"No ma'am we cannot arrest your husband for having a relationship with another woman. Unless he's doing something illegal. Which he is not. I'm sorry. Have a nice day."
Hanging up the phone, Eddie stretched and sat back in her chair at her desk. Her desk partner Officer Sanchez frowned at her.
"Eddie? What happened to your neck? Did someone hurt you?"
Eddie narrowed her eyes at Sanchez and frowned.
"No. Why?"
Sanchez continued to give Eddie a sympathetic look. Managing to get to her feet, she gingerly walked to the bathroom and entered. Sitting in front of the mirror she looked at herself. She winced as she gently touched the darkening bruises on her neck.
"What the hell?"
Eddie saw her patrol partner Amanda come up to the sink next to her.
"Eddie, are you ok? What happened? Did someone hurt you?"
Shaking her head no, she looked Amanda in the eye.
"No. These weren't there this morning. Why is everyone assuming that someone hurt me?"
Eddie gripped the sink for a moment and closed her eyes. She felt Amanda hovering behind her.
"Eddie?"
Opening her eyes, she looked at Amanda's reflection behind her in the mirror.
"I'm ok Amanda. The baby just hooked their foot up under my rib cage and kicked me. I'm ok. I promise."
Amanda continued to look at Eddie with concerned eyes.
"In any case, you should get that looked at."
Eddie turned carefully on her heel and exited the restroom. She could feel many sets of concerned eyes on her and she couldn't help but become defensive.
"No one hurt me ok?"
Walking slowly over to her chair in front of her desk, she lowered herself into it and tried not to wince again.
"Uw. Come on joints, give me a little break. I've been drinking plenty of water."
Eddie was about to answer her ringing phone when she heard Sargent Renzulli's voice from a few feet behind her.
"Janko. Sanchez can cover the phones for a bit. Go with the EMT's to the break room so they can check you out. Go."
Sighing in slight defeat she got to her feet.
"Yes sir."
Slowly waddling behind the EMT's the three of them entered the break room. One closed the door for some privacy.
"Please have a seat, Officer Janko."
Eddie looked at the EMT gesturing towards the stretcher.
"I'm ok. Can I just sit in the chair right here?"
The EMT gestured towards the stretcher again.
"This is just a precaution. It's probably more comfortable than the chair right here."
Eddie humored the man and climbed up onto the stretcher with his help. Leaning her head back up against the semi-upright stretcher she listened to the EMT to the right start asking her questions.
"Can you tell me what happened here? How did you get these?"
Eddie felt her annoyance bubbling up to the surface, but she took a deep breath to calm herself. She watched as the EMT to the left was placing a blood pressure cuff around her upper arm and taking a reading.
"145/99."
The EMT to the left became more concerned.
"Your blood pressure's a little high. Have you been stressed lately? Your sargent filled us in on your duties while riding the desk."
Eddie swallowed and gave an answer.
"Desk duty can be frustrating but definitely not stressful. My husband has a more stressful job right now than I do. At least I'm not out on the streets catching bad guys. I'm safe in this house. My husband is an Obstetrician at Saint Victors."
The EMT that was taking the blood pressure cuff off Eddie's left arm cocked his head and looked at her curiously.
"What's his name?"
Eddie sighed and winced again; she was becoming uncomfortable the way she was sitting.
"Doctor Jamie Reagan."
The EMT nodded and cleared his throat, looking at Eddie with a sympathetic expression.
"Eddie? Is it ok if I call you Eddie? Would it be ok if we checked on your baby?"
Eddie got wide eyes and watched as the EMT took his stethoscope and placed it over her growing baby belly, listening for the baby's heartbeat and movements. She stayed quiet and watched as the EMT move the stethoscope around a bit and then took it away, placing it behind his neck.
"Your baby is healthy. Good, strong heartbeat, and good movement. The only thing concerning is the bruising around your neck. How'd you get those?"
Eddie became slightly annoyed once more but took a breath and let it out.
"I don't know. They just showed up about 20 minutes ago. They aren't as bad as the one's on my arms though. Those hurt worse."
Eddie carefully rolled her sleeves back on both of her arms and showed the EMT's.
"Hmm. When did you notice these?"
Eddie was about to answer when she hunched over slightly and hissed.
"Ouch."
Pulling her shirt up just slightly, she saw a large bruise on her belly. The pain was strange. It wasn't a dull ache, and it wasn't sharp. It was more of a burning feeling if one could describe it that way. The EMT on the left helped put her shirt down and put a blanket over her, the one on the right put the safety belts on her and started rolling out of the break room. Eddie shut her eyes as she was wheeled through the bullpen towards the front doors to the precinct. She felt lots of eyes on her, but she kept her eyes shut.
She didn't want to see the looks of pity on their faces. She wasn't some scared little girl. She let out a groan as the EMT's hit a bump in the sidewalk on their way to the ambulance. Once she was loaded into the ambulance, she opened up her eyes and felt tears coming to her eyes.
"What's going on? Is my baby ok? Why does it hurt so bad?"
The EMT who took her blood pressure looked at her seriously, but had sympathy in his eyes.
"I'm just going to take a quick look with this ultrasound here. This'll give us a little better picture of what's going on. Damn it. Looks like you've got a strange shaped blood vessel in your womb that has a clot. Marvin. Step on it! We need to get her to Saint Victor's! NOW!"
Everything was a whirlwind after that. A mix of sirens and the EMT trying to keep her focused and alert on him. She blinked as they rushed her through the emergency room doors. Doctor Carollson was there to meet her, Jamie trailing next to her.
"Eddie! Oh my god. What happened?"
Eddie's head felt fogged in. She was struggling to concentrate.
"Blood clot in my womb…"
She could barely see his face as she watched him place a kiss to her belly. She continued watching him through fuzzy vision.
"Jenna, I want to scrub in. We can get rid of this clot together."
Eddie was struggling for breath, and she felt Jamie's hand in her hair. She heard Doctor Carollson's voice.
"Jamie you're too close to this. You can watch from the observation lounge upstairs. We need to get her into surgery now. If we don't the baby's lungs are going to be compromised if we wait any longer. This clot could be blocking the placental blood flow."
Eddie was losing her battle to stay conscious. She still felt Jamie's hand running through her hair.
"Hold on babe. You hold on. I'll be here when you wake up."
Jamie paced the observation lounge above the operating room, and every few minutes he'd press the intercom button to talk to Doctor Carollson.
"How's it going in there Jenna?"
Doctor Carollson did her best to not sound annoyed.
"Everything is holding steady Jamie. Just like you asked two minutes ago. Her blood pressure leveled out. I'm almost to the clot."
Jamie rubbed a hand over his mouth and shook his head. He was always the patient one. He stopped pacing when he heard a machine begin to beep rapidly. Pressing the intercom button, Jamie had concern in his voice.
"What happened?"
Doctor Carollson continued her work and responded in a calm and collected voice.
"She's ok Jamie. Eddie's ok. The finger prob monitoring her oxygen saturation just slipped off her index finger. Mara took care of it."
Jamie let out a relieved breath and pressed his head against the glass of the observation lounge.
"Thank god."
Jamie was practically glued to Eddie's side in her recovery room. He kept running ha hand through her hand and kissing her forehead.
"You gave me quite a scare there for a minute babe. We should've known that strange shaped blood vessel in your womb was going to cause trouble. But the good thing is we caught the clot in time. Doctor Carollson cleared it out. You're as good as new. The baby didn't suffer any side effects because of it. I noticed people make some assumptions about you and I. Doctor Carollson is giving you some iv iron.
You were bruising because your anemic. You know I would never hurt you. But I'm sure people saw you and assumed someone was hurting you. I always make sure you and our babies are both taken care of. Always. Cora is with Nicky. She said she'd watch her for the night. Plus, Cora loves being with her cousin. They always have such a blast together. This is a small bump in the road babe. We're stronger together. Never forget that babe."
