The three women anxiously paced around the waiting room for any word on how Leon was doing in the state that he was in. Madison kept trying to tell herself that the longer it was, the better the likelihood that Leon would be all right because that meant that Carla and the other doctors were doing everything that they could. Hunnigan had finally shown up after she sent another search party out for Helena and Aliya.
"Any word on how he's doing?" Ingrid asks as she walked over to the other three women who were all huddled in the furthest corner of the waiting room. Claire and Sherry looked at Madison, who had since washed the blood off herself and gotten changed into clean clothes.
"We don't know. He's still in surgery." Madison says, all three of them turning to greet Hunnigan.
"What's the news on Helena and Aliya?"
"I sent a search party, but we won't know more until they return."
"Okay and if they don't find them?"
"We are going to keep looking until we find something that tells us where they are," Hunnigan reassures them, putting a hand on Sherry's shoulder."
"And there's no evidence that Aliya and Helena are dead?"
"Absolutely none."
Sherry and Claire nodded as Carla came out from the ICU. She would have come out to talk to everyone sooner, but she had to be certain that Leon was going to survive the night.
"Alright, do you want the good news or the bad news first?"
"Uh the good news?" Claire asks, looking at the other three women.
"He's going to be fine. It was very touch and go during the surgery and he isn't completely out of the woods yet, but I am confident that he will survive. The bad news however is that he has a concussion and he had severe swelling in the brain which also means brain damage. We're keeping him sedated for a few days for the swelling to come down more but this means we do not know the extent of the possible brain damage," Carla explains, looking at the four of them and watching their facial expressions go from being relieved that Leon would live to a deep frown at the thought of him having possible brain damage, "other than that, he has a ruptured spleen that had to be removed, a broken arm, and several broken ribs. He's going to be out of commission for a while."
"Can we see him?" Madison asked, walking up to Carla, and then passing her as she nodded and waved her on to the ICU and stepped aside for the others to follow.
Madison led them to the ICU and opened the sliding door to Leon's room where Leon was laid up in bed. He had various tubes and wires connected to him that were tracking his vitals and feeding him pain medication and antibiotics. His arm was in a sling and every visible part of his body was covered in cuts and bruises.
"Tell me, Hunnigan, what are the odds of finding them both alive?"
"I'm hopeful but as the hours and days go on without any evidence of their location, there is a possibility we could end up finding their bodies, if they did turn up. Right now, we just need to figure out how to break the news to Leon."
"Well, he'll take the news of her being taken a lot better than he will of her being taken and pregnant."
Hunnigan sighed, pinching the bridge of her nose, "One headache at a time, please."
"Well, he should be eased into it We can't tell him as soon as he wakes up about Helena," Madison says, sighing as she looked at Leon laying broken in the hospital bed.
"Here Maddie, come back to base with me and we can see how the search party is coming along." Hunnigan says, gesturing for the young medic to follow her, leaving Claire and Sherry in the room with Leon.
"So, you're going to be the one that tells him when he wakes up, right?" Claire asks, leaning against the light blue wall and raising an eyebrow at Sherry.
"Why do I have to be the one to tell him?"
"Because you could have physically stopped Helena from going so therefore you should tell him."
"Or how about we both tell him since we both knew that she was pregnant and didn't try and stop her?"
"Fine."
Aliya sat at one end of the room, watching as Helena threw up in one of the clay pots on the other end.
"Still not feeling great, huh?" Aliya asks, looking over at Helena, who sat back with her head against the wall. Helena closed her eyes, wishing the nausea to go away. She didn't notice Aliya looking at her in concern, noticing how pale the older woman looked. Helena's skin had a clammy and shiny look to it, and she noticed that Helena's eyes were blood shot when the woman looked at her.
"Are you going to be alright?" she asks, getting up and rushing over to Helena.
"I'll be fine, just_" Helena starts, cutting herself off when they heard people approach and the heavy steel door was pushed open to reveal an older man with graying black hair with a medium build and a pale complexion entered with two guards wearing tactical gear.
"Who the fuck are you and what the fuck do you want?" Aliya asks, standing up and stepping in front of Helena protectively. These men were far bigger than her and she knew she couldn't take them down in a fight, but Helena had protected her so many times over the years when she was too weak to defend herself that she was going to try and return the favor.
The man smiled as he approached, his footsteps heavy on the cement as he closed the distance and Aliya instinctively took a step back, her burgundy eyes meeting his green ones as he looked down at her before he finally spoke.
"Now is that anyway to talk to your uncle?"
