raised their weapon for the finishing blow. Thoma screamed in agony as he was slashed mercilessly again and again.

"THOMA!"

"Y/N?"

You collapsed to your knees, screaming with all the tears as a blackness began to swallow you whole.

"THOMA!"

"Y/N, wake up."

You were so busy wailing after your disappearing dying boyfriend, that you didn't feel the warm hands on you until they squeezed your shoulders and shook them frantically.

"Wake up, wake up, wake up."

Something tapped your cheek. You let out a startled scream. You opened your eyes and gasped for breath. You blinked rapidly as you took in your surroundings. The room wasn't much darker than wherever the hell you were last. And leaning over you, holding onto you was . . . Thoma?

How . . . ?

"Hi . . ." he murmured, cupping your face in his hands. You stared up at him in shock.

It couldn't be.

You just saw him die right in front of you . . .

"You alright?" His voice was so soft . . . You weren't alright at all. Your mind screamed as you tried to stop it from spinning. What was going on?

Why was Thoma wearing white?

Was he actually dead?

Were you dead too?

Your racing heart was threatening to pound out your chest. Your breaths became short and sharp, your eyes flooding with tears. You tried to ask him what was happening, but found yourself screaming when the words wouldn't come.

"Okay, come here. Come here to me."

Before you could process it, Thoma had scooped you up in his arms, pulling you into a tight embrace up on his lap. You spluttered in your sobs. You could barely breathe and were practically paralyzed from fear.

"I- I thought you were-" You coughed and spluttered- your chest was in absolute agony. "I saw you dying-"

"Okay, m'love . . . okay . . ." Thoma cradled your head with one hand. He ran his other one up and down your body.

"You were having a nightmare . . . It was just a dream, okay? It's okay . . . It's over now . . ."

You grabbed onto the crisp white shirt he had on, clinging on like it was your life. You sobbed harder and harder. The more you tried to control your breath, the more you spluttered and sobbed.

"Shhhh . . . I'm here, m'love . . . I'm here." He wrapped his arms tighter around your shaky figure. "You're safe, m'love . . . I'm here . . . I've got you in my arms . . . you're safe . . ."

You could barely see in the dark or through the tears. But you could feel his soft warm hands. One was stroking your temple. The other continued to make soothing strokes up and down your body . . . It helped you allow your body to sink down into his.

But it was still so difficult to breathe. Sitting here in his arms like this after what you had seen . . . it felt too good to be true. Was he really here? Was it really all okay? You shivered and let out a wail, burying your face into his chest.

"Ohhh sweetheart . . ." He squeezed you tighter and dug his nose into your hair. "It's okay . . . I'm here . . . I'll always be here . . . I'll protect you . . . I'll keep you safe . . . I'll always be by your side, okay? I promise."

He planted soft kisses over your head. He continued to stroke you and give you passionate squeezes. The more you felt his touch, the more you started to believe he was really there.

"I love you, Y/N . . . I love you so much . . ."

You spluttered and started to sob harder again. He really was here, and he was so perfect and comforting. It was almost unbearable. You nuzzled your face off his chest, leaving little wet patches on his shirt.

"Shhhh, m'love . . . You lay on my chest right here . . . that's a good girl." He gently nudged your head into the perfect spot, continuing to cradle and caress your temple. As your head sank in, your ear picked up on the gentle heartbeat through his chest. It was slow and rhythmic and calming . . . You tried again to take control of your short shaky breaths with little success.

"Take a few deep breaths with me. Take a deep breath in . . ."

You felt a gentle rise in his chest. You sniffed and took the deep breath in with him. It was first proper breath you had taken since waking up.

"And out . . ."

His chest slowly sank, bringing your head down with it. You felt his warm breath fan over your head. You slowly exhaled with him and sank more into his body.

"Good girl . . ."

Your breath hitched at the praise. There were still some more tears trickling down your cheeks.

"Shhhh . . . One more . . ." Thoma stroked you in a soothing rhythm to match his heavy breathing.

"In . . ."

The two of you sucked a deep breath in together. Your grip on his shirt loosened a little.

"And out . . ."

Your head sank back down with his chest. You were still crying a bit. But you felt slightly more relaxed and a lot warmer. You had actually forgotten how cold you had felt when you'd woken up, and how soft and warm and snuggly his body was.

"I'm sorry for waking you."

"Noooooo, no." Thoma gave you reassuring kisses and squeezes as you began to tremble again. "It's okay, don't worry. I'm here . . . I'll look after you."

His words comforted you, yet upset you at the same time. An image of him injured and helpless still lurked at the back of the mind. You whimpered and clung onto him again.

"I thought you'd died."

"Awww no . . . no . . ." He wrapped his arms around you even tighter as you started to cry again. "I'm here, m'love . . . I'm here. That wasn't real . . . It was just a dream. But it's over now. It's not gonna happen, okay? I promise that will never happen . . ."

You continued to cry it out. He kept you cradled in his arms and scattered loving light kisses over top of your head.

"I really thought-"

"Shhhh . . . I know, m'love. I know. It's over . . . I'm here . . . And I always will be." He rubbed more reassurance into you. "Take another deep breath with me, okay? In . . ."

You sniffed in the big breath through your wet nose, rubbing your hands up his rising chest.

"And out . . ."

You both sank a little as you slowly released the breath through your lips. Thoma began making gentle subtle downward shifts. Eventually, he lay himself down into the bed with you on top of him. You barely budged, lazily fiddling with his shirt.

"That's a good girl . . . yes . . . shhhh . . ." He brushed your cheek with his fingertips, wiping away the last of your tears.

"Shall I play with your hair?"

"Mmm." You had lost so much energy from all the crying, that simply nodding was such an effort.

"Yeah?" He brought a tender hand to your scalp and ran his fingers through your hair. You moaned at his gentle touch.

"You like that?"

You gave another drowsy nod.

"That's good . . ." he whispered. He kissed the top of your head. And then he started to softly hum a soothing lullaby. You blinked heavily, slowly settling into your surroundings. The gentle rise and fall of Thoma's chest . . . How it vibrated as he hummed away . . . His arms wrapped tight around your body . . . His fingers running through your hair . . . The sweet scent of sakura blossom . . . How soft and warm and cuddly his body was. You shifted up a little, planting your ear on his chest. Out of all the sounds, from his humming, to his breathing, to the rustling of hair . . . the sound of his beating heart was your favourite.

"You feel better?"

"Mmm." You nodded more contently, snuggling up to his warmth.

"Good . . . Close your eyes, m'love." Thoma pulled the duvet over your shoulders and tucked it in around you. He hugged you as tight as he could, squeezing more warmth and comfort into you. You allowed your eyes to droop shut. You sniffed away the last of your tears.

"Good girl," he whispered. "Now . . . You relax, sweetheart . . . You relax here in my arms and go back to sleep . . . I'll be here when you wake up. And if you have another nightmare, I'll look after you, okay? I'm here, m'love . . . I'm here . . ."

You moaned contently. You nuzzled your face off his chest. Sometimes your breath hitched. But you were soothed by a gentle "shhhhh" and soft hands stroking your body.

You were finally settling into a deep and restful sleep. As you dozed off, you just managed to mumble "i love you, thoma . . ."

"Awww." You heard a small soft chuckle from him. "I love you too, Y/N."

He planted a goodnight kiss on your head. You settled down in bed together, warm and safe and sound. Just as you yawned and drifted off, you heard your boyfriend whisper,

"sleep well, my love."
