Chapter 49 - Bella
It was two days later when Jared and I had invited his parents and Charlie over to the house for dinner and we'd gotten Renee and Phil to agree to a facetime. I was in the middle of cooking when my phone rang. I quickly answered it without looking at the caller ID and put it on speaker. "Hello?" I said.
"Hey you okay?" Leah asked me.
"Yeah. Just in the middle of cooking for this dinner tonight. You okay?" I asked her as I moved about the kitchen.
"Yeah, just wanted to talk to you about some stuff." She said.
"Can we do it tomorrow? I'm just really stressed about tonight." I told her.
"Absolutely. Breakfast?" She asked.
"Sure."
A little bit later, I was putting the final touches on dinner when I heard a knock at the front door. I knew that Jared would grab it, cause he'd been in the living room. It wasn't long after that I heard my dad's voice. "Hey kiddo." He said walking into the kitchen.
"Hey dad." I said greeting him.
"Smells good in here Bells." Charlie said, walking over to hug me.
"Thanks Dad. Jared's parents should be here any moment. I think that there might be some beer in the fridge. Not sure though. Pregnancy brain." I told him, laughing.
"It's alright. I brought a six pack." Charlie said and I nodded. I watched as Charlie grabbed one of his beers and put the rest in the fridge.
I was so nervous and I really wanted this night to go well. I knew that Charlie was happy for us but I wasn't sure what Jared's parents or Renee would think. I still didn't know Jared's parents well and Renee…Well Renee was a wild card.
I must have stuck in my thoughts because I hadn't even noticed that Jared's parents had arrived until his mom touched my arm. "Oh Ellen. I'm so sorry. I must have been stuck in my thoughts." I apologized.
"It's alright dear. The guys were all talking in the living room so I thought I'd come see if you needed any help." She said.
I shook my head. "No I think I've about got it. I meant to tell you last time you were here, I absolutely love this kitchen." I told her as I started fixing drink and sitting them on the table.
"Oh thank you. When Jared was little, we used to entertain some and the bigger kitchen help. I'm glad to see someone appreciates it other than me." Ellen said.
"Oh I definitely do. We tend to help entertain our friends. There's only two of us in the group that can actually cook so we tend to alternate who hosts." I told her without going into too much detail.
"That sounds nice. I remember when Nathan and I used to do things like that." Ellen said.
It was about five minutes later that we were all sitting down at the table. "I want to say thanks for coming to have dinner with us tonight. Dad joins quite frequently on the weekends and sometimes we go up to Forks during the week to have dinner with him…but I feel like we don't see you guys enough." I said, as we started passing the food around and making plates.
"I was thinking the same thing. I told Nathan the other day that I had enjoyed our visit last time and I wanted to mention to you and Jared about maybe coming to spend a weekend up in Seattle with us." Ellen said.
"Really?" I asked.
She nodded. "Of course. Nathan and I would really like to get to know you better." She said.
"I think it sounds like a great idea." Jared said. "I mean we couldn't do it anytime soon. Bella and I haven't been back from our camping trip very long so I don't think I could take the time off work. But we'll work it out." Jared told his mother.
"Wonderful." Ellen said as she took a bite.
Dinner had been wonderful. Definitely better than the last time that Jared's parents had been here. During dessert, Jared set up the laptop so that we could facetime with Renee and Phil. While he was setting it up, Ellen looked curious. "Jared and I have some news to share and my mom and step-dad couldn't be here so we thought it would be nice to facetime with them so that their included." I told her and she nodded.
It didn't take long before Renee and Phil's faces appeared on the screen. "Oh! There's a group." Renee said and I rolled my eyes.
"Yes mom. These are Jared's parents, Ellen and Nathan." I told Renee. "This is my mom and step-dad, Renee and Phil." I told Jared's parents.
They seemed to greet each other. "Look, we know that is isn't exactly conventional but we wanted everyone to feel included so this was the best that we could do on short notice. Bella and I have some news." Jared said, looking at me and I smiled at him. "I proposed to Bella and she said yes." Jared told them.
"Oh that's wonderful." Ellen said.
Renee was quiet.
"There's more." I said. I looked directly at Renee, wanting to see her reaction when I said it. "I'm pregnant. Jared and I are going to be parents."
Renee's face said it all. She was disappointed. "Congratulations to you both." Nathan said.
"Bella…" Renee trailed off, clearly trying to figure out how to say what she wanted to say. "I don't approve. I think that you're making a mistake." She said.
"It's not a mistake mom. This is what I want. I love Jared. I love my life here." I told her.
"I just think that when you get older you might wish that things had turned out differently." Renee said.
"You mean like you? Is that it? You think I was a mistake." I said.
"Of course not!" Renee said.
I shook my head and walked out of the room. I walked through the kitchen to the living room and straight out to the front porch. I leaned against the railing. I couldn't believe my mother. She was unbelievable.
It wasn't long before I felt warm arms wrap around my waist. Jared kissed his mark on my neck. "I'm sorry babe." He said.
I shook my head. "It's not your fault, Jare. I had a feeling that this was going to happen. She's never made it a secret that she wished that she hadn't gotten pregnant with me so young. Hence why she and Charlie got divorced when I was so little. But I never thought that she'd stoop so low as to try and guilt trip me into feeling bad about my life. Our life. I love our life Jared." I told him.
"I know babe. I never once thought that you didn't. Charlie and my Mom are in there ripping into her for making you feel bad." Jared told me. The only thing I could do was nod. I hated that Renee had made me feel like this. The worst part of all was that I felt like I couldn't even enjoy the happiness of it because of Renee.
