Alec couldn't believe his eyes. For several reasons.
1) It had been so many years that he had forgotten just how magnificent those eyes were.
2) He hadn't ever expected to see them again.
3) He heard that the boy had gotten sick, just as his mother had. He heard that he was not doing well and that he was knocking on death's door. The boy had posted a Facebook page the last time he went into hospital.
But there he was. Magnus Bane.
"Oh my God!" Alec cried, throwing his arms around his old friend.
Magnus laughed and hugged him back just as tight.
"Alexander, oh my God, you're really here."
"I'm really here? What about you? Are you real?" Alec gasped, stepping back to look at his friend.
He was clad in skinny blue jeans, a white tank top and a studded black jacket. His hair was messy, with rainbow dyed tips. His eyes were ringed in eyeliner. Alec held his shoulders as he looked him up and down. He felt his cheeks flush and cleared his throat.
"I can't believe you're really here," Alec said.
He pulled Magnus in for another hug, wrapping his arms tight around Magnus. One of his hands cradled Magnus' neck the other rested on the small of his back.
Magnus smiled and held Alec close, tears welling in his eyes. He stroked Alec's cheek and breathed in his scent. Alec was strong and warm against him and Magnus knew he was blushing.
He was very aware of the dream he had. It was difficult to remember that it wasn't real. For all he knew, Alec wasn't even interested in guys. The thought made Magnus feel slightly ill.
For now though, Magnus was just happy to see his friend again.
"Come meet everyone, I know Jace and Izzy will be so happy to see you again."
Alec smiled and took Magnus' hand in his own, leading him towards his friends.
"Are you alright?"
He asked as they walked and Magnus knew then that Alec knew what had happened to him. He stopped walking.
"I'm good. Really, I'm good. I have medicine that I need to take but I'm alright. Aunt Ayesha wouldn't have agreed to move us back here if I wasn't strong enough."
Alec nodded and laughed a little.
"I suppose. But if you feel at all not well, you tell me, okay?"
Alec held his gaze, his sincerity radiating like a safety blanket. Magnus nodded, already feeling warm and fuzzy at Alec looking out for him.
"I will," said Magnus.
"Promise me," Alec replied.
He raised his eyebrows, waiting for Magnus to reply.
"I promise," he said, biting his lip.
Alec smiled and nodded. Gripping Magnus' hand tighter, he pulled him towards his friends for a beautiful reunion that had Magnus in tears within seconds.
...
There was something special about reuniting with people you once called family. Magnus had been worried that they wouldn't remember him, or things would be awkward. But the Lightwoods were as welcoming and loving as ever.
Magnus felt an instant stab of guilt, however, when they took him back to their home to find only Maryse waiting for them. There was no Robert. Or Max.
Maryse had pulled him on close and given him the best hug he'd had in ages. His Aunt Ayesha had kept in contact with Maryse over Facebook and she knew all about Magnus' struggles. Magnus, it seemed, had been sheltered from the truth of the Lightwood's struggles.
There was an accident. Robert and Max were in the car. They got hit. Robert made it out. Max did not.
It was several years ago but the family never recovered. Time made it easier but there was a missing piece. There were pictures of the kind, sweet boy all over the house though. Robert, however, had all but erased himself from their lives. He left, Maryse and him divorce. Alec and the others hadn't seen him in years.
In Magnus' dream, Robert had moved away with Max. He wondered if maybe in the moment of his brief death, Magnus had glimpsed reality and it had slipped into his subconscious. He had hoped, upon returning, not everything from his dream would actually come to pass.
Maryse had made dinner while the kids were out. She welcomed Magnus to the table with open arms and insisted that he and Ayesha come round the next night. She was surprised at their return, Ayesha had obviously wanted it to be a surprise, same as Magnus. The way the family beamed at him; it was as if no time had passed.
When dinner was over, he headed out but Alec insisted on walking him home.
"You're not going by yourself," he said, pulling on his coat and shoes.
Magnus rolled his eyes.
"I can take care of myself, Alexander."
Alec sighed and nodded. His cheeks had turned a delightful shade of pink.
"I know, but you can't blame me for wanting to make sure you get back safe."
Magnus smiled as Alec walked past him, opening the door. Izzy flew down the hall for one last hug and Jace grinned at him from the stairs. Maryse handed him a box of leftovers and then he was ready to go. Alec held the door open for him and bowed as Magnus walked through, laughing.
The night was calm. A light breeze, not too cold. Stars twinkled above them. Magnus took in deep breaths. His appreciation for the world had sky-rocketed after his recovery. There was nothing quite like breathing it all in. The wonder, the pain, he beauty and the fear. It was everything.
"What you thinking?" Alec asked, bumping their shoulders together.
Magnus smiled and turned to his old friend.
"How beautiful the world is now. I couldn't see it before," he said.
Alec smiled but stayed quiet. He nodded though, joining Magnus in looking up at the stars. Magnus closed his eyes as the breeze ruffled his hair. He couldn't see it, but Alec had turned away form the stars and was instead looking at Magnus.
"Yeah," Alec eventually replied, "neither could I."
