Chapter 3: Making New Memories

Barney and Sally then noticed Kami's sad face as she stopped marching. "Now you don't look like an ant anymore." Sally said.

"But I still feel like an ant. The little ant at the end of the line." Kami said sadly.

"Oh, what's wrong, Kami?" Barney asked.

"It seems I'm always the last in line, just because I'm little." Kami explained.

"I know how you feel. I always feel like that myself because I'm one of the youngest of my friends. Why can't I have a growth spurt now?!" Sally pouted.

"But Kami, you're growing everyday. You won't always be the last in line." Barney promised.

"I know. But today, I think I'll just play by myself." Kami said, sadly walking into the Caboose.

"Poor Kami. We only just met her, and I can't help but feel sorry for her. I really wish we could help her." Sally said, sadly walking away as Charlie Brown, Heather, and Scott approached Barney.

"Kami's feeling sad, isn't she?" Charlie Brown wondered.

"Yes she is, Charlie." Barney sighed.

"Then I think we should do something to cheer her up!" Heather declared, hands on her hips.

"Whoa!" Scott gawked.

"She's almost always this confident." Charlie Brown smiled "And I love her for it"

"Guys! We have to focus! What can we do to cheer Kami up?" Sally reminded.

"Well, ideas come from in here..." Barney tapped Sally on the head, making her giggle. "But sometimes, it helps to have a special place to sit and think."

"Like...?" Sally began.

Barney shrugged.

"Let's find ourselves a special place." Heather encouraged as they walked around.

"Hmmm...where should our special place be?" Scott asked.

"Sally and Heather are full of bright ideas, one of them will get a eureka moment." Charlie Brown replied.

"Faster! Faster! EVEN FASTER!" declared Peppermint Patty as Lucy spun her and Marcie on the spinning bench.

"IS THIS FAST ENOUGH?" Lucy asked, laughing

"EVEN FASTER, LUCILLE!"

"Hmmmmm..." Heather said, smirking a little.

"I wonder..." Sally added, also with a smirk.

"STOP THE BENCH!" the two girls declared in unison as Lucy stopped the spinning bench out of surprise.

"And WHY is that?" Lucy demanded.

"We want a turn too!" Sally explained. "Maybe even sit and ponder a little."

"Climb on in!" Peppermint Patty encouraged.

Heather and Sally smiled and rushed onto the empty seat on the bench.

"Wow, you girls found a place to sit and think!" Barney chuckled.

"An idea bench!" Scott declared.

Sally thought about it. "Idea Bench...Idea Bench...I LIKE IT!"

"Me too!" Heather said as Lucy went back to spinning the bench around.

"Barney, a little help, please?"

"Certainly." Barney replied, helping Lucy push it.

Sally:

I'd like to think of something

I'd never thought before.

If it doesn't happen right away,

I'll think a little more.

I'll sit a little while

Imagine what could be.

And a new idea might come to me.

"Nice song, Sally." Scott smiled.

"Catchy, Little Sister!" Charlie Brown added.

Sally beamed. "Thank you! I made it up, two years ago!"

Barney, Sally and Heather:

I'd like to think of something new,

Something fun to do.

Maybe solve a problem

Or fix a thing or two.

If I sit a little while I'm sure I'll see.

A new idea will come to me.

Heather then glanced at the Caboose and her eyes sparkled. "I got an idea!" Heather squealed with delight.

"That's the spirit, Heather!" Barney smiled.

"Come on! Let's go tell the others!" Heather smiled as she, Charlie Brown, and Barney gathered the others. "Everyone, Kami is being sad about being the last in line, so I came up with an idea that'll cheer her up."

"What's the idea?" Mario askedh as Heather whispered it to her friends.

"That's a great idea, Heather! Kami will surely feel better when we do that!" Linus smiled.

"And that's what being a friend is all about." Charlie Brown smiled.

"That's right, Charlie Brown!" Barney smiled before hearing a bike bell. "And speaking of friends..." he then pointed to Lila coming into the park on her bike.

"HEY!" Snoopy happily exclaimed.

"Hey guys! Miss Etta told me I'd find you guys here!" Lila smiled as she parked her bike and removed her helmet. "So, who're your new friends?" she asked.

"Lila, this is Mario...Scott...and Angela." Barney smiled. "Mario, Scott, Angela, this is Lila."

"Hi, Lila." Angela greeted.

"Come on! Follow us!" Eudora said.

Sally added on "Heather has a super dee duper idea!"

Lila thought for a minute and smiled. "I'M COMING!" she declared before looking up at the rustic red caboose. "WHOA!" she said.

"Pretty cool, huh?" Scott asked. "It's an actual train's caboose!"

"Where's the rest of the train?" Lila gawked.

Marcie smiled "That's what I asked, too."

"Come on, enough chit-chat!" Violet bossed. "Let's check it out!"

"And we have someone we want to introduce you to, too." Sally told Lila.

"Another new friend?" Lila squealed in delight. "LEAD THE WAY!"

The gang was in awe over the Caboose. "This is truly amazing." Linus smiled.

"It's still missing something..." Lucy pondered before smiling and pulling out her mirror and placing it on a table. "There. Now it feels complete."

"Does she always focus on her looks?" Angela chuckled.

"Not when she's being bossy." Marcie giggled.

"Alright guys, go fetch the stuff from the dress up chest." Charlie Brown said and Linus, Angela, Mario, and Peppermint Patty did just that. They then approached a still sad Kami. "Uh, Kami, this is our friend Lila."

"Hi there Kami!" Lila smiled.

"Hi." Kami replied sadly.

"Kami, I know you're feeling sad about being the last in line, but you know what? The Caboose is always the last in line and it's the most important car in the whole train." Barney explained.

"It is?" Kami asked, a bit surprised.

"That's right." Barney replied.

"A caboose is a car?!" Sally sounded confused.

"Yes." Eudora gritted her teeth.

"You see, a caboose is where the train's conductor rides." Barney added on. "And it's a conductor's job to take care of the train and tell everyone what to do. And that's VERY important!"

Lucy smiled "So we thought it'd be fun if you could be the caboose's conductor, for today."

"It was all Heather's idea!" Mario added.

"It was?" Kami smiled at that. "Thanks, Heather. But a conductor, me?"

"Sure, here's a conductor's vest." Mario explained.

"It looks so pretty." Barney commented.

"And your conductor's hat." Angela added.

"It fits you, so well!" commented Lila. "You look great!"

"And here's the kind of watch conductors used, a long time ago." Barney pulled out a pocket watch and gave it to Kami.

Kami gave it a listen. "Wow! It ticks!" she smiled. "So, what does a conductor do?"

"Well, lots of things!" Barney smiled. "He counts the cars on the train, from the engine to the caboose!"

"One, two, three, four, five!" the kids counted.

"Very good! And then, when it's time to go, he looks at his watch and calls 'All aboard!'" Barney explained.

"Like this? All aboard!" Kami happily exclaimed.

"Just like that!" Heather giggled.

"So now what?" Peppermint Patty asked.

"Let's pretend to be a train!" Kami smiled.

"Great idea, Kami! We'll all line up from first to last!" Lila smiled.

"Barney, would you please be our engineer since Kami's the conductor?" Scott asked.

"Why I'd be delighted to!" Barney smiled. "Just let me get dressed up!" He then left to fetch his costume.

"OK gang! Let's all line up!" Peppermint Patty smiled.

"CHOO CHOO!" Snoopy declared.

"Oh Snoopy, never change." Lila smiled sweetly, pulling out a book on trains from her backpack. "Look what I got at the library!"

Marcie smiled "That must be the book you checked out a few days ago."

"It sure is." Lila said, opening the book. "It says here that every train should stay on the tracks."

Kami looked over at the toy train "It's on track!" she declared.

"And some trains carry people, in passenger cars. See the windows?" Lila pointed at a picture.

"Oooooooooooh!" Snoopy and Woodstock said.

"I wonder if Beethoven ever rode a train..." Schroeder mentioned.

Lila kept reading. "And other trains carry all sorts of things in their box cars."

"They sort of look like boxes with wheels." Scott mentioned.

"DUH! She said BOX car!" Lucy replied.

"You'll get used to it." Linus whispered to Angela and Mario as they all took their places.

"Here I come!" Barney smiled, dressed in an engineer's costume.

"You look excellent, Big Purple!" Peppermint Patty smiled as the gang got back in line.

"Why thank you. Alright Kami, you know what to do." Barney chuckled.

"ALL ABOARD!" Kami shouted. With that, Woodstock imitated a train whistle and the kids, animals, and dinosaur began to move like a train.

Barney:

Chugga-chugga-chugga-chugga-chuga. Whoo, whoo!

Chugga-chugga-chugga-chugga-chuga. Whoo, whoo!

A train rides on a railroad track.

It makes a sound like clickety-clack.

It blows a great big whistle too.

That makes a sound like this, whoo, whoo!

Barney, Barney's Friends, and Peanuts Gang:

Chug-a-chug. Whoo, whoo!

The train goes rolling through.

Chug-a-chug. Clickety-clack!

The caboose rides in the back.

Barney, Charlie Brown, Heather, Lucy, Linus, Schroeder, Franklin, and Violet:

Trains, they have an engineer.

Who rides in the engine, so they can steer.

Lila, Sally, Eudora, Patty Swanson, Peppermint Patty, Marcie, and Pigpen:

There's even a conductor too.

Who always shouts "All Aboard!" to you!

Barney, Barney's Friends, and Peanuts Gang:

Chug-a-chug. Whoo, whoo!

The train goes rolling through.

Chug-a-chug. Clickety-clack!

The caboose rides in the back.

Chugga-chugga-chugga-chugga-chuga. Whoo, whoo!

A train rides on a railroad track.

The engine in the front. The caboose in the back.

And when you see a train go by,

Make sure you stop and wave, say "Hi!".

Barney, Barney's Friends, and Peanuts Gang:

Chug-a-chug. (Chug-a-chug.)

Whoo, whoo! (Whoo, whoo!)

The train goes rolling through.

The caboose rides in the back.
