Witch and the hothead 10
Hermione
I was still giggling when we walked back in and sat down to continue our dinner. The look on their faces when I scared them and the scream Quil let out were hilarious.
Biting down on my lip to try to stop my laughter, but one look at their faces was enough, and I burst out laughing.
"What are you laughing at, Lil' Miss?" Quil asks, his brows raised with a smirk on his face.
"You should have seen your faces when you noticed me in the doorway and your scream Quil. You did not sound like a lethal wolf, more like a damsel in distress." I giggle.
"Hey! If you're not careful, I'll show you just how lethal I can be. He says and bares his teeth, growling, making Jacob laugh and smack him on the back.
"Don't make empty threats Quil, we all know you're more like a teddy bear than a wolf" Jacob says winking at me.
They help themselves to a second serving, praising my food as they practically inhale it. I smile watching them, a warm feeling in my chest. Relieved that they took the news of me being a witch in stride.
"How did you pick up on something being different about me Quil?" I ask, I know he didn't see me do any magic.
He chews looking at me before swallowing it down with a sip of his soda, shrugging his shoulders.
"It wasn't until we arrived here at the house that I noticed that there was like some static energy around you, you don't smell any different from other humans, but that buzzing feeling is not something I've encountered before."
Frowning I ask "But didn't you interact with the MACUSA employee that was here before me?"
"We did, but he was a fumbling idiot that reeked of nervousness and disgust every time he was in our presence. He could have passed as an ordinary human, no buzzing aura around him, that's for sure." Jacob says and frowns.
That's weird, maybe it has something to do with the increased strength in my magic since I arrived here at the property. And if that's the case, why?
Lost in thought, I jump when I feel a hand on my shoulder shaking me gently.
"Hey, are you okay? You zooned out there for a minute. "Jacob asks with concern on his face.
I nod and smile "Yeah, I'm fine, just thinking. It's strange that you didn't pick up on his magic at all but felt mine almost immediately, I wonder why."
"I've been thinking about something" Quil says, getting my attention before I get lost in my thoughts again.
"When we entered the house and were looking for you, I noticed that I couldn't hear any sounds coming from outside. You know about our heightened senses, I guess?" He asks, and I nod my head, waiting for him to continue.
"I only heard Jake, not a single sound from the outside the second I stepped inside the house. I should have been able to hear the ocean and the sound of the forest. Eaven your heartbeat, but nothing. Why?" His brows furrowed as he watched me.
"Before I got here, I read up on some charms and spells that would mask my smell, good to know that one works. I hope it works with the vampires too" I say, smiling sheepishly.
"Leeches or bloodsuckers" Jacob growled.
I notice how his whole body starts to tremble, his breathing is labored.
Without thinking, I place a hand on his forearm.
"I'm sorry, I won't talk about them if it makes you upset. It's probably very unprofessional of me to say this, but from what I read in the file about them, I have to admit I'm pretty nervous about meeting them" I say laughing sheepishly.
Jacob takes a deep breath and the tremors in his body disappear. He rubs his face.
"Sorry 'bout that, the wolf always gets worked up when I think about them."
I pat his arm and sit back, folding my arms on the table. My heart goes out to him. It can't be easy to be separated from your supposed soulmate.
Because of his reaction, I realize it's probably best not to ask too many questions right now but to wait until I get the opportunity to talk to the whole pack at once.
"I also put wards up around the house, that's why you aren't able to hear anything apart from the sounds inside" I continue.
"Wards against what?" Quil asks, and I quickly glance over at Jacob before looking back at him. He nods his head in understanding, not pushing for more information about it.
We let go of the supernatural for a while and just talked about our lives. They ask questions about my life before moving here, and I ask about theirs.
Quil gathers our dishes and pushes me out of the way when I tell him he doesn't have to.
"Go do some magical tricks or something to entertain Jake while I finish up here "he says teasingly, and I laugh, shaking my head.
Jake snickers behind me. "You know, he described you as a buzzing electric device earlier, "making me choke on my laughter.
" what? That sounds indecent." I scrunch up my face and Jakes booming laughter fills the kitchen.
"That's what I said. Don't mind him, he is not the brightest tool in the toolbox."
He grins and dodges as Quil throws the dish sponge at him.
"Stop talking shit about me, you traitor!" He grumbles with a teasing smile on his face before turning back to the sink. I giggle at their antics, catching Jacobs eye and he grins at me.
"You need help with anything around here before we leave?" he asks.
"I could use some help removing the old shower upstairs" I say.
"On it!" He says and jogs up the stairs.
I walk over to the fireplace and stack it with firewood before snapping my fingers softly, watching a small flame light up in my palm. I direct the flame at the firewood and watch as it catches fire.
I really need to talk to Severus about this. I quickly check the time: 6 p.m.; he is probably asleep by now.
I look around my empty living room, regretting that I didn't order a sofa online right now. I just want to cuddle down underneath a blanket with a glass of wine in front of the crackling fire.
This shift in my magic makes me hesitant to use it, and it makes me frustrated and limited. I'm so used to using magic in my everyday life now that it feels crippling to not know if it's safe to use.
I whisper a quiet 'accio sock' and it comes sailing down and lands in my hand softly.
Hmm, maybe that's it. Before I came here, I had to be more firm and use more power, focus and energy to use magic. Here, it feels easier and lighter, as if magic is in the air around me.
I drop the sock on the floor and imagine a plush, burgundy three-seat sofa with a divan in corduroy. I carefully turn my wrist and watch as the sock turns into the sofa I imagined in my head.
I smile, relieved that managed to use my magic in a safe way, and happy with the result before throwing myself down on the sofa.
For the first time today I feel how tired I am, and I sigh while listening to Quil shuffling around in the kitchen and the sound of Jacob tearing down the shower upstairs.
I glance at the bathtub in the corner and carefully raise my hand as I whisper 'Wengardium Leviosa" and watch as the tub slowly begins to levitate and hover in the air a few centimeters above the floor. I lower my hand slowly, and the tub lands without a sound again.
"Where did this come from?" Quil asks behind me. Gasping as he startled me. They certainly move silently, considering their size.
He walks around the sofa and sits down, running his hand over the armrest.
"I transfigured it out of a sock" I say, and laugh at his confused face before summoning another sock. His mouth drops open and he lets out a shriek as I turn it into a cushion that matches the sofa. I throw it at his head and it bounces off and lands on the floor.
A laugh from upstairs makes us both jump and I look up at Jacob. He is leaning on the railing, looking down at us.
"Do that again it was fucking hilarious "he laughs.
I smirk, and this time I do not hold back as I send the pillow flying, hitting him in the face. Quil laugh with me, and I hold my stomach from laughing so hard.
The cushion comes flying down, hitting Quil hard at the back of his head making him let out a ' ouf ' before he jumps up and grabs it off the floor, ready to throw it back at Jacob again.
"Hey, stop it now, before you destroy my new house" I scowl playfully, snatching the cushion from Quils hands.
Jacob comes down the stairs, wiping his hands on his cut-off jeans shorts, before sitting down in the spot Quil just vacated.
"The shower is gone, I threw it out of the window. I'll have someone come pick it up tomorrow."
Without a word, Quil lifts the tub, carries it over his shoulder, and walks up the stairs and into the bathroom. That warm feeling of gratitude hits again and I swallow the lump in my throat.
"Here, take this and call Sam tomorrow. I'll talk to him later tonight and fill him in on who you are."
Jake says and gives me the business card for 'Uley Construction'. I smile and put it in the back pocket of my pants.
"I think you should talk to him before speaking with the council. They are a bunch of old, grumpy farts that have no clue what it means to be a protector of these lands today." He mutters before smiling at me.
"And he can help you with the plumbing and the repairs you need on the house." He gets up and walks towards the door just as Quil walks down the stairs, and I get up to follow them outside.
It's dark, and the air is cold, smelling like the ocean. Quil pats me on the back, jumps down the porch, and lands gracefully on the ground below, smiling.
"Are you going to be okay out here alone tonight?" I smile and nod.
""Thank you for everything. I'm so relieved. I'm glad you took the news about me being a witch okay."
Jacob smiles. "I can't promise all of the pack will take it the same way, don't let it bother you."
"Yeah, not everyone can be as cool as me and Jake." Quil says and grins. I laugh and wave before they turn and jog into the forest, disappearing in the dark.
I let out a sigh. What a day! I walk back inside and close the door behind me. Throwing up more wards, the lamps inside flicker at the magic interference.
Walking up the stairs to inspect the bathroom, Jacob really did a great job removing the old shower.
I enter my bedroom and grab my knitted blanket before walking down the stairs again. I grab a wine glass and pour myself a glass before settling down on my new sofa and cuddling down underneath the blanket, stretching out and relaxing.
I summon my speaker from the kitchen and put on some Snoh Alegra, sipping my wine, staring at the fire. I let my eyes wander over the walls and the ceiling. The carvings on the wooden beams really are beautiful.
Placing the glass on the floor, I close my eyes and smile. I have a new job, my own house, and two new friends. It was a good start to my new life.
Waking up on the sofa the next morning, I feel disoriented, and it's cold.
I levitate some new firewood into the fireplace before casting a silent incendio and watching the fire start again.
I stretch my back, let out a groan as some joints pop, and relax back under the blanket.
I really need to order more stuff for the house and then fix what I can with the exterior of the house. Some of the floorboards on the porch are in bad shape, along with some general wear and tear.
I unlock my phone and send Severus a text letting him know I've settled in and to call me when he can.
I get up from the sofa, wrapping the blanket around me as I walk to the kitchen to make some breakfast.
Standing in front of the window, staring out over the ocean as I nibble on my toast and sip my disgusting instant coffee, I shudder, pour it out in the sink, and sit down at the kitchen island, scrolling on my phone, looking for the stuff I need online.
Pulling out the business card Jacob gave me last night, maybe I should make the call now and just get it over with, but I'm nervous.
Sam Uley is the alpha of the pack, and I have a feeling he's not going to be as open as Jacob and Quil were to the news about me being here.
But I really needed that bathtub installed and some radiators, the house is too big to get warmed up with the fireplace alone.
I put the business card back in my pocket, and grab my coat, and cast a warming charm stepping out on the porch. The weather is calmer today, and the ocean looks peaceful in the distance.
I walk slowly on the patch leading towards the cliffs. The atmosphere here is peaceful, but the forest and the big cliffs are impressive and make me feel small.
My phone ringing startles me, and I watch Severus name flash on the screen.
"Hello Severus!"
"Hello, what is that noise in the background?" he asks, grumbling.
I quickly cast a muffilato around me, canceling all the noise around me.
"Is that better? I'm standing on a cliff, looking out over the Pacific. It's magnificent." I gush and hear him sigh on the other end.
"If you wanted to talk about the environment of your new home, you should have called Longbottom, I have no interest in listening to your rambling."
He says and I can almost see the sneer on his face.
"Pardon me Sir, I shall not waste your precious time talking about trivial matters," I tease, and he grunts.
"I actually wanted to talk to you about something important, and since you're in a mood, I'll jump right to it and skip the pleasantries."
"Please do," he mutters.
I tell him about the change in my magic and how it seems that the whole land is full of it. The ease I find in casting spells and charms and my wards being much stronger than back in London.
He is silent, only humming to let me know he is listening.
I tell him about Jacob and Quil and what I learned in the files about the pack and the clan of vampires.
"Have you been working on your occlumency shields?" He asks in a serious voice after hearing about the vampires.
"Yes, I have, but I'm still slightly nervous. After reading the files, my opinion is that the vampire clan is obviously the problem, and Edward is seriously freaking me out. "
I confess, and Severus agrees with me, telling me that I should trust my gut.
"If you feel the need to leave, leave. Do not hesitate, even for a second. This is vampires Hermione, not some fluffly animal that you want to rescue."
I laugh at his choice of words, but I agree and promise that I will be careful.
I walk back to the house.
"If I could get you a portkey, would you be able to visit me?" I ask.
I know this is something very much out of Severus comfort zone, and I let out a nervous giggle.
"You are the one I trust the most, and I could really use your insight on the change in my magic and your help with how I'm going to face this task I've been given."
I hear him shuffling around, but he says nothing for a few seconds, making me regret asking.
I open my mouth again to tell him I'm being stupid and to forget about it when he finally answers.
"I have an order for S:t Mungos this weekend, but after that, my schedule is clear for a couple of weeks. Should you be able to arrange a portkey, I will be there. I know you don't wish to burden others with your worries, but know this, if you need me there, I will make sure I get there. One way or another."
I blink back the tears that threaten to escape and swallow the lump in my throat. His words make me warm in a way that makes me miss my parents.
"Thank you, Severus, "I whisper and smile, sitting down on the porch steps.
He clears his throat.
"Well yes, ehm, I have to go. Send me a text when you have the portkey. Have a good day."
He ends the call, and I smile. Uncomfortable Severus is quite awkward and cuteānot that I would ever tell him that, but still. Cute.
I walk back inside and summon some parchment, ink, and quill, quickly writing a letter to Madam President. Sending it off with my patronus before I walk upstairs to unpack my stuff from my trunk.
I am so engrossed in my unpacking and unshrinking of my luggage that I do not notice the black wolf in the distance, standing in the tree line at the end of my property, staring at me through the window.
