Chapter 20, Edward's perspective:

I took a breather in the break room, enjoying my Door Dashed Chic-fi-A meal while reflecting on the rollercoaster of emotions I experienced since leaving Jasper's room. Our recent encounter felt like a mind-bending movie with intense scenes playing on repeat in my head.

Jasper, despite his frailty, was straight-up breathtaking, like, on another level compared to when we first crossed paths in Forks. His magnetic charm had me completely breathless. His innocent face was a work of art, and those unruly blonde curls had this wild, untamed beauty that had me in a vice grip. All I wanted was to chill in his room and chat the night away.

His captivating blue eyes held the universe's secrets, leaving me entranced and longing for more. Our connection felt cosmically destined, sparking an intense bond.

Not only did I sense the chemistry, but his family did too. Their playful banter and knowing looks spoke volumes, acknowledging the unspoken connection between us. It was as if they confirmed what our hearts had already discovered - this was a genuine and undeniable reality that everyone could feel.

Rosie had an uncensored nature that was both amusing and slightly embarrassing. She fearlessly spoke her mind, disregarding others' opinions. Her bold words hung in the air as we conversed, leaving me momentarily stunned yet admiring her unfiltered authenticity.

Deep down, I couldn't ignore the truth that Rosie pointed out. There was an undeniable chemistry, a magnetic pull that became increasingly difficult to ignore. However, as a medical professional, I had a responsibility to maintain ethical boundaries, which complicated things greatly when it came to exploring anything beyond our professional connection.

Amidst the laughter and noise, I felt a surge of gratitude for Jasper's understanding and his heartfelt apology. Although Rosie's boldness wasn't his doing, he willingly took responsibility for it. This act showcased his character and genuine concern for others. It was a clear indication that he cherished our connection and was determined to set things right.

Despite my desire to explore a deeper connection with Jasper, his marital status and the potential impact on my professional integrity made me hesitate. The internal battle between my emotions and the potential consequences left me torn.

Rosie's impactful presence, with her unapologetic personality and razor sharp tongue, left a lasting impression. Despite her unconventional approach, her good intentions and genuine care were evident, even if she ruffled some feathers.

I valued Rosie's directness but understood the importance of setting boundaries and showing respect. I realized that I shouldn't let her words impact my judgment or sway my decisions. My main priority was supporting Jasper as his doctor and aiding in his recovery. Since he was still married, there were many uncertainties that only he could clarify. It was crucial to let him take the lead and share the information I needed to make informed choices.

Jasper's musical passions amazed me. His talent and passion left me in awe. His vocals ignited a fire within me. Surprisingly, I had set one of his songs as my ringtone, amplifying our connection. It felt like the universe was playing a magical tune, intertwining our lives in a beautiful way.

Being with Jasper felt natural, like we'd been friends forever. Our conversations flowed effortlessly, filled with laughter and shared passions. Despite his hardships, Jasper exuded genuine warmth and authenticity that captivated me.

Tonight, my mind wandered, conjuring vivid images. I pictured us on a cozy couch, enjoying fries and stealing sweet kisses during a movie. Our laughter and whispered conversations would create a serene and intimate atmosphere. It was a profound longing to be close to him and revel in the sheer joy of his company.

Reality pulled me back, reminding me of the complexities and responsibilities as his doctor. I had to prioritize judgment and maintain the trust he placed in me. Though I cherished our connection, I would keep a respectful distance and honor boundaries. Caring for him was my calling, fueling my dedication. I knew my actions could make a tangible difference in his recovery, so my focus remained there.

Jasper's story deeply resonated with me, evoking a whirlwind of emotions. Anger surged through me, a fiery rage at the unfathomable pain inflicted on him by someone who should have loved and protected him. I couldn't comprehend how someone, especially a spouse, could commit such unimaginable acts of harm. My anger reflected my empathy and compassion for Jasper, intensifying my determination to support him on his healing journey.

My anger extended beyond Jasper's husband to the power dynamics and cycle of abuse that enabled such acts. It was frustration with the world and a deep-seated indignation at the injustice. This anger compelled me to advocate for change and challenge systems that perpetuated such injustice. I wanted to ensure that survivors like Jasper receive the support and justice they deserve.

It Jasper's life, respecting his autonomy and the boundaries of his marriage. My goal was to provide a safe space where he could open up without judgment or harm.

As I reflected on our conversation, glimpses of Jasper's potential future flashed in my mind. I imagined him rediscovering happiness and reigniting his passion for music, free from the shadows of his past. I allowed myself to consider the possibility of spending more time together, but I knew the journey wouldn't be easy. Healing would require a dedicated team of professionals, each bringing their skills and empathy. I decided to seek guidance and support from my father to ensure I could provide the best care for Jasper.

Feeling the need for some fresh air, I made my way outside. But before I headed out, I wanted to fulfill my promise and check on Jasper. As I approached his room, I noticed that it was dimly lit and quiet. Curious, I inquired about his condition at the nurses' station. Beth informed me that he had already received his medications for the night and was finally getting some much-needed rest. His father was also present, peacefully asleep by his side.

Deciding not to disturb them, I opted to let them continue their rest undisturbed. I resolved to check on Jasper in the morning before I left. To let him know that I had stopped by, I left a sticky note on the inside of his door, gently reminding him that I had visited and would see him in the morning.

Beth gave me a knowing smile from across the nurses' station. "You know, Jasper is such a polite and respectful guy," she said, her voice filled with admiration. "He's always using 'yes ma'am' and 'no ma'am.' That boy was definitely raised with good manners."

I turned towards her, a smile forming on my face. "Absolutely," I replied. "He's a really genuine and kind-hearted person. I really like his energy and vibe!"

She leaned in, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial tone. "Edward, I couldn't help but notice the way Jasper looks at you. I think he might have a crush on you."

I chuckled, attempting to play it cool. "Nah, Beth, I think he's just being friendly. We have a good rapport, that's all."

She raised an eyebrow, clearly not convinced. "Sure, Edward. Believe what you want, but I know what I saw. I'm not ignorant. Boy, bye!"

I blushed, feeling a mixture of embarrassment and curiosity. "Alright, Beth, what exactly do you think you saw?" I asked, my voice laced with intrigue.

Beth leaned back, her expression thoughtful. "You two are sweet on each other. I see all that blushing and smiling, the way you he-he and ha-ha around each other!" She paused for a moment, her eyes focused. "Listen, Edward, it's only natural to feel attracted to someone, especially given what Jasper has been through. Maybe he's looking for some comfort and care. But let me tell you, I've seen enough in my years. You've handled yourself professionally, my friend. You haven't crossed any lines."

"Thank you, Beth," I responded, expressing my gratitude for her understanding. "I've been doing my best to support him without crossing any lines or overstepping boundaries."

Beth nodded, her eyes filled with wisdom. "You're handling it well," she acknowledged.

I nodded, feeling a sense of relief. "By the way, do you have any information on Jasper's husband?" I asked, my curiosity piqued.

She motioned for me to join her in a nearby chair, her voice dropping lower. "Actually, Edward, his husband James is currently in the ICU," she revealed quietly.

"Wait, seriously?" I exclaimed, my voice filled with shock. "What happened?"

Beth nodded, her expression grave. "Yes, it's true. I overheard Jasper talking to his dad, and apparently, his husband is in a pretty serious condition."

A wave of concern washed over me, and I leaned in closer. "Why is he in the ICU? What happened?" I asked, my voice curious.

Beth leaned in closer, her voice barely audible. "Out of respect for patient privacy, I can't go into too much about his husband's since he's not under our care. However, I did hear some things from some of my friends who work over in the green tower."

"I see."

"I do know that Jasper expressed concerns about his husband having access to his information. We assured him that his husband's access has been restricted in all our databases. He can't even find out which room Jasper is in."

I nodded, taking in the information. "Can Jasper visit him in the ICU?" I asked, hoping for some clarity.

Beth nodded in response. "Yes, Jasper did visit earlier today. His husband granted him access, but Jasper chose not to reciprocate. However, his dad wasn't too happy about it."

"I can understand why," I replied, feeling a mix of sympathy for Jasper and frustration with the complex dynamics at play.

"That's not all," Beth continued, her voice filled with a mix of shock and disbelief. "Jasper's dad and his uncle, the good-looking one, put his husband in the ICU."

I leaned back, my eyes widening in disbelief. "No way! You lying," I said, struggling to process the information.

Beth nodded, her expression somber. "I wish I was, but it's true. It happened last night. Jasper and his dad were discussing some sort of vigilante justice they enacted on his husband."

"Wow," I muttered, unable to comprehend the level of violence that had taken place.

"And here's another shocker," Beth continued, her voice filled with anger. "Jasper's husband has done some truly awful things to him. Cheating, for one. While I was in the room, Jasper mentioned that his husband is still receiving texts from the person he cheated with. Apparently, Jasper has his husband's phone."

I felt sympathy for Jasper and anger towards his husband for the pain he had caused.

"See that's 'fracker nackel bull'! Man if I had been in Jasper's life then when he was hurting him like that, I would have physically fought for him! That's some some bull shit! Man!" My fists clenched involuntarily. "That's messed up, Beth. It's infuriating to see someone hurt Jasper like that."

Beth placed a comforting hand on my shoulder. "I know, Edward. It really is."

I took a deep breath. "I'll do my best to make sure his medical needs are met. Maybe get him support for the emotional needs or even be a support. But just know this is some bull!"

Beth smiled, her eyes filled with warmth. "Supporting someone through tough times can be rewarding and challenging."

"That's very true."

Beth gave me a curious look, her expression filled with intrigue. "Edward, have you ever been in a serious relationship before?"

I took a moment to reflect, memories flooding back to a time when love and heartbreak were intertwined in my own life. "Yeah, I have," I responded, my voice carrying a hint of nostalgia. "His name was Marc."

Beth leaned in, her eyes filled with curiosity. "Oh, tell me more about Marc. How did you two meet?"

"We actually met during my freshman year of college. I was just starting my journey as a medical student, and Marc was studying fashion. We were both drawn to each other's passions and drive."

"We fell head over heels for each other, and our connection was incredible," I continued, my voice filled with nostalgia. "Within three years, we were talking about our future together. We had dreams of building a life filled with love, support, and shared adventures. But then, everything took a sudden turn."

I paused, a tinge of sadness and frustration seeping into my voice. "One day, Marc dropped a bombshell on me. He told me that he had made the decision to move to Paris to pursue further studies in fashion. It was devastating news because I was so deeply in love with him, and we always thought we were solid."

"Little did I know, Beth, that Marc had a dark side lurking beneath the surface, one that remained hidden for years," I confessed, my voice tinged with bitterness. "As our relationship progressed, I started noticing subtle signs of manipulation and deceit, but I chose to ignore them, blinded by my love for him."

Truthfully, Beth," I continued, my voice filled with frustration, "Marc's decision to move to Paris wasn't solely driven by his career aspirations. It was a clever disguise for his true intentions."

Taking a deep breath, I gathered my thoughts before continuing. "Right before he was about to leave, I discovered the unimaginable. Marc wasn't going to Paris to pursue his fashion dreams. Instead, he was going to New York to be with someone else. When I confronted him about it, we got into a big fight. He became defensive and started lying. The situation escalated, and he ended up physically assaulting me. He tried to apologize immediately, but I had reached my breaking point. I packed my things and left, only returning later to collect the rest. We've been completely done since then."

"Putting his hands on me was a grave mistake," I declared, my voice firm and resolute. "I didn't let his actions go unpunished. I pressed charges against him, and as a result, he had to face the consequences. He ended up going to jail and paying fines. Additionally, he was required to attend anger management sessions and undergo court-ordered drug testing. The whole nine yards."

I paused for a moment, reflecting on the difficult journey I had gone through. "It was a tough decision to make, but I knew it was necessary for my own safety and well-being. No one should tolerate abuse in any form."

Beth nodded, her expression filled with understanding and support. "You did the right thing, Edward. It takes immense strength to stand up for yourself and hold someone accountable for their actions."

I nodded, feeling a mix of relief and empowerment. "Thank you, Beth. It was a challenging experience, but it taught me the importance of setting boundaries and prioritizing my own well-being."

"The pain and betrayal I felt in that moment, Beth, it's beyond words. The person I loved, the one I saw a future with, shattered my trust and chose someone else over me. It hit me like a wrecking ball, leaving me shattered and questioning everything we had together."

Beth listened intently, sensing that there was more weighing on my heart. "Edward, I can tell there's something else on your mind. What's bothering you?"

"It's just... when I think about what Jasper went through with his husband, it breaks my heart. I wish he had been able to make the same choice as me, to walk away from an abusive relationship."

My voice quivered with emotion as I continued, "I can't help but feel so sorry for him, Beth. He fell in love with someone who hurt him so badly, someone who showed no compassion or remorse. I wouldn't wish that upon anyone."

"Edward, it's completely understandable that you feel such empathy for Jasper. You've been through the pain of an abusive relationship yourself, and you know firsthand the importance of standing up for yourself and finding the strength to leave."

I nodded, my voice trembling with a mix of grief and empathy. "Exactly, Beth. When Marc hit me, it was devastating, but it doesn't even compare to the suffering Jasper endured. The thought of what he went through is unbearable, and it hurts to know that he couldn't find the strength to break free from that toxic situation."

Beth nodded, understanding the impact that my experience with Marc had on me.

"I hurt for Jasper." She said

I looked at Beth, grateful for her support and advice. "Me too. Thank you, Beth. I really appreciate you."

She paused for a moment, lightening the conversation. "You know, Jasper was quite adorable with all that blushing during the exam," she remarked with a smile. "I just wanted to squeeze him and shower him with love."

I chuckled. "He really was. And honestly, he didn't need to be embarrassed. All I cared about was making sure he'll be alright after everything."

"Exactly!" Beth exclaimed, laughing. "And his Dad giving him a hard time, that was so embarrassing for him. Jasper is clearly smitten with you." She winked playfully.

We both laughed. "Oh, it was definitely an awkward moment, but you can tell his father really cares about him," I replied.

As Beth and I continued reviewing our charts, our conversation was abruptly interrupted by the ringing of my phone. I glanced at the screen, noticing that it was my dad calling.

"Excuse me, Beth," I said, excusing myself as I answered the call. "Hey, Dad. How are you?" I waved to Beth and walked outside to have some privacy.

"Edward, I'm doing well. How about you, son?" My father's warm voice filled my ear, instantly bringing a sense of comfort and familiarity.

I took a moment to gather my thoughts before deciding to confide in him. "Actually, Dad, I texted you earlier because I really need my Dad right now. Can we talk?"

There was a brief pause on the other end of the line, as if my father was preparing himself to listen and offer his support. "Of course, son. I'm here for you. What's going on?"

"There's been a lot going on, and I just need someone to talk to."

"I'm yours. All ears."

"Well, Dad, I've been working closely with a patient here at the hospital, and I've learned about the abusive relationship he's been through. That's why he's here. His husband put him here. It's been weighing heavily on my mind, and I can't help but feel so sorry for him."

"I can understand why that would affect you, Edward. It's never easy to hear about someone going through such pain. What specifically is troubling you?"

"It's just that, Dad, I'm his doctor, and I want to provide him with the best care and support I can. But at the same time, he and I have a strong connection. It's cray, Dad!"

"I see."

"Like no for real Dad. I have been thinking about him all night. It's crazy! And he's definitely feeling me too." I briefly told him about what happened during the exam.

"Ah." He said. He chuckled. "Mmm,hmm. Interesting."

"I know, Dad, god help me but I really want to get with him."

"Mmmm." He laughed. "Well…son…I-"

"I mean not like that…I mean…god this ain't coming out right." I laughed at myself.

He laughed.

"Oh, Edward." He laughed again. "You're so funny. Tell me, what exactly do you want to do with him, Bud?"

I felt my face grow hot. "Dad!" We both laughed. "I mean I want to just hang out. That's what I'm saying." We laughed again. "I just think he's cool and yes he's very…omg Dad his eyes. Ugh. I can't."

He was laughing. "My dear Edward. You tickle me! Oh to be young again and full of…energy." He laughed softly. He soon collected himself. "It's a complex situation to navigate, Edward. It's important to be aware of the boundaries between professionalism and personal feelings."

"Yeah I got energy alright. Too much energy."

He laughed harder. "Oh "…son…"

"Well, I want him to feel safe and supported." I said laughing a little more. "He needs a lot of support."

"That's understandable, son. It's important to prioritize his well-being and ensure he feels comfortable. Have you considered seeking guidance from a trusted mentor or colleague who can provide some perspective?"

"Yes, I'm talking to him."

He chuckled.

"I completely trust you, Dad. I believe you can help me navigate this situation."

"I'm always here for you, son."

"Thank you, Dad. Your wisdom and support mean the most to me."

Dad's voice filled with warmth and pride. "I have no doubt that you will handle this with grace and compassion, Edward."

"Dad listen. Jasper is from Forks. I saw him at the hospital last week when I came to visit you. We bumped into each other a couple of times actually. I know you were the physician on duty that day so now knowing what I know I'm pretty sure you saw him."

As I mentioned that Jasper was from Forks, my hometown, my Dad proceeded with caution. Not because he didn't trust me, but because he always upheld his professional and ethical integrity when it came to his patients. Due to professional ethics and patient confidentiality, my father knew he couldn't discuss Jasper's case without his explicit consent.

With a measured tone, my father responded, "Edward, I do know Jasper, but as his previous attending physician, I cannot disclose any details about his case or situation without his consent. I apologize for any confusion or concern this may cause, but patient privacy is of utmost importance."

I nodded, understanding the importance of confidentiality. "I appreciate your adherence to professional ethics, Dad. I understand that Jasper's personal information should only be shared by him when and if he chooses to do so."

"I'm glad to hear that you understand, Edward. Patient privacy is a cornerstone of our profession, and we must always respect that. It's important to remember that even if we have personal connections or encounters with patients outside of the hospital, we must maintain confidentiality."

"Absolutely, Dad. Thanks for the reminder and I completely understand. I didn't mean to put you in a difficult position by mentioning Jasper. It's just that seeing him at the hospital and knowing his struggles has stirred up a lot of emotions in me."

"It's alright, Edward. I appreciate your honesty and trust in confiding in me."

"I understand, Dad. I want to provide the best care for him, but I also can't ignore the connection I feel towards him."

"It's a delicate balance, son. You have a caring heart, and that's a wonderful quality. It's okay to have strong emotions and connections with our patients. It shows compassion and empathy. But it's crucial to channel those emotions effectively and professionally."

"How do I do that Dad? Just walking in his room sends my mind into overdrive. Dad he's adorable with all that damn blushing and he's so freaking talented. Do you know he's part of a band….and I have his song as my ringtone and I didn't even know it was him! It's crazy!"

"Edward listen to me. I've been a very young man before and I truly get it, but let me advise you to continue to develop emotional resilience and boundary-setting skills. Here's what I suggest. Practice self-care. Take care of your own emotional well-being, such as engaging in activities you enjoy like such as your music, spending time with us, and seeking support when needed."

"Set boundaries by clearly distinguishing between your personal and professional life. Currently, your relationship with him is strictly professional, requiring you to maintain a professional demeanor while also demonstrating compassion and empathy. This entails minimizing banter, emotional engagement, and physical interactions. If he wishes to discuss matters unrelated to your role, kindly direct him to the social worker."

"You need to seek supervision and support, meet with mentors or therapists to discuss and manage emotional aspects of your work. Use healthy coping mechanisms like mindfulness, deep breathing, or journaling. Reflect on experiences and debrief with trusted colleagues or myself to learn from different perspectives."

"Edward, it's important for you to maintain the right level of emotional involvement with patients. You should provide support within your role while keeping a professional distance."

"Remember, Edward, finding the right balance between compassion and professionalism will allow you to provide great care to your patients while also taking care of yourself."

"So, basically, if I want more, I should step away."

"Yes, since you're new to your role with Jasper. It seems like you're doing well professionally, but if the personal and emotional attachment becomes overwhelming, it's best to step away."

"It makes me sad because I enjoy caring for him and seeing him heal and recover. I don't want to step away from my role in his medical care. What specific boundaries do I need to set?"

"Well by all means, stay in your role son, and give time to see if a personal relationship with Jasper evolves naturally. However, let me emphasize the importance of setting clear boundaries as a physician. Here are some specific boundaries you could set…"

"One…a professional and respectful approach during interactions with Jasper, focus only on his medical needs rather than personal emotions…"

"two…refrain from sharing personal information or stories that may blur the professional boundary. Instead, redirect the conversation to focus on Jasper's health and treatment…"

"three…make sure you treat all patients equally and don't show any favoritism towards Jasper, as it could compromise the objectivity of your medical judgment…"

"four…you should uphold patient confidentiality and not discuss Jasper's medical information or progress with anyone unless authorized by Jasper or required for medical purposes…".

"and five…like I've already said…consult with his colleagues or a supervisor to discuss any challenges you face in maintaining boundaries."

"Edward, by setting these boundaries, you can continue to provide excellent medical care while keeping the relationship with Jasper within the limits of a professional physician-patient dynamic."

"I think I can do that."

"I have no doubt you can."

"Has this ever happened to you, Dad?" I asked earnestly.

He paused as if thinking about what he wanted to say.

"Yes, Edward, there was a time when I experienced conflicting emotions while caring for a patient. It happened several years ago when I was already married to your mother. This patient's name was Charlotte, and she came to our clinic seeking treatment for a complex medical condition."

"Charlotte was not only physically attractive but also had a vibrant personality that drew people towards her. As I spent more time with her, discussing her medical concerns and witnessing her strength in the face of adversity, I found myself developing an emotional connection."

"However, I knew that I had made a commitment to your mother and that my role as a physician required me to maintain professional boundaries. It was a delicate situation that I had to handle with great care, ensuring that Charlotte received the best medical care while also respecting the sanctity of my marriage."

"I confided in your mother about the conflicting emotions I was experiencing. We had open and honest conversations about the challenges that can arise in the medical profession and how important it is to prioritize patient care while preserving the integrity of our marriage."

"Together, we agreed that setting clear boundaries was essential. I made a conscious effort to maintain a professional demeanor during Charlotte's appointments, focusing solely on her medical needs. I refrained from engaging in personal conversations beyond what was necessary for her treatment, redirecting the focus back to her health and recovery."

"I also sought guidance from a trusted colleague, who provided me with valuable advice on maintaining professional boundaries. This helped me navigate the emotional complexities of the situation while ensuring that Charlotte received the best care possible."

"Over time, my dedication to both my marriage and my commitment as a physician prevailed. The emotional connection I had felt for Charlotte gradually diminished, as I channeled my focus into providing her with the medical expertise she required."

"Through this experience, I learned the importance of open communication, trust, and the significance of setting boundaries in maintaining a strong and committed marriage while upholding professional ethics as a physician."

"Wow." I said . "Thanks for sharing that with me. I'm going to do my best to handle this right. I'm sure mom appreciated your honesty."

"Edward, when I confided in your mother about the emotions I was experiencing regarding Charlotte, she displayed an incredible depth of understanding and compassion. Esme has always been a pillar of strength and wisdom in our relationship, and her response to my revelation was no exception."

"After listening to my concerns, Esme took a moment to absorb the situation, contemplating the complexities that can arise in the realm of medicine. She acknowledged the human nature of emotions and the challenges we face as physicians in navigating those emotions while remaining true to our commitments."

"Esme's response was rooted in a deep sense of trust and confidence in our relationship. She recognized that my honesty in sharing my feelings was a testament to the strength of our connection and the importance I placed on our marriage. Rather than reacting impulsively or with anger, she approached the situation with grace and understanding."

"Together, we engaged in open and heartfelt discussions, exploring the complexities of emotions and the impact they can have on professional relationships. Esme voiced her concerns and fears, expressing her need for reassurance that the boundaries between my personal and professional life would remain intact."

"I assured Esme that my commitment to our marriage was unwavering, and that I understood the significance of maintaining professional boundaries. We made a conscious effort to reinforce our bond, focusing on the love and trust that had sustained us throughout the years."

"Esme displayed remarkable maturity and realism throughout our conversations. She acknowledged that feelings can arise unexpectedly, even in the context of a professional setting, but what truly mattered was how we handled those emotions."

"I love my Mom." I said. "I can totally see her doing that. She's always the best!"

"Yes, she is my soul mate."

"Thank you for sharing Dad."

"You're welcome, son. I'm always here for you, both as your father and as a fellow physician. I'm proud of the doctor you're becoming, and I have no doubt that you will navigate this situation with integrity and compassion. Just remember to take care of yourself in the process."

"I will, Dad. Thank you again for your support. I love you, Dad."

My father's voice softened as he responded, "I love you too, and I can't wait to see you next weekend when you come home to visit."

"I miss you, Dad. Please send my love to Mom and Alice. How are they doing?"

My father proceeded to give me a full update on my mother's well-being and shared recent highlights from Alice's life. He assured me that they were both doing well and eagerly awaiting my visit.

"Dad, before you go, I need to tell you something that happened with Jasper and his family. Jasper's father and uncle put James, his husband, in the ICU. They were seeking justice for Jasper, but things got out of hand, and now James is seriously injured. I'm told they both shot him and beat him pretty badly."

"Hmmm. I see." He said.

"Dad, this situation is crazy jacked up. He could have killed Jasper. James is evil. I have zero cares to give to him. I mean I can see why they hurt him,"

"Edward, I understand that you may feel that way, but it's important to approach this situation with empathy and care for all parties involved. While your primary concern may be Jasper's well-being due to the abusive situation, it doesn't mean we should completely disregard James."

"Dad I don't give a rat fuck about James and ion even know him!" I said bluntly. "Fuck him to hell for what he did to Jasper!"

"Edward. There's no need for that language son."

"I'm sorry, Dad. It's hard for me to feel sympathy for someone who has caused harm like that to someone. That's jacked up."

"I understand your protective instincts, Edward, but it's crucial to remember that everyone involved in this situation deserves compassion. James may have made terrible choices, but it's important to recognize that he may be dealing with his own struggles and issues."

"Man! Whatever! Dad it's just difficult for me to see beyond the pain Jasper has experienced. His husband is dead to me!"

"Edward, son, remember what I just instructed you to do. "Don't become too emotionally invested. Your goal is to remain neutral and provide professional support. I know James isn't your patient, but encouraging Jasper and finding other support for James to seek professional help is the best way to ensure their well-being. It's important to promote healing and growth for everyone involved."

"Dad…."

"I'm serious, Edward. You stay out of those weeds. Approach this situation with empathy and understanding for all involved. Remain objective. You can make a positive impact , but you are stepping outside of your lane, son. That is not your donut. Your role is to support him medically. If you don't think you can do that without becoming invested and compromising his care, you need to remove yourself from his medical team."

"I mean, Dad, I don't think you would be okay with someone hurting me like that."

"No I would never be okay with that. But that is irrelevant, Bud. That has nothing to do with Jasper. Son, I understand your concern for him and the desire for justice, but what happened before Jasper got in that treatment bed doesn't have a thing to do with you. The background info is good to know but that's not what dictates what you do now. Your focus has shifted to emotions and off of medical care. Call it back son. You are his physician not his savior. Find him support and if you're thinking of more personal involvement, remove yourself."

I sighed, growing kind of unjustifiably impatient with his wisdom about this. Mainly because truthfully I really wanted to be emotionally involved with this. I knew what he was saying was right, but ugh. He gave me a minute then started again.

"It's also important to emphasize that resorting to violence should never be the first option. In situations like these, it's crucial to involve the appropriate authorities and legal channels to ensure justice is served. There are other avenues available, such as reporting the abuse, seeking a restraining order, or even pursuing legal action. You have to prioritize everyone's safety and work towards a peaceful resolution. As a father, I can see how a man would want to seek justice for his son, but I don't condone violence of any kind unless in cases of true self-defense. If your life was threatened, then I would certainly fight for you, but I'm sure there are other avenues that could have been explored to address this situation."

"Maybe but I don't know Dad. I just don't know. I don't even know him like that and I want to get kick his ass off GP."

"Edward," he expressed, "this situation appears highly perilous and unstable. I understand your concern for Jasper, but involving yourself in a potentially violent family dispute could put you at risk. Now as a professional I have concern. As your Dad that seriously worries me."

"I appreciate your concern, Dad. I understand that you see the situation as dangerous and unstable. However, I believe I will take precautions to ensure my safety and handle the situation responsibly. I mean, Dad, I already know this. I can handle myself. Sometimes, I feel frustrated because it seems like you don't see me as a capable adult. It seems like at times you still perceived me as a child."

He sighed. "I know you can, Bud. But you are my son. It would kill me if something happened to you. I apologize. I understand that these situations can be dangerous, which is why I want you to approach this with caution."

"I mean, I won't get caught up in all that."

"But you are already getting caught up son. Listen to yourself. You can't even mention the man's name without becoming angry. Edward, just be careful, son, and consider your decisions. I only want you to be safe, Bud."

"Dad, I can handle myself! Stop all that worrying! You didn't raise a punk, Dad. I can take care of myself!"

"Edward, I never said you couldn't, son. You're taking what I said too far. Where is this frustration coming from?"

"I'm just saying I can handle myself."

"Edward, ok, son. Breathe. You're fine. I'm your father, Edward. It's my job to worry about you."

"It feels like every time things get difficult with me, you think I'm going to make foolish choices. I am very capable, Dad! You've been like this ever since Marc. I love you Dad and I'm not trying to be disrespectful right now, but I feel like you will always see that part of my past as my fault."

"Edward, I hear your frustration, and I apologize if it seems like I'm treating you unfairly. I understand that you're a grown man capable of handling yourself in challenging situations. My concern stems from a place of love and wanting to protect you. After all, Jasper is a married man and that alone can escalate. It's not about doubting your abilities, but rather about caring for your well-being."

"As for Marc, I admit that I had my reservations initially, but it was because I wanted what's best for you. I apologize if my lingering concerns are causing problems."

I groaned loudly.

"It's always the frustrating 'I told you so' mentality. And protection from what? So I made a mistake and chose the wrong person, Dad! I'm not perfect! And now I feel like you think I'm repeating that mistake. Like I can't keep myself safe. And like I'm too damn stupid to know Jasper is married."

"Edward, that's enough, son. You're misinterpreting everything I say. You're frustrated, and I'm sure it's been a long night for you. Maybe you should take a nap during your break."

"Still treating me like a kid," I said, and now I truly felt angry.

"Edward Anthony Cullen!" he scolded, using my full name, and I knew I had successfully provoked him. He maintained control. "Edward, I apologize if it seems like I'm undermining your capabilities or treating you like a child. That is not my intention. I understand that you're frustrated and feeling misunderstood right now. It's important to me to support you as an adult, and I'm making every effort to do that. I just want to ensure your well-being and help you avoid potential harm. If my words come across as condescending, I sincerely apologize. Please know that I respect you and your choices."

"It's okay Dad. I should have never brought it up." I said dryly. "Sorry to bother you."

He sighed. "You're not bothering me, son. But seriously, son, your attitude right now is completely uncalled for."

"I don't have an attitude, Dad."

"Edward, you're carrying on. You know how much I love you."

I took a deep breath and took a moment to collect myself. "I know you do, Dad. I'm sorry. I just genuinely want to make you proud. I simply want you to have faith in my ability to rely on myself and take care of those who need me."

"Edward, you listen to me. I am already incredibly proud of you," he said gently.

He paused, his voice filled with genuine affection. "Son, you have already shown great strength and independence. I believe in your abilities, and I apologize if my words may have made you doubt that. My intention is to be there for you, to guide you, and to protect you as a father should. Your happiness and success mean the world to me."

My response carried a hint of vulnerability as I opened up to my father. "Dad, I need to be honest with you. All of this is coming from our last conversation."

"Okay. I'm listening."

"During our last conversation, something you said really hurt my feelings," I admitted, my voice tinged hesitation and earnestness. "You said that I was silly to even choose Marc in the first place, and if I had listened to you, I wouldn't have been in that position to get hit in the first place."

"Edward Cullen! I do not recall saying that to you. Edward, I would give my life for you, and I certainly would never blame you for Marc's violence against you. I'm sorry if my words were misinterpreted, Edward," Dad clarified with a compassionate tone. "What I might have said was that considering the circumstances, choosing Marc as a partner may not have been the safest option. However, please understand that I never intended to imply blame or make you feel responsible for Marc's violent behavior."

"Dad, I understand that you may not recall saying it, but those words really stuck with me. They made me feel like it was my fault for getting hurt, as if I should have known better. It made me question my judgment and ability to protect myself."

I took a deep breath before responding respectfully but firmly, wanting to express my disagreement with my Dad's perspective. "That's how I interpreted what you said. Marc's actions were his own and should never be attributed to my choice of partner. Blaming me as the victim only perpetuates the cycle of abuse. Marc should be held accountable for his actions rather than questioning my choices. I was harmed, Dad, by someone who said he loved me. And during my last conversation with my father I-" my voice broke and hitched. I tried to fight back all of my emotions the. "I was made…t-to…feel like it was my fault." I sniffled and wiped my face. "Like I did something wrong."

There was a long pause.

"Edward, please, don't cry. I never meant to hurt you, and I can't bear to hear you in pain. I love you more than anything, and it hurts me deeply to know that you're hurting. But I have to be honest with you—I didn't say those things you're accusing me of. I would never blame you for what happened or make you feel like it was your fault. I have always loved and supported you, and it breaks my heart that you think otherwise."

"I understand that there may have been a miscommunication or misunderstanding between us, and I'm truly sorry for any role I may have played in that. Please believe me when I say that I love you unconditionally, and I would never do anything to intentionally harm you."

I sniffled and didn't say anything.

He sighed deeply, his voice filled with remorse. "Edward, I am truly sorry. You misunderstood what I meant."

"Dad you made me feel like you don't trst my judgment or my ability to make wise choices in my personal life. I felt like I failed. It's not that I want you to approve of everyone I date, but knowing that you feel like this made me question myself, and it hurt."

I paused, gathering my thoughts before continuing.

"I know you have my best interests at heart, and I appreciate your concern, but I need you to believe in me and my ability to make decisions that are right for me. It's important for me to feel like you trust me and that you have faith in my judgment."

My Dad took a moment to let his words sink in before concluding, "Edward, I'm sorry I hurt your feelings. Since the day you were born, you have been at the center of my joy. I have always strived to be the best father I can be, supporting you in your choices and celebrating your achievements. I am sorry if it has ever seemed otherwise. I want nothing more than for you to be happy and fulfilled. I will always be here for you, Edward. I will support you in your pursuits, and I will be your biggest cheerleader. Together, we can work through any fears or doubts that you may have."

He paused, his voice filled with reassurance. "Edward, I trust your judgment, and I believe in your ability to make wise choices. I also want you to have the freedom to follow your heart and make decisions that feel right for you."

We were quiet for a moment while I found my balance again.

"Dad, I'm sorry. Thank you for taking the time to listen and for clarifying your intentions. I appreciate your apology and I understand that misunderstandings happen. I want you to know that I'm sorry too if I came across as ungrateful or disrespectful."

"Son, I love you, and I want nothing more than for you to be happy. I realize now that I might have been a bit overbearing in trying to guide you. I understand that you're an adult and that you have the right to make your own choices."

"Thank you, Dad."

"Absolutely, Edward. Our bond is strong, and I'm committed to you son. Don't ever think any less."

"I love you too, Dad. Thank you for understanding and for being there for me."

"Well I guess I'll let you get back work." He told me.

"Well I've pretty much made all of my rounds. Now I'm just reviewing charts. I guess I'll see what hospital drama is going on. These nurses and these doctors are something else."

He laughed. "Do tell."

I sniffled again and removed my glasses. I was grateful for a moment to let the heaviness go. I hated fighting with my Dad. I loved him so much and he meant the world to me.

"Well, Dad, you won't believe what's been happening at the hospital lately," I chuckled. "First off, Dr. Williams and Nurse Thompson seem to be in a never-ending battle of wits. It's like a sitcom waiting to happen! They're constantly trying to one-up each other with their medical knowledge. I swear, sometimes it feels like they're competing for the title of 'Most Brilliant Mind in the Hospital' instead of taking care of patients."

"Ah, the classic doctor-nurse rivalry," My Dad chuckled. I'm sure he was grateful for the distraction too. "But that's not all, right?"

"Oh, definitely not," I replied with a mischievous grin. "Dr. Greg got fired last week. He was literally drinking during staff meeting. It was in his tumbler. Actually he would have gotten caught if it wasn't for Sherry. She ratted him out because they've been beefing."

My Dad burst into laughter. "Oh, my!"

"And greedy Dr. Ramirez got caught eating all the snacks from the break room fridge! He's so greedy and he's always eating everybody's food."

My Dad was still chuckling. "Well, it sounds like things are never dull around there. You certainly have your fair share of entertainment."

"You better believe it, Dad," I exclaimed. "It's always some mess!"

"Keep a sense of humor, and it'll make the long shifts a little easier to bear."

"You're right, Dad," I said, my voice softening. "And speaking of bearing things, I want to apologize again for the confusion earlier. I shouldn't have overreacted and disrespected you. I'm very sorry."

My dad sighed on the other end of the line. "No, son, I should have chosen my words more carefully during our talk last week. I hurt your feelings and I'm sorry too."

Tears welled up in my eyes as I replied, "I love you, Dad. More than anything in the world. I never want our misunderstandings to come between us."

There was a pause before he spoke, his voice filled with emotion. "Edward, my son, I love you too. Nothing could ever change that. We're family, and we'll always find a way to work things out. Remember that."

"I will, Dad," I whispered, my voice choked with emotion. "Thank you for understanding."

We exchanged heartfelt apologies once more, expressing our love and appreciation for each other. In that moment, the weight of our previous argument melted away, replaced by the warmth of our bond. It was a reminder of the unconditional love we shared, and the strength it gave us to overcome any obstacles that came our way.
